Some Notes on July Stats, Ads etc.

First, I would like to remind everyone about the Free Ads. They are now getting traffic from Google and Yahoo from people searching for "musicians ads san antonio", "musicians classifieds san antonio" and similar phrases. Right now there are ads for artwork, distribution and promotion, and affordable web sites. There are also categories for musicians wanted, musicians available, band announcements, etc. They are completely free, no catch. Check 'em out. Tell your friends.

Second, in case anyone is interested, here are some tidbits about the stats for July.
- just hit the 12,000 hits mark on the counter (since I started this blog in April)
- over 2,000 people have visited this site in July
- according to Google, who keeps track of every time their ads are displayed on here, the ads have been displayed over 5,500 times in July, with an average of 200 times a day
- the most listened to song on the mp3 "jukebox" in July was The Groove Movement's "Sparrow's Song"
- most of the traffic this month has come from people searching for specific bands and clubs in San Antonio; a lot also comes from bookmarks and links from band pages (thanks guys!)
- many people stick around and read the reviews and interviews

All in all, not a bad month! San Antonio ROCKS!!

Interview with Mr. Mark Carrillo

After taking in some down-home tunes with The Psychedelic Jukebox at Panchito's last weekend, somewhere inbetween all of the fans and friends, I had a chance to sit with Mark and talk to him not only about SA music, but about his long-standing career as a media icon in San Antonio!

(I should mention that The Psychedelic Jukebox consists of: Mark Carrillo, JCM, Kevin Baxter, Tim Mckee and Rory Charitan)...

Mark has been in the radio and t.v. business for 28 years, and is a ball of energy in person, just as you've probably heard him on the air, and always on stage.

This man can sing, play tamborines, congas, and totally BUST A MOVE! His dance moves really added additional spice to the songs, and it was so obvious he loves what he's doing. (Lots of people bopping around, including me!)

Mark's resume is extensive, with his first big time radio gig as a newscaster on KTSA, and KTFM.

Mark is probably best known for his gigs on Y100, KITY, KLLS, and KKYX.

He also did the SAC show on KTSA while in college, and is currently an account executive at KBEJ UPN2, and MySA.COM. He continues his work as an account executive and as a voice-over artist, actor and lead. (GREAT radio voice)

One of the highlights of his career was a part in the 1996 movie, "Selena".

We talked quite a bit about the radio and music biz, starting with the late Joe Anthony, to whom Mark contributes so many band's successful careers including REO Speedwagon, AC/DC, Rush, The Scorpions...that list is long as most know.

I asked him if the radio station market had changed drastically, and why.

Quite on the record, Mark explained that ownership rules changing caused more 'cookie cutter' radio stations, with tighter playlists, and less personality.

In between his hectic schedule, Mark thoroughly digs what he's doing, and is hoping to soon have more time to perform live.

We look forward to it!

...gotta say my fave was, "Brandy"!

Skunkweed at The Cross-Eyed Seagull

Saturday, July 30th @ 9:30 PM

Skunkweed invites you to come out this Saturday night for a Mid-Summer bash At The Cross-Eyed Seagull. It is located north of 1604 on Stoneoak and Huebner. This is the first time the Weed has ever played this venue. So come out and help us show them what it's all about! The theme will be funny party hats. Wear your wackiest party hat and you might win a prize.

Taco Land aid effort continues

from the San Antonio Express-News, by Jim Beal Jr.:

In the aftermath of the June 24 shootings at Taco Land, there were hopes and prayers that bartender Denise "Sunshine" Koger and doorman "Gypsy" Doug Morgan would survive the attack that claimed the life of Ram Ayala, the storied owner of the storied place.

Musicians and fans sprang into action to put together benefits to pay tribute to Ram while raising money for Koger and Morgan. Sam's Burger Joint, up the street from Taco Land, had an opening July 30 and immediately that date was pegged for a Taco Land fundraiser.

Morgan died July 13; Koger is recovering. But the mourning continues and it's likely there'll be more good stories and more good will Saturday at Sam's when a bunch of artists, including Bone Machine, Satantonio, Double Clutch, Prepare to Defend It, Racing for Last, Claude "Butch" Morgan & H!X and Eric Geyer team to remember Ram and Doug and continue to send get-well wishes and give a monetary assist to Sunshine.

