ALTER EGO kicks off Labor Day Weekend at LEGEND'S

from Alter Ego:

With a beautiful long weekend ahead, I'm sure tons of people will be hitting the highways, airports, train staions, whatever, to take advantage of that last few days of summer! But if you're staying close to home this weekend, there's a couple of shows you don't want to miss!

On FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, beginning at 9:30 P.M., ALTER EGO takes the stage again at LEGEND'S SPORTS BAR AND BILLIARDS, at 1305 SW LOOP 410, which is on the southbound access lane between Hwy 151 and Marbach Road, across from the Acadiana retaurant. This is a GREAT place to hang out on a Friday night, with tons of pool tables, a lounge area, and a huge music area with stage and dance floor. We love playing this Northwest Side club, and hope you'll join us in rocking the roof off of Legend's!

Alter Ego at Legends

On SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, head out to Boozehounds, just off Loop 410 on Perrin-Beitel for the SARocks.com Virgo Birthday Bash with The Killing Floor and Texas special. Looking forward to some birthday cake with Rowan and Kel!

Ruben V at Adobe Verde in Gruene Tomorrow Night

from Ruben V:

Just wanted to let you know about a very last minute gig we picked up! I know it’s short notice, but I’d really like to see you come out tomorrow!

THURSDAY, August 31st, 7:30 PM
We’ll be heading out to Gruene to play an acoustic gig at

ADOBE VERDE
1724 Hunter Road
Gruene, Texas
830-629-0777

Come on out, have dinner, and spend a little time with us!

Due to illness, we’ll be filling in for my friend, Monte Montgomery. Many thanks to him for recommending us, and our best wishes to him for a quick recovery. A big thank you to Paul at Adobe Verde letting us come out!

!!!CALLING ALL ACTIVISTS/ POETS/ VENDORS... BARRIO MASSIVE RETURNS: SEPT. 9TH!!!

from Bombasta:

I wanted to get in touch with yall and invite you out to participate in another Barrio Massive at Sam's Burger Joint on September 9th. Bombasta will be hosting the event again, this time we'll be joined onstage by Gonsemble (live hip hop soul de SA) and Rebel Crew (electro latino beats & rhymes de Houston/NYC). We'll also be joined by DJ Joe B (Houston) and breakdancing by Bboy Voodoo and crew (San Anto). So needless to say, this is gonna be a great show and I'm hoping everyone will be able to come out and participate.

Barrio Massive 6 Bombasta Gonsemble and Rebel Crew

I am currently reserving spots for any activists or vendors who would like to set up a table on the patio to either sell your wares or pass out information about your respective causes. As always, there is no house fee and two free admittance passes will be granted to each organization that attends. We've had great success in the past and this event has always served as a great opportunity for networking and making some money (vendors). For those of you who would like to participate, send me an email and we'll reserve a spot for your org. We only ask that you provide your own table, extension cord and arrive to set up at 8pm.

We are also inviting poets/spoken word artists who would like to participate onstage during the night's event. There are limited spots throughout the night- during breaks or ontop of the musical performances, where some spoken word consciousness would be greatly appreciated. If you are interested in participating, send me an email and we'll reserve a spot for you.

This is an open invitation to yourself or any other activist group, vendor or poet that would be interested in participating, so if you know of anyone who would be interested, please have them contact me. Barrio Massive is an attempt to bring us all together to celebrate art, music, life and resistance. We've had numerous people come to the shows in the past and the crowds have always proved to be very open minded and eager for change. I think this is a great opportunity for us all to come together and show some solidarity and celebrate La Vida Buena with friends, family and new collaborators. It's always a pleasure and honor to work with each and everyone of you; your attendance to these events is an important part of what we are trying to accomplish with Barrio Massive: Collaboration, Culture, Community and Activism!!!

A Mismatch Made in Heaven

from Hyperbubble:

Hey, SA Rockers!

We just wanted to drop by and say HI and let you know the latest in HyperbubbleLand. We've just returned from a mini-tour of the midwest, and are currently finishing up our new CD. But first, we're playing a show this Sunday at the Limelight with Blowfly...yep, BLOWFLY!...It's a mismatch made in heaven.

Blowfly and Hyperbubble at Limelight

We originally planned this show date to be our CD release party, however we've had so many new ideas and songs since we booked the date, we thought it would be best to delay the release so we can put some extra lovin' into the CD to make it super-fun.

