No Johnny Drama at Wise Guys

from Johnny Drama:

I wish I could say this was an April fools joke...but it's not!!

We've been dissed like a red headed stepchild by Wise Guys Bar. I got a phone call at 1:00PM today from Sal (co-owner) to let me know that we're not going to play there tonight after all. Instead, they will have Failsafe out there tonight. It seems that someone is having her birthday party out there and she wanted to have them play there instead. So we're left standing there with our %*&%$ in our hands not being able to schedule anything else. This was just a bad way of handling this, no matter how you look at it.

If I sound upset, it's because I am!! I know that there was a large number of you who were planning on going to Wise Guys tonight to check us out. We really do appreciate all that you guys do to show your love for us. We feel as though we're really letting all of you down. I promise that the next show, April 14,2006 @ The Place will be a huge success.

Sorry for the inconvenience and we hope to see you out at our next show. Hopefully it won't be cancelled as well. Have an awesome weekend.

Tim Reynolds at Jack's

from Jack's Patio Bar:

Jack's Patio Bar: Sunday April 2, 2006. Doors 8:00pm $17 advancecd $20 day of show

Tim Reynolds (solo acoustic)

jackspatiobar.com tix: frontgatetickets.com

Born in Weisbaden, Germany, the son of a devoutly religious military man, Tim spent much of his childhood moving-from Alaska to St. Louis and through much of the Bible-belt Midwest.

In a statement by Reynolds, "I come from nowhere mostly. My dad was in the Army so we moved around alot. Germany is where I was born, and after that we lived on a farm in Indiana, then on an army base in Alaska, then to Kansas, then to Missouri, where we lived the longest (thus the nowhere). Then I moved to Virginia, and I was there for 17 years or so. Now I live in New Mexico and this is the best place I could be. I mostly come from space."

As the child of pious, fiercely conservative parents, Reynolds’s musical introduction began at age 12, playing electric bass before writhing congregations of ecstatic worshippers three times a week (over 1000 times) until his high school graduation. Tiring of the constraints of imposed conservatism, he secretly plunged into jazz and "forbidden" late '60s and early '70s psychedelic rock. At age 18, he left home to join a group of "experimental" musicians. After absorbing much from them and the dozen other bands (from disco to country) that followed, he eventually settled in Charlottesville, Virginia.

There he founded TR3. It was in this environment that Tim Reynolds could explore his art, with impromptu performances on sitar, solo jazz guitar, solo djembe, twelve string guitar, violin, and mandolin. Tim's influences, which include Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Marilyn Manson, Bob Marley, Nine Inch Nails, and Led Zeppelin, among others, are indirectly felt in the fabric of Tim's power trio and solo projects.

Overall, Reynolds is a guitarist who rises above the mere mastery of chops to a virtual state of communion with his instrument. Reynolds makes use of every capacity the guitar possesses. He has brought a whole new sensibility to his instrument with his wide-ranging musical ability. From progressive rock, straight-up jazz and high-powered funk fusion guitar, to bass, piano, sitar, mandolin, violin, and a plethora of ethnic percussion instruments. When this self-taught musician performs it is a symphony of the senses.

After 17 or so years in Charlottesville, Virginia, Tim now resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and as Tim stated, "It is the best place I could be."

They are deeply sorry for the cancellation but promise to put their high energy into every song at the Firehouse. If you were planning on seeing IRIS at the Trap change your plans and check them out at the Firehouse Saturday. Show time starts at 9:30 sharp.

We're BAAACK!!!

That’s right MERGE Maniacs. After a long hiatus we’re finally back in the saddle. We’ve had a few personnel changes so let’s see if we can bring you up to date.

First off, BIG THANKS to Bryan (aka “Plan B”) for helping get this project rolling in the first place. He was one of the founders of MERGE and we hope to see him out at a show sometime so he can continue to party with us.

After a few personnel changes we’ve settled on a 5 piece line up with MERGE. The core line-up of Jonathan, Michelle and Keith remain and we’ve brought on Billy Hollywood and John (aka Slacko) from E7. Don’t worry E7 fans…E7 will continue on. John, Billy and Jonathan will simply be pulling double duty as they rock out with both E7 and MERGE. Now it will just be two separate bands with some similar faces, but slightly different formats. In the end, it’s all good. The new MERGE line up is a reunion of sorts from the days Billy, John, Jonathan, and Keith were “jammin” in old school E7. Anybody remember the days of “State of Independence”, “Oh Carolina”, and “Mr. Boombastic”!?