Crazy Night at BoozeHounds

Well if you've never seen The Killing Floor it is something that can not be missed. Not only was the music awesome but JCM is a master of anything that can be done with a guitar. One person near me said that what he did to a guitar bordered on abuse, but the sounds created are something no one should miss. JCM threw the guitar down and played it like a piano and then beat it with his guitar strap. Jack back on the drums played with a fire that you could feel along with Larry on bongos to create the perfect backing. While Matt, the new bass player, fit into the groove of this band like a glove. It should mentioned that this was the first time Matt had ever played with the Killing Floor.

JCM channeling Jeff Healey
Next Velveteen Skeen, who also had a first time member playing with them, continued the evening. These guys could could only be desribed as WILD. It was the birthday of the bassist Cajun Craig so the shots of tequila flowed up to the stage from the crowd all throughout their performance. The singer known as Zippy was a head-banging ball of energy; he jumped all over the bar. Big Will the guitarist played with feeling (and girls this guy is hot if you get the chance to see this guy you will see what I mean). Mark the Spark - this was his first time playing with them but he fit right in. Craig, Will and Matt even broke into a jam right in the middle of their set and it was awesome. These guys played a great mix, and they describe themselves as the orginal rock band of San Antonio, need I say more.

Velveteen Skeen

If you got to stay a little longer you got a unique indescribable threat. Mark and Jack had a drum war jam that was fantastic! Both Mark and Jack jumped on top their sets and played each other's drums and also had a female jump into the action. The action and the sound was remarkable what more could I say but WOW.

Drum Wars

Review: The Psychedelic Jukebox

Review from Darren on The Psychedelic Jukebox:

At the Panchitos on West Avenue the musical time machine that is the Psychedelic Jukebox took its willing riders on a journey back in time on the easy, breezy evening of Saturday, July 23 . By way of yesteryear hits such as "Hang On Sloopy," "Magic Carpet Ride," "Proud Mary," "All Right Now," "Reeling In The Years" and others the audience was magically transported to the days of the Ford Mustang's debut, The British Invasion, "Laugh-In," cat-eye glasses, 25-cent soda machines, tie-dyed shirts, paisley shirts, flower power and afros. This ensemble delivered the old hits with tremendous skill and definitely took me back.

As I dined on beef empanadas I revisited my years as an Air Force child in a Billy Mitchell Village apartment (3013D General McMullen) with each room a different color. (I still have the social security card with that address.) I recalled the early years following my family's moving from base housing to a house in the Westwood Village subdivision, which neighbors the Southwest Research Biological Foundation. We could often hear the baboons' cries in the night. Along the subdivision's entrance was a farm and ranch. Much of the area was farm land then. This was long before Westlakes Mall, Highway 151 and Ingram Mall were built.

The Psychedelic Jukebox made me reminisce about years long past, about simpler and less expensive times. They got me recalling scenes and images from my childhood. They did what a nostalgia act should do--with remarkable skill. It was a memorable performance.

Interview: The Groove Movement

Groove Movement/51 Acres in "Full Weave"

Last night I caught the Groove Movement and 51 Acres at Sam's Burger Joint in what they call a "full weave". I won't do a full review of the show because I've already done a review of The Groove Movement and a review of 51 Acres. So I'll just say if you get a chance to catch these guys jamming together, grab it.

Also this week I was lucky enough to get the guys from the Groove Movement to agree to do an e-mail interview with me! And here it is:

Interview with the Groove Movement:

Rowan:
As I understand from talking to Matt, The Groove Movement is unusual in that you don’t always practice or play in full formation. Also, some members switch instruments depending on the configuration (Matt plays bass or keyboards, Aaron plays percussion or bass). So, when you take the stage, you basically are doing an improvisational jam.

Describe more fully for the readers the makeup of The Groove Movement and how this works.

Groove Movement:
Frank Pena, Danny Gallegos, Aaron Elias, and Matt Wolff are the Groove Movement. Frank, Danny and Matt write the songs the band plays, however, when we are not on our respective instruments, IE. Frank - guitar, Danny - drum set, Aaron - percussion, and Matt - bass, we are for the most part improvising. The majority of the songs we write are written in such a way that it leaves plenty of room to improv. Ex. verse - chorus, verse - chorus, bridge - improv, outro.

When someone else is performing with the Groove Movement, they are performing as a guest. It is kind of like we are trying out different musicians to see if anyone of them will stick. Most of the time the player only sticks around for a short while, or for only one gig. Someday we will jam with someone that the glove will just fit right, whether it be a sax, violin, clarinet, or piano/bass player. It could be any instrument, what really matters is whether or not they mesh with the band musically and personally.

