Gabba Gabba Sabba, Hey!

Gabba Gabba Sabba - the guys from Pitbull Daycare playing Ramones and Sabbath tunes - intriguing. I’ve been wanting to get out and check this out. So when I found out they were playing at Club Kristal (always Sneakers to me), I had to go. So I headed up to Kristal last night to check ‘em out.

Just as with the Seether concert, the first person I ran into was the guy from Structure out in the parking lot passing out flyers. Those guys work so hard! So here it is:

Structure Album Flyer

Big surprise when I got in there - Brian Kendall back in his old Sneakers DJ booth spinning out the rock-n-roll just like old times (well, with a much diminished selection according to him, but still cool). Great to see him up there!

I caught the tail end of Pillcrusher, but it’s hard to judge a band from hearing 2 songs. So all I can really say is those 2 songs had kind of slow dark heavy melodies and the singer has one of those deep guttural death metal voices...oh, and he’s funny!

Then some Prong, Korn, Autograph, Metallica, Rob Zombie, The Cult, Static-X and Green Day from Brian.

Gabba Gabba SabbaGabba Gabba Sabba Singer

Then Gabba Gabba Sabba! They kicked it off with Black Sabbath’s “Warpigs” and I was instantly impressed. They sounded awesome! I don’t know their names except the bass player’s name was Donnie cuz it was his birthday...he even got a cake up there (not to mention several shots)! Anyway, the singing was right on. The singer didn’t sound or try to sound like Ozzy or Joey Ramone, but did the songs with his own style, and it all sounded great! All of them sounded great, and I was especially impressed with the guitarist. Very clean! (I mean his playing, not his personal hygiene, although I’m sure that was fine, too!)

Gabba Gabba SabbaGabba Gabba Sabba Guitarist

Anyhow, Blitzkrieg Bop, Rock ‘n Roll High School, Fairies Wear Boots, Havana Affair and more...where else are you likely to hear these songs played together?! Then, they seemed to be finishing up...with, oddly enough, “Snorting Whiskey and Drinking Cocaine” (isn’t that by Pat Travers?). But, I guess because the 3rd band that was supposed to play, Tension Speak, didn’t show up (evidently one of their members had a transportation problem), they extended their set...with some help.

Terry AndersonTerry Singing with GGS

Terry Anderson of Lokey got up there and sang “Symptom of the Universe” with them...great job! Then Mikey, previously with Uriel, came up and sang “N.I.B.” and “Sweet Leaf”. Then back to the Ramones and the GGS singer with “I Wanna Live.” Then Mikey again with “Children of the Grave.” It was really cool to see all the musicians working together to keep us entertained. Awesome job on all accounts.

Mikey from UrielMikey Singing with GGS

I ran into my ex-cousin-in-law (or something like that), so I stayed around to see what he’d been up to, had one more beer, listened to Brian spinning some Alice in Chains, Pantera, Marilyn Manson and The Offspring, then headed home. Another great night at Sneakers...um, Kristal. You guys really should get up there when you get a chance. I hear they’re going to start having bands on Thursdays, also, so get out there and support this great new/old club!!

Oh and Happy Birthday, Donnie!

BOMBASTA RETURNS TO SAN ANTONIO

FOR "LA REVOLUCIÓN DEL CORAZÓN"
~Una Noche de Amor y Resistencia~

The unique and moving sounds of Bombasta will be returning to San Antonio on Saturday, February 11th at Saluté International Bar. After a healthy stint playing the clubs in Austin and the very successful event Barrio Massive 3, last month at Sam's Burger Joint, Bombasta is ready to return to their hometown of San Anto and take the stage at local landmark, Saluté International Bar.

Bombasta will host the pre-Valentines show, "La Revolución Del Corazón," and will be spreading love and positivity the only way they know how- on the stage. In classic Bombasta form, the night will be a celebration for lovers and revolutionaries alike, as front man El Robotico put it, "...the show's gonna be for those soul-rebel-lovers who want to come together and get down!"

The night will be festive as Bombasta will be joined by local DJ, Electric Messiah, who will be spinning cumbias, reggaeton and norteñas during the breaks. Other guest artists are also expected to make an appearance, as Bombasta is always open to an impromptu collaboration. In anticipation of Valentine's Day, Bombasta will be extending a discounted entry fee to couples.

Benefit this Sunday at the Hangin' Tree Saloon

The following email was reposted with permission from Carol Sowa of the Texas Music Coalition (TMC)

Dear TMCers,

This call is going out to our TMC membership to please try and make it by the benefit for Smoke Chapman's nephew this coming Sunday, if at all possible. Smoke has given generously of his time and talents to TMC events over the years, and we'd like to show him we support him in trying to aid his young nephew.

Also, ANY additional prize donations folks might care to donate to the benefit would be greatly appreciated. If you have something that you would like to donate to this cause, just bring it by the Hangin' Tree Saloon that day, Sunday, Jan. 29. The prize tables will be set up starting at noon.

