Top Videos
Ever since I started putting videos up, I can't tell anymore which are the top songs on the jukebox. (My stats are unfortunately limited to the top 10 in kilobytes.) And I don't know how accurately I can tell which videos are the most popular overall, since I have to switch them out due to lack of space (I really need to upgrade soon!).
ANYWAY...here are the 5 most-watched videos on the May stats, if anyone is interested:
1) Iris "Black Magic Woman"
2) Texas Radio "Never Again" (part I)
3) N'Somnia "The Immigrant Song"
4) Johnny Drama "Creep"
5) Alter Ego "Sober"

Johnny Drama at Sherlock's and SOHO's Grand Opening
from Johnny Drama:
Is it Tuesday already? I hope that all of you enjoyed your Memorial Day Weekend. God knows I'm still tired...
This past weekend we had two great shows. First we were at THE PLACE on Friday night and then we were at WISE GUYS on Saturday. We had a great time both nights and it sure did seem as though everyone there was having a good 'ole time. We met some new people and there were some long time friends that came out for the first time to check us out. Thanks to Alice, Susan, Martha and Jayna for making it out to see Johnny Drama. Hope it won't be the last. In record time, the pictures are up from both shows. I guess when you delete half the pictures by accident, it doesn't take too long to put them up...does it JJ? We won't get into that though :-) Just log onto the website and check them out.

Now that Summer has officially begun, it's time to party with Johnny Drama. We have some big shows coming up this week. As a matter of fact, it starts off in two days. We are playing a rare weekday show this Thursday night. We will be out at Sherlock's Pub this Thursday. We need each and everyone of you out there on Thursday. It's our first night there and we need to make a great first impression with your help! So get all your friends together along with their friends. Tell their friends friends so that they can tell their friends...you get the idea! School's out so you know that all the party people will be out in force. Help us make the night a memorable one.
Speaking of memorable nights...Friday night we're playing the grand opening to San Antonio's newest bar, SOHO Lounge. This will definitely be a great place to be at. It's located at 12289 Nacogdoches @ Thousand Oaks, in the same shopping center as Gold's Gym. It's the same location that housed Lucky's Bar.

Deja Vu: Andrew Takes Over
from Brett with Deja Vu:

Well, the replacement of the replacement of the fill-in singer has been found (ow)! Come out to Main St. Bar on Wetmore this Saturday, June 3rd to see the debut of Deja Vu's new, permanent singer, Andrew! I've been filling in on vocals since April, but now Andrew is the new full-time frontman for Deja Vu! Andrew and I will be double-teaming vocals Saturday at Main St., and it's the Summer Kick-off Party, so come ready for a beachin' good time! Beachin? Did I say "beachin?" Damn...was that cheesey? That sounded cheesey. I don't care, I'm leaving anyway. I hate everybody.
Anyway, Andrew has a great, edgy sound, and he gets into the music, plus some chicks think he's cute, and that's what really matters, right? I seem to just scare 'em away! Seriously, you really need to hear this guy. He rocks! New songs from Audioslave, Seether, AC/DC, and Cake! It's always fun at Main St., so come on out!

Totally Off-Topic: Zombie's Real Name
I had somebody here searching for this, so while it does not at all pertain to San Antonio music, I will attempt to answer the question: As I understand it -
Rob Zombie's real name is Robert Cummings. He changed it to Zombie due to his love of horror flicks.
His brother, Mike Cummings, is known as Spider, from Powerman 5000.
Hope that helps.

