Fave "haunt" in SA

Well, I still catch s*** when I reminsce about Tacoland, but no matter.

Something about it's longevity, location, personalities (especially the dear door-man in the trenchcoat offering his gin with a smile off of his water bottle (bless ya!) and, totally harmless) I love the place...many reasons. That would include memories of David Hamm of Azrael hanging from the rafters in 1992, with a voice and vibrance that will never be replaced.

...and onto the defunk "Cafe Solei" which was located on Broadway in Alamo Heights.

At least half of the bands listed on Rowan's list played there...

I lived nearby, and the place had it all.

Comfy booths with free internet (with most of the pc's off-line, o well), free pool, awesome food on the 'other side'. Combine a beautiful fireplace/hearth placed directly in front of the stage, the decor...

Full Tilt, DragonFly, Beverly Houston, Desmondea (sp) aka Violet Trip, maybe some of you remember the place. Kinda (very) yuppie-ish, but nonetheless lovely.

Whether my friend and I sat on the fireplace hearth slamming...something, occasionally dancing (what a mess), Cafe Solei was a gorgeous place.

The outdoor gardens, the tiki posts...the fountains.

RIP for the late owner...anyone recall anything special about a place they performed?

Kelly

JCM from The Killing Floor here...
I played just about everywhere in SA and some happening places in Austin. I must say Tacoland does hold very special memories... The underground feel, smell, the people, and night life atmosphere - Very like a small version of the Titty Twister from that cool moive...lol (Do u know which movie??) !Long Live Ram and Nightrocker!!

I remember RockIsland, DMZ, Crazy Horse (mmmm I wonder why??), Diddle Sticks in Converse TX, Sneakers, Wackies, just reminiscing of a few...

Yup!! That's the movie... That's where I discovered Tito and Tarantula... The vampire band... Very inspiring and refreshing music... Punk rock with a Texas blues flavor... Immagine that...

Sneakers... Oh yeah.. Mr Big, TNT, T-Ride, Extreme, Lymch Mob, Dave Chastaine, Accept, Steve Vai, Ian Moore, and Jeff Healey... Those were the days... JCM

Speaking of From Dusk til Dawn, I don't know if anyone paid attention, but the Del Castillo gig that I mentioned last week sometime...I believe it's at Antone's in Austin in mid-July...Robert Rodriguez is going to be there. The infamous Staci and I are thinking about driving up to Austin just for that!

Rodriguez is fanastic!

Another place I miss is Papa Woody's that used to be at the corner of Nacogdoches and Thousand Oaks. We had a lot of fun there and a band that we really liked, XES, played there a lot. They broke up...don't know what happened to them.

I also hear Iguana Bay is shutting down.

I'm not sure about Iguana Bay, and I'm still not sure about what's going on at The Sunken Gardens, but will try to find out.

I think I miss the Hemisfair Arena the most :/

I realize it was old, etc etc, but now all of the smaller tours have seem to gone onto Sunset Station or, occasionally, The Freeman Coliseum.

I probably haven't given Sunset Station a fair-shake, but something about the bar hopping (especially in winter)...

...I dunno. My brother was visiting from Chicago (land of Billy Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins) & there were loads of tickets available at the Coliseum. He was like, " Are you CRAZY? We have to go!". And so we went. I also didn't like the nasally-hits I'd heard on the radio, but hey...

Excellent seats, 3-hour set, beautiful stage design and they really did rock it hard. I changed my mind about that band after seeing them live.

Sigh, oh RIP Hemisfair Arena.

There are still two arrangements of flowers of some sort on Taco Land's patio, butthe front walls have been painted clean :(

Still, people are remembering. I sure as f*** am.

RIP Taco Land. We miss you.

Does anyone know what the fate is of those two motherfuckers who took the lives of Ram and Doug Morgan @ Taco Land?...just curious.