Big John's Hangin' Tree Saloon is hosting the benefit from 2 to 7 p.m. for Smoke's nephew, Andrew Rousseau, whose mother (Smoke's sister-in-law) was murdered shortly before Christmas. The boy has medical problems related to diabetes and is greatly in need of assistance.

TMC bands and artists providing country, blues, rock and folk music for this event include Mesquite, Delta Ryde, Jimmy Spacek, Ashley Dixon [no website] and Sean Palen, with Wolfpack[no website] also on the bill.

A silent auction and raffle will take place, with prizes including a Crate 2010 series 100-watt amp and artwork by Elaine Eickenroht. (If you were at the TMC fund-raiser in October, you will have seen a sample of her unique artistry, examples of which were also seen at past Wiley Awards.)

The Hangin' Tree Saloon [map here] is located two miles north of Rolling Oaks Mall off FM 2252 at 18424 2nd St., Bracken, Texas 78266. Take FM 2252 (Nacogdoches Rd.) north, past Rolling Oaks Mall, then take the first right past the railroad tracks, go four blocks and turn left at the bowling alley. It's the second building on the right. For additional information, call The Hangin' Tree at (210) 651-5812 or visit www.hangingtree.com. The Hangin' Tree's famous kitchen will be open during this event for food purchases.

Smoke is a former officer on the TMC board of directors and will be remembered for initiating and heading the TMC Jam for several years.

Thanks for your support of this event!
Carol Sowa

Mingo Fishtrap Opening for Blues Traveler

I just received an update on the Blues Traveler concert coming up February 26th at Sunset Station: local band Mingo Fishtrap will be opening for Blues Traveler! Congrats, guys!

SpitFire at Tiffany Billiards Tonight

SpitFire at Tiffany Billiards

SnoCore: Seether and Shinedown

Went out to Sunset Station last night to check out Seether and Shinedown with the SnoCore tour (missed Flyleaf - again - and Halestorm - too bad, I don’t get to see enough bands with chick singers). As most people who know me are aware of, I don’t listen to the radio much...pretty much only when I’m driving in my car. So, while I was familiar with several songs by each band, I’ve not been a huge fan of either - and I’m getting damn sick of that “Remedy” song - way overplayed.

My point being that I didn’t know whether or not I would really enjoy this show or not. Pleasant surprise, I did! Both bands were heavier in concert than they are on the radio. I blame this on the record companies. I think they coerce bands into toning down the heavy so they will appeal to a larger radio audience. But I’m no expert; this is just my theory.

Anyway, we got there and the first person I saw was the singer from Structure out working it, passing out flyers in the parking lot. And since he went to the trouble, here’s the flyer (not a great scan, sorry). Great band, go check ‘em out.

Structure Flyer

We got in and to the side bar just in time for Shinedown to start. Unfortunately, I didn’t get any pictures of them because I’m a photo pass rookie and it looked like the area behind the barricade was blocked by band equipment and I didn’t know how I was supposed to get back there. It wasn’t until I saw a professional photographer coming out of there that I realized that there was a gap in the equipment to squeeze through. Of course, that was at the end of their 3rd song, and you’re only allowed to take press photos during the first three songs, so I missed my window.

I won’t go into setlist details, etc., because I don’t really know all the names of the songs, although, as I said, I was familiar with several of them (Save Me, 45, Burning Bright, Heroes, etc.). The singer really has a great voice and a lot of stage presence. He was very into talking to the audience, asking their opinions...they ended up playing, I dunno, 6 or 7 encores? Highlights: 1) when they played their cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” in tribute to Dimebag Darrell. That was awesome. 2) When they played a song live for the 1st time and it was (IMO) the best song of their set.

Seether was also good, although they didn’t have the stage presence and audience connection that Shinedown had. I did get a few pics though:

Seether at Sunset Station

Seether with SnoCore

And I ran into Suzi of Suzi’s Rock Page, out there supporting, which was nice.

Highlights: Amy Lee of Evanescence joining them to sing “Broken,” Shaun Morgan doing some flame-shooting with a bottle of something (Everclear?) - some damn impressive distance! and breaking into Pantera’s “Walk” in the middle of a song. Of course I didn’t get any pictures of Amy Lee or the fire thing due to the 1st-three-songs rule. Sorry!

OK NOTE: That was the singer from Halestorm singing the Amy Lee part. I told Staci that if that was Amy Lee, she sure looked different, but she swore it was. That clears that up!

Anyway, great show, pleasant surprise. And Sunset Station, as always, one of the most pleasant of the larger venues in town. Drinks aren’t way overpriced; you can lean on the bar and watch the show if you’re not the type to jump in the moshpit, etc. And good job of drawing a large crowd on a Wednesday with Aerosmith playing in town the same night. I wasn’t sure they could pull it, but they did!