Skunkweed At Irish Pub This Friday
Saturday: Yoshimoto and Plans Gone Awry
So where did I leave off...? Oh yeah, N’Somnia, Journey, dual flute jam...got the disc...headed to St. Mary’s.
This was one of those nights where absolutely nothing went as planned! Here’s what happened. My friend e-mailed me that she’d like to go see Devil Driver at The White Rabbit. Coincidentally I had also received an e-mail that day about the band Kill Hannah, who was also scheduled to play the Rabbit that night, offering review tickets and interviews. So I was like, sure...I can do that and we’ll see Devil Driver...sounds like a plan.
Ha ha ha. I should never use the word “plan.” That just guarantees that everything will get screwy.
I never received word on tickets for the show (which as it turned out had been moved to The Sanctuary), and couldn’t really afford the Rabbit’s $18 cover. So, I figured we weren’t going, thus made plans to meet my friend to pick up the aforementioned disc at Make My Day. But my Devil Driver friend still wanted to go and offered to pay my way in. But first I had to go by Make My Day, so we figured we’d grab the disc and haul ass down to St. Mary’s and catch Devil Driver. That was Plan B.
There’s that “P” word again.
Hit Make My Day at 9:00, but my disc friend didn’t get there till after 10:00, which didn’t give us much time. So we hurried to The White Rabbit, only to find that Devil Driver’s set was half over and they still wanted to charge us, not the $18 mentioned on the Rabbit’s web site, but $20 each. C’mon, $40 for half a set? There are very few bands I would pay that much to watch for half an hour and Devil Driver isn’t one of them. My friend agreed. So...
Plan C: Find a restroom. The couple o’ beers we had at Make My Day had hit me. Papa Ray’s was right across the street and I knew that Amplifyd was playing there. So ok, let’s go in, use the facilities, have a beer and say hi to the guys. Then we’ll go bar-hopping down St. Mary’s.
So far, so good. Bathroom. Beer. Shot (uh-oh, added element not in the plan). Saw Rick Sanford (former singer of Legs Diamond)...chit chat. Guys came over from the Rabbit and the Devil Driver show...chit chat. Amplifyd’s set ended...chit chat. My friend is like, ok Rowan, chug-a-lug, I need some heavy stuff and I need it now!
Wait, short interlude...I should mention something about Amplifyd’s show, even though I’ve caught and reviewed them a few times. They have a new guitarist, John Bracy, and this guy kicks ass! Very energetic, shredding leads...I was very impressed! Awesome guitarist and showmanship is always a bonus.
Ok, so now it’s getting pretty late and plans are falling apart all over the place. The bar-hopping thing is pretty much out of the question. So, let’s just pick one bar and go there. The guys from the Devil Driver show wanted to go, too. So we reached a general consensus...
Plan D: The Mix.
Good choice. I don’t think any of us had been there before, but it’s a cool place. And man, it was packed! Yoshimoto was playing, and we came in during the middle of their set. Good straight-forward heavy rockin’! Most impressive to me was singer/guitarist Tiffany. She’s this little tiny sweet-looking girl, dealing out heavy hyper guitar and vocals. Jumping up on chairs, playing guitar with one hand and holding the mic with the other while she belted out the vocals. We were very impressed with the whole band and very into the music, but she was definitely the thing to watch!

They finished, we hung for a little while, talking to Toni of The Edge and Erica of Desdemona (who I was surprised by on two accounts - 1. she’s a little tiny thing too, with that big ol’ voice; and 2. I had Desdemona down as playing at The Sanctuary that night...whoops!). Both lots of fun to talk to. Then we split while I was still capable of driving!
So it was a fun night, and I guess sometimes Plan D is the best? Or maybe just skip to Plan Z - ignore all other plans and just fly by the seat of your pants!

