Hey guys! Sorry if you went to Bennigan's last Saturday but with a nice river flowing through the tent and all the lightning, it was probably best to cancel. Anymawho, this Saturday we'll be playing at Roxy's so come on out if you have a chance and hang out with us. Matt (guitar) is out of pocket that night but we have none other than the great Ernie Cruz to sit in with us. We're looking forward to it and hope to see some of y'all out there. Visit our website http://www.deadringerzone.com for maps and details.
Peace!

10Stick last gig at Main Street Saturday
10Stick’s last gig at Main Street Saturday 9/30/06
This will be a fun last show, it was a nice run & thanks to everyone for the help and support.
In late April we started out as Debbie Murphy’s from Spectrum Talent cancellation band to fill for fun (when bands would cancel shows) and now it's time for us to return to our Musical endeavors. We might pop up once in while for a cancellation but that’s about it.
We all are good friends and family so this is tuff but we all have to move on and gravitate to our musical styles and talents not to mention family and financial responsibilities – you can't make a living on 50 bucks or so a show LOL. It does make for good weekend money! LOL
NOTE: Ernie Cruz will be doing guitar duties with 10stick Friday 09/29/06 night at the Trap. (This dude is one hell of a guitar player)
Valdo from Nemesis and will be with us Saturday at Main Street on bass for a couple of sets until Xavier gets back in town.
Thank you Ernie Cruz and Valdo and Nemesis for helping us in a bind.
Again we welcome people to come up and Jam with us (note: please know the whole song first before you come up and make yourself look bad and us in the process) none the less please musicians or bands come up and have fun with the band if you like.
Back to you – Randy Beamer
Proposal: JAM Hour
Sent to me by mlabay (sounds like a great idea to me!):
A proposal: to any local radio station (i don't care which one) that has the balls to start the "Joe Anthony Memorial Hour" - JAM
A full hour once a week to play all the great music we never hear anymore, music introduced to us by the Godfather of Rock and Roll.
If any audio still exists of Joe himself, that would be awesome to hear again as well.
We need a forum where people can post lists of songs by artists for consideration.
I'll go first:
Obligatory Intro Instrumental by: Loudness (i forget the title)
April Wine-Weeping Widow
April Wine-Get Ready For Love
Deep Purple-Burn
Emerson Lake and Palmer-Knife Edge
Face Dancer-Cry Baby
Fist-Open the Gates
Fist-Who Did you Love?
Frank Marino-Hang On
Frank Marino-Land of 1000 Nights
Harry Nilsson-Jump into the Fire
Humble Pie-Hot and Nasty
Judas Priest-Beyond the Realms of Death
Montrose-Rock the Nation
Moxy-Time to Move On
Motorhead-Ace of Spades
Ratt-Tell the World
Robin Trower-Somebody Calling
Rogue Male-Crazy Motorcycle
Scorpions-Sails of Charon
Shooting Star-Last Chance
Ted Nugent-Great White Buffalo
Three Dog Night-Woman
Yesterday & Today-Struck Down
Tygers of Pan Tang-Do it Good
Triumph-Rock and Roll Machine
Godz-Gotta Keep a Runnin
Trapeze-Midnight Flyer
ELO- Get it Out of My Head
Yes-Tempus Fugit
Saxon-Strangers in the Night
Savaatage-Sirens

ALTER EGO - Fast Times In San Antonio and U-City!
Thanks to all the great folks who came out to Pat O'Brien's last Saturday despite the stormy weather. Even though the band had to move inside and upstairs, the place was wall-to-wall people having a great time! Folks were spilling out onto the patio and hallway, and the management had to bring in more tables and open the back room to just to make room for everyone!
Coming up this weekend, we get to stay indoors at a pair of fun places to play. On FRIDAY, SEPT. 29, beginning at 9:30 p.m., the band heads Northwest to the SPEEDWAY SPORTS BAR, 8811 GRISSOM, right across from Bill Miller's. The staff is great here and it's a friendly, unpretentious spot to enjoy great music, great friends and great drinks!
On SATURDAY, SEPT. 30, the band heads Northeast to land at BILLY D'S, 1805 PAT BOOKER RD., in Universal City, about two miles outside Loop 1604. It's been a long time since we've played here, and we're looking forward to having a great night with our Northside Crew!
Both shows start at 9:30 p.m. and neither place charges a cover! Make sure you check the band's websites at:
www.thebandalterego.com or
www.myspace.com/thebandalterego
to keep up on where and when we are going to be in YOUR part of town! We've got Steve's birthday celebrations at Hooligan's and Roxy's next week, so make sure you don't miss those, because he's celebrating the big ... dare I say it .. 5-0!
On behalf of Paul, Tony, Steve and Bruce, thank you for supporting ALTER EGO and the San Antonio music scene!

