Madex Thirteen, Echoset, Dieboy, & The Visitor

Last Friday night I made it out to Sam's Burger Joint for a night of live and local music. In all honesty, I wasn’t sure what to expect; this was the first time I had seen all four bands, two of which I had never heard of before. I took a chance. And as it turns out, it was a night of great bands (one from Austin) with a couple of extra surprises as well.

Madex Thirteen

Madex Thirteen were standing on the stage for a period of time before sound check, so I made my way over and briefly talked with singer/guitarist James. A real cool guy, he was obviously thrilled to be playing, but mentioned to me that it had been good while since the band last played a real gig. However, once they started their set, Madex Thirteen showed no signs of rust as they started the evening off to a propulsive start.

James & George of Madex Thirteen

What this three-piece plays is a very clean, very loud, and very energetic mix of rock and punk (or if you prefer, punk rock). Judging by their lyrics and the title of their latest CD, Weapons of Mass Deception, Madex Thirteen also seems to have a politically-conscious vibe as well. Of coarse, they weren’t so political that the show was, you know, serious. On the contrary, songs like "Alone" as well as an untitled new song kept the band and audience in serious motion. During closer "WMD," with its awesome Sepultura-stlyed breakdowns, Dieboy guitarist, Andy, could be seen at the front of the stage taking pictures with a disposable camera. He was spotted by bassist George and quickly invited to sing backup.

Beth, Rae, & Sarah of Echoset

Echoset was from Austin and was generally an all-female band (with the exception of a male drummer). Singer/rhythm guitarist, Beth, wearing a Rolling Stones shirt, was a natural bandleader and had personality for days. She talked, joked with the audience, and took all the (harmless) heckling in stride. She also managed to get the members of the audience to leave their seats and come to the front of the stage for the band’s set-closing jam out.

Beth & Rae of Echoset

Anyhow, if there’s one thing that I want you to know about Echoset, it’s that this band can play. Not in a Steve Vai virtuoso sense, mind you. Rather, they worked as a team to keep the music breathing and let the songs speak for themselves. It was a simple but effective formula: bass and drums find and keep a groove while both guitars, (mostly) non-distorted and crystalline, weave in and out of each other. Add Beth's soulful heartbreak vocals as well as Sarah's tasteful and seamless guitar leads, and you have a pretty good idea of how Echoset works. My favorite example of this formula had to have been "Patterson Avenue;" the setup and execution of the chorus left me with chills every time.

Image hosting by Photobucket
Andy & Robert of Dieboy

There’s a lot to like about Dieboy, the band. For starters, they seem to carry a genuine family vibe. As mentioned earlier, lead guitarist Andy was invited to sing backup during Maddox Thirteen’s set, and, later in the evening, James (Madex Thirteen) was invited to sing with Dieboy as well. In addition, during Dieboy’s set, singer/rhythm guitarist, Robert, was totally at ease with the audience; he talked in a laid-back, natural (almost patient) voice as he spoke between songs and joked about, among other things, being a hippy playing punk rock music. The band even led the audience through a makeshift primal scream therapy session where everyone was encouraged (including Robert’s mom) to basically scream out their week-long frustration using the F word.

Image hosting by Photobucket
Jorge of Dieboy

There’s a lot to like about Dieboy, the stage show as well. There was a lot of energy, especially from lead guitarist Andy, whose onstage maneuvers had him all over his part of the stage, reminding me of Angus Young. And although Robert did joke about it, the band did, in fact, play some punk songs. I missed the song titles, but one that I especially liked had a sing-a-long of "Radio" from the audience. But they were more than a punk band, as they ventured into alternative, pop, and rock music territory as well. My favorite song of their non-punk set had to have been "Chivalry." Although I can't be more specific with the song titles, I highly recommend that you check these guys out (at least look at their MySpace page and see what you think.)

