Reggae Legend Clinton Fearon to Perform in San Antonio

CLINTON FEARON
Renowned Reggae Artist Clinton Fearon
Performing In San Antonio

San Antonio, Texas, Oct. 17, 2006 Internationally renowned reggae singer/songwriter/musician Clinton Fearon will be appearing at Sam's Burger Joint (330 E. Grayson, San Antonio) on Friday, November 10. Tickets for the concert are $6 and $8 (under 21). Advance tickets are available online at http://www.brownpapertickets.com or by calling 1-800-838-3006. Doors open at 7:00 PM, and music starts at 7:30 PM with a set by San Antonio's newest ska band, A New Low. Immediately following, three more local favorites (Time Of The Month, Royal Kustoms, and Uptown Creepers) will continue to entertain with their energetic style of ska. The soulful reggae artist from Senegal, Meta Diya, will take the stage at 11:00 with the all-star backing band Lonestar Rockers. Clinton Fearon will close the show with a long set of energetic, rock steady, hard driving and danceable rhythms, positive lyrics, and the spiritual message of roots reggae music.

Clinton Fearon at Sams Burger Joint

Coming from a rich musical history, Clinton Fearon hails from deep in the hills of St. Catherine, Jamaica. As a youth, he went to Kingston in the early 1970s and, for over 18 years, he was the well known bassist, vocalist, and lyricist for famed reggae performers The Gladiators. Fearon was a house musician for Coxsonne Dodd's Studio One and Lee "Scratch" Perry's Black Ark Studio, and composed many lasting bass lines for Yabby You, Jimmy Riley, Max Romeo, Junior Byles and many others. Upon relocating to the United States, Fearon co-founded the popular reggae group, The Defenders. Fearon wrote the lyrics and sang lead vocals on The Defenders' EP, Chant Down Babylon/Rock Your Bones; the effort reached #14 on The Reggae Route Top 20 (CMJ New Music Report, 1989) and on radio and magazine charts around the country.

With international credits including "Roast Fish and Cornbread" (Black Ark Studio, produced by Lee "Scratch" Perry) and "Chatty Chatty Mouth" (produced by Prince Tony on the album Trenchtown Mix Up and later released on Taboul's Back to Roots), Fearon released his first compilation of original songs, Feel the Spirit, in 1990. In 1994, Disturb The Devil, a collection of 13 songs written and produced by Fearon, quickly received critical acclaim around the globe.

Mystic Whisper was released in early 1997 (Peacemaker Records) and was immediately voted the Number One Release by Reggae Vibes/CRM Radio 102.7 FM (in cooperation with RUNNetherlands) and selected #2 Independent U.S. Release by the prestigious international music magazine, Reggae Report.

Pure Clinton Fearon roots reggae, Mystic Whisper once again proved Fearon's versatility as he delivered a variety of themes in the sweet style that has become his signature. What A System, mixed by renowned Jamaican engineer, Scientist, was released in June 1999. A double CD with a full disc of dub, it garnered four star reviews worldwide and was voted #3 New Album of the Year by Full Watts magazine. Soon Come was released in May 2002 and was quickly named Album of the Month in September 2002 by French reggae publication, Ragga. (Both What A System and Soon Come are on Kool Yu Foot label.) In 2004 came the release of the Live At Reggae Bash DVD (Sankofa Blackstar), a live performance from Lyon, France, capturing Clinton's charismatic and powerful live show. That same year saw the release of the highly acclaimed Give And Take (Kool Yu Foot). Mi And Mi Guitar (Kool Yu Foot), released in 2005, is Clinton's brilliant acoustic collection. It demonstrated that Clinton's spirit and songwriting skills could stand tall all alone (just "mi and mi guitar"). Both Give And Take and Mi And Mi Guitar received rave reviews, including two from Beat Magazine's Ted Boothroyd, who named Give And Take the number one reassurance of reggae's revitalization and reinvention. He also compared Fearon's artistry in Mi And Mi Guitar to Picasso's. November 2006 will bring the release of Vision (Kool Yu Foot). With every one of Fearon's releases seemingly better than the last, Vision promises to be a true classic.