N'Somnia at Snoop's
I decided to stay close to home Friday night and check out N’Somnia over at Snoop’s on Perrin-Beitel. Very glad I did! Not only were they and their friends very nice and fun to hang out with, but the band was phenomenal! Not just due to their musical ability but also their choice of songs. Sure, they played a few cover band staples, which sounded good and all that. But they played some of my favorite classic rock tunes that I never hear bands play and did such a kickass job with all of them. A great trip back in time.
We’re talking Rush “Red Barchetta” (on request), Jethro Tull “Aqualung,” Deep Purple “Perfect Strangers” (love that song), Yes “Roundabout,” and several Led Zeppelin songs, including “The Ocean” and “The Immigrant Song.” They also did Sponge “Plowed” and Dishwalla “Counting Blue Cars”...all these great songs that not everybody does. It was great to hear something different and the audience was loving it all.
Every member of the band sings, but Val Mora performs the majority of the songs, as well as playing bass guitar. Awesome voice! The vocals of Robert Plant is his prime, especially on songs like “The Immigrant Song” with those gritty highs, can’t be easy to duplicate, but he was right on. Plus, he is so hyper and seems to be having such a great time that you can’t help having a good time, too.
While perhaps not quite as energetic as Val, the rest of the band seems to have a great time, too. Lots of joking around, lots of laughs. I was very impressed with the musicianship of the whole group. Twins Jeff and Jerry Doyle (also of The Bad Boys) on guitar and drums, respectively. One of the highlights of the night was their rendition of Ted Nugent’s great song “Stranglehold.” Jeff nailed that awesome guitar solo! There are video clips of “Stranglehold” as well as Led Zeppelin’s “The Immigrant Song” over on the Video Page...check ‘em out.
But wait, there’s more. The other really cool thing about N’Somnia is their keyboard player, Rick. Wearing what one of the band’s friends called his “organ grinder cap,” with a cool calm, this guy does some great keyboard work. But even better, he also shreds on the flute! Definitely the highlight of the first set!
Great music, fun time. Definitely I’ll go see these guys again.
Oh wait, I already did. Saturday night I stopped in at Make My Day, where N’Somnia was playing. Actually I was there to meet a friend to get a disc from him, but as a bonus I got to watch another set from N’Somnia. First thing I noticed was that I recognized quite a few people in the bar from the night before at Snoop’s. The second thing I noticed is that Make My Day has the smallest stage I’ve ever seen. The whole band wouldn’t even fit on it! The third thing I noticed was an extra band member, playing one of those freaky little guitars that have no headstock. Those things always trip me out. They look more like a keyboard than a guitar. He also sang Journey’s “Send Her My Love,” which bummed me out a little as it reminds me of something sad, but he did a good job of it. The coolest thing was that he played flute also, so he joined Rick and we had a dual flute jam.
I later learned that this extra person (whose name has escaped me) used to play with Val in the band Heyoka and was sitting in with them that night.
We only stayed at Make My Day about an hour and then we moved on to go hopping down St. Mary’s. But that’s another story...for tomorrow.
You can catch N’Somnia back at Snoop’s this Friday May 26th and at Tiffany Billiards (or whatever that place is called nowdays) on Saturday June 3rd.

How the Hell Did I Miss This?!
Did everybody but me know that Yngwie Malmsteen is playing at The White Rabbit tomorrow night? Why didn't someone tell me?! I would have made plans to go. Maybe I can scrounge up 25 bucks somewhere...

Wednesday May, 24 2006 I’m going to go and sit in with my friends Elle at the Candlelight Coffeehouse on St. Mary's
3011 N St Marys St, San Antonio, TX 78212
Cost: FREE
Time 8-10
Alright, this Thursday we are going to be out at the Blue Cactus Café, my neighbor’s house caught on fire and they have been great friends to me and my family and I’m hoping that we could help some very good people out. Although, I’m not Ty Pennington with famous friends nor do I have Sears helping me out but I do have a whole bunch of great people that have supported me for many years and good people helping good people is what San Antonio has always been to me. So I’m asking from the bottom of my heart to come on out and help a family in need as I know they would do the same for you. Blue Cactus Café have offered to help out here is part of their flyer.
Friday night we are back in Corpus Christi TX. at Doctor Rockit’s Blues Bar for a 9:30 start time.
Saturday night it will be something a little different, my good friend David Holt comes back to town for another acoustic show with me. We’ve done this before and it was a blast playing some of his stuff and some of mine along with some old crazy stuff. Get there early get a great seat and enjoy some good music on the patio at the new home of the blues The Rolling Oaks Sports Bar and Grill. It is an 8:00 pm start.
I still love my boys the Spurs