Rowan:
I’m interested in your songwriting process. Do you actually sit down and write songs or do you just get together and jam until something you like comes out of it?

Groove Movement:
We do both. Sometimes Frank will have an idea for a song, play it for us (Danny and Matt) and we will work it into a song. Other times we will jam and someone will remember a phrase from the jam and says, "hey, let's turn this into a song." We sit in a small room real close with our instruments and talk things out, try different changes both rhythmic and melodic, and iron out beginnings and endings.

Rowan:
Improvisation seems to me to require quite a bit of knowledge and skill. What kind of musical education and background do you guys have?

Groove Movement:
We have all been playing our respective instrument for several years. Danny got his first drum set when he was six years old. Frank and Matt both started taking piano lessons when they were ten years old. The three of us have all studied western music theory for many years as well. Frank has been teaching himself at home for many years, mainly jazz theory. Danny studied the drum set all through out high school and on into the Marines. Matt studied for two years at SACC and then went on to UTSA to study for another year.

Rowan:
This coming weekend (Friday July 22), I am going to Sam’s to catch The Groove Movement in what I’ve heard referred to as a "Full Weave" with 51 Acres. How does that work? Do you work on songs together with 51 Acres or is it all improvising?

Groove Movement:
A Full Weave happens when most of the members of 51 Acres are playing on-stage with most of the members from Groove Movement. The music that is created when this happens is 90% improvised and is always amazing, full of energy. Our bands have become good friends over the last several months. We are both considered jam bands, so it just made sense to see what would happen if we mixed members. Sure enough, the first time we did led to an incredible jam.

Rowan:
The Groove Movement has a unique sound. Who are your musical influences?

Groove Movement:
Frank - Frank Zappa, Herbie Hancock, Bill Frizzle.
Danny - Papa Joe Jones, Frank Zappa, Tower of Power.
Matt - Marcus Miller, Phish, Medeski, Martin and Wood.

Rowan:
What do you listen to that might surprise people who have heard your music?

Groove Movement:
Frank - Aaron Copeland.
Danny - Yanni.
Matt - Simon and Garfunkel.

Rowan:
Individually, what inspired you to pick up your chosen instrument?

Groove Movement:
Frank - The sound of the instrument.
Danny - High School Marching Band.
Matt - The feeling of intense improv.

Rowan:
Do you remember the first song you learned to play?
Groove Movement:
Frank - Color of the World (original).
Danny - No.
Matt - Heart and Soul.

Rowan:
What would you like to see more of in music today?

Groove Movement:
More local support of original music.

Rowan:
What do you want people who see your show to walk away with?

Groove Movement:
We want them to walk away with a better understanding of what it means to improvise a song or a set. It's not easy to make an improvised jam sound good all of the time. Sometimes a member will fumble and we will have a train wreck, that's when the audience is like, "What just happened? Did they end the song, or is that part of it???" It's a good thing we have gotten good enough to where that doesn't happen that much anymore. We also want them to have a feeling of wanting more. We want them to enjoy it so much that they tell all their Friends to come to our next show. But most of all, we want them to say, damn, that was sooo original.

Rowan:
How would like to hear them describe The Groove Movement?

Groove Movement:
Jazz with a Groove, a lot of Movement through out their songs. Funky! Kick ass and sexy. Original all the way....

Sounds like a great description to me! Thanks guys!

You can check out The Groove Movement August 20th at Crabby Jack's.

El principio del flava en el SA

originally posted on the Texheads Yahoo Group:

That is right! The Flava is making its debut in SA. We are playing at Wise Guys on Saturday night 07.23. There will be no openers just four hours of raging rock n roll. We will likely start just before or after 10PM. Please visit the Wise Guy's website below for driving directions.

Our longtime friends (George Kountoupis and Tony Kountoupis) will be joining us on stage this weekend. Also, the very funky Dustin Bozarth aka Keymeyster will be on keyboards this weekend.

We will be celebrating Byron Mezzetti's graduation from college. Congrats. We are extremely proud that he graduated in record time!! We will also be celebrating Jack Davis' birthday Saturday night. Time to grow up Jack!! He works for Ilios lighting who will be adding a
psychedelic flava to the San Antonio scene on Saturday night. Bryan Azar, proprietor of Ilios lighting, will also be assisting with the light show back in his home town of SA.