Those who know me, know that I luvs me some Chacho's food after a show :-)
So come on out and have a great time with some drinkin', dancin' and then we'll head over and grab some grub afterwards.

Funeral procession from Cove to Esquire!
from Mitch Webb and the Swindles:
This Wednesday marks the September finale of our early evening Cove gigs. How acoustic is it some of you might ask? Not so acoustic really. We just sit on chairs and it kinda looks like a bad San Antonio version of MTV Unplugged.
Come on out and bask in our acoustic glory as we congratulate Lisa & Sam on their 15th Wedding Anniversary!
Thanks to the Cove for having us this last month. It has been a lot of fun!. If you want to find the Cove just click on their logo and you will be transported to their land!
At 9:15 we will begin a funeral procession from the Cove to the Esquire!
A note from the Esquire: The Oldest Continually Operated Business on the River Walk will close its doors on Wednesday, September 27th, to allow for its evolution into “The Esquire Tavern and BBQ House”. The Esquire Tavern has celebrated 73 years of continual operation on the River Walk and over 50 million beers have crossed the age worn bar top of the Longest Bar in the State of Texas, while hundreds of thousands of customers have bent their elbows at this infamous Tavern. It is listed in “Ripley’s Believe it or Not” for holding 5,973 bottles of Lone Star Longnecks, on its venerable bar top.
This 5th Generation Tavern holds just as many memories for its owners. Markets change, times change, and due to these changes, owners Rick Grinnan and Goodhue Smith will close the Tavern for remodeling and re-emergence as a new and improved downtown tavern and eatery. “Some Things Never Change”, but like all good things, they sometimes do, and “a new venue is required on the River Walk” replies Rick Grinnan. The closing of the Tavern will allow the owners to transform this institution into “The Esquire Tavern and BBQ House”, which will begin another chapter for this downtown icon. “Maintaining its historic charm will be a priority”, states partner, Grinnan. The plans call for a new and improved Esquire Tavern to have two levels. The River level will have River Walk and interior dining facilities which will serve traditional Texas BBQ. The street level will continue to house the original bar with additional dining, banquet and dancing facilities. Families and patrons can belly up to the Longest Bar in Texas and enjoy an ice cold Root Beer or a more traditional adult beverage. “This culminates a dream we have for this time honored Tavern, a marriage of the old and the new”, says Grinnan.

Time Change for Queensryche
This is probably old news, but I just learned about it, so I thought I'd pass it on just in case:
Please be advised – Due to routing issues, the Queensryche performance time at the Majestic Theatre for September 25, 2006 has been changed from 7:30pm to 9:00pm. Any tickets which have already been purchased will be honored for the new time.
Bassist Wanted: Music Comic Strip
This guy, Porter Mason, sent me an e-mail about his music comic strip, "Bassist Wanted" and I checked it out and ended up reading every one of them. I thought all the musicians and music fans who frequent this blog would enjoy them, so I've add "Bassist Wanted" to the sidebar. Check it out (scroll down...you'll find it). Very funny!

A Few Things
I just wanted to say a couple of things...
First...there are bands who have submitted things to SA Rocks...cd's for review, bands to be added to the band list, etc., that may not have been done yet. I really am not just goofing off, so I'd like to explain. It's easier to add many bands to the list at once than it is to add one or two a day, so this is something I do usually once a month. So if you've submitted a San Antonio band, it should be on the list soon. If you submitted a band that is not from San Antonio, it will never be on the list. I only list SA bands.
CD reviews take me HOURS...like pretty much all day. I can't just give it a listen and type up my opinion. I listen to a cd several times to get the feel, then I go back and listen to each song closer, then I listen to the songs that interest me the most several more times. Then I finally start actually writing the cd review. I'm anal when it comes to writing. I can agonize over the wording of one sentence for 30 minutes if I can't get it to say what I'm trying to convey. I usually do reviews when I have a whole day free, and I haven't had a free day recently and probably won't for a few weeks, so bear with me if you're waiting on a cd review.
Second...for the last month or two, I have been sticking close to home and only going out on Fridays or maybe for a couple hours on a Saturday. This also is partially due to having a lot going on lately. And when I stick close to home, my options are limited. Mostly cover bands at Soho or BoozeHounds. I enjoy these shows very much, but I would like to cover more original bands. Here's my problem: there are very few venues close to my house that have original bands. Club Kristal is one, but I haven't been able to make it out on Thursdays recently. Also, I like to have a few beers when I go out and I don't like to drive very far after a few beers. When Staci (remember her?) moved to Houston, that left me without someone to go to shows with. She rarely drank and would drive me home. Plus, many of the venues that have original bands are not in areas that I feel comfortable going to alone. So, until I find someone who likes to go check out different bands and is willing to chauffeur me around, I may have to stick closer to home. I am working on this.
So, as I said, bear with me, and understand that I don't want to do a mediocre job (on reviews) and that it is dangerous for a woman to walk through a dark parking lot at 2:00 am alone.
One final note: I would love to get more reviews on shows, cd's, etc. from other people, so if you've seen a show or purchased a cd of a San Antonio band recently and would like to comment on it, please feel free to send it to me.

