Review: Jimmy Gibbs at VFW

from a good friend of mine, whom shall remain nameless cuz he didn't tell me if he wanted his name posted:

On a Saturday night a couple of weeks ago, (Aug 5th, I think) I went to join a couple of friends, one of whom was doing the sound for a band called Jimmy Gibbs. The "shoe" was at the VFW hall on Austin Highway. Now I would not necessarily have known where that was, save for the fact that I had been there for a garage sale a couple of weeks earlier. Anyhow, I went in and decided to use the bathroom before going into the stage area. Someone had put a sticker in the urinal, it said "Jane Fonda urinal target", with target rings around a likeness of her. I gave it my best shot, scored well, and went in to find my friends and got a chair. I was unfamiliar with Jimmy Gibbs, but over the course of the two hours I was there, I pretty much met all of them. They were pretty friendly, and did a really good version of Copperhead Road.

There were a few sour notes from time to time, but hey, it happens. They played Proud Mary, which was ok, but for me, if it isn't John Fogerty, what are ya gonna do? Speaking of that, the rest of CCR ought to be flogged for hitting the road as Credence Clearwater Revisited. What bullshit. But back to the show. All in all a pretty good evening. The female singer of the group (sorry, can't remember her name) had an original composition about Texas that was quite good. The band did two Dwight Yokum songs, and solicited a couple of requests. On a break, they sat with us, and two of the guys told some amusing road stories, mostly relating to what Guns n Roses called - in the liner notes to Appetite For Destruction - attempted financial sodomy. After the break, somene said it was "Ed's" birthday, his 80somethingth, I think. We all sang Happy Birthday to Ed, and he seemed to appreciate it.

I took off maybe an hour or so later. It was different, but riddle me this: where else in San Antonio can you get a Fosters on tap for $1.50? Not too shabby...