We are excited to bring the flava to SA where our good friend Jason Ellis and his entourage resides. It is time to party! Are you ready? Can you hear it? Get ready? Its the flava?

Luna Fine Music Club

from an e-mail from Luna Fine Music Club:

I think sometimes the word gets out that we are a "Jazz Club". It's all in how people interpret this that can effect their perception of the club. On the one hand, we are a club that books Jazz. On the other hand, Jazz is not, by any means, the only genre of music we book. The reason I bring this up is because sometimes it seems that people only think the music can be enjoyable if its Jazz. They make up their mind on what they want to hear even before they enter our doors. That is why it is so important to go to our website and check out the types of music we book. Many of the bands also have websites with sound clips and other information. We want to make sure everyone has a great time at LUNA and enjoys the show.

A quick personal note: We are a Small Business trying to make it in an even smaller market. We do everything we can to make our business run right and we try and put the best product out there. LUNA is not the type of club that will survive no matter what. Our doors are kept open by supporters of live music like you guys. As always we deeply appreciate your patronage and your continued support of our cause.

Wed 7/20 - Open Stage Sessions (always very spontaneous with both the music and the fact that you never know who will show up)
Thu 7/21 - Austin based trio, Hurts To Purr (Singer-Songwriter with Soulful Pop melodies)
Fri 7/22 - Wendy White & The Jet Propelled Papas (1950's style Jump Blues and Swing)
Sat 7/23 - Denia Ridley & The Marc Devine Trio (Here's some Jazz for ya!)

Rock City Bar

A North Central night club is in need of a new roof. The club in question is Rock City Bar at 115 General Krueger. The Killing Floor, formerly The JCM Band, and Double Clutch rocked its roof off on Saturday, July 16.

Taking the stage at approximately 9:30, TKF played two sets that included the Hendrix classics "Voodoo Child" and "Earth Blues," the Deep Purple classics "Highway Star" and "Smoke On The Water," Kenny Wayne Sheppard's "Slow Ride," Ian Moore's "Train Track," "Barline 99" and "Today" and their own "Mary Jane," "Miss You," and "Not Me."

Highlights included the leader Juan Carlos Martinez's hot, blues-drenched guitar leads and a Smirnoff-drenched guitar, David Garza's Les Claypool-ish and Billy Sheehan-ish bass solos and a furious rhythmic workout by drummer Jack Trevino and percussionist Larry Rimes that I'm sure would have thrilled Jose Chepito, Mike Carabello, Thomas "Coke" Escovedo and Neil Peart.

In the interim, Double Clutch took the stage with Carlos on bass.

Double Clutch's tattooed leader and guitarist Spider Mike declared before the set that they are the loudest Southern rock band. They backed up that claim with crunchy Motorhead-like Southern metal that must have left at least a few ears ringing. Spider Mike's colorful Southern-fried between-song banter was entertaining as was his raunchy, rhythmic guitar playing, Carlos' heavy, propulsive bass playing and the pummeling, machine-gun drumming.

Thanks to Darren for the review from last night!

A Few Notes...

The Free Classifieds
People are starting to use the free ads, so go over and check them out. Post some stuff while you're there :)

Linking to SA Rocks
A few people have asked me if I have a banner for them to put on their site. So here are some banners and the html code to use them. Also an explanation of how to link to a particular post like a review or interview, etc. (This link is now over on the sidebar if you need it later.)

The Survey
OK, I left the "Does the music coming on automatically annoy you?" survey up for over a week. 56% said "No - Rock On!" and 9% didn't care. So that's basically 65% against the 35% who said "Yes, I'll hit play if I want to hear it." So...the auto music stays up. Those who can't handle the rock can hit STOP or go here!

Contest
Kel & I want to do something fun and have a contest. A photo/art contest: people send in original art or photography that shows that SAN ANTONIO ROCKS! But we need prizes! So, if any bands would like to donate CD's, t-shirts, etc., or if any clubs would like to donate gift certificates, merchandise, etc. please e-mail me. KISS has promised some stuff for it...thanks, Laura! and Double Clutch has donated some stuff too...thanks, guys! But we need some more! Anyone who helps sponsor the contest will of course get a link as a sponsor.

Last but not least
Last night SA Rocks made it to the 10,000 hits mark! Thanks to everybody for helping to make this a cool place. And thanks to everyone who has given me a link on their site!!