But hey, that's cool...We miss our San Antonio friends and can't wait to play the new songs for you!

The show is this Sunday, September 3rd
at LIMELIGHT 2718 North St Marys ( san antonio ) 735 7775 19 year olds and up are welcome...and there is a full bar.

It's an early show, so everyone can make it back to work/school the next day without being worn out!

Click here to see BLOWFLY...you won't believe your eyes.

Thanks, and please leave us a message on the events page!

Back to School Bash

from Deja Vu:

OK San Antonio! The kids are back in school, the teachers are back at work, and the school zone speed limits are back in effect...don't let that ruin your fun! Deja Vu is throwing a Back To School Bash at Main St. Bar & Grill on Friday, September 8th. Last weekend was nuts...standing room only from about 10:00 on. We had a blast, and so did lots of other people. There were lots of good comments about local music getting better and better, and that made us feel good. We can use this as a way to get people out and supporting San Antonio's working musicians! Tell your friends, get there early, and plan on staying late! Main St. has always had the best service and coolest staff! Oh yes...there will be chicks. THERE WILL BE CHICKS!

10Stick from Diane

Wow! if you were not out at Roxy’s on Saturday night, you missed one hell of a show! In celebration of Javier’s birthday a lot of our local and talented bands showed up for the celebration. It was an exciting, electrifying JAM SESSION.

10 stick was jamming out and rocked the house.

Chris (Vocals and Keyboard), Javier (Vocals and Bass), Lew (Drums), Ned (Electric, originally from Madwagon) he helped out because our sweetheart Anthony was under the weather. One thing I love about these guys is they are comfortable with their group and do not feel threatened to turn over the mike or open up the stage for other musicians and Chris freakin rocks it with the best of them.

At one point we had Roxy (Bass player), Ned (Electric guitar) switched it out with Peter (Electric) and Sam (Drummer) from Madhouse on stage accompanying Chris. What can I say but it was great seeing everyone bring a little of their own flavor to the set. They definitely brought it.

Next from Prototype:
We had my personal favorite, Won (Drummer) this guy is one of the BADDEST drum players around and one HELL of a cutie, he mesmerizes me with his talent, Ernie (Electric guitar), and Rain on (Bass) these guys were last on set and just put the icing on the cake, they TORE IT UP and left us wanting more.

Oh and if you like to see chicks ROCK? You missed out on LEE, this hot little number went on stage to let the boys know she was serious about her drums and that she can play with the big boys. Roxy is also a hot little thing that tears it up on Bass and can play with the best of them.

Thanks 10 stick and all the guys who jammed out there on Saturday night….IT WAS AWESOME, had a blast.

Oh a special reminder this SATURDAY, September 2 at Boozehounds is ROWAN’s birthday bash, we all appreciate what she does for the local talent. Come on out and celebrate.

Groovin' Birthday and a Blissiversary

Last weekend I stopped in at Soho to say Happy Birthday to Matt Wolff of the Groove Movement and hear a bit of groovin' jams.

Matt Wolff of the Groove MovementThe Birthday Boy

Pleasant surprise - 51 Acres had agreed to open for the Groove Movement, so I got the "Full Weave." (If you don't know what means, read the Groove Movement Interview I did last year.) It's always great to hear these guys jam.

I hung around for a while, took lots of pictures. I never got to meet the famous (infamous?) Steve Hahn, who was there for the occasion, but that's ok. Though I did want to thank him for making my job more bearable when I used to do data entry. Nothing livens up a boring job like listening to Lisle & Hahn!

I also didn't get any cake. But that's ok, too. Anyway, here are some of the pics I took. (No videos cuz, stupid me, I forgot to buy extra batteries for my camera.)

51 Acres and Groove Movement in Full WeaveA Full Weave

Then I headed down the street to BoozeHounds, where Bliss was celebrating their 6th anniversary. Now, I've seen some people dissing Bliss around here now and then. I didn't believe them, because I've seen Bliss before, years ago at Papa Woody's. That bar is gone now, but Bliss is still alive and kickin' butt! So, I say ignore the haters. They're just jealous. There are many reasons to go see Bliss. Here are three:

1) Florin. This guy kicks major bootie on the guitar.

Florin with BlissFlorin

2) To try to get a picture of Rikk's face. Seriously, I never can get one!

Rikk with BlissRikk - He Really Does Have a Face

3) Chrissy Bliss. Don't let the package fool you. She may be all little and cute, but this girl's got a huge voice. She will rock your ass off!