The Visitor

Within the first ten seconds I was a fan. The Visitor started off with "C'mon Get On C'mon Get Off," a wholly infectious garage rock vamp that hit me from nowhere and took me several days to shake off. Rich’s vocals were also the perfect match of melody and reminded me a lot of Bono from U2 and sang of (my best guess) escape, or looking for freedom.

Image hosting by Photobucket
Stefan & Rich

The rest of the set was great as well. Again, I wasn’t so sure about song titles, but the band did play a great set of pop, garage, and no frills rock and roll; highly recommended. In addition, Rich (who apparently was a member of the Love Junkies at one time) was a great front man as well. Behind the string of blue lights that were hung from the mic stands, Rich shot several unintentionally hilarious one-liners through the entire set like most great front men do; he was a natural entertainer.

The Sanctuary Friday ???

I'm a little confused as to who is playing tomorrow night at The Sanctuary.

According to The Sanctuary's website and everything else I had previously heard, it was supposed to be The Hickoids, Sons of Hercules and The Carson Girls.

But then I got word that the FIN/Ledaswan/Beta Valentine show had been moved from Alternative Lounge to The Sanctuary.

So, I don't know what's going on with The Hickoids show...are ALL these bands playing there? It's been a while since I've been to The Sanctuary, but I only remember one stage...does anybody know?

Butch Morgan's Guitar Stolen

I received this in a roundabout fashion, but thought I'd pass it on, in case it helps. From Butch Morgan:

Hey, if you could help spread the word I would appreciate it. Here is all the info I have:

On February 13 at about 11 a.m. my guitar and my Folk Alliance back pack were stolen from in front of the house I was staying at in South Austin right off Banister St. My wallet was in the backpack along with my CD's and promotional material for the Folk Alliance Conference.

Unfortunately, I do not have a photo or serial number for the guitar but it was a distinct instrument, a 1987 Anniversary Commemorative model limited edition Alverez Yari. This was all written on a brass plate on the back of the head stock. It is a cutaway model. The top is spruce and it had a major repair job recently. The stain that was used on the repair was considerably lighter in shade than the original stain and is very noticeable from any distance. It has a tortoise shell pick guard with some pick scaring right behind the pick guard between the pick guard and bridge. The back is a dark brown and black KOA very beautiful.

There was a piece of Velcro on the bottom side in the cutaway that I used to my slide. If you happen to see this guitar please contact me at 210-884-1572. I doubt there will be another one in the local vicinity. Thank you for sending this on to anyone you know who frequents the local music scene and pawnshops. This is a players guitar and someone will end up showing it off somewhere.

Your pal,
Claude "Butch" Morgan.

From the Ashes of Wacky's Comes the Limelight

Funny, I was just reading this over at mysanantonio.com:

The Swindles, Rick Broussard and Two Hoots & A Holler
The Limelight —Snowbyrd's Chris Lutz wrote of the space on North St. Mary's Street, "limelight = tacoland meets casbeers." And it's looking as if the bookings at the Limelight are a mixture of Taco Land and Casbeers. Broussard and his Two Hoots will open with their roots rock/country and energy. The Swindles follow with San Antonio rock. Saturday, it's Snowbyrd, Fluffer's Union and the Farcrys for the Taco Land side of the weekend.

Then I got this e-mail from The Swindles:

The Swindles + Two Hoots And A Holler on Friday night!
It's true, the Strip is raising it's ugly head once more with a new music venue. It's called the Limelite and it is located at 2718 N. St. Marys St. right where Wacky's used to be. Last time I played in this location was over 15 years ago for the final Radsoles show! Weird, talk about going in circles! Anywhoooo.. We are gonna start as soon as Paul gets back from celebrating his birthday with Willie Nelson at the Rodeo, which should be around 11:30. Get there early anyway because the night starts off with a world class entertainer!