So anyway…we hope you’ll join us for our “Re-eMERGEnce.” Is that a word? Who cares! After knocking out a private party in early April, we’re kicking it up in Austin at Cool River Café. If you find yourself up in Austin on 4/7, we hope you’ll come join us. After that we’re helping our good friends Tony and Carla celebrate their wedding in style. More dates to come so stay tuned.

The New Old Deja Vu at Main Street

Deja Vu announces a special show, Saturday, April 1st at Main St. It's the New Old New Deja Vu featuring old, old-old, and new old members. On tap will be a nursing student's birthday party (with naughty nursing students), a teacher's birthday party (Brett) complete with drunk teachers, the return of Andyfest (just come see), a final chapter, the return of The Kilt, a sex-toy party after-party, and shattered bar records. Seriously, people have been talking about this for 3 weeks now, calling to see if they can reserve tables and stuff. This is going to BLOW AWAY the time we had my previous last night with the band in November. It's going to BLOW AWAY the record breaking night we had in July. Any band that is off Saturday, YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS! We're breaking out new music by Seether and Audioslave as well as reviving some classic Doors, Romantics, and Nickelback. Yes, the 80's will live Saturday night, but they will be rudely punctuated with headslaps from today's musical scene! This started off as a fun thing to do, and has spiraled beyond our control into a party of immensely irresposponsible proportions! NO COVER. GREAT SERVICE. GAS STATION WITH CIGARETTES NEARBY. BE THERE!

Thursday, March 30 @ 8pm

Make San Antonio Weird

A spokenword circus featuring some of the finest performers in the country. Such as Da Shade, star of the film “Slam Planet”. Or Austin Slam Champ Mathew Conley. Or Michener-fellow, Phil West. Or twenty other, top-notch performers. Also featuring the Haiku of Delphi! Prizes! Giveaways! It’s a spokenword circus! Hosted by Amanda Flores (ninja) and Rich Perin (2002 best local poet, San Antonio Current). Only $3!

Friday, March 31 @ 10pm

The Groove Movement

Take jazz, blues, rock, funk, reggae and soul and you have the sound of The Groove Movement. A favorite of Ruta Maya Austin, this will be our live music kick-off event! Only $5!

Saturday, April 1 @ 10pm

Bombasta & Sexto Sol

No, this is no April Fools. Two dazzling bands that will activate the shake in your booty. Both are known for their electrifying live performances that leave audiences mesmerized. Amazing Latin-groove music! Brass sections! Percussion crazy! Some people go to the gym. Some people dance. Only $5!

Sunday, April 2 @ 9pm

Girl in a Coma

If you haven’t seen the Girls live yet, this is your chance before they hit the big time. Okay, so you can compare them to the Manchester sound or talk about their melodic pop sensibilities but, if we’re honest, they’ve invented their own sound that uniquely captures San Anto. Boz Boorer, Morrissey’s guitarist, has recorded them. Joan Jett digs them. Why wouldn’t you be at this show? All Ages. Only $5!

Wow! So much fun! Come on down and join in! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity: The Ruta Maya Riverwalk Grand Opening!

All shows 18 & up except where noted.

Toatlee Bluz & Alter Ego

Went out to the Elbow Room Saturday to tend to some bizness and ended up hanging out for a little while, talking to a friend I haven’t seen in about 15 years, which was nice, and listening to the blues/jazz/funk of Toatlee Bluz. I only caught a few songs, but I was very impressed, especially with the trumpet player and the keyboardist. The guitarist was pretty impressive, too. I don’t recall hearing any vocals, so I guess their stuff is mostly instrumental. My main thought that kept going thru my head was that I felt like I should be in New Orleans. I mentioned this and someone said, “only if you can swim,” which saddened me a little, picturing the New Orleans I went to several years ago and the state that it’s probably in now. Anyway, these guys were good. They play at the Elbow Room and at Rolling Oaks Sports Bar quite often, so check ’em out if you dig that blues/jazz/funk fusion kinda stuff. Very cool.