“Eat for a Cause” benefiting the President of the San Antonio Police Officers’ Association Teddy Stewart & his family. The 20-year SAPD veteran Teddy Stewart and his family arrived home to a house severely damaged by fire this past Sunday, May 21st. The fire consumed much of the structure and it has been deemed uninhabitable. His daughter Toni Stewart is one of our “Servers with a Smile” and is graduating from Madison High School next Tuesday. Please help us help them! Mention the “Stewart Cause” and Blue Cactus Cafe at Wetmore Store will donate $2 from every adult dinner entrée and $1 per beer/wine/margarita directly to the Stewart family! A bank account has been established at the San Antonio City Employees' Federal Credit Union and anyone wishing to donate may do so at any branch location or at the SAPOA office. Better Late Then Never: Oyster Bake Pics and Other Stuff
In accordance with the law of physics which states that "Rowan will take 10 times longer to perform any given task than anyone else in the spacetime continuum, regardless of the simplicity of said task," an addendum to the Law of Inertia, which states that an object at rest will remain at rest until given a swift kick in the butt, I am just now getting around to posting pics sent to me of Oyster Bake 2006 and Rob Zombie at Sunken Gardens.
So, without further procrastination, here we go:

There are a whole bunch more pics of Oyster Bake and Zombie in the Photos Section. So check 'em out.
In my defense, the reason I waited was that I was also going to put up some video clips from these shows at the same time. Between finding times that the contributor and I would both be online and the sheer amount of time it takes to send videos over the internet, it took quite a while to get all of the videos. Of course now, in accordance with Murphy's Law, which states that if anything can go wrong it will, now that I finally have all the videos and the time to clip them up and post them, it turns out that none of the video-editing software I have will open the videos. Also, I can't seem to find any freeware program that will convert them from the format they're in to a format I can work with.
I will eventually get the videos put up, I swear. Not because of any law of physics, but just cuz I'm freakin' stubborn.
Another thing I am is hopelessly unobservant, which means I just figured out that one of my video-editing programs has a feature called "auto adjust tone" and I can lighten up the videos that came out really dark. I tested it out on the recent video I took of The Killing Floor playing "Voodoo Chile" at 321 Max. It came out much better. The clips are larger and grainier, but now you can SEE THEM! They're also in wmv format, which means they're much smaller in file size. There are two clips over on the Video Page - one of the guitar solo and one of a jam with JCM on guitar with Tom Rimes on alto sax. So check those out, too.
As time permits (see the 1st law mentioned above to figure out how long that will take), I will lighten up the other videos that came out dark and repost them.

RIP Steve Cooper
from Blabbermouth.net:
Former S.A. SLAYER and JUGGERNAUT vocalist Steve Cooper (photo) passed away in the early morning hours of May 14 at a San Antonio, Texas hospital from complications due to kidney failure. Cooper, who was diabetic, had been in ill health and on dialysis for several years prior to his untimely death.

