No Johnny Drama at Wise Guys

from Johnny Drama:

I wish I could say this was an April fools joke...but it's not!!

We've been dissed like a red headed stepchild by Wise Guys Bar. I got a phone call at 1:00PM today from Sal (co-owner) to let me know that we're not going to play there tonight after all. Instead, they will have Failsafe out there tonight. It seems that someone is having her birthday party out there and she wanted to have them play there instead. So we're left standing there with our %*&%$ in our hands not being able to schedule anything else. This was just a bad way of handling this, no matter how you look at it.

If I sound upset, it's because I am!! I know that there was a large number of you who were planning on going to Wise Guys tonight to check us out. We really do appreciate all that you guys do to show your love for us. We feel as though we're really letting all of you down. I promise that the next show, April 14,2006 @ The Place will be a huge success.

Sorry for the inconvenience and we hope to see you out at our next show. Hopefully it won't be cancelled as well. Have an awesome weekend.

Tim Reynolds at Jack's

from Jack's Patio Bar:

Jack's Patio Bar: Sunday April 2, 2006. Doors 8:00pm $17 advancecd $20 day of show

Tim Reynolds (solo acoustic)

jackspatiobar.com tix: frontgatetickets.com

Born in Weisbaden, Germany, the son of a devoutly religious military man, Tim spent much of his childhood moving-from Alaska to St. Louis and through much of the Bible-belt Midwest.

In a statement by Reynolds, "I come from nowhere mostly. My dad was in the Army so we moved around alot. Germany is where I was born, and after that we lived on a farm in Indiana, then on an army base in Alaska, then to Kansas, then to Missouri, where we lived the longest (thus the nowhere). Then I moved to Virginia, and I was there for 17 years or so. Now I live in New Mexico and this is the best place I could be. I mostly come from space."

As the child of pious, fiercely conservative parents, Reynolds’s musical introduction began at age 12, playing electric bass before writhing congregations of ecstatic worshippers three times a week (over 1000 times) until his high school graduation. Tiring of the constraints of imposed conservatism, he secretly plunged into jazz and "forbidden" late '60s and early '70s psychedelic rock. At age 18, he left home to join a group of "experimental" musicians. After absorbing much from them and the dozen other bands (from disco to country) that followed, he eventually settled in Charlottesville, Virginia.

There he founded TR3. It was in this environment that Tim Reynolds could explore his art, with impromptu performances on sitar, solo jazz guitar, solo djembe, twelve string guitar, violin, and mandolin. Tim's influences, which include Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Marilyn Manson, Bob Marley, Nine Inch Nails, and Led Zeppelin, among others, are indirectly felt in the fabric of Tim's power trio and solo projects.

Overall, Reynolds is a guitarist who rises above the mere mastery of chops to a virtual state of communion with his instrument. Reynolds makes use of every capacity the guitar possesses. He has brought a whole new sensibility to his instrument with his wide-ranging musical ability. From progressive rock, straight-up jazz and high-powered funk fusion guitar, to bass, piano, sitar, mandolin, violin, and a plethora of ethnic percussion instruments. When this self-taught musician performs it is a symphony of the senses.

After 17 or so years in Charlottesville, Virginia, Tim now resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and as Tim stated, "It is the best place I could be."

We're BAAACK!!!

That’s right MERGE Maniacs. After a long hiatus we’re finally back in the saddle. We’ve had a few personnel changes so let’s see if we can bring you up to date.

First off, BIG THANKS to Bryan (aka “Plan B”) for helping get this project rolling in the first place. He was one of the founders of MERGE and we hope to see him out at a show sometime so he can continue to party with us.

After a few personnel changes we’ve settled on a 5 piece line up with MERGE. The core line-up of Jonathan, Michelle and Keith remain and we’ve brought on Billy Hollywood and John (aka Slacko) from E7. Don’t worry E7 fans…E7 will continue on. John, Billy and Jonathan will simply be pulling double duty as they rock out with both E7 and MERGE. Now it will just be two separate bands with some similar faces, but slightly different formats. In the end, it’s all good. The new MERGE line up is a reunion of sorts from the days Billy, John, Jonathan, and Keith were “jammin” in old school E7. Anybody remember the days of “State of Independence”, “Oh Carolina”, and “Mr. Boombastic”!?

So anyway…we hope you’ll join us for our “Re-eMERGEnce.” Is that a word? Who cares! After knocking out a private party in early April, we’re kicking it up in Austin at Cool River Café. If you find yourself up in Austin on 4/7, we hope you’ll come join us. After that we’re helping our good friends Tony and Carla celebrate their wedding in style. More dates to come so stay tuned.

