Want To Be A Singer?

Deja Vu is still looking for a permanent replacement for Brett. Our style ranges from rock to dance. We have good connections and regular gigs at decent places, usually for more than the entry-level pay. Contact Jason Bayless at www.thedejavuband.com or look us up on myspace.com for more details about the band!

Diane on Deja Vu

from Diane:

Jason, Jason, Jason the show at Roxy's was Explosive! You guys rocked the house.

Thanks Brett, as usual you are quite simply the best. Please do not leave us......I know, I know, withdrawals can be hard but at least we know we can still catch you every once in a while.

Deja-Vu has one of the most talented and entertaining group of band members around. I was very pleased to meet the new drummer, Bam-Bam, I was impressed by his performance. He really gets in the zone and plays straight from the heart.(Definitely a great addition to the band).

Javier, (Those eyes.... aye pasote), it was great to see you up there tearing it up with some of the old band members. Jake, WOW! love that energy and that wild curly hair......keep slamming that keyboard and making the girls go wild. And of course my silent giant, Valdo, Damn Baby! you were tearing it up...save a little for later.

Come on out and party with Deja-Vu, July 7, 2006 at Main Street on Wetmore.
After the performance, it's just like great sex, you will need a cigarette.

Battle Videos

There are video clips from the Battle of the Bands up now on SA Rocks' MySpace:

http://www.myspace.com/sarocks

These are video clips from all the bands that made the semi-finals, plus the bands that headlined the semi-finals.

So for Friday, you've got Americult, Falling for Days, Harmsway, Ill Fated, Enormity, Sintense & headliners Cantina Flys.

For Saturday, there's InnerVoid, Undefyned, Remember This, Open Chapter, Dark Apathy, Reven and headliners Doctura.

So, go check 'em out. Eventually, I'll have time to get them up on the sarocks.com video section.

The bands that made it to the finals are:

Sintense, Falling for Days, Harmsway, Reven, Open Chapter & Remember This

The lineup for next Friday, June 30th is:

8:00 HARMSWAY
8:45 REMEMBER THIS
9:30 OPEN CHAPTER
10:15 FALLING FOR DAYS
11:00 REVEN
11:45 SINTENSE

Quartershackle will headline the Finals.

Feel free to leave comments wherever telling us how we f*cked up and your favorite band was cheated or how we rock and you love the bands we picked.

The semi-finals were very hard for us, as these were all the bands we already thought were great! Until this weekend, we had stuck to a basic 1-5 scale, 5 being good, etc. But this weekend, we ended up incorporating a whole bunch of .5's cuz it was all just that close! I don't think there were any numbers less than 3, and very few less than 4! All these bands were very good! We had a great time and I think they all deserve $1000 just for all the pleasure they've given us!!! I wish I could pay them!!

Also, please, if you can, come out Friday and support your local music. These guys work so freakin' hard!!! They deserve the support of local music fans!

RAM Remembered

from mysanantonio.com:

Taco Land owner remembered

Web Posted: 06/25/2006 12:00 AM CDT

Sheila Hotchkin
Express-News Staff Writer

Ramiro "Ram" Ayala, who for more than three decades presided over the city's underground music scene from a corner barstool at Taco Land, returned for good Saturday when his family scattered his cremated ashes into the San Antonio River beside the bar.

The family held the low-key funeral a year to the day Ayala died in a robbery at Taco Land. The shooting also killed doorman and Ayala friend Douglas Morgan and injured bartender Denise "Sunshine" Koger.

Ayala's wife, children and grandchildren gathered at the bar Saturday afternoon. They lit a candle on the patio and hung a wreath of red and yellow flowers, adorned with a ribbon bearing the words "Miss You Dad." A grandson, who brought an electric guitar, offered up what might be the last guitar solo performed on Taco Land's stage.

Then they gathered on the West Grayson Bridge and listened to a prayer. Ayala's wife, Agnes, poured his ashes into the water, and his children and grandchildren tossed pink and yellow roses in after them.

"He told me, 'When I die, I want to be cremated, and I want my ashes scattered in the river by Taco Land,'" Agnes Ayala said afterward. "I can see that. This is where he wanted to be. He loved his place.

"I just needed to do this, like it wasn't over until I carried out his wishes and did this for him."

Ramiro Ayala and his bar took on special significance for many in San Antonio over the decades, providing a haven for the homeless, a gathering place for all kinds of people and a stage for countless bands, from the very good to the truly awful.

