Gabba Gabba Sabba, Hey!

Gabba Gabba Sabba - the guys from Pitbull Daycare playing Ramones and Sabbath tunes - intriguing. I’ve been wanting to get out and check this out. So when I found out they were playing at Club Kristal (always Sneakers to me), I had to go. So I headed up to Kristal last night to check ‘em out.

Just as with the Seether concert, the first person I ran into was the guy from Structure out in the parking lot passing out flyers. Those guys work so hard! So here it is:

Structure Album Flyer

Big surprise when I got in there - Brian Kendall back in his old Sneakers DJ booth spinning out the rock-n-roll just like old times (well, with a much diminished selection according to him, but still cool). Great to see him up there!

I caught the tail end of Pillcrusher, but it’s hard to judge a band from hearing 2 songs. So all I can really say is those 2 songs had kind of slow dark heavy melodies and the singer has one of those deep guttural death metal voices...oh, and he’s funny!

Then some Prong, Korn, Autograph, Metallica, Rob Zombie, The Cult, Static-X and Green Day from Brian.

Then Gabba Gabba Sabba! They kicked it off with Black Sabbath’s “Warpigs” and I was instantly impressed. They sounded awesome! I don’t know their names except the bass player’s name was Donnie cuz it was his birthday...he even got a cake up there (not to mention several shots)! Anyway, the singing was right on. The singer didn’t sound or try to sound like Ozzy or Joey Ramone, but did the songs with his own style, and it all sounded great! All of them sounded great, and I was especially impressed with the guitarist. Very clean! (I mean his playing, not his personal hygiene, although I’m sure that was fine, too!)

Anyhow, Blitzkrieg Bop, Rock ‘n Roll High School, Fairies Wear Boots, Havana Affair and more...where else are you likely to hear these songs played together?! Then, they seemed to be finishing up...with, oddly enough, “Snorting Whiskey and Drinking Cocaine” (isn’t that by Pat Travers?). But, I guess because the 3rd band that was supposed to play, Tension Speak, didn’t show up (evidently one of their members had a transportation problem), they extended their set...with some help.

Terry Anderson of Lokey got up there and sang “Symptom of the Universe” with them...great job! Then Mikey, previously with Uriel, came up and sang “N.I.B.” and “Sweet Leaf”. Then back to the Ramones and the GGS singer with “I Wanna Live.” Then Mikey again with “Children of the Grave.” It was really cool to see all the musicians working together to keep us entertained. Awesome job on all accounts.

I ran into my ex-cousin-in-law (or something like that), so I stayed around to see what he’d been up to, had one more beer, listened to Brian spinning some Alice in Chains, Pantera, Marilyn Manson and The Offspring, then headed home. Another great night at Sneakers...um, Kristal. You guys really should get up there when you get a chance. I hear they’re going to start having bands on Thursdays, also, so get out there and support this great new/old club!!

Oh and Happy Birthday, Donnie!
