Drama at Sky Lounge
from the Johnny Drama newsletter:
Can you believe that another year is just about to pass us by? Tomorrow we bring in December and with it all the celebrations that will be taking place. With all the festivities that are being planned, we have decided to keep this month a little light for us. Now we might add a show here and there but for the most part we're going to try and relax and spend some time with our families. That being said we want to make sure that you do come out and hang with us at the shows we do play in December.
That starts with tomorrow night. This is our only show this weekend so please bring all your friends as we pack Sky Lounge @ 5500 Babcock. It's going to also be our last time there for a couple of months as the rotation begins to change up there. So help us make it a great success. There's a common misconception that Sky Lounge is only a certain format. I'm here to tell you that Friday nights are live music nights @ SKY LOUNGE and we'll be there tomorrow night. We really hope to see you there.

This past weekend we had two great shows back-to-back. First, we were at Broadway Bar for the first time and that was awesome. Saturday night we were at SOHO Lounge and that place was packed to the gills. There were birthday parties galore and of course all our friends were there as well. We really do appreciate all your support that you give us. Special thanks to the birthday girls (and guy) Tracy, Yvonne, Carla, Lauren and Pete. Cindy...you're such a flake :) Yeah I'm talking to you as you drink your STARBUCKS coffee. J/K. By the way, the pictures from last week are not up because JJ and I have spent this week getting ready for a big meeting that we're having today. Please cross your fingers and hope that all goes well because if this happens...it's going to be a great step forward for Johnny Drama.
Hey folks, wanted to let you all know of two very special events for Johnny Drama coming up in December @ Wise Guys.
1) Saturday, December 9th - Johnny Drama 1 Year Anniversary Show!!
2) Sunday, December 31st - 2nd Annual WISE GUYS/JOHNNY DRAMA New Years Eve Bash!!
That's right, we're turning one year old next week and we want all of you out there for that. Also, the new Years Eve Bash is going to be even better than last years and I will have more details for you next week on table reservations and so on. Please make your plans now to be with us next Saturday as we celebrate our one year anniversary. Thank you so much to all of you.

First Friday with Merge
from the Merge newsletter:
MERGE would like to wish everyone a belated Happy Thanksgiving. We apologize for this being a WEEK LATE! We took the weekend off to spend time with our families remembering everything we have to be thankful for. Well…we ate a lot of Turkey too.
This weekend it’s back to the grind for MERGE. Friday night (12/1) we will be at Hemisfare Park as part of an extension of first Friday. We’ll be playing two 45 minute sets from 9-11 and this will also be the debut of our new bass player Todd. It’s gonna be chilly so grab your coat, a blanket, (pssst…a flask ), and a warm body to snuggle up next to. We’re TOTALLY excited to have Todd joining the band so come on out and show Todd the love MERGE-style.
Saturday (12/2) we kick it up on the river at Club Rive. The crew at Club Rive has graciously booked us for 3 dates in December. This weekend will be the warm up for our back to back New Year’s eve weekend gigs on 12/30 and 12/31. It’s always a party at the Rive.

Scottie's Birthday: 4-Fifteen at Revolution Room
Friends,
Please come celebrate my birthday at Revolution Room on Broadway just inside Loop 410, Wednesday Night the 29th at 10pm!!! Awesome drink specials and music provided by the band that rocked out the Margarita Pour-Off, yours truly... 4-Fifteen! We are gonna have one helluva night with cameo appearances scheduled tentatively by Nathan from PapaWood, and possibly Cesar from Johnny Drama (if he ever answers his phone) so I can get my drink on too, it's my birthday after all! I also heard a rumor that the gal runnin' the place that night is HOT!!!
(Maggie does that get us a little extra $$$ at the end of the night?)

I do want to take this opportunity to thank all the people who follow 4-Fifteen around town, and the folks that make it whenever they can, you guys make what we do an awesome experience every time. We are truly grateful for all the continuing support you guys give us, and also to Rowan at SAROCKS.com for this site, which gives us an easy and effective way to get the word out. Rowan ROCKS!!!!
On a personal note, thanks to everyone who is supporting my original music with Mantle of the Machine, a recording project with former Article of Control guitarist Eric Tannery, and to all who have embraced "Just Go Away" and all that the song means to me. We have auditioned and selected our band, and we'll be out around town soon.
Thanks to my fellow members of 4-Fifteen for learning "Just Go Away" and allowing me to perform it with my new brothers, you guys ROCK!!!
Keep your eyes on MantleOfTheMachine.com for updates, the CD is almost done!!!
And make sure you stay glued to 4FifteenLive.com, it's ALL BRAND NEW and we're booked solid baby!
Life is good, thanks to everyone who makes it that way!