Atomix

An earlier post made it sound like Atomix had closed down. That is not the case. It is no longer being booked or promoted by Ghost Cat Productions. Ghost Cat is now working with Alternative Lounge. Just wanted to clear that up.

Congrats to Sexto Sol

Congratulations to Sexto Sol for getting chosen to open up for Aerosmith last night at the AT&T Center in place of Lenny Kravitz!!

According to Sexto Sol's "blah-g", "the class of San Antonio shined as bright as the stage lights with the reception we received. It was a memorable night for the band...one we wont ever forget."

That's awesome, guys!!

Lesti Huff at Cementville & Scenic Loop Cafe

from Lesti Huff:

Here's what's going on w/ me & the band this week. This Thursday we'll be playing @ Cementville from 8-11. They have excellent food & the band will be playing inside where you can enjoy an urban bistro environment. They're located across from the Quarry Mkt. where the old Lab used to be & their # is (210)828-7232. Hope you can make it out to that one.

On Friday Jim Bard & I will be doing a duo @ the Scenic Loop Cafe from 8-11. They're just outside of S.A. on Boerne Stage Rd. #25615 & their # is (210)687-1818. What can I say but ditto on the food & atmosphere. Once again it's excellent. Jim & I really like good food so we've made a vow to only play @ places that have really great food. You don't need any restaurant reviews just follow the band around & get a taste of Texas!

Johnny Drama: The Place and Hemmingway's

from Johnny Drama:

This past Friday night, we played a great show at THE PLACE. Quickly, this is becoming one of our favorite places to perform at and it seems that everyone always has a great time out there, as you can tell by the pictures which are already up on the website. The Place offers a great atmosphere and a pretty good size dance floor where everyone, sooner or later, ends up having a blast. We will be playing there once a month from now on. It will be either the 2nd or 3rd Friday of each month...I'll let you know for sure once we confirm which one this week. For this, we have to give all of you a great big THANKS for coming out and bringing your friends as well.

This week is free for us, unless we get something last minute, and we're going to use it to add a couple of more songs to the line up. We threw out three new ones this past Friday and have a few more that we're adding for our show next week. That show would be:

Friday, February 3, 2006 @ 9:45 PM
Hemmingway's Tavern
8931 Wurzbach

For those of you who have not been there, it's been re-done on the inside and it looks great. Be sure to get there early because this one is sure to get packed with great crowd and we want all of you to be there. So we'll see you there.

Just a quick note, some of us went to go see our friends, PAPAWOOD, on Saturday night. We had a great time out there guys. Here's to much success.

Rok Candy, The Trap & Papa Ray's

from Rok Candy:

Rok Candy rocked The Trap last night and we wanted to make some comments about the venue. We had such a great time and were received well there. The patrons and the staff were very warm and hospitable. They made us feel so at home, I mean really at home - laid back. It was a very fun night at The Trap and we're hoping we'll get to go back again soon. "The Trap" rocks.

This coming Saturday night, January 28, 2006, we'll be at Papa Ray's on St. Mary's Street. This will be Duke's last performance since he'll be going on military duty to Iraq. We will sorely miss him and pray for a safe and speedy return.

Iris at Legends and The Firehouse

from Iris:

It's almost the weekend so you know what that means! Yes, IRIS will be back on the prowl starting this Friday at Legends Sports Bar. IRIS will be unveiling a couple of new tunes and from what I hear their going to blow everyone away. This is the first time Legends will have the pleasure of hearing San Antonio’s favorite cover band live. This is shaping up to be the mother of all events.

Saturday night IRIS is back at the Firehouse. IRIS hasn't been there in a while but already the IRIS Army has informed this fellow solider that there is going to be a big birthday party for a fellow IRIS solider. The weird part is IRIS had three birthday parties the last time they played the Firehouse. Somehow I get the feeling this birthday party will be one for the memory book...show up and be a part of history!!

After a great weekend up on the Northeast Side of San Antonio, ALTER EGO moves inwards a bit to play a couple of great clubs you need to check out, if you haven't done so already. On FRIDAY, JAN. 20, we'll be at BOOZEHOUNDS, located at 8531 PERRIN-BIETEL, beginning at 9:30 p.m. It's right off Loop 410 and next to the big Lacks Furniture store. Here's a place that really know how to treat its customers and its bands, and features both original and cover bands on a regular basis. And no cover!

On SATURDAY, JAN. 21, beginning at 9:30 p.m., we'll be at MAIN STREET, 13477 WETMORE, just off Thousand Oaks. Cozy and comfortable, the service is great and we've really gotten to enjoy playing this Central SA spot!

On WEDNESDAY, JAN. 25, we been fortunate enough to be asked to play outside the AT&T Center before the Aerosmith/Lenny Kravitz show, in conjunction with KZEP radio. We'll be on a stage near the patio area between the AT&T Center and Freeman Coliseum, so stop on by and say howdy, because I'm sure KZEP will have some goodies to give away!