They’ll be at Rolling Oaks Sports Bar April 1st and at The Elbow Room April 29th.

Being out alone, I decided to stay close to home, so I headed next over to my fave local bar - Boozehounds, where Alter Ego was playing. These guys always play a great mix of songs and Saturday was no exception. I walked into some STP with “Sex Type Thing,” then was treated to Bush “Come Down” and Godsmack “Awake.”

Then break time and I got to chat with Steve about music, the local scene, writing, upcoming acts, Alter Egos’s packed schedule this month and more - a very cool guy - I don’t care what they say about you, Steve! (Just kidding!)

I also got to meet Steve Freeman and Toni from The Edge Magazine - both very nice and very into local music. They were out hopping from bar to bar, planning to end up at The Mix to catch fin del mar. They invited me to join them, but I was already up 5 beers and a shot and decided that driving home from St Mary’s at this point was probably a bad idea!!

So I stayed. My set list notes get a little sketchy from here on out, cuz I spent a lot of my time talking to THIS guy about local music and music in general. I do know they played Bush “Machinehead,” Johnny Cash “Ring of Fire” (very cool), Weezer’s “Hashpipe,” 3 Doors Down “Kryptonite,” Lit "My Own Worst Enemy,” Sublime “Santeria,” Audioslave “Like a Stone”, The Cult “Wildflower,” STP “Wicked Garden,” Cracker’s “Low” their Judas Priest -Billy Idol medley of “You Got Another Thing Coming” and “Mony Mony ,” which my “friend” managed to screw up - very funny. Also 7 Mary Three’s “Cumbersome,” Radiohead’s “Creep,” and The Toadies’ “Possum Kingdom.”.

I got three videos, not too great on visuals cuz there was no front lighting, so they’re mostly silhouettes. Also, quite often Steve is missing cuz he likes to get off stage and run around the bar, which people love!

I got Tool “Sober,” Alice in Chains “Would” and Blink-182 “All the Small Things” over on the Video Page.

As I mentioned, Alter Ego has a full schedule this month...you can check them out this Friday at Legends Sports Bar, this Saturday at Pat O’Brien’s, or check their website for future dates.

They're Trying to Close Graham Central Station?

I hadn't heard about this...just came across it. This is from www.sanewspaper.com:

This establishment, Graham Central Station, has been under investigation by the San Antonio Police Department (S.A.P.D.) and the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (T.A.B.C.). Graham Central Station’s liquor license will be under review in April, 2006.

Today there are representatives here such as school board candidates, representatives of neighborhood associations, businessmen, members of the clergy/pastors, community leaders and future public officials. We are taking a stand for the protection of our youth and the preservation of wholesome family life.

Today, we are demanding as residents of District 7 and leaders in this city, that Graham Central Station be closed. Graham Central Station has a history of very destructive influence in our community such as shootings, murder, prostitution, consumption of alcohol by minors, public drunkenness, and other violations.

As community leaders in San Antonio, we want to put a stop to this lawlessness. Furthermore, we will not tolerate any further delays, “deal-makings,” postponements or compromises of any kind.

Today we come together in one accord by writing letters of protest and signing petitions to close Graham Central Station in April 2006.

Deja Vu: Brett is Back

Previous singer Brett will be filling in for Deja Vu singer Xavier for the next 4-6 weeks while Xavier rests his vocal chords. They'll be playing at Roxy Sports Bar this Saturday (3/25) and at Main Street on April 1st...I hear it's going to be OFF THE HOOK!

St. James at Houston St. Fair

Johnny Drama at Starlight

from Johnny Drama:

Was it just me or were all of you out to party extra hard this past weekend? Man, It was great to see all of you out and celebrating St. Paddy's Day with us at Hooligan's Bar and Grill. The festivities were off the hook. Those of you who weren't there really missed out on one helluva party!!! The place was filled to the rafters. Both the upstairs and downstairs were packed and it just never faded out. On behalf of all the guys in the band, I want to thank both Shana and Trevor for giving us this great opportunity and we hope to be back at Hooligan's again very soon.