Bunkerfest - Music for DVD's

My name is Kim with Nytro Produktionz and we just finished shooting footage for Bunkerfest 3 (biggest paintball tournament in texas) july 4th weekend. We are looking for music for our dvd's
since Bunkerfest is held in San Antonio, we were hoping to find some great musicians that would let us use their material for some great exposure for them. We need rock and reggae. We will need a release to have permission to put them on the dvd's, and this will also be a huge exposure for them, considering teams came from everywhere in texas and all over. We have my husbands team who plays NPPL (http://www.nppl.tv/) all over the nation. We are featuring a two disc dvd for Bunkerfest this year! We are very excited about this. Bands who want some exposure please email me or contact me 936.890.5952. Thank you for your time.

Ram T-Shirts

Someone told me to warn people about this. I don't know one way or the other and no offense to Hogwild, but this is what I was told:

The shirts being sold at Hogwild with Ram on them are kind of a scam... the guy who made them tried to sell them at The Sanctuary Tacoland benefit and he was donating ZERO of the proceeds to anyone, he was just pocketing all the cash, he had to be kicked out TWICE that day!

So, I guess, before you buy any Tacoland memorabilia, make sure the profits are going to good use and not to line some loser's pocket who's trying to make money off a tragedy.

Gig Map

This is a map that's supposed to show graphically where all the gigs are going on in SA. So far I only see one on there - Patsy's Ice House (click on the little pointer thing). But hopefully they'll keep this thing up. It's got pretty cool potential.

Apology to Ruben V

A friend of mine was looking at SA Rocks the other day and said, "Why don't you have Ruben V listed on there? Don't you know him? You were talking to him at the bar that one time when we were up at Wizards." (a long time ago obviously)

And I said, "Well, he plays blues. This is for rock music."

She rolled her eyes at me. "He doesn't just play blues. Haven't you ever gone to see him?"

To which I had to admit (here's the guilt trip part and thus the apology) that no, I have never gone to see Ruben V.

I should. I know he's really good. I have always meant to go catch him playing, and just haven't. I will, though. Soon. She has me on a guilt trip now.

Especially because yes, I do know Ruben. I've known Ruben for a long time, but not very well. Or maybe I should say I used to know Ruben a long time ago. One of those deals where you know all the same people so you know each other well enough to say "hi" in passing. His band did gigs with my ex-boyfriend's band when we both lived in Corpus, and I used to sometimes hang out with his brother. That's about it.

Anyway, now I feel guilty because I didn't have him listed on here (I do now) and because I've never gone and seen him. I also feel a little guilty because I know that Augie Meyers' son plays with Ruben. Augie used to come around all the time when I waitressed at Olly's Beef and Lobster. He's a real sweetheart and I should go check out his son playing, too. So I promise that one of the next shows I go to will be Ruben V.

ADDED NOTE: Someone asked me if I don't like the blues because of this post. No, I love the blues. One of the best concerts I've ever been to was B.B. King at The Majestic. B.B. and Lucille were amazing. The little old guy playing bass pushed Metallica with "Anesthesia" down my list of "Best Bass Solos Ever". The reason I haven't gone to see Ruben is because the place I knew he played was at Harmon's in Cibolo and I've just been too damn lazy to drive out to Cibolo!

NIN Tickets

I had someone search for "when do nine inch nails tickets for the san antonio concert go on sale", so to answer that question:

They go on sale Saturday, July 23rd at 10:00 AM at Ticketmaster. Ticket prices will range from $33.65-43.65.

This Weekend - Rockabilly and Chick Rockers

from the Express-News, by Jim Beal:

Bloodfeast 3

It's not a horror movie, though it'll likely sound like one now and then. It's not a human sacrifice fest, though there might be some blood, real and imagined. And it's not going to be quite as dangerous as it sounds.

Bloodfeast 3 is a gathering of the psychobilly tribe, the place where roots rock, punk, metal and all-out energy, not to mention upright basses galore, meet and mingle with horror themes. And Friday night it's set to invade Sam's Burger Joint before moving to Club Clearview in Dallas on Saturday.

Staged by the San Antonio-based Texas Psychobilly Company working with Hairball 8 Records and Psychobilly*US, Bloodfeast 3 will feature an array of area, national and international psychobilly purveyors.

The gathering kicks off at 6:30 with a screening of the film "The Psychobilly Sickness." Live music downbeat is set for 8:30 with, in order of appearance, Dead City Shakers (Dallas), Blood Moon Howlers (San Antonio), Zombilly (Houston), G-String (France), The Koffin Kats (Detroit) and, at 12:30 a.m., Concombre Zombi (Austin). Tickets cost $12 at the door; it's an all-ages show.