The New Old Deja Vu at Main Street

Deja Vu announces a special show, Saturday, April 1st at Main St. It's the New Old New Deja Vu featuring old, old-old, and new old members. On tap will be a nursing student's birthday party (with naughty nursing students), a teacher's birthday party (Brett) complete with drunk teachers, the return of Andyfest (just come see), a final chapter, the return of The Kilt, a sex-toy party after-party, and shattered bar records. Seriously, people have been talking about this for 3 weeks now, calling to see if they can reserve tables and stuff. This is going to BLOW AWAY the time we had my previous last night with the band in November. It's going to BLOW AWAY the record breaking night we had in July. Any band that is off Saturday, YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS! We're breaking out new music by Seether and Audioslave as well as reviving some classic Doors, Romantics, and Nickelback. Yes, the 80's will live Saturday night, but they will be rudely punctuated with headslaps from today's musical scene! This started off as a fun thing to do, and has spiraled beyond our control into a party of immensely irresposponsible proportions! NO COVER. GREAT SERVICE. GAS STATION WITH CIGARETTES NEARBY. BE THERE!

from Ruta Maya:

We’re in a festive mood and we want you to join in on the fun. To celebrate our official grand opening, we have organized a jam-packed lineup of bands and performers over four fantastic nights starting this Thursday, March 30. There is no reason why you should be bored this weekend:

Thursday, March 30 @ 8pm

Make San Antonio Weird

A spokenword circus featuring some of the finest performers in the country. Such as Da Shade, star of the film “Slam Planet”. Or Austin Slam Champ Mathew Conley. Or Michener-fellow, Phil West. Or twenty other, top-notch performers. Also featuring the Haiku of Delphi! Prizes! Giveaways! It’s a spokenword circus! Hosted by Amanda Flores (ninja) and Rich Perin (2002 best local poet, San Antonio Current). Only $3!

Friday, March 31 @ 10pm

The Groove Movement

Take jazz, blues, rock, funk, reggae and soul and you have the sound of The Groove Movement. A favorite of Ruta Maya Austin, this will be our live music kick-off event! Only $5!

Saturday, April 1 @ 10pm

Bombasta & Sexto Sol

No, this is no April Fools. Two dazzling bands that will activate the shake in your booty. Both are known for their electrifying live performances that leave audiences mesmerized. Amazing Latin-groove music! Brass sections! Percussion crazy! Some people go to the gym. Some people dance. Only $5!

Sunday, April 2 @ 9pm

Girl in a Coma

If you haven’t seen the Girls live yet, this is your chance before they hit the big time. Okay, so you can compare them to the Manchester sound or talk about their melodic pop sensibilities but, if we’re honest, they’ve invented their own sound that uniquely captures San Anto. Boz Boorer, Morrissey’s guitarist, has recorded them. Joan Jett digs them. Why wouldn’t you be at this show? All Ages. Only $5!

Wow! So much fun! Come on down and join in! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity: The Ruta Maya Riverwalk Grand Opening!

All shows 18 & up except where noted.

Lawn Darts & Alcohol at Bar Fly Friday

Toatlee Bluz & Alter Ego

Went out to the Elbow Room Saturday to tend to some bizness and ended up hanging out for a little while, talking to a friend I haven’t seen in about 15 years, which was nice, and listening to the blues/jazz/funk of Toatlee Bluz. I only caught a few songs, but I was very impressed, especially with the trumpet player and the keyboardist. The guitarist was pretty impressive, too. I don’t recall hearing any vocals, so I guess their stuff is mostly instrumental. My main thought that kept going thru my head was that I felt like I should be in New Orleans. I mentioned this and someone said, “only if you can swim,” which saddened me a little, picturing the New Orleans I went to several years ago and the state that it’s probably in now. Anyway, these guys were good. They play at the Elbow Room and at Rolling Oaks Sports Bar quite often, so check ’em out if you dig that blues/jazz/funk fusion kinda stuff. Very cool.

They’ll be at Rolling Oaks Sports Bar April 1st and at The Elbow Room April 29th.

Being out alone, I decided to stay close to home, so I headed next over to my fave local bar - Boozehounds, where Alter Ego was playing. These guys always play a great mix of songs and Saturday was no exception. I walked into some STP with “Sex Type Thing,” then was treated to Bush “Come Down” and Godsmack “Awake.”

Then break time and I got to chat with Steve about music, the local scene, writing, upcoming acts, Alter Egos’s packed schedule this month and more - a very cool guy - I don’t care what they say about you, Steve! (Just kidding!)

I also got to meet Steve Freeman and Toni from The Edge Magazine - both very nice and very into local music. They were out hopping from bar to bar, planning to end up at The Mix to catch fin del mar. They invited me to join them, but I was already up 5 beers and a shot and decided that driving home from St Mary’s at this point was probably a bad idea!!