As always, check the band's website at www.thebandalterego.com or drop a line to thebandalterego@hotmail.com. Thank you for your support!

Jammin with Girl in a Coma

from an article in the Current entitled "Sound and the Fury" by Gilbert Garcia:

"Former San Antonio filmmaker Jim Mendiola...is working on a pilot for Sí TV called Jammin’, a music show that combines slice-of-life cinema verité with performance footage. For the pilot episode of Jammin’, Mendiola chose to focus on local favorites Girl in a Coma. He’ll take his cameras to the band’s Friday, January 20 show at Sam’s Burger Joint (330 E. Grayson), with a bill that also features the Snags, Doom to Bloom, the Offbeats, and Big Soy. Doors open at 8 p.m. and cover is $5.

The following week, Mendiola will catch Girl in a Coma in the act at New York’s Knitting Factory, for what promises to be a highly intriguing set.

New Jukebox

As you may have noticed, I remade the jukebox. I have had five new songs waiting to be added to it for a while now, but with the computer crash, I hadn't had time. Plus I needed to re-download Flash so I could do it. So I did that and went to add the songs, when I realized that only the actual Flash "movie" file was stored on the internet. The editable file was back on my old hard drive. If you don't know anything about Flash, suffice it to say that I had no way of editing the jukebox. So I had to make a whole new one.

Anyway, there are five new bands on the jukebox: Derringer, Right Road Lost, Plague, Ill Fated and Crucible. Also, while I was at it, there are several bands who originally sent me more than one MP3, but the same songs have been on there for months. So I switched those out as well. So, you can listen to some newly added bands as well as some newly added songs by bands who were already on there. Enjoy!

E Muzeki and Some Blues Rock

Here’s how far behind I am...this is a review from LAST Saturday!

I have heard so much about this band, E Muzeki, and how talented they are that I’ve been dying to go check them out. So Saturday Staci and I joined some of my other friends on the patio at Sam’s Burger Joint to hear some E Muzeki. It was the monthly (first Saturday) Renaissance gathering, so there were a lot of people dressed in garb (i.e. period costumes, stuff people might have worn during the Renaissance or in Medieval times). Which was fine by me. I have the highest appreciation for a long-haired man in a kilt. Yummy.

Anyway, on to the music. I feel totally inadequate to describe E Muzeki, because I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to world music. But, in the words of Ben Stein, “I shall do my best.” E Muzeki is a trio that plays a variety of world music, both traditional melodies and original compositions. I was a little disappointed that the band wasn’t livelier - they pretty much just stand (or sit) there and play, faces expressionless, but the music was absolutely captivating.

E Muzeki on the patio at SamsE Muzeki

The most interesting thing to me was their instruments. I had to go to their website for help with this, because I didn’t know what they were all called. If I had to describe them with my limited knowledge, I would have said the girl plays violin, you’ve got a guy on guitar and a mandolin-type thingy and another guy on what looks like a drum kit made out of bongos. But then I would sound stupid. So, Jenny O’Connor plays Celtic fiddle and Gypsy violin, and if it’s ok to say someone shreds on violin, Jenny shreds. Mark Varelas plays guitar and a really cool instrument called a bouzouki, which is similar to a mandolin and has a sharp metallic sound. As for the drums, here’s where I really needed their website: Michael Huebner “contributes the rhythms and texture of exotic drums such as the djembe, darabuka, ashiko, and dumbek configured into a unique hand-drum kit.”

E Muzeki Mark on bouzoukiMark on Bouzouki

During the first set, we were eating (you gotta get a burger when you go to Sam’s, it’s mandatory in my book), so I couldn’t write down what they were playing during that time. I know I heard “Hava Nagila” in there, though. And some Celtic and Gaelic songs. Partway through the second set, I finally got to write stuff down. They played a Greek dance and a Scottish dance; “The Kiss” from The Last of the Mohicans, which is actually a song called “Gael” (I think) with some more added to it; a hillbilly mountain tune, with some great fiddling; and (what I was waiting for) an instrumental adaptation of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” on violin, which was amazing.

E Muzeki Jenny playing KashmirJenny Playing Kashmir

As I said, I am not qualified to describe their music except to say that I loved it. I’ve never been very into world music, but E Muzeki has inspired me to listen to more of it. All this week I’ve been listening to E Muzeki (Staci bought two of their cd’s), as well as other bands like Gypsy Caravan and Tribal Trance and thoroughly enjoying it. It’s also amusing to see the faces of my friends and family when they walk into my room and, instead of Metallica, they hear an Irish jig!

If you would like to experience some E Muzeki, there are 30 clips of their songs on their website at emuzeki.com. You can also catch them at Boardwalk Bistro at 4011 Broadway Friday, January 27th from 7:30-10:30pm, and at Blend on S. Flores Friday, February 3rd from 8:00-11:00pm.