Clinton Fearon is counted among Jamaica's most talented musicians by peers and professionals in the reggae music industry. His infectious bass riffs lead the way; whether playing bass or guitar or percussion, singing lead vocals or providing background harmonies, Fearon has earned his reputation as the "backbone" of The Gladiators. What he has already accomplished and what he continues to create is so significant that, unlike many band members who have been a part of a famous group, Clinton Fearon's musical contributions are sure to live on.

Musica Sin Fronteras

Musica Sin Fronteras: For a More Human Border, Featuring Kinky, October 27

San Antonio, TX/ Sunken Garden Theater— Icoco Productions announces that Kin-Kon Indy Label Mexican recording artist Kinky will headline Musica Sin Fronteras at Sunken Gardens on October 27. The festival is a contemporary reflection and celebration of the common heritage between Hispanic and North American cultures, and in particular, it represents a call for a MORE HUMANE BORDER, during this turbulent time of immigration reform law debate.

MSF brings together seven performing artists from Mexico and the US to promote cultural exposure and understanding through the universal language and discovery of music. Enjoying a set along side the rock-electronica-Latin rhythm-freestyle beats of Kinky are San Antonio’s own spanglish mixologists, Bombasta, playing their special brand of cumbia-reggae-funk, and Monterrey recording artists Nina (rock-pop), Album (progressive-indy), She’s a Tease (indy), Kurkova (electronic experimental), Mario & Camaron (latin-folk), and Dendron (electronica). The event also features food, beverage, and merchandise vendors as well as DJ’s and graffiti and spoken word artists.

This common stream of music across borders amplifies a non-partisan call for humane solutions to the current immigration debate. Musica Sin Fronteras sounds off against any legislation to build physical barriers between countries. It resonates against making it illegal to supply human beings with the bare necessities of survival. MSF is a musical celebration of diversity that drowns out the radical voices in this debate calling for a “purer” America. Now is the time to turn the microphone away from any solution founded in or supported by racism.

Musica Sin Fronteras is not organized to endorse any specific political agenda. It is not looking for would-be revolutionaries and radicals to incite further violence and division. Musica Sin Fronteras is a direct way to encourage discussion and dialogue between groups and does not support any agenda that seeks to further divide people. Music is about opening up and embracing, about taking in new things and, yes, about having a good time even in the face of adversity.

OK, I'm Back - Pretty Much

Ok, I am definitely a product of the Age of Electronics. I had no idea what to do with myself all week without my computer. I had to (gulp)....watch TV! I watched all of the second season and half of the third season of Monk. Thanks to Tony Shalhoub for helping me make it through the puterless nights!

Seriously, how do people live without a computer? I had to get the weather from the newspaper! When I wondered about something, I couldn't go look it up on Wikipedia. I had to...just keep wondering. I had to call people on the telephone! It's ok, I made it through.

So, I got my computer back from the Nerdz today. New hard drive...again. And of course, I didn't learn my lesson from last time, and didn't back anything up. And they were unable to retrieve any files from the old drive. So I've lost all my photos again. And the flash files for the jukebox. I have to re-install all my software and hunt down the software that was downloaded from the net. So it will be at least another day or two before I'm really back in business. So bear with me.

WARNING: IRRELEVANT RANT: I spent last weekend camped out at the Texas Renaissance Festival. I took about 240 photos at the Festival, plus several videos at The Fire at the campgrounds of fire-twirlers and fire-breathers. Got back Sunday, downloaded them all from my camera, erased them from my camera, spent 3 hours cropping and resizing them. I still had some more work to do on them, so I didn't put any on the Internet yet. Then Monday, my 'puter suddenly fried, completely out of the blue. Or maybe I should say into the blue...that dreaded blue screen. So that's all gone. Including quite a few pics of local band E Muzeki, who played at the Festival...so it's a little relevant to this blog, I guess. All gone.