Saturday we played at Tiffany Billiards...hold on! It's not Tiffany Billiards anymore. The new official name is Tiffany Sports Bar & Patio and I have to say, they have a done a great job with this place. It's not your daddy's Tiffany Billiards anymore. They have added an outdoor patio in the back and they are really working on changing the overall atmosphere to the place. Yet I digress...the show Saturday night was awesome. As always, we had a great number of you loyal friends who came out to show some love. We also made some new friends that night as well. The staff was fantastic, from Dominic (General Manger) to Pam cooking up the food. You all really need to come and check it out the next time we're there. Any predisposed notions should be thrown out the door...believe me, you will be pleasantly surprised.

The pictures for both of this past weekends shows are up, so go ahead and check them out on the website.

www.SADRAMA.com

Now here comes another weekend and of course we'll be out to entertain you. We'll be playing at a new place here in town. The Starlight Room just opened up a couple of months ago and I really like this place a lot. It's located at 1031 Patricia (near West Ave. & Blanco). We're playing there this Friday, March 24, 2006 starting at 9:45 PM. The bar is great, the stage is big and the dance floor is even bigger so bring you dancing shoes.

I've been there to check the place out and it's a very contemporary and clean place. Megan (Bar Manager) and Chris (Co-Owner) are great people. They are really excited about having us, including all of you, out there this Friday night. So make your plans to be out there and support the few places in San Antonio that still bring live music to you.

Flashback Update

from Flashback:

After a couple weeks off to fulfill various family obligations and just have a little time off, we'll be back to a full schedule starting this weekend. Friday night, the 24th, we'll be at Main Street (13477 Wetmore 210-490-3038). Saturday night, the 25th, we'll be returning to Tripp's Humor Bar (210 E. Aviation in Universal City 210-659-1090). We've played at Tripp's a number of times, but this will be the first time with the whole band (Lupe has missed out on every other gig we've played there).

Our time off wasn't completely unproductive, as we managed to squeeze in a rare (and short) band practice - which resulted in eight new additions to our set lists. We're hoping to find the time in April for another one so we can knock out a few more from the monstrous to-do list. So many songs, so little time...

We now have videos available for download on the website. Not the greatest quality and the file sizes are larger than we'd hoped, but it's a start. As Brad figures out how to work his programs more effectively we should be able to shrink the file sizes while restoring some of the quality. The plans also include offering short samples of each video for those who don't want to deal with the large downloads. In the meantime, you can check out what's there on the Songs page.

Roger is in the process of looking into having Flashback shirts made. We hope to have some available in the near future. The danged things ain't cheap unless you buy bulk, but he may have found a solution...

Finally, Gen's Menage (Gen, Josh and Brad) is playing at Orphan Annie's (3621 West Ave. 210-377-0744) on Wednesday nights through the end of March (and hopefully beyond), and the Lava Lounge (1515 N. St. Mary's 210-277-5151) on Sunday nights for the foreseeable future. Definitely not unplugged; it's a fun, intimate and relaxed show where you can hear a different side of Gen's amazing voice, as well as hearing Josh and Brad spontaneously break into songs they've never played before.

As always, we truly appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you
at our shows!

Save the Riverwalk

Just wanted to bring this to everyone's attention. There is an online petition to the San Antonio City Council you might want to take a look at. The petition's aim is to stop large chains and franchises from taking over the Riverwalk and causing it to lose its uniqueness and local flavor. The petition was created and written by local jazz-man Jim Cullum and Justin Arecchi, who recently had to close his hand-made ice cream shop after 25 years because he couldn't match the price paid by Landry's Inc., who wanted to put a Saltgrass Steakhouse there. Landry's also bought another historic downtown building last year to put up a Rainforest Cafe.

If you care about the San Antonio Riverwalk keeping its unique flavor, go check out this petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/sariver/. The original deadline for the petition was March 7th, but I understand it has been extended. I don't know for how long though, so don't put off signing it!

Preying Mantis No More

The band Preying Mantis is changing its name to REDEFINED. According to guitarist Gerry:

We're going to be changing the name of the band. After careful consideration we chose REDEFINED as our new name. We never really planned to keep Preying Mantis this long but now I think the time is right to change it since we have a new singer and drummer. IT's basically the Regenerator band with a new singer. This is the best lineup I've ever played with by far. We're finishing up the rest of this month as Preying Mantis and letting people know at all of our shows what the new name is. Everything being booked from here on out will be as REDEFINED.