Much has changed at Taco Land since the death of its gruff 72-year-old patriarch. Inside, the low ceilings, red walls and mismatched tile floor are the same. But the warped pool table is gone, as are the jukebox with its idiosyncratic music collection and the picnic tables where patrons enjoyed their longnecks.

Outside, a chain-link fence strung with yellow tape reading "Sheriff's Line — Do Not Cross" surrounds the patio.

"We called it a dive anyway," Roland de la Cruz, guitarist for los Mescaleros, said by phone Friday. "But to see it with weeds growing out, just sitting there empty, 'No Trespassing' signs ..." He paused, absorbing the strangeness of the image: "Because everybody was welcome there."

Ayala's portrait has been added to the front of the building, and a section of brick is painted white so people can add messages beneath the words: "In Memory of Ramiro 'Ram' Ayala. From Your Friends Who Love You Always Brother."

One offers this theory: "Taco Land is a state of mind. Ram is our governor."

Another says: "One more time, over and over again into eternity."

Also on display outside Taco Land is the front of the San Antonio Express-News from June 24, 2005, the day Ayala died. It recalls a happier event: the Spurs' third NBA title in seven years, won just hours before the shooting.

That night, police said, Ayala's attackers drank and played pool inside Taco Land before robbing the bar and shooting Ayala and his two employees. Fingerprints found on a pool cue matched those of Joseph Gamboa, 23, who was later identified in photo lineups along with Jose Najera, 30.

Each man is charged with two counts of capital murder and one count of attempted capital murder from that night. Both are scheduled to appear before 379th District Judge Bert Richardson on Aug. 14.

Also in court will be Ayala's wife and children, who will appear Tuesday before Bexar County Probate Judge Polly Jackson Spencer, who may at that time name Ayala's legal heirs and choose an administrator for his estate. If the Taco Land property were to be sold, the administrator would handle the details.

Bands that once played Taco Land have moved on to other places; for example, the Limelight on North St. Mary's Street, which opened months after Ayala's death.

Erik Jarvis, who books bands in San Antonio through North Carolina-based Tone Deaf Touring, said he now works primarily with another North St. Mary's venue: the Sanctuary. But Taco Land was unique, Jarvis said, and Ayala distinguished himself among club owners by being open to new things.

Ayala always seemed partial to "anything really raucous," Jarvis said.

Though more established acts played Taco Land, the bar also provided opportunities for newer bands. No demo tape was necessary; Ayala just handed band members a calendar, and they chose an open date, los Mescaleros' de la Cruz said.

"That was what was great about it — that anybody could play. Just sign up, and you've got yourself a gig," he said.

Bart Nichols, bassist for the Swindles and Los #3 Dinners, said it will be tough to find a spot as band-friendly as Taco Land, where Nichols spent some of his most enjoyable nights as a musician.

"It's real simple: The place, Taco Land, just by itself has no charm. It's not like we went there for the clean restrooms or anything," Nichols said. "It was just to be in that glow around Ram. The man was just a very warm, kind individual."

On Saturday, Agnes Ayala said her family knew much of that kindness but little else about his life at the bar.

Similarly, she said, Taco Land patrons would have been amazed if they had seen her husband — always "Ramiro" to her, never "Ram" — at home, sprawled on the rug and playing Monopoly and coloring pictures with his grandchildren.

But the family accepts both "Ramiro" and "Ram," Agnes Ayala said.

"This was his life, and he put on a show," she said. "He walked in here, and he was 'Ram.'"

As the family prepared to leave Taco Land, eldest son Manuel, 43, leaned over the side of the bridge and spotted a visible circle of his father's ashes on the river bottom.

"They didn't float," he said, amazed.

His 42-year-old brother, Ramiro Ayala Jr., came to look: "That's weird, right?"

They stared for a few seconds at their father's remains, come to rest beside Taco Land.

Concluded Manuel: "That's what he wanted."

Vallejo & Last Of Our Kind

Last Friday night I made my way out to Sam's Burger Joint to check out two bands that were stylistically different, but similar in vibe. Vallejo from Austin is a champion of the Latin Rock sound and is the consummate party band. Last Of Our Kind is a relatively new San Antonio-based band that has made giant steps in the realization of their own style and sound that is more introspective and eccentric. Whatever the styles or influences, both bands offered a night of fantastic music that made you want to dance first, ask questions later.