After E Muzeki finished, we went inside Sam’s to hang out with our friends from The Killing Floor, 21BLACK and Amplifyd, who were playing inside that night. Right Road Lost and the Jack Michaels Band also played, but we missed them, except for part of one song of the Jack Michaels Band. Just enough to know that their female singer has a great voice. Definitely I need to go check them out for a full set soon.

The Killing Floor had their old bass player, David, back and they sounded the best I’ve ever heard them sound, which is saying a lot! I especially liked that Larry played the congas with his hands instead of his mallets. I like the sharper sound of hands hitting the drums better than the muffled mallet sound. Great job guys!

The Killing Floor at SamsThe Killing Floor

21BLACK was up next with some more blues rock. I always love to hear some good guitar action and Robert didn’t fail me. Unfortunately, even though I heard several people saying how much they were enjoying the music, Sam’s pretty much emptied out between sets, so there weren’t many people left for 21BLACK. Probably for this reason, the guys didn’t seem as into it as they were when I saw them at Rock City a few months ago. At Rock City, they seemed like they were having a lot of fun with their music, mixing it up, throwing bits of this song and that song in the middle of other songs, laughing a lot, etc. Not so much this time, which was a little disappointing, but understandable.

21BLACK at Sams21BLACK

Last up was Amplifyd and again, they sounded the best I’ve heard them sound. Their set was all originals, which was great and I hope they do this more often. And even though just about all that was left was us and the other bands, they put on a great show, even doing an encore and playing “Rock Steady” upon my request. Thanks guys!

Amplifyd at SamsAmplifyd

Thanks to everyone for all the good jams!

ADDED NOTE: I mentioned that I heard part of one song by the Jack Michaels Band and that the female singer sounded great. Turns out this is what happened...this is from Meagan Tubb: "My name is Meagan Tubb and I was the "female singer" in the above mentioned blog. Interesting story, Jack Michaels is the bass player for my band "Meagan Tubb." He had a show that night with his band that he fronts called "The Jack Michaels Band." Unfortunately, the guitar player was coming down from Austin and broke down right before the show. Jack was like, "How am I going to play this gig now?" I happened to be there to see him play and said, "Well, I could learn your songs," and he said, "No, let's do your songs instead," so it ended up being a very impromptu gig with the drummer who I hadn't even met learning the songs off my CD in the car."

Update from Iris

from Iris:

We hope everyone made it safely through the New Year. IRIS played the Guadalupe River Club on New Years eve and if you missed it then you missed one hell of a party. It was packed to the gills with fans and new fans alike. Check out the photos at http://irisrocks.com/photos/

The highlight of the evening was the marriage proposal from David to his girlfriend (sorry IRIS didn't tell me her name) - she said yes! Another great moment was the rowdy group who had IRIS sign everything from broken drum sticks to...ummm...their bodies :)~.

Last year was a great year for IRIS. They have seen more fans join the IRIS Army and their web-site is getting more hits everyday. The band was so busy last year that each time they ordered a new batch of t-shirts they ran out just as quickly - a sure sign that IRIS is getting noticed.

Now that last year is behind us let us forward to this year...

Tonight IRIS will be at the TRAP which always promises to be loud, crude, with plenty of rock n roll on tap. The Trap is one place that is not afraid to let their hair down and let the drums and amps do the talking. Cindy and Rene always treat IRIS and their fans well.

Saturday IRIS will be at Booze Hounds. It's been a little more than a month since IRIS was there so you know their itching to get back on that stage and tear your head off. The last time IRIS played there the owner had a table full of food for all to partake...yummy.

If school or work has you booked this weekend don't fret IRIS will be back again next weekend at Legends Sports Bar and The Firehouse. For more information check out the "Shows" section:

Barrio Massive in the Current

Check out the great article about Barrio Massive: the collaboration of Sexto Sol and Bombasta in the latest issue of the Current.

Barrio Alliance by Gilbert Garcia

My favorite part:
"For Roberto Livar, the issue was particularly sensitive because when he returned to his hometown of San Antonio three years ago after a stint in Austin, he dedicated himself to bringing solidarity and positivity to the local music scene.

"“Coming back from Austin, I really felt how divisive the whole scene is. There’s a lot of hating going on,” says Livar, frontman for Bombasta. “What I’ve really tried with Barrio Massive is to show the community that two bands can not only do shows and be supportive of each other, but actually work together.”"

ALTER EGO Slams the Northeast Side

from Alter Ego:

After a phenomenal jam-packed show at Roxy’s last week, ALTER EGO heads back up to the Northeast side of town for a pair of gigs at two very cool locations.

First off, THANK YOU for all our friends who came out for the first Friday of the year at Roxy’s. Special thanks to our fellow musicians Wongo and Amanda from Prototype and the lead singer from Roadtrip for hanging out and supporting the scene! There’s a reason Roxy’s is a great place for bands to play, and it’s because they CARE about their bands and their customers! They don’t go for the trend of the week, they just provide a great place to hang out, drink some adult beverages, and listen to music!