The band will follow up with a national 42-city tour in Spring/Summer 2007 and is negotiating with some of the best retail distribution companies to further carry the new release.
We Watched the Headlights, We Watched the Stars was produced by ex-Dwight Yoakam sideman/producer Pete Anderson along with industry veterans Tony Rambo (The Vines, The Donnas, Nikka Costa), and Sally Browder (Wayne Kramer, the Eyeliners). Headlights has been met with a considerable amount of critical acclaim, being described as "a little like the Replacements, a little like the Gin Blossoms, and a lot of their own unique take on things" (ABOUT.com) - "tightly delivered with lots of swagger, attitude, and nice three- and four-part harmonies" (Greenman Review) - "a slick blend of catchy hooks evoking their alt-country influences including Ryan Adams and the Refreshments" - (El Paso Times).
More information on the upcoming Archer Avenue tour and album is available at www.archeravenuemusic.com.

Thanks to Anonymous
I would like to extend a big THANK YOU to a person who was kind enough to help support SA Rocks, but wished to remain anonymous. This person is not a musician and does not live in San Antonio (anymore), but enjoys the site and wanted to help out. I thought that was wonderful and amazing. Thank you very, very much, Anonymous!! You may not be a musician, but YOU ROCK!!!
Turkey, Dressing and Exit 314
The in-laws are coming, the bird is thawing, the kids are out of school and bouncing off the walls. But relief is on the way! As a public service, Exit 314 will crank up the blues, roots and roadhouse rock just in time to keep you from using those turkey carving tools in unpleasant ways on your relatives.
Here's the scoop:
When: Saturday, Nov. 25, 8 pm

Merge at Broadway 5050 Saturday
from the Merge newsletter:
Greetings from Hawaii where MERGE is kickin’ it Aloha style on our Mookielakatiki Helloyawannalayme tour. Last night MERGE narrowly avoided tragedy as the pyrotechnics got a little out of hand and set John’s grass skirt on fire. Luckily Michelle had just enough Red Bull left to douse him and put out the flames.
But!...Not to worry. The show continues as the tour bus rolls out of Hawaii and back into San Antonio this weekend. This Saturday (11/18), MERGE will be rocking out our home away from home, The Broadway 5050. Come join us and we’ll tell you all about our trip….especially the story of how Jonathan “accidentally” found himself on the nude beach. ;)
They say November and December are the busy months for bands. MERGE is no exception when it comes to this. We’ve added two additional dates to our calendar in December. Check it out at www.mergerocks.com. We also have a link to our myspace page there and will be soon be adding links to individual band member’s myspace pages.
Peace and Hair Grease!

Dead Ringer at Firehouse Friday
What's up killer cats! This Friday the Ringerz will be at the Firehouse Pub and Grill on Walzem and if you've never been, it's a really cool place. It reminds me of the old Chelsea's Night Pub (am I dating myself?) where you can eat, drink, and rock. Good times mang. Go to http://www.deadringerzone.com for maps and stuff.
Peace and fleece.

The 321 Max is in Joe and Paul's favorite old swingers bar out near Perrin Beitel at 2818 N.E. Loop 410. The one that used to have the Roman motif.

Patrice Pike at Sam's
from a member of Patrice Pike's street team:
Patrice Pike is playing at Sam's Burger Joint on Dec. 8th at 8pm, and Ginger Leigh is opening for her. It's going to be one hell of a rockin' night here in SA. Her new album "Unraveling" came out last month after 2 years in the making and it's awesome! It would have been out sooner, but as you might know, she was on "Rockstar/Supernova" this summer and kicked some serious ass!!!!