Driving to Sam's Burger Joint I had completely missed out on Window, the first band of the evening. At home, I hadn’t checked show times until I was fixing to get ready around 9ish—right about the time Window was set to start—and realized my mistake. I feel badly about having missed their set, especially for a review, but I’ll just have to catch them next time.

Once I had parked and re-parked (according to a security guy, cars parked in the empty lot across the street have been towed before) it was easy to see the genuine party vibe Vallejo and their fans bring to a show. Plenty of people were dressed up as if they were going to a dance club instead of a rock show, and Sam's Burger Joint was busy and buzzing with life. Of course, I'm sure that it being a Friday night didn't hurt either.

Vallejo

Onstage and on disc, Vallejo plays an infectious style Latin Rock. It's in a similar vein as, say, Mana. But what I especially liked about Vallejo's music was that it was a seamless blend of Latin Rock with funk and hard rock influences as well. Some of my favorite songs included the easy-going "Downtown" and the Chicano call-to-arms "Rock Americano," which was especially popular with the audience. Perhaps it's from their years of playing together, but the band really knows how to lay out these thick funk grooves and keep them breathing. Adding the percussion and the professionalism of the musicians (no overplaying, giving songs their space) makes for a unique style of dance music that's impossible to resist.

Last Of Our Kind

Last Of Our Kind were the final band of the evening and were eclectic, to say the least. They label themselves as an "Alternative Rock/Pop - Improvisational Jam Group" which I would say is a pretty accurate description. Although they used a similar quartet setup as Vallejo (two guitarists, bass, drums, percussionist) Last Of Our Kind were much more eccentric and subtle in execution—They have the Santana and Hendrix influences, sure, but seem to incorporate elements of flamenco and world music into their sound as well. In addition, they also have a knack for executing these gentle push/pull rhythms that really gave their songs a unique style. My favorite song of the set had to have been "Rapunzel" the perfect combination of the influences mentioned that benefited greatly from the addition of guest singer Laura Marie.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

In short, both of these bands are highly recommended for different reasons. Vallejo, with their smooth mix of Latin, rock, and funk influences make you want to party, make you want to dance, strut, jump—whatever you want you want to do. Last Of Our Kind are making a conscious effort to bring something a little different to the San Antonio rock scene. Although they are considered a rock band, their influences come from places you wouldn’t normally expect; these include acoustic, jazz and world music as well. Whatever your music preferences, both bands will be playing in or around San Antonio within the next few weeks and offer you the perfect soundtrack for the passing of a summer evening. Bring a date or a group of friends just don't go alone.

4-Fifteen at Brooks & Firehouse

from 4-Fifteen:

4-Fifteen is back at it… San Antonio's newest cover band is on the prowl. We are comprised of former members of Wall of Soul, and some guy off the street that got tired of singing in the shower. We are now more like a Wall of Hard Driving Rock...

Here’s a rundown of where we will be this weekend…

Friday – Brooks Pub (Used to be "Just One More")
3354 Lasses Blvd. Show starts at 9:30

Saturday – Firehouse Pub and Grill
5380 Walzem Road Show starts at 9:30

We've been informed we gotta keep the volume down for the gig at the Firehouse Pub. That oughtta be REAL interesting. We only know one volume level, and it ain't quiet! I have a feeling the Acoustic Guitars might be coming out of their cases Saturday Night. Could be quite the event....Marshmallows, smores, a fire and campfire songs anyone?

Amplifyd at 321 Max

from Amplifyd:

Friday June 16, 2006. 2818 N.E Loop 410

I wanted to clear up an error that I read today in The Current. Amplifyd will be playing at 321 Max, not Texas Special. Baad Newz was going to open the show, but Preston Bracy guitarist for Baad Newz got his marching orders to go to Israel. Amplifyd would like to wish him well and a safe return. We are now forced to play the whole night by ourselves and we will be playing a lot of covers that we don't normally play, so this should be an interesting show. Come on out and drink some beer and mourn that the Spurs are not in the NBA Finals. I'm thinking about bringing my championship videos and watching them to cheer us up. Show starts at 10:00pm and NO COVER!!!!!