Psychoholics Interview

I recently had the honor to do an e-mail interview with Charlie George of the Psychoholics. This band has been around for close to 15 years. I remember seeing them "back in the day" at Sneakers. It's really cool to see a good local band sticking around for so long and still kicking SA's butt!

The Psychoholics will be playing tonight (Fri Mar 17) at The Irish Pub. Check 'em out!

The Interview

The Psychoholics have been around in San Antonio for about 15 years now. That's a long time in a town where bands spring up and disappear almost monthly, it seems. What is it about the Psychoholics that has allowed the band to persevere where so many bands have failed?

Probably that we've all known each other for so long that we are like brothers. We fight like brothers but we're still family. Several of us our from military families and we're brought up with certain moral beliefs about loyalty. Also, we have nothing better to do.

The band has been through numerous changes in band members. So much so that you have a "family tree" on your website that graphically details all the changes in lineup. Do you think these changes have held the band back or contributed to its growth as a band?

Well, we've all at least known each other since High School. This band has had around 28 different members since we started in 91, but right now, 3 of us are original members. We've all quit, played in other bands and come back. We just like the familiar old songs I guess. We know what to expect from each other. We've weeded out the people we couldn't work with and stuck with the ones we can.

How has the Psychoholics music evolved over the years? How has your style changed since the band started out?

We started out pretty much as a punk-pop band and that hasn't changed much. When we were doing it in the early 90's, it wasn't that cool, now there's a lot of bands with that sound, so it's come around. The core of our music is punk-pop but in the last few years we have made our sound very eclectic. We touch on folk, country, hip-hop, metal, psychedlia, etc. The idea of this band is not to pigeonhole ourselves into one genre.

Who were your influences at the beginning? Have any newer bands had an effect on your music?

Personally, I have a triumvirate of influences: The Beatles, The Sex Pistols and Pink Floyd. I think our singer Tim shares that as well, although he's probably also heavily influenced by the Stones, Zeppelin. I also listened to Lou Reed a lot back in the day. Other guys in the band dig Rush quite a bit, something Tim and I don't share. Green Day, the Foo Fighters, Louis XIV, Strokes, Gorillaz, etc.

I caught a Psychoholics show back in the day at Sneakers. The main thing I remember is one of the band members running around in a Gumby costume. I have also heard about an Energizer Bunny costume. How did the costume idea come about and do the Psychoholics still do this?

Gone are most of the clubs with big stages like Sneakers and Rock Island. It's a bit difficult to pull off shows like we used to in these small clubs. We used to really like to catch peoples attention and hold it there, even if they weren't into the music, you could still have fun at our shows. We would have dancers on stage, Godzilla fighting batman, etc. We still try to be flamboyant in the way we dress and try to bring out a lot of lights, fog machines, props, toilet paper guns, etc.

I had to leave that show early and go to work, but I heard that the singer "exposed himself" at that show. Some people said he didn't. Do you remember, is it true?

Ha ha. Tim used to wear this rather elaborate outfit that was kind of like a flesh-colored body stocking. Attached to it he had this kind of home-made “cabbage-patch” penis. It was made of pantyhose nylon and stuffed with cotton. It had thick carpeting for cubic hair. It was also about 14 inches long, so if somebody thought that was his real endowment they either need glasses or have a vivid imagination.

As veterans in the SA music scene, what changes have you noticed in the local scene over the years and what changes would you like to see in the future?

Howbout an actual SCENE? This town can be so apathetic. Also there was a few bands in the mid 90's that seemed to break up right when they were getting really good or on the verge of something. Then there's the bands like us that just overstay there welcome. You can't get rid of us!

The Psychoholics are currently working on releasing their first CD in 10 years (one of the songs, "Mardi Gras," is on the SA Rocks jukebox and sounds great!). You've been working on recording these tunes for some time now. How's that going? When do you project the CD will come out?

Hopefully this summer. We've pushed it back a dozen times. It's mainly a money problem at this point. We agonized over the songs, title, cover art, for over 3 years now. It's finally mixed and ready to be mastered and pressed. All we need now is the money to get that ball rolling. We're saving.

The Psychoholics will be performing at The Irish Pub tonight for St. Patrick's Day. What can we expect from this show? Tell the people why they should come to this gig.