"Steve was a gentle soul, a beautiful person, and a great vocalist — his contributions to Texas heavy metal will never be forgotten", said longtime friend Liliana Martinez, who documented much of the vibrant early '80s Southern Texas metal scene, including SLAYER, as a photographer and contributor to Cutthroat, Texas Music News and the Unholy Book fanzine and other outlets. "We had a lot of good times together. Steve was an awesome metal presence, albeit a country boy at heart, and SLAYER were just incredible in their heyday. But find LIQUID SKY's 'Cry For The King' — it is the definitive Steve Cooper! It was the song that when we all first heard of Steve had us knowing he was more than just a metal singer. Steve loved music it ran through his veins. His finest hour came through in his work with S.A. SLAYER. He enjoyed the respect and admiration of all people who came to know him and his music. I will miss him immensely.... my dear friend, affectionately nicknamed Scooper. May you rest in peace... and yes, we know where you are going, hope to see you there someday."
Steven Lane Cooper first came to local prominence as the frontman of San Antonio favorites LIQUID SKY, also featuring guitarist Jonathan Grell (WINTERKAT, RHETT FORRESTER), whose only recorded output came in 1981 with "Cry For The King" on the 99.5 KISS-sponsored "Homegrown Album" compilation LP. Cooper then joined forces with bassist Don Van Stavern (PITBULL DAYCARE, ex-RIOT), drummer Dave McClain (MACHINE HEAD, ex-SACRED REICH), and guitarists Art Villareal and Bob Catlin in legendary Texas metal pioneers SLAYER (not to be confused with the L.A.-based act of the same name) who released their acclaimed debut EP, "Prepare To Die", in 1983 on the Rainforest label.
The band's explosive mix of early IRON MAIDEN, MERCYFUL FATE and ANGEL WITCH was further documented on their classic "Go For The Throat" LP, recorded with lead guitarist Ron Jarzombek (WATCHTOWER, SPASTIC INK) and released posthumously under the slightly altered S.A. SLAYER moniker some four years after the group's breakup. Cooper, Van Stavern, and McClain subsequently teamed up with RIOT guitarist Mark Reale in the short-lived NARITA. Cooper would re-surface with fellow Texas metallers JUGGERNAUT and contributed lead vocals on the band's 1987 sophomore album, "Trouble Within", before doing a short stint with East Coast-based Metal Blade labelmates EXXPLORER.
Condolences can be sent via e-mail to hpydragon@aol.com and will be forwarded to Steve's mother, Faye...The family has requested that in lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Structure (an excellent band) will be opening at 9:30, then a band from out of town will go on next. We'll take the stage around 11pm. This is our first headlining show and hope to have a good turnout. Come out and raise a little Hell with us and don't be afraid to come up to the stage and watch the show. As always, we appreciate the support.
Hope to see you there!
AntHill Society Video
I received an e-mail last month saying that AntHill Society was calling it quits and that their April 28th show would be their last. But today I received an e-mail from a DJ in Brownwood, who goes by the name Tie-dyed Tehuti online. As a DJ, he's had the chance to interview AntHill Society and introduce them onstage, and has become a big fan of their music.
He sent me this link to a really cool video he made of AntHill Society. Check it out.
And according to Tie-dyed Tehuti on this video, AntHill Society has NOT called it quits, after all! So, I guess...look forward to hearing more from them!
ADDED NOTE: Rumor confirmed. I just got an e-mail from AntHill Society that they're playing this Saturday at the Grapevine Mainstreet Day Festival in Grapevine, TX.

Updating Photos on sarocks.com
I'm working on updating the Band Photos section on sarocks.com. Unfortunately, due to my hard drive crashing, I have lost all my photos from over the holidays (i.e. Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. - pretty much November 2005 through January 2006). So they are missing. But most of the pics I have taken since then will be up on there within the next few days.
So far I have put up Disturbed at Sunset Station; Sons of Sancho, Sintense and Nightmare Sinema at Club Kristal; Sea Monkeys at Hooligan's and Papa Wood at BoozeHounds; and Texas Special at the Elbow Room and Suzi of Suzi Rock Page's birthday at Rock City.
Also, I had put up the pics of the Dimebag Darrell Guitar Art Tribute Six-String Masterpieces on the SA Rocks Yahoo Group, but I've had so many people here searching for pictures of them, I went ahead and put up a page of them over there, too. However, if you want to see large detailed close-ups of the guitars, you will need to go to the Yahoo Group.
As always, everybody is free to use the photos if they wish. Credit and a link would be nice. If you need a larger size of a photo (from Feb 2006 on, since the others were destroyed with my old hard drive, just let me know).

Johnny Drama at Sky Lounge
from Johnny Drama:
For the first time ever, Johnny Drama is playing at Sky Lounge this Friday night May 19, 2006. Some people have wondered if Sky Lounge is now a Hip Hop club. I can assure you that on Friday nights it's all about the rock and dance. That's why we've been asked to come on out and put on a show out there. This place was the old Jewels, in case you're wondering why it sounds familiar. Sky Lounge is located at 5500 Babcock at the corner of Babcock & Eckert.
The place is really nice and spacious (I called dibs on the couch by the rear of the place). Come on out and party with us. The drinks are great and the service is awesome. I know that you all will love it. There are quite a bit of people that have already said they're coming out so it promises to be wild and crazy...then again, that's what Johnny Drama's all about!! So make your plans to come out there with your friends. I attached a copy of the flyer so that you can forward it your friends...BRING IT!!