Coming up on FRIDAY, JAN. 13, we’ll be at TRIPP’S HUMOUR BAR at 210 E. AVIATION, just off Pat Booker Road. Always lots of friendly faces at this comfortable place on the NE Side, and always a favorite destination.

On SATURDAY, JAN. 14, we head back to HOOLIGAN’S, over at 13920 I-35N (right next to the Live Oak Cinema, just off Loop 1604 and Pat Booker). What else can I say about Hooligan’s other than this place ROCKS! Great food, great staff, great drinks and a good time had by all.

In other news, thanks to Pace Concerts, we just got booked to play at the SBC CENTER (now called the AT&T CENTER) from 5:30-7 p.m. on WEDNESDAY, JAN. 25, on the patio prior to the AEROSMITH/LENNY KRAVITZ show. This event is in conjunction with KZEP Radio, so if you’re heading down a bit early for the show, come on by and hang out for a while! Add this to the rodeo on Feb. 9 and Oyster Bake Apr. 22, and we have truly been very fortunate so far, and it's all because of you, our friends and family, for supporting ALTER EGO! Thanks to everyone on the San Antonio music scene and see ya out there soon!

51 Acres B-Day Bash

from 51 Acres:

Come celebrate Troy and Fil's Bithdays this Friday at Crabby Jack's (281 N on the access road before Thousand Oaks). Music will start after 10pm and go all night long. Hopefully the b-day boys will make complete fools of themselves, which will ensure that everyone has a good time...

Thanx for suppporting live and local music!

Skunkweed Invades Q Bar

from Skunkweed:

Skunkweed is back in action for 2006. We'll be at Q-bar this near the I-10 / 410 interchange this Friday 1/13. It's where that Mamas used to be in front of the movie theatre. Festivities will commence around 9:30PM. It's the first time we've ever played there so watch the "regular" customers when they're not ready to have their asses imploded by lethal party rock. Plus, it's Friday the 13th so there's no telling the wacky hijinx Skunkweed has planned.

Flashback at Papa Ray's and More

from Flashback:

We have two practices left before throwing our new guitarist to the wolves, so to speak. Josh appears to be up to the task - this guy's playing is just amazing. We're concentrating on our existing set list right now so we can get back out there with almost no interruption in the schedule, but we will be adding a bunch of new songs in the very near future. Looks like we'll probably be bringing in some more AC/DC, Led Zeppelin (just wait til you hear Josh play Heartbreaker!), maybe some Metallica... we're definitely moving forward with the hard rock sound.

The schedule for this month brings Flashback to two new venues (for us). On the 21st we'll be at PapaRay's on St. Mary's, and on the 28th we'll be at the True Blue Roadhouse in LaVernia. Both shows should be great and will be the first chances for you to see Josh in action.

Our February schedule is also filling up, including a performance at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo on the Saturday the 4th in the Budweiser tent. Time is still TBA. We're really looking forward to this one! Later in February we'll be at the Trap, the Firehouse and Billy D's. More information is available on the Calendar page at http://www.flashbacksanantonio.com as always.

Flashback would like to thank you for your continued support and we look forward to a great 2006 with you!

An Interview with Mario from Reader

Interview: alfonso
Photos: courtesy of Jennytron (jennytron@gmail.com)

2005 was a very good year for the San Antonio-based indie dance rock collective known as Reader. In addition to playing shows and developing a loyal fan base, the band has also managed to record, produce, and design their first release, the beat box 5" EP—a package that sounds and looks amazing. Releasing a quality product is no easy or cheap endeavor but the band was able to manage costs through their own resourcefulness and live shows. And as anyone who’s seen them in 2005 would attest, a Reader show (part rock show and part dance party) is not to be missed.

Near the tail end of the holidays, I was able to interview Reader guitarist Mario through email. As instantly likeable and down-to-Earth as you can get, he talked about the band’s beginnings, the current EP and the one in the works, as well as the live experience that is a Reader show.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

How long have you guys been involved in the San Antonio music scene? What types of bands did you play in?

I have been involved for around 10 years or so. Everyone else about 5 years or so. We played in a variety of bands before the formation of Reader, ranging from instrumental post-rock, indie rock, electropop, and metal.

What were the circumstances that led to the formation of Reader? Were you all friends beforehand who just decided to form a new band?

The band started with the breakup of The Echidnas and The Jupiter Mission. Joe played bass in The Echidnas and I played guitar in The Jupiter Mission. We had talked about playing together for a while. Joe and I got together and started playing as a two-piece: Joe on drums and me on guitar. We got a hold of David (bass) because Joe knew him from another band and he lives around the corner from our practice spot. Joseph came into the picture when Joe invited him to a practice. I knew him from seeing him at shows and seeing his old bands play. As a side note, my sisters went to high school with all these guys so I would see them at their parties and whatnot. Joe told us about Miranda when she used to play in The Sexy Robots. We invited her to a practice and she liked what we were doing and we liked her vocals and energy to write music so she was in the band.