Johnny Drama: The Falls & The Place
from Johnny Drama:
Well, it's the Thursday and we have some breaking news for you. We're BACK at THE FALLS this Friday night!! That's right, we were just there this past Friday and they're having us back for more. I know a lot of you came out and tried to get in but couldn't because they reached capacity early. I tell you folks to try and make it out early and now you know why :-) They reached their max capacity of about 250 people by 11:00 PM and then people were having to wait at the door for others to leave.
I have to say that it was an awesome time out there. We had been looking forward to rockin' out THE FALLS and it did not disappoint. The people were great and everyone was having a blast. The pictures are up on the website for you to check out...in case you didn't make it in :-)
www.SADRAMA.com
This Friday will be no different, so make your way out there EARLY and party with us. It's going to be a big party as they have the UV VODKA PARTY out there as well. So make your plans now and get yourselves out there as early as possible, so you don't risk not being able to get in.
Saturday we're helping some friends of ours celebrate the re-grand opening of THE PLACE SPIRITS EMPORIUM. A group of good friends of ours just bought it out a few weeks ago and have done some renovations and they want to break it in with a JOHNNY DRAMA style party. So come on out and see what THE PLACE has to offer. It's located at 7250 Bandera Rd @ Eckert Rd.

Tool Postponed part II
I've had quite a few people to the blog today looking for information about the postponed Tool concert. I read in the newspaper today that Maynard James Keenan was sick and had lost his voice and that the show is expected to be rescheduled for early 2007.
Evidently guitarist Adam Jones called into 99.5 KISS and apologized, saying that "Maynard's got fever, he's coughing up stuff, he's hoarse" and "you just need to hold on to your tickets and we'll try to swing back around on this tour or on the next tour."
KISS also has a link to what's supposed to be L.A. Lloyd talking to Jones, but when I tried to watch it, I got a sports interview instead, so I don't know. Evidently it's about Monday's show in Houston (where I understand Tool only played like 9 songs then left the stage) and rescheduling the San Antonio date.
OK, that's all I know!

Johnny Drama: Diez Y Seis
from Johnny Drama:
Is it me, or do we always have some sort of partying going on? Last week was the Labor Day holiday and now we have the DIEZ Y SEIS de SEPTIEMBRE coming up this Saturday. Just a brief history lesson on that holiday. DIEZ Y SEIS translates as sixteen in English. Now we all now that for a very long time pay day would fall on the 1st and 15th of the month. Because of this, my peoples (Mexicans), decided to throw a big party in celebration of pay day...but it just didn't sound as cool saying el DOS de SEPTIEMBRE. That's why they waited until the 16th. I mean listen to it...DIEZ Y SEIS de SEPTIEMBRE...that's impressive. September was just a month that was randomly chosen. I'm kidding...it's the day the Mexican people began the revolt against Spain for their independence. All I know is that it gives us one more day to celebrate :-)
Of course, JOHNNY DRAMA, is going to make a whole weekend out of it!! We're going to be rockin' it out on both Friday and Saturday. Friday we'll be at The Falls for the first time. It's located @ 226 W. Bitters, next door to the Embassy theaters. This place is great, as those of you who have been there would know. It's a pretty big place but it gets packed in there.
For that reason, you might want to make your plans to be with us on Saturday night at the Starlight Room located @ 1031 Patricia. It's definitely going to be great on Saturday as well. The owners over there are working on getting a few surprises lined up for that night. I can't say what that is because I've been sworn to secrecy, but it should be pretty interesting. So come and celebrate the DIEZ Y SEIS de SEPTIEMBRE with us at the Starlight Room on Saturday.