That guy below here is Rick Broussard, the star of Two Hoots And A Holler fame. Hailing from the humble town of Lake Mqueeney, Rick has traveled the world, made and lost fortunes and amassed a cache of friends and fans in the process. We are fortunate to announce that Rick and his crack team of musicians will start the evening this Friday around 9:45 and will proceed to give the Limelight it's first true rock-n- roll flight test.

Krybdus & King Furious Tonight

I didn't get this information in time to add to my listings, but I just heard that Krybdus and King Furious are playing at Atomix tonight (Thursday). So, go check 'em out!

Sons of Sintense Nightmares or Something to That Effect

So, I spent most of last weekend researching digital cameras, trying to find one that suited my purposes to replace my old one. After much digging through a bunch of camera crap that I didn’t understand, I decided to save my head from the serious aching coming on and ask advice at one of those photo-fiend forums. (If you ever need camera advice, MOST of the people on http://www.phototakers.com/ are very helpful. Some just tell you to read a bunch of articles.)

Anyhow, Monday I went out and bought myself a new Fujifilm FinePix S5200. Not a top-of-the-line camera by any means, but much better than the one I was using before. The old one was pretty much just auto-focus, point and click, no different settings for different light, no manual controls, etc. This new one has all that. It also takes video clips, although I am fairly disappointed in the quality of the sound on the clips.

The point of all this camera talk is that I found myself with a new toy and I had to go test it out. It being Monday and all, the perfect place was naturally Club Kristal. The Sons of Sancho, Sintense and Nightmare Sinema were playing up there, so I headed out to play!

I walked in during The Sons of Sancho (formerly El Sancho). This is the second time I’ve caught these guys and again I didn’t manage to catch a whole set. Also, I have to say that I was kind of intent on figuring out this new camera, so I wasn’t as focused on the music as I should have been. I read the manual before I left the house, but reading and doing are two different things.

Sons of Sancho

So I’ll just say this: I like these guys because they’re different. Their sound is sort of a heavy funk, with some punk and reggae elements mixed in. The singer, Matt, has a lot of energy and I almost messed up when getting a video clip, because when he started bouncing around on the stage, I found myself starting to bounce, too. You can’t really do that when you’re trying to make a video!

If you want to see the video clip it’s here: Sons of Sancho Video Clip
Keep in mind that the sound quality of the camera is not good. The band sounded great; the video clip has very jumpy sound. Also, I was standing too close to the speakers on this one. I’m learning. This clip is also fairly dark. There just wasn’t a lot of light being focused on the band from the front during this song.

(I’ll be getting these clips up on a page over at sarocks.com as soon as possible. I’ll probably have to take down clips that are on there and put up new ones as I go so I don’t use up all my web space and bandwidth. That sucks, but I think it’s going to be necessary. Or maybe, if I can afford it, I’ll upgrade. We’ll see.)

Next up was Sintense, who I’ve seen before, at Rock City Bar (with El Sancho) and enjoyed very much. They’re one of the reasons I decided to go up to Club Kristal Monday. I hadn’t seen them in a while. Once again, they sounded great. As I mentioned in my previous review, I think these guys have what it takes to make it. They have a sound that can appeal to a large audience...it’s fairly heavy but not too heavy to appeal to the mainstream alternative rock crowd, and yet they don’t sound like every other band. Their songs have catchy melodies and rhythms that stick in your head and make you want to hear them again. I also mentioned in the review that Dex needed a larger stage than the one at Rock City, and Kristal has that (although I wish they’d get rid of those damned rails around it!), so I got to see him with more free range. Very hyper, lots of fun to watch! How he spins around so much with a corded mike and never trips himself is beyond me!

Sintense

They played their fans’ favorites: Julias Tune, Define Happy, Friday Night, and more, then asked what we wanted to hear. Naturally I shouted out “Probandt,” which is my favorite, and even though the rest of the crowd wanted something else, they did oblige me with my fave (and then pacified the rest of the people. Thanks guys!) So I took a video of “Probandt.”