The Future of SA Rocks
One of my favorite songs from the band Triumph has always been “Lay it on the Line.” And that’s what I’m gonna do. Lay it on the line.
When I first started this blog, it was to give myself something to do late at night when I couldn’t sleep. I figured, I love music, I like to write, this will be fun for me. And it is.
Whether or not people would find it interesting or informative was actually secondary. I kinda hoped a few people would, but it was more of a cathartic thing for me. I was unprepared for the feedback I received. Many e-mails to the effect that this sort of site was something that San Antonio needed and that it provided a valuable service, etc. MANY emails thanking me for what I do, which I still receive in abundance. I find it very gratifying that something I love to do is also something which people enjoy and find useful and needed.
After realizing that the SA Rocks Blog was quickly gaining in popularity, I decided to devote more time to it, and quit my paying job, which was doing web design for a ticket broker. I had been working at this job for many years and was getting burnt out on it. I decided to invest a little money in SA Rocks, not a lot, but enough to pay for some web space to host free classifieds, the “jukebox” where people could experience San Antonio music, a forum where musicians and music fans could get together and talk about local music, etc., all the things that are now on sarocks.com. I thought I could recoup my investment. I wanted the site to remain free in all areas, and I didn’t want to sell advertising, but I thought that if people really thought this site was a useful and needed thing here in SA, they would be willing to support it through sponsorship. Not trying to make a killing, but just hoping to make enough to at least cover what I spent, I made the sponsorship packages ridiculously cheap as far as advertising prices go.
And I did receive some support. But nowhere near enough to cover the expenses of maintaining a website, going out to review concerts and the time and effort that I have spent on this site. Up until now, I have sustained the loss because I love doing this.
However, some things have changed, and I wanted to let everyone know that the future of SA Rocks at this point is uncertain.
I try not to discuss my personal life much on here, but let’s just say that I have recently had a slew of extra expenses and have suddenly lost my only source of personal income. A few of you have met my boyfriend Scott. Not many know this, but he is really the invisible backer of SA Rocks. This man works his ass off and lets me do this because he knows I love doing it. Most of the financial burden falls on him and he never complains. We have 4 children and he figures that my being home to take care of our kids is the important thing, and understands that I need something else, something of my own, to do to keep me sane.
However, with the recent extra expenses and the loss of my “spending money,” I cannot reasonably expect him to shoulder the cost of SA Rocks that I was covering, with no return on the investment. I have not had a new sponsor in months. An attempt at trying to garner some corporate sponsorships has gone nowhere so far. It seems that, while many bands and bars are eager to advertise their events on SA Rocks, very few are willing to shell out a little cash to help keep it going. And my financial situation has hindered my ability to go out and review local concerts, which has meant a decrease in readership, which makes it harder for me to convince businesses to sponsor this effort.
This is not a plea for money. I just want everyone to understand that right now things might fall behind. I am not updating as often as usual and I haven’t been out to attend many events lately because I have had to cut back on the time and money I invest in this site for practical reasons. I am hoping to find a way to keep the site going because I enjoy doing it and because people enjoy the site and find it useful. So please bear with me while I try to figure out a way to keep SA Rocks alive.

Electric Ocean

Better late than never!
JCM and I headed out to see Electric Ocean at Paparay's Sportsbar last month, a band who have actually been around for some time (winners of the 12/30/04 battle of the bands in San Antonio).
I didn't have any expectations at all, other than knowing that the band have 5 members who are all very diverse in their playing and influences.
Ben, the band's lead singer and rhythm guitarist, quotes some of these as being his faves:
Judas Priest, Queensryche, Foo Fighters, Marillion, The Church, 80's, Velvet Revolver, Saxxon, Lynch Mob...anything with Randy Rhoads or George Lynch influences, Anthrax, Metal Church and many others.
I also have to admit I LOVE a killer light show, and was looking forward to that as well as NOT knowing what to "expect".
Electric Ocean was last on the bill, and I was barely hanging onto awareness at this time, but I really started to wake up once I saw the equipment and band members setting up.
I had a feeling these guys were going to be different than a lot of bands I've seen, from the age differences, styles, and personalities I was meeting.
When the club lights kicked off, immediately there was a feeling of ambience and curiosity with keyboardist Dave producing some haunting intros, and Bic (quite a young bass player) with MUCHO energy, a lot of precision, coming up and off the stage, which is always cool!
Ben has a very steady and confident voice and carries his band quite well, and I can't say enough about Nelson on lead guitars!
They aren't kidding when they say this guy sincerely shreds...
The drummer Brian was explosive from their very first song, and everything came together so tight and full.
I found myself front and center (sideways and upside down), very impressed with every one of them.
Electric Ocean are one of those bands that it's hard to focus on just one musician as they're all totally entertaining and the songs very unpredictable.
"Bone of Contention" and "Keep You In My Pocket" were two of my fave songs.
I can't say enough about their sound, production, and arrangement of their show; at times I felt like I was at a concert venue.
Electric Ocean are in the process of finishing their CD, and I would definitely recommend checking them out wherever their next gig may happen.
I'd love to see them at Club Kristal, but again, they put on a hell of a show anywhere.
Their line up includes:
Ben-Lead vocals, Rhythm Guitar
Nelson Broyal- Lead Guitar
Bic Meshew - Bassist
Brian Sands - Drums
Dave Loyola - Keyboards
Hollywood Bill- Production coordinator, lights, & special effects