Review: Los Lonely Boys Cottonfields and Crossroads
A month ago, if you had asked me what I thought of Los Lonely Boys, I would have said, “They’re ok.” This opinion would have been based on my reaction to one song: “Heaven.” Until a few weeks ago, that was the only song I had heard by Los Lonely Boys, and I thought it was ok.
On August 20th, I received a message on MySpace from Evelyn Ledesma Galan, co-producer of Los Lonely Boys Cottonfields and Crossroads, requesting my help in getting the word out about the opening of this movie here in San Antonio this past Friday.
I checked out the preview on producer Hector Galan’s MySpace page and heard the song “Cottonfields and Crossroads” for the first time. I immediately added this song onto my Napster playlist.
And today (Sunday) I went and saw the movie.
This is not your typical “rockumentary,” with some narrator leading you through a timeline of the rise and fall of a rock star.
This is a story of how, with hard work, patience and passion, a dream can come true.
Enrique Garza, growing up in the cottonfields of West Texas, had one dream: to make his life by playing his music for people. He has worked hard all his life to fulfill this dream. Enrique never made it big playing his country music in Nashville, as he had hoped. But he poured his love for music and his dream into his sons - Henry, Jo Jo and Ringo Garza - Los Lonely Boys. I guess sometimes it takes more than one generation to make a dream come true.
It’s more than just about the music, however. It’s about familia. Struggle, hardship, heartbreak, loneliness...joy, laughter, sharing, love...holding each other up no matter what. It’s about culture. Growing up as a “Chicano” in West Texas...discrimination, conjunto music, cantinas, barrios, zoot suits and Stacy Adams shoes.
The movie follows a loose timeline, meandering forward through time, as Los Lonely Boys, their friends and family talk about their experiences and emotions through the various periods of their life. It’s more arranged by subject than by date. The “Cottonfields” section is about their background; the “Crossroads” section is about when the boys began to veer toward their own style of music and away from their father’s. The timeline is punctuated by songs that make you feel the emotion of that time.
Leaving, I felt like I had just spent an hour and a half talking to Los Lonely Boys, with them occasionally playing me a song, not like I had just watched a movie.
Galan did an excellent job of bringing the movie around full circle and tying the end to the beginning. Very heartfelt and inspiring. I highly recommend seeing this movie. I thank Evelyn Ledesma Galan for letting me know about this movie. And for making me remember not to judge a band by one song.

Groove Movement featuring: Zeale32 and Phranchyze1 Live @ The Revolution Room, Saturday, Sept.9th. Music starts @ 10PM.
Johnny Drama Update - Change for Saturday
from Johnny Drama:
There has been a change of plans for this Saturday night. We will not be downtown at Pat O'Brien's. Instead, we'll be getting our 'WINGS" at THE HANGAR located at 8203 Broadway. This opportunity has presented itself and we could not pass it up folks.
Look at it this way, you don't have to pay for parking or a cover charge and the you don't have to try and remember what parking garage your car is in :-)
THE HANGAR is an awesome place...and that's no lie. So come on out and party with us on what has become an inaugural weekend for JOHNNY DRAMA. Two great new places for us and we want to share it all with you. So we'll see you there. Here's the finalized line up for this weekend, starting tonight!!

Reminder: Cottonfields and Crossroads Opens
Just wanted to remind everyone that the Los Lonely Boys rockumentary opens today (Friday, Sept. 8). This sounds like an interesting movie.
Check your listings; it will be at Santikos: Mayan Palace, Rialto, Northwest Theaters.
See www.loslonelyboysmovie.com for more information.
"The film was four years in the making and captures a moment in time when the stars finally aligned in Los Lonely Boys' favor after years of struggle and hardship. It weaves a historical and cultural perspective on brothers Henry, JoJo and Ringo Garza, highlighting their Mexican American roots and musical influences. The Garza brothers come from a long line of working musicians- music has always been a way of life for them. Like work in the cottonfields, music also brought the family a means of survival. The film traces the early days as the young family band cuts its teeth learning from their father as he takes them to play in country bars and Mexican cantinas in and around San Angelo Texas. We travel with them to Nashville where they endure turmoil and heartbreak. These life experiences captured so eloquently by Galán's camera reveal a compelling portrait of a young band of brothers who against all odds, break out of poverty and find the American rock n roll dream."