For the uninitiated, psychobilly has less in common with rockabilly than punk, but is nonetheless built on rockabilly's upright-bass/guitar/drums foundation. Some bands take the horror/psycho themes more seriously than others, but, for the most part, the slapping bass and driving sounds overcome everything else.

The French G-String, described as a "slap-punk" band just in case you thought you knew every music description, is likely to be the rudest and crudest band on the bill. Touring with a CD with a title that won't be printed in a family newspaper, the trio is designed to shock.

Detroit's Koffin Kats, working with the disc "Inhumane," are among the most musically accomplished bands on the psychobilly circuit. There are only three of them, but the KKs never let up. Songs such as "Chainsaw Massacre," "Demon Demon" and "She's Deadly" would sound just fine if they were called "Pillow Fight," "Bunny Bunny" and "She's Nice." But then that would require a whole new subgenre on the order of "smileybilly" or something that just doesn't sound cool.

Austin-based Concombre Zombi, a trio that has been around for a while, is celebrating the release of its "Daylight Comes" CD. Rest assured most of the Bloodfeast 3 participants don't relish seeing daylight at all.

...

Women will rule Casbeers all weekend. Friday night Sisters Morales move in with their eclectic repertoire that includes classic Mexican songs, honky-tonk, rock and combinations thereof.

Apparently it's official, or it's an egregious typo. Girls in a Coma, one of San Antonio's most popular alt-rock, etc. bands, tried to change its name a few months ago and the name change didn't take. Friday night at The Sanctuary it looks like the band will again attempt a name change, and make it official via a record, yes, record, release party.

And the new moniker? Girl in a Coma. The all-female trio of Jenn, Nina and Phanie is celebrating the release of an honest-to-goodness 7-inch vinyl single, "Both Before and Gone" b/w "Please, Please, Please." And not only is it a vinyl single, it's pressed on white vinyl. And the band name on the record is Girl in a Coma.

Girl in a Coma will get assists Friday night from Meek, Doom to Bloom, The Shim Shams, Thomas Cunningham & the Locofocos and D esdemona. It's an all-ages show.

Taco Land Shooting Claims Another Life

from the Express-News:

His mother had told him it was OK to let go. And Wednesday night, Doug "Gypsy" Morgan did just that.

After more than two weeks of trying to recover from a gunshot wound that pierced his intestines, Morgan, 53, became the second fatality of the June 25 shooting at Taco Land that also claimed the life of the iconic bar's owner, Ramiro "Ram" Ayala.

Police have said Ayala, Morgan and Denise "Sunshine" Koger were shot during a robbery at the Grayson Street bar. Ayala was shot first, then Morgan and finally Koger. Koger has told Morgan's family that he saved her life by shielding her from the gunfire.

An anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers led to the arrests of Joseph Gamboa, 22, and Jose Najera, 29. Each was charged with one count of capital murder and two counts of attempted capital murder and remained jailed.

It wasn't immediately known if Morgan's death would result in upgraded charges.

Morgan died at University Hospital at about 8:30 p.m. with his mother, stepfather, sister and a friend keeping him company.

Morgan had seemed to be recovering from his injuries after operations to repair his intestines, said his mother, Barbara Morgan Hecox. He sat up, talked a bit and even smiled. He asked about what had happened at the bar and when told his good friend Ayala had died, he cried.

But Morgan developed internal infections and his kidneys began to malfunction, and then so did his liver. And his intestines were leaking.

"He is considered septic right now," Hecox said minutes before Morgan died.

Doctors told his mother, who arrived here Saturday from Albuquerque, N.M., that any further treatment was futile, that Morgan likely wouldn't survive another surgery. She then made the difficult choice to have him removed from life support Monday morning, leaving his family with nothing to do but wait for him to die.

Hecox said that although her son was unconscious for the last few days of his life, she held his hand and talked to him, hoping that would provide him some comfort.

"It's OK to go anytime you're ready," Hecox told her son. "Everybody here loves you."

While waiting at University during what would be her son's last hours, Hecox talked proudly of him, about his vast book collection and his immense love of music. Morgan had more than 100 boxes filled with books. He had always loved to read, absorbed much of it and used it to debate with anyone who would take him on.

"Although he just went through high school, he was so well read," she said.

And the music was why he worked as a doorman at Taco Land — a place Hecox thought was a pizza place. He loved the bands and being around musicians.

