AntHill Society's Next Release
May 14, 2005: San Marcos, TX - San Antonio, Texas-based band, Jim Murray's AntHill Society, completed the instrumental and lead vocal tracks on their second album, Short of the Blues. The 11 song album is scheduled for a mid-August release. There had been some speculation that the album would hit the streets in July but Jim Murray put the rumors to rest during our chat on Saturday.
I was finally allowed inside the Fire Station Studio for a 4 on 1 interview with the band. Although they seemed tired, and aKerrville gig was ahead of them for that evening, the mood was upbeat if not a little jovial.
The common opinion was that the album was far better than they had hoped for and that Producer/Engineer, Gary Hickinbotham, was the lynchpin for the success of the session. Gary responded with a shrug: "You guys are a very good band and all the producing in the world can't replace that." Gary produced a Grammy award winning album for Tish Hinojosa. He has worked with The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakum and many more. According to Jim, Gary took a keen interest in the band and its music from the first day of recording, the previous Monday.
For those who don't know the band members: Jim Murray is Lead Singer, guitarist and primary song writer; Matt Gilmore (number 2) is Lead Guitarist and backing vocalist; Craig Rainey is Drummer and Backing Vocalist; and Jerry Winkler is the Bass man. Jim writes the songs and comes up with the melodies. The band members arrange their own parts and lend their unique style to each song.
Short of the Blues is their second album, following their debut album - Low Life, released in March of 2004. This second album will contain some of Jim Murray's latest creations as well as some tunes familiar to those who have seen them live. Although Jim has kept a tight lid on the surprise 11th cut, I was able to learn the title of the song - although I have not heard it yet. If you readers want to know the song I can be convinced by replies to this posting. (I have my ways of learning whether you guys read this dreck or not.)
By the way, it appears that the entire session was video taped and a DVD documentary will appear shortly after the CD hits the stands. Bobby Rutledge, Road Manager and maniacal fan, did the camera work throughout as well as ponying up a few dollars on meals and beverages for the band. Thanks to Bobby, a great guy and loyal fan.
I don't know about you, but I am about to pee my pants with anticipation of the final album. I am sure many of you feel the same way...don't you?...I mean...you do right? uh...just kidding...hahaha...ahem.
Ambulatorius
By the way, if you want to learn the title of the 11th cut, as mentioned in this article, you'll have to go join their Yahoo! Group, find this post and reply to it.

Review: Vallejo and Del Castillo at Sam's
Which leads me to my next point...we didn't actually get to see Vallejo. After discerning that there was no way we were going to find a table, we decided to try to get a spot at the bar so we could at least have a place to lean and set down our beers. So we spent most of the time Vallejo was playing defending our place at the bar from the crowd clamoring for beers and shots. They sounded great though. Very rockin'. Great guitar work. And they seem to have a loyal fan base. I talked to several people at the bar who said they always come out to see Vallejo, they love Vallejo, Vallejo rocks. And they did...rock, that is.
We did finally manage to weasel our way into a table right up front when Del Castillo came on. I'm glad we did. They were awesome! I have to admit I've never been much into Latin music, but I loved it! The back-and-forth guitar work between Rick and Mark Del Castillo is amazing. Their fingers just fly up and down those frets and they never miss a note. Beautiful melodies and harmonies. The singer, Alex "El Lobo" Ruiz, has a great voice and is full of energy. A girl sitting at our table told me he reminds her of a Hispanic Steven Tyler and I could see what she meant. I was also very impressed with their percussionist (the title "drummer" wouldn't do him justice and they have a drummer also), Rick "The Rev" Holeman (hope I'm getting all these names right). He has a percussion set up you would not believe...everything from bongos to chimes and he knows how to work 'em. At one point, he brought a small bongo over to Rick Del Castillo, and Rick was playing guitar and the drum at the same time.
Near the end of the concert, Rick and Mark stood up on their chairs and jammed and the crowd went wild! When they finished their last song, there were deafening shouts of "OTRA! OTRA!" The band came back out and played a couple more songs. When they were finished, I wanted to go say hi to Rick, whom, as I mentioned in a previous post, I knew many years ago. But it took quite a while for me to get to him. Fans just flocked the band members, wanting them to autograph their CD's or take pictures with them. I had no idea Del Castillo was so big, but I can see why. When I finally did catch Rick he asked me if I thought he'd gotten better. I said yes. I remember way back when, I had an Yngwie Malmsteen guitar pick I had caught at a concert. I play guitar and I never used that pick because I like mediums and it was a heavy. So I gave it to Rick and he couldn't believe I was giving it away because of the thickness. Last night, I watched him throw his guitar picks out to the audience and the people fighting to catch them, and I thought that was really cool. Yes, Rick, you were a great guitarist when I knew you and now you have people fighting over your guitar picks and standing in line for your autograph. I'd say you've gotten better!
So, I'm bummed that I didn't really get to watch Vallejo. I'll have to catch them again sometime. But I want to thank Del Castillo for broadening my musical horizons. I now have an appreciation for Latin music that I lacked before. Thanks, guys!

Band Profile: Iris
Iris is a rockin' San Antonio cover band. Iris was formed in 2001 by bassist Jim Kuvet, formerly of the band Livewire. Other members are drummer Jeff Sellers, lead vocalist Roy Lee, lead guitarist Kevin Koch, and old/new member Jim Freeman (left to " explore strange new worlds and seek out new life and new civilizations" and came back).Iris plays (in my opinion) an awesome collection of cover tunes, including Green Day, Jet, Ozzy, Metallica, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Bush, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots and much more. Here's their whole song list.
Iris will be playing this Saturday (May 14) at the Guadalupe River Pub in Kerrville and Friday May 20 at Just 1 More. New Iris t-shirts will be available this weekend, so make sure you get one!