So I stayed. My set list notes get a little sketchy from here on out, cuz I spent a lot of my time talking to THIS guy about local music and music in general. I do know they played Bush “Machinehead,” Johnny Cash “Ring of Fire” (very cool), Weezer’s “Hashpipe,” 3 Doors Down “Kryptonite,” Lit "My Own Worst Enemy,” Sublime “Santeria,” Audioslave “Like a Stone”, The Cult “Wildflower,” STP “Wicked Garden,” Cracker’s “Low” their Judas Priest -Billy Idol medley of “You Got Another Thing Coming” and “Mony Mony ,” which my “friend” managed to screw up - very funny. Also 7 Mary Three’s “Cumbersome,” Radiohead’s “Creep,” and The Toadies’ “Possum Kingdom.”.

I got three videos, not too great on visuals cuz there was no front lighting, so they’re mostly silhouettes. Also, quite often Steve is missing cuz he likes to get off stage and run around the bar, which people love!

I got Tool “Sober,” Alice in Chains “Would” and Blink-182 “All the Small Things” over on the Video Page.

As I mentioned, Alter Ego has a full schedule this month...you can check them out this Friday at Legends Sports Bar, this Saturday at Pat O’Brien’s, or check their website for future dates.

They're Trying to Close Graham Central Station?

I hadn't heard about this...just came across it. This is from www.sanewspaper.com:

This establishment, Graham Central Station, has been under investigation by the San Antonio Police Department (S.A.P.D.) and the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (T.A.B.C.). Graham Central Station’s liquor license will be under review in April, 2006.

Today there are representatives here such as school board candidates, representatives of neighborhood associations, businessmen, members of the clergy/pastors, community leaders and future public officials. We are taking a stand for the protection of our youth and the preservation of wholesome family life.

Today, we are demanding as residents of District 7 and leaders in this city, that Graham Central Station be closed. Graham Central Station has a history of very destructive influence in our community such as shootings, murder, prostitution, consumption of alcohol by minors, public drunkenness, and other violations.

As community leaders in San Antonio, we want to put a stop to this lawlessness. Furthermore, we will not tolerate any further delays, “deal-makings,” postponements or compromises of any kind.

Today we come together in one accord by writing letters of protest and signing petitions to close Graham Central Station in April 2006.

Deja Vu: Brett is Back

Previous singer Brett will be filling in for Deja Vu singer Xavier for the next 4-6 weeks while Xavier rests his vocal chords. They'll be playing at Roxy Sports Bar this Saturday (3/25) and at Main Street on April 1st...I hear it's going to be OFF THE HOOK!

Johnny Drama at Starlight

from Johnny Drama:

Was it just me or were all of you out to party extra hard this past weekend? Man, It was great to see all of you out and celebrating St. Paddy's Day with us at Hooligan's Bar and Grill. The festivities were off the hook. Those of you who weren't there really missed out on one helluva party!!! The place was filled to the rafters. Both the upstairs and downstairs were packed and it just never faded out. On behalf of all the guys in the band, I want to thank both Shana and Trevor for giving us this great opportunity and we hope to be back at Hooligan's again very soon.

Saturday we played at Tiffany Billiards...hold on! It's not Tiffany Billiards anymore. The new official name is Tiffany Sports Bar & Patio and I have to say, they have a done a great job with this place. It's not your daddy's Tiffany Billiards anymore. They have added an outdoor patio in the back and they are really working on changing the overall atmosphere to the place. Yet I digress...the show Saturday night was awesome. As always, we had a great number of you loyal friends who came out to show some love. We also made some new friends that night as well. The staff was fantastic, from Dominic (General Manger) to Pam cooking up the food. You all really need to come and check it out the next time we're there. Any predisposed notions should be thrown out the door...believe me, you will be pleasantly surprised.

The pictures for both of this past weekends shows are up, so go ahead and check them out on the website.

Now here comes another weekend and of course we'll be out to entertain you. We'll be playing at a new place here in town. The Starlight Room just opened up a couple of months ago and I really like this place a lot. It's located at 1031 Patricia (near West Ave. & Blanco). We're playing there this Friday, March 24, 2006 starting at 9:45 PM. The bar is great, the stage is big and the dance floor is even bigger so bring you dancing shoes.

I've been there to check the place out and it's a very contemporary and clean place. Megan (Bar Manager) and Chris (Co-Owner) are great people. They are really excited about having us, including all of you, out there this Friday night. So make your plans to be out there and support the few places in San Antonio that still bring live music to you.

Flashback Update

from Flashback:

After a couple weeks off to fulfill various family obligations and just have a little time off, we'll be back to a full schedule starting this weekend. Friday night, the 24th, we'll be at Main Street (13477 Wetmore 210-490-3038). Saturday night, the 25th, we'll be returning to Tripp's Humor Bar (210 E. Aviation in Universal City 210-659-1090). We've played at Tripp's a number of times, but this will be the first time with the whole band (Lupe has missed out on every other gig we've played there).

Our time off wasn't completely unproductive, as we managed to squeeze in a rare (and short) band practice - which resulted in eight new additions to our set lists. We're hoping to find the time in April for another one so we can knock out a few more from the monstrous to-do list. So many songs, so little time...

We now have videos ava