Euphoria
From an e-mail I received today:
I had the pleasure of going out and seeing the band, Euphoria on Saturday, May 13, 2006, and found myself transported to a simpler time in life when you could just kick back, drink your cold brew and let your worries vanish away. The music was explosive and memories of great times in my life came rushing back to me with the 80's and soft rock hits these guys were belting out. If you're looking for something a little different than the rock bands and want to be entertained by Euphoria come out and visit them at Roxy's this Saturday, May 20, 2006 and get ready to be taken back in time. The keyboard player, Jake (Originally from Deja-Vu), is totally insane and will have you in stitches. The guitar player, Anthony (Originally from Spitfire) is entertainment all by himself. The lead singer, Javier, has also played with Spitfire and has performed with many bands here in San Antonio.

Killing Floor Video
I stopped in for a little while at 321 Max last night to check the place out and visit with Kel. While I was there, I caught an awesome jam on video: The Killing Floor playing "Voodoo Chile" with Larry Rimes' brother Tom sitting in on alto sax. It turned into a 10-minute improv jam - so cool! There are 5 clips from it on the Video Page. The lighting is pretty dim due to a lack of frontlighting, but the sound is great! Check 'em out!
321 Max, by the way, is a nice place. Good amount of seating, some pool tables, very clean, great service! I wasn't crazy about where they put the band. It's behind the dance floor, which is raised, but the band area is not raised, so it's lower than the dance floor. The dance floor also has rails around it, which kind of obstruct the view of the band. Other than that, it seems like a cool place.

Kill Hannah at the Rabbit May 20
Kill Hannah will be at the White Rabbit in San Antonio on Saturday, May 20. The tour, with Clear Static and Shiny Toy Guns, continues throughout May.
Kill Hannah is currently putting the final touches on their new album "UNTIL THERE'S NOTHING LEFT OF US," which is scheduled for a July 25 release on Atlantic Records. The single "Lips Like Morphine" is already a favorite at their live shows (and can be heard on their myspace page - www.myspace.com/killhannah). Since their 1995 beginnings, the band has earned a reputation as one of America's most inventive and exciting rock combos. The band's killer power chords, catchy electronic loops, propulsive rhythms, and anthemic choruses have won them a dedicated following. Fueled by such songs as the triumphant "Kennedy" and the poignant "Raining All The Time," 2003's "FOR NEVER & EVER" brought the Chicago-based quintet into the mainstream. The band has also won over crowds with their pyrotechnic live shows, both headlining and touring with such heavyweights as Evanescence, Jane's Addiction, The All American Rejects, and Everclear.