ANOTHER WARNING: FOR TECHIES ONLY: In case any computer tech type people are reading and would like to offer me advice on this, check it out. I think the data on my old hard drive might be retrievable. Here's why. Monday, the Nerdz guy came over. No matter what he tried, he couldn't access my hard drive (a SATA 160 gig). Finally, he took it out and put in an IDE drive. The computer booted up fine. When he tried to hook up my SATA to the IDE, the computer wouldn't boot, even when he took the SATA out of the boot sequence in the BIOS. Any attempt at reading the SATA caused a freeze. So he took the IDE and the SATA off, and hooked up a new SATA drive. The computer wouldn't read that one either. Doesn't that sound like a problem with the computer READING the SATA drives and not a problem with the drive itself? At the Nerdz HQ, they couldn't get it to work with a SATA, and had to do a "work around" and install an IDE drive instead to get it to work. So, Q for the techies: is my only option at trying to retrieve data from my old SATA drive paying a fortune to one of these data retrieval services? Any ideas?

ONE MORE WARNING: I MAY CUSS A LITTLE HERE: DELL sucks ass. I am never buying another damn computer from DELL. This computer is only a year and a half old and this is the second time I've had to replace the fucking hard drive. I've had all week to reflect on the wisdom of buying technology from a business that only provides a one-year guarantee on their product, unless you pay a damn fortune for an extended service agreement. If their products were truly high-quality, they should feel confident in guaranteeing them for more than one year.

Anyway, to recap...I'm mostly back. Bear with me. I'm bummed and out about $450 and lots of pics. And Dell sucks.

The Sons of Sancho & St. James Infirmary

Last week I made my way out to a club I'd never been to before, The Venue, for another night of great local music. St. James Infirmary, a soul/rock/blues quartet from San Antonio, was a band whose songs I liked on their My Space page but never had the chance to check them out in person. We'd written back and forth for a while, so once I realized that they were playing on one of my nights off, I made plans to see what they were about.

Also playing that night were The Sons of Sancho, a highly energetic alternative funk rock combo whose attitude and ideas started with the some of the members' former band, El Sancho. Since the name change, they have been working hard to gain back any lost momentum; The Sons of Sancho are now playing shows, selling their first CD, and are available by request at KSYM 90.1FM (Monday through Friday, from 7pm to 1am).

The Venue is loacted at 800 Lexington Avenue and is easy to find. All you have to do is drive south on San Pedro until a block or two before the I-35 overpass. Turning east on Euclid and completing a small zigzag of roads, keep going until you reach the stop light at the Euclid/Lexington intersection. The Venue should be past the light to your immediate left with parking across the street from the face of the club behind a chain link fence. And here's a helpful hint: with all the nighttime construction along Loop 410, Hwy 281 and who-knows-where-else, I highly recommend that you leave early for those rock shows as you may need that time for the slow-moving vehicles as well as the rerouting and redirection of traffic that tends to send you zipping in the opposite direction of where you want to go.

Once inside, I was impressed with the club's almost-upscale atmosphere. There's a display of serious art across the walls (a huge abstract painting hangs from behind the stage) as well as matching stools and tables, a modest aluminum lighting rig and air conditioning, the latter not essential for the pleasantest rock club experience but still nice nonetheless. On opposite ends of the floor in front of the stage, there are two smaller upstairs areas where you see the action from above—It looks like these were closed but I had a seat at the bar just the same.