Chrissy BlissChrissy Bliss

Oh, and if you look closely at the picture of Florin, you'll notice something on the curtain behind him. I saw it when I was going through my pictures and zoomed in on it, and sure enough, it was this:

SA Rocks StickerIt's an SA Rocks Sticker from the Anniversary Party!

So, Happy Birthday Matt! And Happy Anniversary Bliss! Thanks for all the great music!

If you'd like to check out these bands, here are some upcoming dates:

51 Acres
- Check 'em out on TV Sep 1st on KENS 5's "Great Day S.A." They'll be on around 9:45 am. Then go see them live at their CD release party that night at Rebar. 51 Acres will also be playing Incarnate Word's Wordstock 2006 on Sep 9th.

Groove Movement - You can catch them this Thursday (8/31) at Rebar with Zeale32 and Phranchyze 1, dealing out some "hip-jazz-funk." They'll also be at Limelight Sep 1st and at Revolution Room on the 9th.

Bliss - Sep 2 at Stone Werks at the Quarry (except you should at least stop by our Virgo Bash at BoozeHounds that night...then you can go see Bliss if you want; or you can just go see them same place on Sep 9). They'll also be at Legends Sports Bar on the 8th.

WOW! The crowd at the Margarita Pour-Off was INSANE. Thanks to all the great people of S.A. that now qualify for Short Term Disability after KILLING the Mosh Pit at Sunken Garden. You guys ROCK!!! The people in the seats WAY back were on their feet, and we just want everyone to know how much we appreciate it! It's great to see our stickers on cars around town, very cool! We're gonna be rockin the SoHo lounge tonight and Brooks Pub tomorrow. Hope to see some of you crazy people again this weekend!

Bliss at Stone Werks & Broadway 5050

Thank you all for helping celebrate our 6th year anniversary!! It was a blast!

But the party must continue so come out and see the band that spills more alcohol on stage than most bands drink in a night.

BLISS will be at Stonewerks @ the Quarry on Friday with an early start time of 9:00, Get there early because it's going to be a mad house this night.

Saturday we will be back at Broadway 5050, great food, great bartenders and great rock-n-roll. This a special place for us, hope to party with you there!!

Alter Ego BOOZEing it up MAINly!

Well, not really ... just trying to use a turn of phrase to tell everyone where ALTER EGO is heading to this weekend! After a fantastic return to Hooligan's last week, we're ready to head back to a few of our regular monthly stops we enjoy so much!

On FRIDAY, AUG. 25, we're over at BOOZEHOUNDS, 8531 PERRIN-BIETEL, right off Loop 1604, and next to the Lacks store. Scott and company KNOW how to take care of the bands and the customers there, pool tables are plentiful, and the bartenders are gorgeous! There's no cover and the music starts about 9:30 p.m.

On SATURDAY, AUG. 26, we head a little further north to rock out MAIN STREET, 13477 WETMORE ROAD, just off Thousand Oaks. This place is just a lot of fun to hang out, with a great bar staff and friendly atmosphere, and a huge patio to chill out on as well. So if you're heading to the Godsmack show Saturday at the Verizon, and looking for a good place to party afterwards, just head down Loop 1604, hang a left on Bulverde and you'll be there is a few minutes! No cover, as usual, and we begin at 9:30 p.m.

Alter Ego

On another note, keep an eye on the EDGE Magazine over the next few months! The "Best of 2006" balloting will be starting again soon, and we'd be honored if you'd consider us in any appropriate categories! We also have an ad in the EDGE every month, and it's a great source for local and national music info, and even musician referrals!

Thanks to all of you out there who continue to support the local music scene and continue to allow us to entertain you! - Alter Ego

Johnny Drama: Soccer & Starlight

from Johnny Drama:

This has certainly been a long week in my book. Now that it's Thursday, I can almost taste the weekend...and it's so GOOD!! We're getting ready for a few shows in the next few days that will most certainly be a festival in their own right.

Tomorrow we're playing at UTSA for the Women's Soccer Team Pre-Game Fiesta and you're all invited. It's the home opener for the Lady Roadrunners and they want to make it a rockin' time...they decided to call us anyway - HA HA HA!! Seriously though, you're all invited to come check out the show and stick around for the game. The stage will be set up by the soccer field at UTSA, under some great shade, and we'll be playing from 5:30 - 7:00 PM. We have some giveaways just for this event so you better get yourself down their for these limited edition freebies!!