So Long, Charlie: Psychoholics, The Jolly Garogers and Shandon Sahm at Kristal
I received notice recently that Charlie was leaving the Psychoholics and that his last show would be Thursday, May 11th, at Club Kristal. I felt I needed to go see his last show with the band. In a way, it’s kind of full circle for me...this is a band I saw years ago at Sneakers. Out of the many bands I saw there, this is one show that stands out for me. I also interviewed Charlie a couple of months ago for the Psychoholics Interview. So I felt I should go check out his last show with them.
I came in near the end of Shandon Sahm’s set...got to hear the last few songs. I didn’t even know they were scheduled to play and at first, I didn’t even know who I was watching. But, after talking to Shandon Sahm, I learned he used to be in the band Pariah, who I had also seen at Sneakers. After I got home, I thought about the name Sahm...went and looked at Shandon Sahm’s website, and sure enough he is the son of the late Texas music legend Doug Sahm.
My first thought was a cross between Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes and Mick Jagger, but their website uses the analogy Iggy Pop meets KISS., which is probably a more accurate description. Shandon wore silver elevator boots and pranced about the stage with a feather boa, singing straight-up uncomplicated rock and roll tunes, with a bit of southern rock and blues sneaking in from time to time. Basic rock, a little bit of glam, a lot of fun to watch; I wish I had gotten there in time to catch the whole show.
I knew a little about The Jolly Garogers from the review Darren did back in November. But reading and watching are two different things. Try to imagine a heavy metal version of The Pirates of Penzance, if you can. The songs are all pirate-themed. Lots of theatrics. The lead singer, Captain Phleabag, is a very vigorous performer, doing high kicks, jumping off the drum riser, waving the Jolly Roger, encouraging “aargh’s” all around. No one was made to walk the plank, but there was a duel between the Captain and The Dread Pirate Stagedive. Here is the aftermath:
Definitely a fun band to watch. Check them out at www.jollygarogers.com
There are also video clips of The Jolly Garogers doing a song I believe is entitled “Let’s Fight Tonight” over on the Video Page.
As I’ve mentioned before, I had only seen the Psychoholics once before...years ago at Sneakers and couldn’t stay for the whole show, so all I really remember was a guy running around in a Gumby costume and rumors that the singer exposed himself (Charlie assured me in the Psychoholics interview that it was a fake schlong). I remember them being energetic, theatrical and funny.
Well, there were no Gumby costumes nor false phalluses. In lieu of Gumby, Tim wore a kind of reverse tuxedo - black underneath, with a shiny white coat with tails, a white bow tie and a black bowler, carrying what I think was a riding crop (?). The energy, fun and humor that I remember was definitely still there, however, at least for most of the set...
I don’t know the details of what went on that caused the Psychoholics to split with Charlie, so I was just there to be there, not to choose sides. There were quite a few people, however, who were obviously there to make their allegiance known. As soon as the band went on stage, a small crowd gathered in front of Charlie, and there they stayed until Charlie moved to the middle of the stage to perform a song of his, “Mardi Gras.” They all moved over to center stage to “woo-hoo” him, take pictures and videos...at one point a black bra was placed on his head. (There are video clips of “Mardi Gras” on the Video Page, so you can check it out if you'd like.)
When “Mardi Gras” was over, Tim mentioned that over the last 15 years, the Psychoholics had gone through no less than 26 band members. Then Charlie packed up his equipment and left the club, followed by his flock of friends and fans. Another guitarist took his spot and the show went on.
I just stood there for a few minutes, sort of stunned. It felt like the end of the cutting-heads-in-hell sequence in that movie Crossroads (not the Britney Spears movie, the good one)...Steve Vai drops his guitar...a discordant jangle, feedback, silence...he walks offstage...then the music starts back up as if it doesn’t matter one bit. The devil has been vanquished...life goes on. I think my head jangled.
Looking back, I suppose the split was just done in usual Psychoholics irreverent, theatrical style, but at that moment, I was just thinking, “Is that it? No farewell to years of collaboration? No grand send-off? Not even an amicable parting-of-ways? Just a mention of how many members have been in the band, followed by a silent replacement of a longtime band member?” Charlie tells me not to be sad, but it did sadden me, and suddenly I didn’t want to be there anymore. So I left, too.

Sol Patch Recommends the Sea Monkeys
from Sol Patch:
Just wanted to let everyone know that this Saturday at the Guadalupe River Club on Junction Hwy. here in Kerr-patch will be the fabulous Sea Monkeys! The Sea Monkeys hail from San Antonio and are a great cover/original band. Now, I don't normally promote another band unless they're friends and are really great. Well, they fall into both categories!
What makes them so great? Well, for one, they feature Florin Sanchez, local home-boy and session musician. For those of you who might not have heard Florin, well Saturday will be the night to! He has won numerous awards nationally, and I think was the first ever recipient of the Texas Heritage Music Foundation's Scholarship Award! I PROMISE you all will enjoy yourselves! They are a great band! They have a variety of music and can play just about anything!
So, please, tell your family, friends, neighbors, ex-wives, cell mates, fellow chess club members, etc. and help us spread the word!
Again, THIS SATURDAY AT THE GRC, THE SEA MONKEYS! Show starts at 9:30!
Come out and party and dance the night away with us!