This one is a little better. I decided to move back from the stage and the speakers and use the zoom instead. Thus, the sound is little better, but still jumpy. Again, don’t blame the band; blame the camera! Sintense: Video Clip from “Probandt”

Last of all, Nightmare Sinema, whom I have not seen before. When I saw the drummer, Dino, with a green mask on, setting up his drums, I had no idea what to expect. Was this going to be a theatrical show, with scary masks and hellish harmonies? Which would be cool. It wasn’t like that, but it was a damned good show.

Nightmare Sinema Drummer

The other two members of the band dress fairly normal, no masks. The guitarist, AJ, and the bass player, Mark, share the job of lead vocals, and their voices flow together and compliment and counterpoint each other. Their tunes move from slow eerie wailing into heavy crunching rhythms into ripping solos and back again. Lots of variety, very good flow, lots of movement. I was very impressed by their drummer. I had to do a double-take at one point to make sure he was only using one bass drum, because it sounded like double-bass. He’s that quick.

Nightmare Sinema Guitarist

I took some pics of them and then a video, then ran out of space on my card. Turns out a 1 gig card doesn’t hold as much as I thought it would! Well, at least now I know the limitations I have to work under, right? But in a way, this was good, as I finally quit messing with the camera and just enjoyed the show. Their strong rhythms had me entranced and made me want to do some serious headbanging, or what we used to call hair-dancing, but I didn’t want to be the only one out there, so I refrained. Some of the old Sneakers gals need to come out to Kristal so I’m not alone! They could also have helped save me from the little loser who kept asking me who I was there with and did I want to give him a little kiss...is this a line guys think will work? Come on! “Do you want to give me a little kiss?” WTF is that?!

Nightmare Sinema Bassist

Anyway, check out the video clip of Nightmare Sinema. I forgot to zoom in before I started shooting it (you can’t zoom once you start), so it looks further away, but it’s kinda cool cuz you get more of the lighting effects.

Kristal Lineup for February

Kristal Lineup

Don't forget: tonight is the first Thursday with live music at Club Kristal, with Lions in Cages, Forever is Never and Cematary Hips. Now, I can't go, so you guys have to go for me and tell me all about it, OK? It's at 11431 Perrin Beitel, where Sneakers used to be.

Kid Rock: Review and Pics

Thanks to JJ for this review and pics of Kid Rock at the Rodeo the other night:

Well I arrived at the AT&T Center early, so I guess I watched the rodeo. It was ok but it's not my thing. The only thing that really stood out to me was the bull riding. Well anyway, after the rodeo was finished, the workers started getting ready for Kid Rock. First a tractor brought out a folded small circle stage with a turn table, drum set and keyboards. They managed to set it all up in about 30 minutes. That’s when the lights dimmed and the crowd went nuts and the band went on stage.

Kid Rock at the Rodeo

They were introducing each member of the band and when they were done they started playing "Bawitdaba" (instrumental) while Kid Rock came out with his posse. They started out with "American Bad Ass" and did a cover of "Sweet Home Alabama" and some other classic rock covers. He also he played every instrument on the stage from the keyboard to the turn tables to the banjo.

Kid Rock in Concert

It was an awesome concert. He played “Picture” with the drummer of his band who is a girl and she sounds great. I could have believed she was Sheryl Crow! And then he said that he was only supposed to play till 11:00, so he asked the crowd what they thought of that and everyone threw the finger and said fu** that. Well after that he did the last two songs "Cowboy" and "Bawitdaba" which were awesome.

Kid Rock Show

I didn’t expect this concert to be good but damn it rocked! Kid Rock was awesome and this would have to be one of the best indoor concerts I have ever seen.

Kid Rock in San Antonio

AntHill Society at The Shanty

from AntHill Society:

It is said that music is food for the soul. If this is the case then the Shanty at Canyon Lake is serving up Fillet Mignon on Saturday, February 11th at 9pm.