Merge at Broadway 5050
If you missed Friday’s gig at Club Rive, you missed one heck of a show. It even included a marriage proposal or two. Okay so it was the drunk tourist in front of the stage proposing to Michelle and quite honestly…the rest of the band.
Don't forget, you can find out all things MERGE at www.mergerocks.com. There you can find out our schedule, see pics from our shows including the party people, and even hear our demo so you can recommend us for your private parties, weddings, etc..... There is also a link to our myspace page. Jonathan has put a TON of work into this project so check it out.
For the next two Saturdays (11/11 and 11/18) MERGE will be kicking it up at our home away from home, the Broadway 5050. Be sure to come out and join us because it’s ALWAYS a party at the 5050. The staff are awesome, the food is amazing, and we hear the entertainment ain’t that bad either. Plus, the more you drink, the more love the 5050 throws our way. So come out, drink up, and DANCE I SAY!!!

Red Sauce Rules The Place on Veteran's Day
from Red Sauce Rules!:
We're back! Come join us next Saturday night and have a blast on Veteran's Day November 11 at "The Place - Spirits Emporium" located on the Northwest side of town at Bandera Rd. and Eckert Rd. The club is under new management and working hard to provide it's customers with the best "classic rock" music this side of Leon Vally.
Of course, Red Sauce Rules! will deliver so pass this email to all your friends and family, print out our flyer and post it at work, come out, bring a veteran along and help us celebrate the day. I understand the bar will have $3 Markers Mark, $2 Tecate and Tecate Light, and other specials that night so don't be square - be there!
We would love to become regulars performers at "The Place" but only YOU can help us make that happen.
Don't forget to catch us on the Northeast side at "The Firehouse Pub & Grill" on Saturday, November 25.

The Lounge Closing?
Just came across this on MySpace, that tonight's show at The Lounge at Avenue B is the last show at The Lounge...that they are closing. This bums me out. I have not been to The Lounge, but I have been wanting to go there. They seem to have had a cool mix of music there. Well, I guess...sorry I didn't get to know ya', Lounge at Ave B...

51 Acres at Rebar Friday
51 ACRES @ REBAR
4311 Broadway (just inside Loop 410)
Friday, November 3rd @ 10pm
NO COVER, Drink Specials!
In other news...
51 ACRES has just had their CD "Thousand Miles Away" reviewed for the first time by the San Antonio Current. The review is a bit...well, we will let you decide. Go pick up a copy of the SA Current or go to:
http://www.sacurrent.com
and look through the music section. Please send the SA Current an email or letter if you would like to express anything at all to them about our review(or lack thereof...) They did say a few good things about us, but the review lacks any real musical analysis, which is unfortunate.
We are super close to getting our entire album on Apple's I-Tunes. It has already been approved and is waiting to be placed on the website by Apple.
Thank you so much,
-51 ACRES-

Up and Coming:
Saturday Nov. 11th @ Dirty Dog Bar, Austin TX, 6th St.
Thursday Nov. 16th @ Club Kristal w/ Structure
NOTE FROM ROWAN: The title of the review is "How to Tell If You're a Damn Bro" - I had to search for "51 Acres" to find it online. This should take you to it. IMO, sounds like the reviewer was too lazy to give an in-depth analysis of the album, so instead coughed up this silly quiz, the main point of which seems to be that jam bands are better live. This is probably true, but that doesn't mean that it isn't nice to take a little piece of the band home with you. Also odd that the max total possible for the quiz is 30 points, but the analysis at the end has a category for 30-35 points. But hey, if you can score 35 points on this quiz, I'd say you're probably a cool person to hang with!