Bombasta at Ruta Maya

from Bombasta:

BOMBASTA SPARKS ANOTHER UPRISING AT RUTA MAYA ON THE RIVERWALK

SATURDAY, JUNE 24th

The innovative and rebellious sounds of Bombasta will be returning to the stage at Ruta Maya on the Riverwalk in San Antonio on Saturday, June 24th. Bombasta helped open the venue during Ruta Maya's Grand Opening in May and is now set to return with their cultural hybrid mix of music. In their efforts to continue building a network of quality musicians and collaborators, Bombasta has asked the emerging musical group, Amenaza del Sur, to join them for an evening of music, culture and positive vibrations.

Bombasta at Ruta Maya

Bombasta mixes styles and instrumentations as effortlessly as their lyrics travel between Spanish and English. They have forged a new musical path by taking their various influences (Reggae, Cumbia, Hip Hop and Latino Funk) and have created a new sound somewhere between 'frontera rock' and 'new urban Latino.' This seven-piece musical co-op brandishes a full horn section, accordion, samples, turntables, guitar and lots of rhythm. With a strong mix of Spanglish politics and roots passion, Bombasta tackles various lyrical topics with sincerity and perspective, flowing effortlessly between syncopated rhymes and melodic anthems.

Come On Everybody Get Down With The Blues!

YouTube

Since sarocks.com was down for quite some time yesterday, I couldn't really get much work done on there. So instead, I spent some time uploading videos to YouTube. I'm going to start storing them on there instead of on sarocks.com, so I won't have to take them down as I put up new ones. So far there are 12 videos on there, and I'll be adding more as I have time. Also, I'm lightening up the darker ones as I go. I'm planning to embed them over on the sarocks.com video page soon, but until I get around to that, you can check them out at:

Johnny Drama: Sky & Starlight (sounds like a celestial weekend)

News from Mitch Webb & The Swindles

Ok, The Swindles latest newsletter is kinda long, so I'm just gonna piece together the main bits:

Thursday at Scenic Loop Cafe

It's an early show this Thursday at the Scenic Loop Cafe (7:00PM) and this one will be just Joe and Uncle Mitchy all by their lonesome. It will be a nice chance for Joe to tell Uncle Mitchy all about his miniature vacation that seemed to bring all the music in Alamo town to a standstill. It's always nice to catch up on things while being heckled from the crowd to "Play something you know."

Ok, so there aren't many hecklers at Scenic Loop, I am a liar. There is however good food and a chance to hear Webb y Reyes (that really doesn't work) on a nice deck with good food and fancy libations.

Turbo 350 at the Limelight with us on Friday!

This Friday night at the Limelight is gonna be a good one with 350 Turbo starting the night off. Just look at them! My God! How could you not show up!?! If you haven't made it out to the Limelight yet you are missing out. It is a great place to hear a band and the 350's are gonna tear it up!

New Swindles CD?

Your dreams have become our nightmares as we slowly come to fruition on 2 separate projects. The first one is called Last Band At Taco Land and will have 1 cd with about 12 or so cuts straight from the Taco Land stage. We recorded this about 5 years ago and it sounds great. Included with the cd will be a DVD with all sorts of Taco Land memorabilia, a live show and about 30 minutes of little Sarah running around Taco Land talking with everybody!

The second project we have just finished mixing and mastering which means the music part is done. I think it might be called "The Lonely Kind" It's only been a year and a half of worky worky! Very twangy! Very Country! You will either love it or hate I suppose! Just as long as we get a reaction, I'm happy! Our good friend Mike Karshis is in the midst of wrapping that one up and you will be hearing it soon.

Emergenza

Finally found out who won at the San Antonio Emergenza Finals at The Place last weekend: Nothing More. They will be going on to the State Finals in Austin on the 24th. Also, I hear Reven came in second place...not bad! Congrats to everyone!

Ruben V at Rolling Oaks Saturday

from Ruben V:

Friday the 16th we head on down to C.C. TX. to Doctor Rockit's Blues Bar where Squirrel and the gang always take good care of us. We hit the stage around 9:30 or 10 PM.

Saturday night we head to The Rolling Oaks Sports Bar and Grill here in San Antonio TX.

For those of you who stuck around for an impromptu show there Friday night thanks for the support to Rolling Oaks and to me and the boys. The show starts at 8:00 PM

Be A Blessing and I hope to see you this weekend. V

N'Somnia at Charlie Brown's Saturday

June 11, 2006

Ok, what's going on...