Hecox said there was a blessing in having to come here — she found out how many friends her son had.

Because they lived so far away from each other, Hecox worried constantly about the son she adopted when he was 3 months old.

She worried that he didn't have a bed to lie on because he was sometimes homeless. She worried about his health because he battled cancer and had hepatitis C. She also wondered if he was alone.

During her stay here, she found out he wasn't. A steady stream of musicians, artists and "even normal people," she said laughing, went by the hospital to visit her son.

"It's just been a revelation," she said. "There's this wonderful guy that half of San Antonio loves and that makes us feel welcome and proud."

Morgan's friends told her stories of his generosity and kindness, about how he babysat for friends and made sure the bands that played at Taco Land were taken care of. "It's been good for us to hear about it," she said.

Hecox said her son would be cremated, and although she would like to have his remains closer to her, she's not taking him with her.

"He belongs in Texas," she said sobbing. "So we'll leave him here."

Henry Rollins at Sunset Station

Henry Rollins will bring his Spoken Word Tour to San Antonio October 6 at Sunset Station. Tickets are $20 at Ticketmaster.

I'm a little confused on this one. According to Pollstar and Ticketmaster, B.B. King is also scheduled to play Sunset Station on October 6. This would be an odd lineup, I think. Also tickets for Henry Rollins are already on sale, but according to Ticketmaster, tickets for B.B. King don't go on sale until July 23rd. And according to KISS, Henry Rollins is playing at Sunset Station on October 8th. And of course I can't find any listings for this on Henry Rollins' website or B.B. King's...

Anyone know anything about this?

Some Stats for the Bands

Thought you guys might be interested in some of these stats...see who's checking you out (I love this new stats thing I have!):

Sintense: someone in Canada searched for "sintense"

Rick Sanford: someone in Sweden searched for you

Dragonfly: someone in Corpus was searching for you guys

Grupo Metal: someone in Washington searched for "Madison Grupo Metal San Antonio TX"

Someone in Virginia searched for "San Antonio band nevermore"

People have also looked at Technorati (a blog site) tags for Sintense and for The Groove Movement, so I guess I'm not wasting my time putting those tags on here.

Just thought y'all might be interested :)

'Sup with Iguana Bay, Part II

OK, Iguana Bay shut down, Kel said their phone was cut off when she tried it, but I was just at N'Somnia's web site and found this:

Iguana Bay gig temporarily on hold.
Iguana Bay is making some major revonations to the club and N'Somnia has added it's expertise to help redesign the stage to help make Iguana even better than before.

So I'm guessing they're planning to reopen...

Skunkweed at Rebar

from Skunkweed:

Skunkweed will invade Alamo Heights to give the rich anglo-saxon crowd a dose of raunch rock. Be at Rebar this Saturday night (July 16th). Just take Broadway inside the loop and it'll be on the left. Show starts around 9:30PM, but make sure you get there early cause this place gets packed. Also, check out Cracka McSambo this Thursday at the Cross Eyed Seagull off Stone Oak. The acoustic show will astound and amaze.

A Look at The Lay-Moes

Over the past few months, I've seen The Lay-Moes describe themselves with a loudly self-proclaimed, "WE SUCK and are SO LAME!" (...is this possibly where the band's name comes from?)

I've seen it on some music group postings and on their website, and it never ceases to make me giggle :), and wonder...does thou "protest too much"?

The band doesn't really describe their music, if only hinting at a little bit of rock & punk, or, as they say on their webpage, "We decided to put some rock back into punk and make it dangerous and offensive again".

This made me so curious to see them Live last Saturday at the Bottom's Up Saloon.

They walked in, and I mentally rubbed my hands together, knowing that they probably rocked.

... and The Lay-Moes certainly do rock!

To me their sound is reminiscent of the early days of The Suicidal Tendencies and The Butthole Surfers, the early days of punk when it still packed a punch without any of the glorified 'Look at me, I'm a punker' undertones.

These four, Moe, Ben, Abe and Gabe, have got an original set-list that is totally complete with awesome riffs and solos. Abe's bass work and vocals were incredible, and they all have a tightly knit show to be seen.

"The worst music you'll ever hear in your lives". - quote

I'm sorry dudes, but quite the opposite - we loved it!

Completely Off-Topic: NIN 'Only' Remix Challenge

OK, this has absolutely nothing to do with San Antonio music, but I thought this was really cool and that some of you out there might be interested.