You'll GET LAID. We've always tried to make ourselves THE holiday band. We play Xmas, Halloween, Valentine's Day shows. When we do, we really try to get into the spirit of that holiday and make it an appropriate “event”. This is the Irish Mardis Gras. It's St. Patrick's Day and it's at The Irish Pub. That's “THE” Irish Pub. Last year we played there on St. Patty's. It was packed to the gills from 5pm on. The night crowd was pandemonium. That was a Thursday, this year it's a Friday, so it should be totally off-the-hook. Don't tell the fire marshal.

Step Aside at the Elbow Room

Back in Business (I Think!)

My internet service finally seems to be back in business. So Sunday's listings should be up sometime tomorrow. I apologize for the break in service!

Saturday, March 11, 2006

SORRY!

I apologize that my internet service has been on and off all weekend. I haven't been able to get the schedules up because it's been going in and out. Also, apologies to those who sent me stuff to post that didn't get put up because I couldn't get online.

A note on the plus side before I get cut off again:

I don't know if any of you have heard of Pandora.com and the Music Genome Project, but it's a really cool site that helps guide you on your quest for music that you'll like, based on the qualities of the music that turns you on. Rolling Stone recently had an article about it, which turned me onto it. Anyway, my point is that I have an appointment to talk to someone from Pandora about local music. They sought me out, which tells me that SA music has drawn interest from other quarters, which I think is a good sign! I'll let you know how it goes!

Observations from the Drummer's Wife

Review from Donna Doyle, wife of the drummer of The Bad Boys:

I'd like to begin by saying, I don't have any particularly impressive status, I'm just the wife of the drummer for the Bad Boys. This is my account, and my opinions. I just want to say:

THE BAD BOYS ARE BACK!!!

The Boys have been playing collectively and independently with numerous projects in and around San Antonio for close to 30 years now. The Bad Boys were formed around 1988 playing classic rock with some original music thrown in. The guys have returned from their hiatus {that seemed like a lifetime}. So I am spreading the word, and in doing so would like to share some thoughts and observations.

There's just nothing in the world like good live music, good Bad Boys live rock and roll. The band played a Saturday nite in early February at The Bay {formerly Iguana Bay}. The club has recently reopened, promoting local live music once more. They've remodeled nicely, taking out the wall blocking out the back room. It's much more open and airy, making the sound better throughout the club. You guys over at The Bay did a real good job. The stage is bigger and they redid the bathrooms{thank you}.

Anyway, the Bad Boys were phenomenal {I could stop right there, but you know I won't} and the club was packed, despite the rodeo in town, and if anyone balked paying the $3 cover I am certain they felt they got their moneys' worth after two or three songs, and so much more! THE BOYS WERE ON. They were tight, they were electric, there just are no words to describe how awesome it was. It's not just talent, because I know how talented they all are, it goes beyond that. The charisma and chemistry between the four of them is second to none, but they tap into something else, it's magical and so cool to witness.

I noticed several first timers to the Bad Boys in The Bay that night and it was great to watch the band through their eyes for the first time. I enjoyed watching them get fired up about the band, I guess they were really glad they sprung for the cover that nite.

The vocals were excellent and the sound was great, each song better than the last, until San Antonio's favorite original; "Heaven on a Harley", wrapped up the night. From the first few notes of their Steve Miller intro throughout the entire evening they were wonderful! The Gavin Degraw tune, "I Don't Wanna Be" was superb and did they EVER rock the Velvet Revolver and the Queens of The Stone Age - there are no words...

The crowd was almost as loud as the band, several time I overheard people asking "what's THAT song?" or exclaiming "that's one of my favorites!". They were raving about the cover tunes; the Hendrix, the ZZ Top and the Audio Slave to name a few, {my personal all time BB favorite, "Must Have Been the Wine", was so hot they almost burned the place down!} The crowd was so charged up; hooping and hollering and whistling between songs, I was told they could hear the racket down the block! {I still think the dance floor may really have been on fire}.

So thank's to the crowd for paying the cover, I know what risky business that can be. Especially when it's your one night out and you're paying a sitter and you're really looking forward to an evening out. It can be very discouraging to wind up with the wrong music or the wrong place, and after a couple of those it makes you want to just stay home and rent movies. It's important to be out there supporting local, live music, hats off to you!