...let's see:

Friday I judged another qualifying round of the Battle of the Bands at Rock City, along with Suzi of Suzi's Rock Page. The lineup was Village Creep from Aransas Pass, and local bands Emporium, Ill Fated, Killing Ivy and Enormity. Another close contest, but moving on to the 2nd round will be Ill Fated and Enormity. (Judging is HARD. It would be so much easier if some of the bands just sucked, but they've all been good!)

I couldn't judge Saturday, but I just found out that Remember This and Reven will be moving on to the 2nd round from Saturday night. Congrats, guys!

Suzi has put up a review on Suzi's Rock Page of the 1st three nights of the Battle, so check that out! I won't be reviewing it, but I'll have some pics from Friday night up as soon as I get a chance.

The local Emergenza finals were held at The Place Friday night...still trying to find out who won. If anyone knows, pass it along!

Also, there is a new installment of The Guitar Zone up - "Double Your Measure" by Ernie Pena. The URL for The Guitar Zone has changed. It's now:

http://sarocks.com/guitar-zone.html

So check that out.

I'm trying very hard to get everything together and looking good over at sarocks.com. Way behind as usual. So bear with me as I work on it. Also, if you sent me a new band web site or an updated one to add to the list...I won't be updating the list on here, but all updates will be on the new list over there when I'm done. So don't think I've forgotten about you.

If I was supposed to do something else for anybody, chances are I have forgotten with all the being so freakin' busy, so you might want to email me and remind me!

What else? Oh, I haven't gotten it onto the national acts upcoming schedule thingy, but in case you haven't heard...I understand that Rob Zombie and Godsmack will be at Verizon August 26th. Also, according to KISS, Tool will have a show here sometime before October, but they didn't have any details as of yet...if anyone hears anything, let me know!

Ok, I think that's it...later!

Booking Party at the Rabbit

The White Rabbit is having a booking party Wednesday June 7th at 7:00 pm. All bands are encouraged to attend. We have recently lost contact with a LOT of bands and need to get contact information. There is not just 1 promoter that you need to talk to to play at the White Rabbit, so if you have done that in the past, you should come and talk to all of the promoters. If you are not "IN" a band, but know someone looking for shows, please pass it on. It will also be a great chance to do some networking with other bands, so bring some demos. Thanks, and we look forward to seeing everyone there.

Prototype, 10 Stick, and Deja-Vu

from Diane:

Started out Friday night to see my guys, PROTOTYPE, at Firehouse on Walzem. The heart and soul of this band is Guy and Won. Guy is now lead singer of the band (And loves to entertain the crowds) and one of the sweetest individuals you could ever get to know. Won, the greatest, hottest and sexiest drummer, always wow's me with his performance. They have a new addition to the band and his name is Joe, AWESOME bassist, a great addition to the band. Geat music and very entertaining! Check them out sometime believe me you will not be disappointed. www.prototyperocks.com

Then I was off to Legend's, on Marbach and 410, to go see my guys, Javier and Anthony, who also appear with Euphoria. The name of this band is 10 STICK and they were playing a great genre of Modern rock and Party rock. The lead singer of this band is Chris, and if I had half the energy this guy puts into his show, I could conquer the world......EXPLOSIVE. Javier, WOW! you surprised me, Bass.... you rock baby. And of course the baddest and hottest electric giutar player around... Anthony, you know I always enjoy watching you .
These guys will rock you so hard you might wake up the next day aching for your next fix. Don't worry you can find them at www.10stickrocks.com

Saturday night headed out to see my old friend , Jason of Deja-Vu at Mainsteet on Wetmore Dr. It was Brett's Farewell (Again) lol. We will miss you Brett but I'm sure we will see you in the future. The music was great a nice mix of dance and soft rock. The dance floor was crazy! The new drummer is Bam Bam. On electric Guitar, Jason, he has always taken pride in entertaining his audiences. Bass player Tony and of course the new guy on the block, lead singer from now on Andrew. Later in the evening it was like deja-vu, I turned around and there on stage was the old crew. On Bass one of the best bass players here in San Antonio, Valdo....who appears with Euphoria, he will blow you away and when he is done with you will pick you up off the floor and put you back in your chair.... he's a gentleman like that. Robert was on drums......those strong hands and that long hair, HOT, HOT , HOT, Brett and Jason it was like old times and they rocked the house. Good luck Jason with the new band you know I'll be out to see you guys again. For the ones who want to hear some soft rock and a little 70's 80's visit them at www.thedejavuband.com

Thanks, Diane!