10Stick Weekend - And Calling It Quits After This Month
10Stick at Billy D's Friday 9/8/06 and a special line up Saturday 9/9/06 at the new Brooks Pub.
10Stick is playing the month of September and calling it quits for a while. If you have not seen us yet please come support one of the better bands in town that has a lot of talented and entertaining players.
The show must go on! Some of us will be back in some capacity early next year. Some members have job schedules and family concerns to deal with at this time. We all are like family; heck, some of us are family, so things happen for a reason. Can't stop doing what you love to do; playing music and entertaining people is very satisfying and a rush.
It’s been bad ass!

ChrisLopezBand This Weekend
from the Chris Lopez Band:
Here's our schedule for our friends & fans, look forward to seeing you there:
Thursday - the Falls - the band
Friday - BarFly - the band
Saturday - Charlie Brown’s Sports Bar - acoustic solo
Cd update - we're in the studio over the next few weeks and are looking towards a cd release & party around the Halloween time frame (there's a spooky thought). More to come later.
P.S. - To those of you who may have come out on Monday at Tequila Republic or at Bombay Wednesday - sorry for the inconvenience, we didn't get word til last minute on cancellations at both these venues and weren't able to get the word out. Hope you weren't inconvenienced, but in both cases we didn't know either and in one instance wasted gas & time driving to a closed bar. We appreciate our fans and do our best to stick to reputable venues, but unfortunately it doesn't always work out. Unfortunately this happens way too often; it’s a tough business, especially for those of us who do this full time for a living. Thanks for everyone's support.

Nemesis & Virgo Bash: Review by Diane
Nemesis
www.nemesisband.com
Friday Night:
Roxy’s always has such great talent performing at their establishment. I had the pleasure of catching Nemesis and their assembly of talented musicians. I have to say that I was very impressed but I should have not been surprised because I’ve seen Valdo (Bass) before and know that this silent giant is thunder just waiting to erupt. John (lead guitarist) was lightning and ripped the heavens open, he is sooo freaking great and yet so humble. Such talent and such spectacular show these 2 guitarists put on, very entertaining. The lead vocalist, Roy, is fantastic and so down to earth, definitely has a great sense of humor. Please do not let me forget blue eyes, Jeff (Drummer), don’t forget to learn our song, Jeff……Blue eyes in between my - - - - -s, YOU REMEMBER, MEMBER? It was such a pleasure meeting all of you hope to catch you again. ROCK ON! Make sure to log on to their website for future shows.
Saturday Night:
Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate the Virgo Birthday Bash! I know a lot of our local bands had to work that Saturday and Rowan knew this but there was still a great turnout. Anyway I do not think she could have handled all the beer that would have came her way if ALL you guys showed up. I got to check out the KILLING FLOOR, and Texas Special, two very awesome and entertaining bands, thanks guys for the wild entertainment, I’ll definitely catch you guys again.
ROCK ON!
Diane
P.S. It was such a pleasure meeting everyone, thanks for the invite.

More Party Pics on MySpace
I was in party mode the other night, not so much in picture-taking mode, so I only got a few pics from the Virgo Bash - just the cake and some band pics. But Kel took lots of people pics and made them into a slideshow. Thanks Kel! The slideshow is too wide to put up on here, so it's over on SA Rock's MySpace Page, if you'd like to check it out.
Ah, So Much Fun!!!
We had SOOO much fun at the Virgo Bash last night!
Thank you so much to everyone who stopped by and hung out! I want to thank everyone by name...there were so many, I'm not sure I can name everyone! Plus, dangit, every time I turned around, there were more beers in front of me!! Contributes to memory loss, lol!
Let's see...Kel, Staci, Darren, Alfonso, Denise, Scott, Casey, Cris, Paul, Ben, Donna, Nathan, Steve, Robert, Leo, Guido, Diane, Gary...EVERYONE! Thanks so much for coming!
Oh, and special thanks to Kurt Cobain
for gracing our cake! (Yeah, his guitar fell out of his hand...)
Even though they made us blow out the candles multiple times for the sake of pictures.
Extra special thanks to Texas Special and The Killing Floor for the awesome jams all night! I've been waiting for this jam since the Elbow Room burnt down!
Started off with some jams from The Killing Floor. JCM always amazes on guitar!
And we got a Jack Solo! Whenever Jack stands up from his drums, expect the unexpected! No part of this drum set goes to waste!
Then Texas Special at their finest. We had a great time drunkenly playing the bongos along with them!
They put on a helluva show!
Then the best part: the jam at the end! I always love an impromptu jam, and these guys looked like they were having so much fun! Everyone enjoyed the hell out of it!
Also, special thanks to Scotty for letting us mess up his bar once again! You rock!