The Sons of Sancho

The singer for The Sons of Sancho introduced the third or fourth song of their set by calling it "very dig-able" which I think speaks volumes about the accessibility of their unique sound. Equal parts funk, punk, with a touch of Latin here and a dash of reggae here, The Sons of Sancho toss in the proverbial kitchen sink when it comes to styles and influences. Not that these guys are rudderless and without direction. What you get is a high-energy rock show with the band ebbing and flowing between the reggae-tinged "Crazy" to the Chili Peppers-influenced funk rock of "Television." The singer was the one to watch as he certainly had a stage presence that multiplied his stature. He was very friendly and talkative with the crowd and even invited a friend who was celebrating a birthday to the stage so everyone could sing "Happy Birthday." However, once the band would kick in and the music was playing, he would just explode with energy, prowling the stage this way and that and would expressively use his arms and eyes to help get the point of his lyrics across. An impromptu sit-and-strum set gave the rythm section a rest as the singer and guitarist covered Bob Marley and Weezer among others.

St. James Infirmary

St. James Infirmary wrapped up the evening with their high-energy mix of blues rock, R&B, and Soul (What Country Joe used to call "Rock and Soul Music"). The perfect example of the St. James Infirmary style would have been the infectious original "Ferryboat Man" which mixed the pump pump pump of Jaime's keyboard organ with the flourishes of J.J.'s blues licks on guitar. Bringing it up from the bottom, bassist James and drummer Alex rooted everything with a heavy rock beat. Other songs that received similar treatment included their covers of "Hold On! I'm Comin'," "Come Together," and "Texas Flood." It was a set that was heavy on the covers, but from what the band has been posting on their My Space page, more originals will be at the ready by the time they play their next shows.

The crowd had begun to disperse as 1AM had come and gone, but the band took it in stride and still gave it their all until set's end. And that's what I like about these guys: They have a lot of heart and everyone really pulls their weight to stamp each song with the St. James Infirmary sound—the band calls it "New Blues" and I couldn't agree with them more. With some more time, exposure, and luck, I believe St. James Infirmary is really going to make a name for themselves in the local rock and blues scenes.

Out of Commission

Well, something's wrong with my computer. I'm on somebody else's for a few minutes to write this. Had one of the Nerdz come over and mess with it for a couple of hours ($155), but he couldn't fix it. He took it back to Nerd Headquarters for diagnostics or whatever, so I'm out of commission for a day or two, I guess.

Kel, I was gonna call you, but of course, your number is in my computer, so I don't have it.

See you guys in a couple days.

Sorry,
Rowan

Don’t forget, this Saturday (10/14) we are at what is becoming our home away from home, the Broadway 5050.

See you there!!!!

Matchbox Twenty's Adam Gaynor Takes On Electric Crush

from the Electric Crush newsletter:

Former Matchbox Twenty guitarist Adam Gaynor has signed on to be the new co-manager and producer for the rock band Electric Crush. Adam will be co- managing with current manager / producer Keith Michael Chester of Crop Circle Records, and will be working with the band at an undisclosed recording studio in Los Angeles this Fall.

The San Antonio five piece Modern Rock band is credited with a sound reminiscent of Gaynor’s former band and is often compared to such acts as Stone Temple Pilots, Maroon 5, Lifehouse and the Goo Goo Dolls.

Of meeting the band, Gaynor was quoted as saying; “They were playing the second stage at Sturgis, so I grabbed my camera crew and told them we should film them. They blew us away! They put them on the radio, I interviewed them and that was that. I wanted to hear more, took their CD, listened, and kept in touch with the possibility of doing future work together. The future came much faster than I thought”.

“My director of photography at Sturgis, Tristan Barnard, is shooting an unofficial 40th anniversary Star Trek movie called ‘Of Gods and Men’ (you can see trailer on www.STARTREKOFGODSANDMEN.com, so he asked if he could contact the guys to use one of their songs for a music video in the movie. I said they would be thrilled. Tristan said they were filming the video in LA and asked if I would co-direct it. I said yes, and away we went. The band showed up in their RV, and basically dropped the bomb that they were staying to work with me for a month. I was like "Maybe you could have called first?"