Jim Murray and his AntHill Society will bring their popular style of original music to a tourist favorite watering hole. The Shanty is on FM 306 a few miles outside of New Braunfels, Texas at the Sattler road cutoff. Seating is plentiful and the staff and audience are friendly.

The Shanty has been a staple in rock music since the early 80’s. No cover and $2 something beer! Once again: see AntHill Society for free and drink nearly free beer while you watch. This IS a no-brainer.

For directions click on www.anthillsociety.com and scroll down to “Next Society Event” and click on it for a map to the venue.

Awesome Fucking Videos

Someone was kind enough to share some videos with us and I have put them up at:

http://sarocks.com/video/video.html

There are videos of Shinedown and Seether at SnoCore, Disturbed with the Jagermeister Music Tour and Kid Rock at the Rodeo. I will keep them up until/if I receive word that I have to take them down, so check 'em out now!

Note: You pretty much want to have broadband to view these and still allow time for them to load. They are not MTV video quality, but damn, you'll feel like you were there if you weren't! Thank you SO MUCH to the contributor of these videos! Fucking awesome!

The Skinny on The Bay

Some people have been wondering about this new club, The Bay, that has sprung up in the ashes of Iguana Bay. I have been assured that:

The Bay, as you know, was originally Iguana Bay. For a long time, Iguana Bay was a great venue for live music. Over the years, due to mis-management, Iguana had taken an almost undesirable reputation as low class bar attracting a bad element status to the local community. This has changed.

The new management/owner (Gus Tucker and his staff) is desperately trying to make a positive change for the bar. With over $100,000 in improvements, repairs and remodeling they have indicated thru their actions they are serious about the changes.

Gus is a huge fan of live music and is making sure his patrons are having a good time. He is trying to move towards the younger, hipper crowd. Of course, this means the more in-crowd bands and music. Predominantly, Rock and Roll, the bar is after both classical and modern rock but I'm sure if other genres make themselves available, he'd be open to it.

I also know that Iguana Bay had a kind of bad rep with bands and have been told that the new management is aware of this and will ensure that the old problems will not arise. So, bands, check out The Bay, and fans, check it out as well. It was always a good setup for live music and it sounds much improved!

Meagan Tubb at Sam's

Meagan Tubb and her band will appear in concert at Sam’s Burger Joint located at 330 E. Grayson between Broadway and 281/37 HWY in San Antonio, TX 78215-1228 (http://samsburgerjoint.com/location.htm) on Saturday, Feb 11th at 9:30 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door. The concert is a production of “Dia De Las Valentinas”, an all female-fronted band night.

Meagan Tubb is joined by her guitar /slide guitar player Jason Nunnenkamp, former guitar player and front man of Red McFunk, Jack Michaels on bass, former front man of Jack Michael’s Band, and John Duran on drums, who recently relocated from L.A. where he was the drummer for Chris Opperman, The Heat Merchants, and toured with Global Funk Council.

Meagan Tubb independently released her first EP entitled “Color Outside the Lines” on August 20th 2005. The EP was recorded with producer Rick Perez for Ravenflight Music Productions during the spring of 2005 in San Diego, CA. Meagan then moved to Austin in May of 2005, where the EP was released. “Color Outside the Lines” was built on the foundations of Meagan’s compelling songwriting, vocal melodies, and impressive guitar work. At times sweet and sultry, other times unwaveringly powerful, Meagan has her own style of rock that takes the listener on a delightfully unexpected journey. From reggae, to rock, to blues, to jazz swing, “Color Outside the Lines” incorporates several genres into one “sound” that is all Meagan Tubb. The album is available for sale at www.cdfuse.com/meagantubb and MP3’s are available on Itunes.

Meagan is currently working on an upcoming full album release entitled “Beautiful Noise” which incorporates more southern rock influenced slide playing and guitar harmonies as well as more blues-based numbers. Look for its release on her website-
www.meagantubb.com in the Spring of 2006.