Then Saturday will be UTSA Night out at the Starlight Room and we will all be able to benefit from it. I spoke to the owners and they have agreed to let the whole DRAMA Nation take advantage of the $1.75 Bud Light draft and $4.00 Frozen Drink specials they have set up for this special night. So gather up all your friends, and their friends, and lets all meet up at the Starlight Room @ 1031 Patricia (near Blanco & West Ave). It's next door to what used to be Iguana Bay. The place is sweet , the staff is great and the party will be going strong!!

Updates: Band List, Upcoming Concerts

Just a note. The band list on sarocks.com is now complete (as complete as something that is ever-changing can get, anyway), so the list on here has been deleted. Also, I have updated the national-act concert schedule over there, so you might want to check that out.

I still need to update the venue list. I would like to get back on track with show reviews, cd reviews, etc., which I've been very behind on! I'm trying! Bear with me.

Thank You, Johnny

I would just like to say a public thank you to JOHNNY BOSQUEZ for donating to SA Rocks. This is the first time someone has offered to help who was associated with neither a band nor a business related to music. Johnny is a rock music fan, loves to check out live music, thinks this is a cool site and wanted to help. That's awesome. THANKS, JOHNNY!!

You Rock

GuitarZone: The Clean Routine

The latest lesson, "The Clean Routine" by Ernie Pena, is up over at sarocks.com in The Guitar Zone. Ernie discusses how Rush's "2112" and Alex Lifeson's guitarwork inspired him to come up with his own clean guitar solos. Interesting use of a capo. Check it out!

As always, Anthony Castilla and Ernie Pena are eager to have other guitarists add their wisdom to The Guitar Zone. If you play guitar and would like to contribute, contact Anthony. You can find his contact information in The Guitar Zone.

Cottonfields & Crossroads

This is a preview of Hector Galan's feature music documentary on Los Lonely Boys that will open in SA on Friday, Sept. 8th at three Santikos Theatres- Rialto Cinema, Silverado, and Mayan Palace. It's Los Lonely Boys: Cottonfields and Crossroads and it's been getting rave reviews.

Here's what Michael Corcoran of the Austin American Statesman had to say about it:

Although the bands improbable rise from humble beginnings is the film's main story line, "Cottonfields" is also a compelling exploration of Mexican American culture, of wearing Stacy Adams shoes to high school when all the other kids are wearing Nike...

Alter Ego on the Strip & Back at Hooligan's!

from Alter Ego:

Whew! What a wild weekend we had, with great crowds at Tripp's and Pat O'Brien's last weekend! I don't think I've EVER seen that many Hurricanes imbibed as at Pat O's last Saturday. Thank you to all our friends that braved downtown traffic and parking fees to join us for a hot night on the patio!

This weekend finds ALTER EGO at two very different venues. On FRIDAY, AUG. 18, we head back to PAPA RAY's (http://www.myspace.com/paparays) at 2407 N. ST. MARY'S, beginning at around 9:45 p.m. This is a very cool place to hang out, listen to live music, shoot some pool, whatever you like, plus you've got the White Rabbit and the Mix right there on the same block!

On SATURDAY, AUG. 19, we return to HOOLIGAN'S BAR & GRILL at 13920 I-35 NORTH, next to the Live Oak Cinema(http://www.hooligansbarandgrill.com/). It's been a while since we played this huge club in Live Oak, and the band is truly fired up to rock the face off this place. So if you're looking to continue the party after seeing the great bands playing at the Margarita Pour-Off, just head up Interstate 35 and rock out the rest of your night with us!

Alter Ego at Papa Rays and Hooligans

We've got new material from the Cult, HIM, the Raconteurs, System of a Down and more to play for our friends! There is no cover charge for either of these locations, so you have more moolah to spend on having a good time! Anytime you need to know when and where the band is playing, just stop by http://www.thebandalterego.com or http://www.myspace.com/thebandalterego for the most up-to-date information. Thank you to everyone in San Antonio who supports local music, no matter who your favorite band is! Rock out with your ...well, you know!

Update for those of you who caught our earlier shows. We are consistently getting better and better. We are not playing most of the same ol songs everyone else is playing (unless Requested) (there’s nothing wrong with that). Last Friday 08/11/06 we did awesome at Pat O’Briens the folks at Pat O’Briens enjoy their music in a variety of styles; I am proud to say we pleased them. We purposely did NOT invite too many people we wanted to see what kind of response we would get on our own and it was great.