I'd like to also thank the Bad Boys! Man, we missed you awfully bad and are really excited to have you back! {Did I say "phenomenal"?} And thank's guys, for helping me with my very brief band history. Junior Brown at Jack's

Last Friday night, I decided to catch my first Junior Brown show at Jack's Patio Bar and Grill. A phenomenal guitarist and steel guitar player (more on this later) he is equally at home playing these old time honky-tonk songs as well as these absolutely burning Hendrix-inspired instrumentals. An equally effective singer as well, he has used that pleasing baritone of his to sing several of his hit songs such as "Highway Patrol," "My Wife Thinks You're Dead" as well as narrate the latest Dukes of Hazzard movie. And so, it was with great anticipation that I made my way out to Jack's to finally experience the man and his music firsthand.

The Mark Monaco Band

The Mark Monaco Band opened the evening with their unique mix of rock and country. Make that hard rock and country. Reminding me a lot of Cross Canadian Ragweed (the only reference I have for this style, really) The Mark Monaco Band play country music as a foundation but build up their songs with distorted guitars and riffs. Listening to their set, I was reminded of many classic rock staples such as AC/DC, Bad Company, Led Zeppelin, and countless others. And to emphasize the hard rock edge, lead guitarist Scott actually played a Les Paul through a Marshall (!) half-stack and wore a modest leather and belts wristband over his right forearm. My favorite song of the set had to have been "Bottle Rocket," a country song that was propelled by a thick bump-and-grind rhythm that reminded me of The Scorpions.

As far as complaints go, it still seems that the band is still in a jelling stage of sorts. Of course, I should play fair and mention the announcement that there was a recent addition to the band. Anyhow, they’re all great musicians but it seems that they just need a little more time to gain their footing on the way to becoming a truly powerful live act.

Junior Brown

To say that the crowd was ready for Junior Brown would have been an understatement. Fifteen, twenty minutes before show time, a small and loyal group crowded the front of the stage. Everyone else would come in once the music started, but the hardcore fans wanted to stake their place (I was to the extreme right, in front of the wall of speakers—thank lord for earphones!) During the brief setup, there were shouts and calls for Junior, and when the man himself entered with the other two members of his band (a bassist and drummer) the crowd went crazy.

The band took a quick minute or two or three to adjust their instruments, but they exuded a certain presence before they even hit a note. Everyone was dressed in fine suits and ties—oh and I have to tell you about the drummer's setup: one snare drum and one cymbal; that was all! But the drummer made that set work. Junior Brown himself was dressed in a fine, dark blue suit and wore his trademark cowboy hat. And with him he had his guit-steel—an absolutely beautiful instrument to behold.

Junior Brown & the guit-steel

A quick word about the guit-steel: It is a one-of-a-kind instrument and is a double-neck guitar of sorts. On the top, it is a standard electric guitar (well it looks and sounds like a standard electric, I have no idea about the set up) and on the bottom, it's a pedal steel guitar. Junior moves a slide(a tone bar?) up and down the neck. And with what I assume is a volume pedal, he coaxes those whining, almost Hawaiian, sounds out of the instrument, reminiscent of those classic, honky-tonk records. Anyhow, Junior Brown made some quick chatter with the crowd before the band launched into the first song of the set.

As far as highlights, there were more than plenty. "Broke Down South of Dallas" was the perfect opener with its driving early-Johnny Cash feel. In addition, he played some of his older CMT hits as well including "Highway Patrol" and "My Wife Thinks You're Dead." He even threw in an old Ranchero song as well. Honestly, I didn’t know the title, but what impressed me the most was that Junior Brown's Spanish was flawless and that he sang with so much spirit and enthusiasm. Unfortunately, the blazing instrumental (and my personal favorite), "Sugar Foot Rag" was cut short and tacked on as an introduction to "Freeborn Man." But believe me, watching Junior Brown play was more than enough to compensate for any complaints I could have had about his song selection.

Texas Special and Suzi's Birthday Bash

Kel was originally going to do this review, and she was working on it in her blog section on MySpace. Well, I checked it out and started thinking, man, she’s already done so much work on it over there, with pictures and everything. Now she’s going to have to come back and do it all over here. Too much work. So I told her to just leave it on MySpace and people can go read it over there. So go check out Kel's take on the night! Go to
http://www.myspace.com/mindlessdrizzle
and read the blog entry entitled "Friday Night - A Little Bit 'O Everything."