Nine Inch Nails is offering their song "Only" for people to download and "remix/reinterpret/ruin". Check it out.

I wish I had software to do that with, sounds like fun!

Del Castillo and Robert Rodriguez

Just want to mention this gig one more time, because it sounds like such a cool show. I know it's not in San Antonio and Del Castillo isn't a San Antonio band, but Robert Rodriguez is from San Antonio, so that counts :)

July 15th in Austin: Antone's 30th Anniversary Bash: Del Castillo with special guests Robert Rodriguez and Patricia Vonne

A couple people I mentioned this gig to asked me who Robert Rodriguez is. I'm amazed that anyone wouldn't know who he is, but in case you don't:

He's a movie director. His movies include:
Sin City
The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl
El Mariachi/Desperado/Once Upon a Time in Mexico
Spy Kids
From Dusk til Dawn

He also has a band called Chingon (which I understand is Spanish for badass) with some of the members of Del Castillo. Some of Chingon's music was featured on Kill Bill 1 & 2 and on Once Upon a Time in Mexico.

Patricia Vonne is an alternative country singer from Austin.

Anyway, I think it sounds like an interesting show and I might try to make it up there just to catch Robert Rodriguez.

The Killing Floor/Rick Sanford @ Bottom's Up

You have probably read Kelly's great interview with Rick Sanford, former frontman of Legs Diamond. I also went and saw The Killing Floor with special guest Rick Sanford last Monday, July 4th at Bottom's Up Saloon. I have been wanting to write a review all week, but I have been sick and my brain has been too fuzzy to write it! I'm still sick, but I'm feeling a little better, so better late than never, I at least want to say a little bit about that gig.

Oddly enough, I had never even heard of Bottom's Up Saloon, even though it's really close to my house. It's a nice little place, clean, with friendly service and a big backyard with large shade trees and picnic tables and a stage set up in the back corner. They had a barbecue going on, which unfortunately I didn't realize and ate 5 tacos (!) before I left the house, so I didn't get to try any, but it smelled great! It was really nice sitting outside with a light breeze blowing, hanging out with cool people, watching a good band and seeing the occasional fireworks going off in the sky (or under Kelly's feet! - I'm not even gonna explain that one!)

The Killing Floor put on a great show. All four members are excellent musicians. You've got David Garza on thumping bass, never missing a beat. Larry Rimes on percussion, with a great bongo and conga setup, also providing backing harmonies. Then the two showmen of the group, Jack Trevino on drums and JCM on guitar and lead vocals. Trevino really knows his way around a drum kit...and I mean AROUND. When he does a drum solo, he's not just back behind his drums pounding away, he's up and all around his set, using every bit of hardware on his drums to get different sounds and effects, even standing up on the front of the drums to play(see pic below).

And the centerpiece...JCM. Very good vocalist, exceptional guitarist. For someone like me, who misses the age of the guitar gods, watching him play was a real treat. The sound is blues-based rock, reminiscent of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, maybe a little more contemporary, a bit heavier. The technique is unique. What Trevino does on drums, JCM does on guitar, only more so. Not only are his fingers flying, so are his hands, as he quickly switches from underhand to overhand playing, back and forth, lightly whipping his hand down the neck of the guitar, using every bit of his guitar (and at one point the mic stand) to create unique sounds and effects. He uses a lot of pedals and is very fond of the whammy bar, but it's never overdone, never too much. And it may sound funny, but I have to say, he did the best tongue solo I've ever seen!

The other treat of the night was special guest Rick Sanford, former singer for Legs Diamond. He came out and performed most of a set with The Killing Floor, doing great Legs Diamond classics like "Out on Bail" and "Stage Fright" as well as Led Zeppelin's "The Immigrant Song" and Deep Purple's "Highway Star" and more. I saw Legs Diamond in concert in Corpus Christi when I was a teenager...for the life of me I can't recall who else they played with. Rick Sanford still has the same great voice and contagious energy he had back then. I really enjoyed the show and now I can say I've had my hand kissed by Rick Sanford!

And I got some pics! Click on a thumbnail to see the larger image below:

Thanks, guys! It was a great show and a pleasure to finally meet you all!

You can check out The Killing Floor tomorrow night (Sat. July 9) again at Bottom's Up Saloon with Velveteen Skeen and the Lay-moes. Bottom's Up is located at 10318 IH-35 North (at Starlight Terrace). The show starts at 8:00 Pm, so get moving early!