Saturday went awesome considering some business communications went strange. We invited a TON of people to Club SOHO. We were bumped & not correctly told, so if you were at club SOHO and it was packed, it might have been because one band I never heard of got our crowd. I want to apologize to my friends and family on making a drive for nothing.

For those of you who have not seen us, well there are plenty of chances coming up! Visit our website or myspace:

BLISS-ful Birthday!!!

from Bliss:

Happy birthday to who??? To us, that’s who!! This weekend we celebrate are 6 year anniversary as a collective. And there’s not a damn person we have to thank for that……. except for you!!!!! Our friends that has helped us continue this ride for so long.

Now 6 years ago were many beers and Jagermeister ago, so we are not to sure which weekend in August we started, so we are going to celebrate for two weeks!!! Only BLISS dares to keep the drinks pouring for half a month!

But lets talk about this weekend. Friday Night we start the carnage at BOOZEHOUNDS, at 410 & Perrin Beitel, an appropriate place to start our party! Big room where our soundman JT allows the volume knob to creep up a little.

Saturday we start the party early, with an appearance at the 2006 99.5 Margarita Pour Off. How else to open a show but with a band that will probably get about 45 minutes of sleep due to the party the night before. We’ll start at 1:00 p.m. Ah… margaritas!! Breakfast of Champions.

Then that evening you can come see what’s left of us at Pat O’Brien’s deep in the heart of downtown San Antonio. Great atmosphere and even better music.

Come by and help celebrate this auspicious occasion this weekend, and THANK YOU for making all of this possible.

RIKK, FLORIN, CHRISSY, STEVO, JOEY, J.J.

Atomic Playboys, Pirate Songs and N'Somnia

So, last Friday (Aug 4 - yes I’m way behind as usual), I went up to BoozeHounds to talk to Scotty about the party, but he wasn’t there yet. So I hung around and checked out The Atomic Playboys until he got there.

Atomic Playboys

They were doing acoustic that night, which I wasn’t expecting. I really dug “No Excuses” in acoustic version. Wasn’t as crazy about some of the 80's tunes on acoustic. But the rest sounded good.

There are two videos of The Atomic Playboys on my YouTube:
1) Radiohead “Creep”
2) Weezer “Hashpipe”

Check ‘em out. They’re pretty dark, even after lightening them up (Frontlighting, people!!).

Saturday night, I went out with a very good friend of mine who was having some man troubles (you dang guys!). She needed a night out, and wanted to go to the monthly Ren Gathering out on the patio at Sam’s Burger Joint. Campbell and Wilson were playing. These guys were pretty entertaining. They do “Celtic and Heritage” music...some cool pirate songs. I really enjoyed “Drunken Sailor.” What do you do with a drunken sailor early in the morning? Evidently there are quite a few options, including shaving his belly with a rusty razor (ouch!).

Campbell and Wilson

Campbell and Wilson

They were having a raffle to win various objects, so even though I NEVER win anything, I bought a few tickets, and guess what? You got it! I actually won something! A brass compass (which DOES work...you guys were wrong), a little brass hourglass and a tiny collapsible spyglass, “guaranteed to bring objects one foot closer.”

3 Piece Compass Hourglass and Spyglass Brass Set

If I understood correctly, this 3-piece set once belonged to this guy. Thanks, Captain Jack! I'm all set to sail!

If you like Celtic, Medieval, Renaissance style music, I found out about a cool site for it. It’s Renradio.com. Check it out.

I had given my friend a list of bands that were playing nearby to go see after the Ren Gathering was over, and she chose N’Somnia at Snoop’s. So we headed up there, dragging a male friend of hers with us. This guy drank 3 huge TANKARDS of beer at Sam’s, then drank some more at Snoop’s and ended up passing out in the bathroom for, like, 45 minutes. So a lot of our time at Snoop’s was occupied with getting this guy woken up and figuring out how he was going to get all the way home to Helotes in his condition. But it was fun nevertheless.

Also, the two videos I have of N’Somnia on YouTube (Stranglehold and Immigrant Song) have gotten quite a good reception from YouTubers. So I took this opportunity to get another N’Somnia video to put up there. Here’s a cool one. It’s Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall part II,” complete with “The Happiest Days of Our Lives” leading into it. Great job!