And, just for fun, I’ll give you my take, too! Here it is:

After talking to M’Lissa over in the forum and hearing the manager of the Elbow Room rave about how good Texas Special is, I’ve been wanting to check them out. So when Kel said, “How ‘bout dinner and some music?” I suggested Janitzio’s and some Texas Special at the nearby Elbow Room, then heading over to Rock City for Suzi’s (of Suzi’s Rock Page) birthday bash. Well, the tamales were dry, but the music was hot!

Texas SpecialTexas Special

At the Elbow Room, we met the guys in Texas Special and spoke to them for a few minutes before they went on, and if you asked Kel and me which one we thought was the singer, we would have been wrong. Because, looking at James Ponder - slender with long wavy blond hair and big innocent eyes, you just don’t expect him to start beltin’ out the blues. But that’s exactly what he did. He has one of those great low gritty bluesy voices, and enough range and versatility to pull off everything from CCR to Black Sabbath. It’s like...Robert Plant channeling B.B. King.

James PonderJames Ponder

And as good as he is on vocals, he’s even better on guitar. This dude can play! (Check him out jamming on Santana’s “Black Magic Woman” over on the Video Page.) Alternately making love to his guitar and just beating the crap out of it, fingers flying, strings bending, now and then giving it a strong bump with his knee for good measure, James churns out a steady stream of kickin’ solos. With (his brother?) Brad Ponder back there on bass, thumping away with a peaceful look on his face and psychedelic lights slowly spinning around him and Delrick providing hypnotic rhythms on drums and percussion, this band forces you to just sit back, mellow out and jam along. They definitely had us in the groove.

So much so that we had a hard time wanting to get up and leave this groove for the loud craziness over at Rock City, we were so down in it. But we finally, after waiting for M’Lissa to get there so we could meet her (Hi M’Lissa! We’ll have to come hang longer with you guys soon!), we managed to tear ourselves away and face the madness.

When we walked into Rock City Bar, Heather Leather was just finishing up their set. This band is fronted by two women on guitar, bass & vocals backed by a male drummer. If I understood what Suzi said correctly, I think they’re both somewhere around 40. That may be true, but it’s irrelevant. I’m not much of a judge on girls, but going on the reaction of the guys in the place, these chicks are hot! And rockin’! I rarely get to see a female just tearing up a guitar and it’s a great thing to see. I wish we had caught more of their show.

Heather LeatherHeather Leather

Next up was Sintense, kicking some rock-n-roll butt as always. Their set was shorter than usual, so unfortunately I didn’t get to hear all of my favorite Sintense songs. They did do my #1 fave, “Probandt,” but they changed it up some. This version was missing the thumping beats that I love so much, but it had a cool kinda psychedelic guitar solo that I really liked.

SintenseSintense

The party was really going now, with Suzi handing out prizes (we didn’t win anything) and trying to find a woman brave/drunk enough to take off her top (I don’t think she ever found one). Then Rev Jones (bassist for Michael Schenker Group), the singer and drummer from Blind Sacrifice and a great guitarist (I didn’t catch who he was) hit the stage doing some hard-rocking cover tunes and the party kicked up another notch. Rev Jones is something to watch. His head is shaved other than a high dreadlock ponytail which he whips around like a human helicopter. He’s lean, mean, covered with tattoos and charged with energy. The highlight for me (and I think some others would agree) was when Rev took the mike for Judas Priest’s “Victim of Changes.” I caught a video clip, but not the whole song, because I ran out of room on my camera’s memory card, but you can check out the clip over on the Video Page. There’s also a clip of the guitarist doing the solo from “Crazy Train” over there.

It was a great night of music, and Happy Birthday to Suzi, who knows how to throw a hell of a party!

Where you can catch em:

According to the schedule on their website, you can catch Texas Special at Kennigan’s on March 11th and back at the Elbow Room March 24th.

Sintense will be at Tiffany Billiards April 1st.

Of course, you can catch Suzi over at Suzi’s Rock Page.

Thanks Kel, I had a blast! It's been too long!