What does each band member offer to the overall sound and presentation of Reader?
Oh ok... let’s see.
Miranda's vocals are a strong factor in our sound and I think they catch the ears of people; her lyrics are catchy in the sense that people remember them and some seem to relate to them. Joe's drumming is creative, and he is willing to try something new but also keep it solid. He also helps with structuring the songs. With that, David keeps his bass loud and funky, but also adds some good-rocking, hard-hitting tone to the mix. Joe and David play off each other well since both play bass. In fact, all of the musicians play bass or have played bass in the past. I think I add just the right amount of guitar—not too over-the-top but not in the background. I like playing stuff that is fun but also add some good ambient and experimental sounds to the band. Last, but not least, is our man Joseph. Besides the fact that he plays, like, three instruments (keyboards, sax, and guitar), Joseph adds energy to our live shows and overall fun to the whole band. His sound is loud and noisy but very rhythmic and experimental.

As far as seeing us live, we generally like to dress in brown or in some kinda khaki. Miranda is usually in black, and David usually does the same route.

How does the band go about writing songs?

If one of us comes up with something at practice, then we just go with it. We write a lot of the music first and then we show it to Miranda and she writes lyrics—either on the spot or she has some already. We then just try and organize it as much as we can. Lately, a lot of our new songs have been longer so we have been trying to cut them down but still get a good song out of them.

Let’s talk about the beat box 5" EP. When and where was it recorded? How much time did it take to record?

It was recorded in late April 2005. We recorded it at Joseph’s house and our practice space. As a side note, Joseph is now recording bands at blacklion recording! It took us about two weeks to record. We did it fast because we wanted to make some kind of impact and we wanted people to hear our music.

I was especially impressed with the overall packaging. What was Jujubee Press's involvement as far as pressing the EP? How did Reader hook up with them?

Well, Joe and his sister are Jujubee! So we just did it in-house, so to speak. They created the artwork layout and we just went over what we liked and didn’t and played shows and paid for the whole CD. We did it all by ourselves and all with local people.

In the multimedia section of the EP, there’s a video for the song "Pledge." How much work was involved in finding a location, shooting, etc.? What previous experience did Joseph and Joe have in video editing?

Joe found us the spot and rented it out for a day! We were there for at least...6 hours. To my knowledge, Joe and Joseph are amateurs at video editing but they knew a lot of stuff by reading it and just trial and error.

As far as the beat box 5" EP is concerned, are there still copies available? Where can everyone pick up a copy?

We do still have copies and you can pick them up at our shows! We are going to probably have some for sale at 180 grams record store soon.

You’re also working on your next EP. What are you doing differently this time around? Are you making any drastic changes to the recording process or song writing?

We are taking our time this time around. We are also trying to push ourselves more than last time. We just want it to sound as good as it can to us and to critics of music in general. As far as making changes, the ones we are making are somewhat different. Joseph is playing guitar on three of the songs, more percussion is being used, and I’m trying to get a more organic sound out of my guitar rig. We are also trying to get the drums and bass sounding really good. We want Joe and David to carry the overall rhythm of the EP.

What can people expect when they see a Reader show?

Silly string, party poppers, and sweat! Also, Joseph running around or knocking me down. Broken drumsticks and people dancing on and off the stage.

Who are your favorite bands to play shows/hang out with?

Animals ofthe Bible, Yoshimoto, The Spark, The Mechanical Walking Robotboy, Girl(s) in a Coma, dancelikerobots, Prepare To Defend It, Wholesale Piracy...etc.

Reader recently played a show in the Rio Grande Valley. What was that experience like? What kind of music scene do they have down there?

It was fun but we didn’t get to play that long. We played a house party that got raided about three songs into our set! But the response was great!! The people liked us and we are in the process of trying to get back there soon!

The scene down there is diverse to say the least. The scene seems to be split into this real mainstream scene and this DIY[Do It Yourself] scene. So the DIY scene has diverse bills. You can see an indie hardcore band, punk band and an eight-bit shit band all in one night!

What was your favorite Reader show in the past year?

Oh wow. This past show with Japanther was great! Also the October show with dancelikerobots and Moonlights Reminder was real good! The show at 180 grams with Attractive and Popular was also very fun.

Any final thoughts or comments you would like to share with everyone?

We thank everyone for the support! Please try and make it out to our shows and dance! Also, there are a lot of good bands in town that need to be seen and it's good to know that, right now in town, it seems like people are supporting live music again!

Papa Wood: Thanks & BoozeHounds

from Papa Wood:

Greetings friends, first we want to thank everyone who came out to party with us this past Friday at Tripp's. It was a great way to start 2006, and the turnout was awesome. Thanks again to all of you "regulars" who we have been supporting us around town.