This has meant relocating Electric Crush to L.A. “Now they are getting some apartments, bunkering in and we begin sifting through new and old material, rehearsing and writing and basically putting this all together to conquer Earth together”.

As producer of the band, Gaynor says “We are setting up writing camps for the band members to work and write with each other and production time to go through material and figure out how to package and put this all together. They have some really nice material to this point and being in a band that was so song driven, I am stressing to them to reach for the best possible material they can create. They are writing more as we speak, so part of my job is to filter ideas with them and create the strongest package possible to present them to Planet Earth in a way I hope will be both exciting and memorable. Please stand by”.

Johnny Drama: SA Vibe Party Friday

That's right, a party with Johnny Drama and you is the best therapy!! So you boys and girls better get ready for one huge party this coming Friday. Before that, let me tell you about last weeks party. It was off the hook, as we did our thing over at SOHO Lounge for the HOT SPOTS OF SAN ANTONIO Party. There were so many people there and everyone was having a great time. There were plenty of lovely ladies that signed up to be a part of the SA HOTTIES TEAM as well. Those of you who missed it really don't know what the heck you're doing by not coming out with us. We want to thank Rick and Dave from HotSpotsOfSanAntonio.com for putting this thing together and asking us to provide the entertainment. I invite you all to check out their pics by clicking the Hot Spots link above. You can also check out OUR pics by going to the JD website:

www.SADRAMA.com

Now this coming Friday is going to be even bigger and crazier!! It's time for the SA VIBE party @ SKY LOUNGE. These guys are some crazy folks that know who to throw a party. some of you might have already been to some events sponsored by them at places like Mystique Ultra Lounge, Antro, Planeta Bar~Rio, H2O, Dolce and Dusk. Now they're wanting to get into the live music scene with the likes of the crazy guys in JOHNNY DRAMA. We've been talking to these guys for a few weeks now and have finally sealed the deal to play for their party at SKY LOUNGE this coming Friday night.

They are pulling out all the stops for this one so you really need to be there. The whole SA VIBE crew will be there along with the SA VIBE MODELS. Speaking of which, they are going to start signing up ladies to be SA VIBE MODELS for the coming year. You ladies need to be there and sign up, this outfit is first class. Check out their site by clicking here: SA VIBE. There's going to be great drinks, giveaways, models, fantastic music and FABULOUS PEOPLE...that's you!!! So we'll see you there.

If in case you can't make it out to the HUMONGOUS party Friday night then you can come and hang with us at THE FALLS on Saturday night. By no means is this going to be less of a show because you all have seen what's been going on at The Falls every time we play. So I advise you to get there by 11:00PM so you don't have to wait in line. This place has been great to us and we have been having some awesome shows there as well. So there you go....what a weekend this is going to be!!

ALTER EGO gets rowdy at Hooligan's; rips up Roxy's

We're at two of our favorite places this weekend, and it looks like we'll be back at an old favorite soon. Last Saturday's show at Billy D's was a lot of fun, and the bargave us a glowing recommendation, so we should be back at this cool Northeast club soon!

Alter Ego at Hooligans I35

On Friday, Oct. 6, we head back to the NW Side to jam out at Hooligan's, located next to the Live Oak Cinema, just off I-35 and Loop 1604. the service is friendly, the food is great, there's plenty to see and do, and the music begins at 9:30 p.m. No cover!

Alter Ego at Roxy Sports Bar

On Saturday, Oct. 7, it's once again time to rock at Roxy's, 3249 Wurzbach, right across from the Ingram Park Mall. This is a place that takes great cre of its customers and bands, and always makes for a great show for us. There's no cover and music begins at 9:30 p.m.

... and tell the bass player he's OLD! He just turned 50 on Wednesday, but he tries not to act like it! Keep up with the band on www.thebandalterego.com or www.myspace.com/thebandalterego.