Masterbatour: Ministry & The Revolting Cocks
So, the plan was: I was going to leave the house at 6:00, get to Sunset Station early and check out the Dimebag Darrell guitars, then go check out Ministry, The Revolting Cocks and Pitbull Daycare with the Masterbatour. Of course, as usual, this plan didn’t quite work out as expected. At 5:45, the people who were supposed to go with me bailed. So, I had to find someone else to go in like, NO TIME! Luckily, at the SA Rocks Anniversary Party, I had met a girl who seemed like someone I could hang out with and got her phone number to possibly go to some shows with. So I gave her a call, and luckily, she was able to get free and go with me and bring a friend! Awesome. (I’ve been bitched at before for unthinkingly using someone’s real name on here, so I won’t give her name or her friend’s name, since I forgot to ask if I could, but she knows who she is! Thank you again...so awesome y’all could go!)
Well, I didn’t get to check out the Dimebag guitars beforehand, but I just went the next day (as I’ve already mentioned). And we didn’t get there in time to see Pitbull Daycare, which was a disappointment for me. I was looking forward to seeing them. I THINK I saw them one time at Sneakers, but I saw so many bands at Sneakers that I can’t really keep track. Anyway, I’ve been wanting to catch them (again?) for a while now and thought this was finally my chance, but no such luck.
The Revolting Cocks were just coming on as we approached Sunset Station. Unfortunately, by the time we got our tickets, got through the gates, grabbed some beverages and got up near the stage, the third song was over. So due to the accursed “first 3 songs” rule, I didn’t get any pictures of The Revolting Cocks. (I think Suzi of Suzi’s Rock Page did, but I don’t think she has them up yet...but you might check in there for photos.)
Until I saw them, I knew nothing about The Revolting Cocks but the name. I wasn’t sure what to expect. From the name, I kinda expected a hardcore punk metal band with maybe some cool obscene shit going on. It was nothing like that. Their sound was kind of like a less heavy Ministry. Like, where I’d call Ministry industrial metal, this band was industrial rock. Not quite as heavy as Ministry...but with the industrial sound and the jamming on a single riff kinda thing. Also a tad bit of a hip-hop sound now and then.
As I understand it, The Revolting Cocks are actually a side project of Ministry, with at least one of the Ministry members being in both bands. Indeed they did share a guitarist. But I don’t know much more about it than that.
And they were funny! The main singer was wearing a tuxedo and carrying, and often singing or shouting through, a megaphone. There were two guys who provided some vocals, whose other job seemed to be running around acting silly (which is fine with me...more of a “show” to watch). At one point, one of them climbed up on the speaker stacks, lay on his belly and pretended to be swimming. Some great guitar. Oh, and a cool chick bass player...always good to see a girl jamming her butt off!
One of the high points of the show was a version of Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?” (No, really!) complete with one of the aforementioned silly guys jumping around the stage dressed up as a large penis (or I guess in this case, a revolting cock). Another was during the encore, when the singer walked out in a slip and gloves and told a story about getting hit on by guys at a highway rest stop, and couldn’t figure out why they thought he was one of “them.” Okay, it was funnier when he told it...you have to picture a guy in a slip and...oh, never mind.
Anyway, short break, while they played stuff like Elvis and Eric Clapton, which we found odd, but we sang along anyway, lol!
Then....Ministry.

My main thought during Ministry was that I should have been in an “altered state.” I almost wish I did X, but I don’t do that. I didn’t even drink any beer, but I wish I had, because you really should enjoy Ministry with no inhibitions, where you can just let loose and let yourself flow to the rhythms. The I-had-drank-caffeine-all-day-and-was-drinking-more vibe is really not quite the right vibe for a Ministry concert. But that’s the state I was in...so be it.

Anyhow, the right mood notwithstanding, I did very much enjoy the show. All the microphone stands and the front of the drum kit are decorated with bones. The singer’s mic takes the form of a cross, with bones on the front, which he holds onto most of the time by the sidearms of the cross, and leans back and forth on, giving the impression of a hellion on a motorcycle, the sides of the cross being the handlebars.

Of course, I was waiting for my favorite Ministry song, “Stigmata”, which they performed during the second encore...I was starting to wonder if they would do it! But of course, they must perform that one! We actually had people slam-dancing in the VIP section....which is unusual. The people in that section usually tend to be much more “dignified” than that...but I thought it was pretty cool! I just backed up so I didn’t get slammed!

The highlight of the show for me was seeing a woman who was bound to a wheelchair, with what I would guess was crippling arthritis, who found the strength, with the help of her companion and the railing, to pull herself up so she could see and jam along. It just proved to me what music means to people and the strength that it gives to our souls.