THIS FRIDAY, the 13th, Papa Wood will be at Boozehound's. Located just outside 410 at Perrin Beitel next to Lack's. Look for the orange sign with a "hound" dog on it. Scott and the gang there really know how to take care of the rock crowd, so if you haven't visited Boozehound's yet, allow us to be your excuse this Friday night.

We have a couple of special event shows to tell you about also. First, on Sat. Feb. 18th we'll be playing on the grounds of the Stock Show and Rodeo. That's the same night that Lynyrd Skynyrd will be performing. We'll give you the exact stage location soon.

Also, we just heard that we are booked to play St. Patrick's Day, March 17th at Bennigan's on Wurzbach & I-10. This obviously will be a huge drinking bonanza, so start making plans to get there early. We're set to start at 9pm.

Thanks for your continued support, and we'll see many of you this Friday night at Boozehound's.

Bombasta y Sexto Sol Collaborate at Sam's

Bombasta and Sexto Sol

DOUBLE HEADER AT SAM’S JAN.14th
Bombasta and Sexto Sol to share Sam’s Burger Joint stage in unique collaboration

Two of San Antonio’s most creative Chicano bands will return to the stage on January 14th to reunite for their bi-monthly event entitled “Barrio Massive 3: A Bombasta & Sexto Sol Collaboration.” After two highly successful performances at Sam’s Burger Joint, the two band collaboration has become a new cultural experience for a wide cross section of the city. Bridging new school cumbia funk with old school Latin soul, Bombasta & Sexto Sol are carving out a new musical history for San Antonio.

In a departure from the typical opening-band/ headlining-band format, the two groups will share the stage at Sam’s Burger Joint the entire evening. Both bands have developed into a brotherhood of musicians and will be rotating on and off stage, playing each other’s songs and closing out the night with a jam session on some classic Chicano standards. This event will also consist of performances by local DJ’s, poets and video artists. Saturday night’s show is the third in a series of “Barrio Massive” performances scheduled to take place over the next several months at Sam’s Burger Joint.

Bombasta fuses musica Chicana, reggae, cumbias and funk into a fresh mix of beats, rhymes and horn lines. The group is currently finishing their first independent CD release entitled Ill Movimiento, to be released early 2006. Sexto Sol brings sounds reminiscent of 70’s Style Chicano Soul and is currently promoting their new album ¡Gozalo! They have become an integral part of San Antonio’s artistic and cultural community with a loyal base of fans that
continues to grow.

The strong social consciousness of both bands is evident in both their lyrics and business style. They have invited community activist organizations and local vendors to set up tables at what’s sure to be a well-attended musical event. Contact Roberto Livar at 210.844.8043 for more information. Visit band websites at bombasta.com and sextosolsa.com for band bios, press clippings, fan postings, images, etc. Doors open at 9 PM; music continues until 2 AM.

Johnny Drama Update

from Johnny Drama:

Oh what a night!!!! Saturday night, at Wise Guys, was by far the biggest crowd to see a Johnny Drama show and you were all awesome. Heck, it might even surpass any LS (Lakescum) crowd as well. The party hit full throttle from the moment we started until the end of the night. We were a little worried about the attendance, since we had just played at Wise Guys the week before but you guys put that to rest before we even got started. There were so many people in the audience that night that the co-owner of Wise Guys, Sal, was impressed once again and we're sure to be back there in the next couple of months. For that, we have to thank all of you again. The pics are up on the website so check them out.

We had a good part of our loyal family and friends but there were also a lot of new faces in the crowd. We had a close friend celebrating her birthday with us that night too. Elvia, hope you enjoyed yourself and the Mana song. That was the first Spanish song we have ever done but we had fun with it.

Saturday seemed to be filled with a lot of musician friends of our as well. We'd like to thank them for coming out also. We had the guys (and gal, Roxy) from Madwagon in the house Saturday. Also saw some of String Theory out there. Of course, we have to thank Dave from Papawood for running our sound that night once again. The guy has done a phenomenal job for us the last couple of weeks in a row. Along with Dave, Fred and Todd from Papawood were at Wise Guys. It's always great to see so many other musicians out there showing support for one another. If you get a chance, AND WE'RE NOT PLAYING ON THE SAME NIGHT, you should go and see one of their shows as well. :-)

Well now we're ramping up to put on a hellacious show Friday, the 20th of January, back at The Place. So start making your plans now to be there and party with us. Butch and Tony, the owners of The Place, have been gracious enough to have us back because you guys, as always, leave a great impression with the support you show us. So we'll see you there...the show starts at 9:45 PM.

The word is getting out about Johnny Drama and more and more people seem to coming to see the shows. We have to thank you, our friends and family, for telling your friends to come and check us out. It really has a great effect on us when we're up on stage and can see some many of you having a great time. So the next time you're out at your favorite bar, be sure to mention to them that they should have us play out there. Give them the website address so that they can contact us.
