RE: OMG
There seems to be more and more comments like this lately. I came back from my computer problems to find quite a few comments like that. It frustrates me because here I am putting my time and money into trying to promote music in this town and then what I assume are other musicians get on here and tear down bands.
So when I saw that I felt like, why am I busting my hump to help promote bands if they're going to defeat my efforts by insulting each other? What good does it do for me to put up a post saying this band is playing at this club if someone is going to go and post a comment pretty much saying that this band sucks?
But, after a day of mulling over this and some support from friends, I have decided I won't let some peoples' sour grapes attitudes get to me. So, sorry for the pissed off post and like I said, I'm over it now.

Finally Back!!
The stupid fan went out, and of course, you can't just replace the fan evidently...you have to replace the whole power supply, so I had to wait until my guy could get the part.
Of course, because of those fun storms last night, when I got it back, I had to keep it turned off. But I'm back now!
Muchos thanks to Kel, SA Rocker & Smiling D for keeping the blog and the schedule going for me!! Sorry to everyone who emailed me announcements that I couldn't put up. I've spent most of tonight going through my mail and putting up the announcements that are still valid (as you can tell by all the announcements below!). If I've missed anything, send it to me again and I'll get it up here.
I put up as much of the schedule as I could for tomorrow, but I'm tired, so I'm going to bed. The schedule for Friday should be back to normal.
Also, I am extremely bummed to hear about the murder of Alex from Krybdus. I have never met Alex personally, but I have spoken with her on MySpace and I've listened to her awesome voice many times. Her death is a major loss for San Antonio's music scene and for anyone who knew her. She was a cool and talented chick. I hope they string that guy up by his huevos.

Murder arrest made in Krybdus singer's case

Police were looking for a missing mom.
Alexandria Countryman, 24, had not been seen since Dec. 8, when she'd attended a party at a North Side apartment. When investigators knocked on that door two weeks later, a man who lived inside and told police he's a drug dealer had an elaborate story to explain the blood pooled beneath the carpet and splattered on a wall, an affidavit for an arrest warrant said.
It was someone else's, he told police.
Trevino, 21, was arrested Wednesday and remained in Bexar County Jail without bond on a charge of murder. On Tuesday, an unidentified source led police to a decomposed body buried off Thousand Oaks Drive.
Medical examiners hadn't identified the body Wednesday, and police spokesman Sgt. Gabe Trevino said it was unclear if the body belonged to Countryman. But the victim's mother, Esperanza Carrera, said investigators told her they believe it's her daughter.
Police on Wednesday still hadn't fully investigated Luis Trevino's story, which included his insistence that two strangers murdered another man inside his apartment on the same night that Countryman disappeared.
An unknown male's DNA was found along with Countryman's in the blood inside the apartment, the affidavit said. Investigators were trying Wednesday to determine if it matched the suspect's DNA.
"People set me up," Luis Trevino told reporters Wednesday as police walked him to jail.
A motive in Countryman's apparent slaying was not clear Wednesday.
But the affidavit describes a party held at Luis Trevino's apartment that began with the host complimenting Countryman on her beauty and ended with a crude act of violence that left the singer on her hands and knees, covered with blood.
A witness told police that cocaine and Xanax were being used at the party, and that Countryman had been drinking. A witness told police she heard Luis Trevino tell Countryman "he always had a crush on her" and "how pretty she was," according to the document. Countryman was at the party when the witness left around 6 a.m.
About 7 a.m., another witness awoke to a crashing sound. He emerged from a bedroom to find blood streaming down Countryman's face and the singer struggling to get up from the floor, the affidavit said.
"We have to kill her," said Luis Trevino, holding a gun to her head, according to the witness' account in the document.
The witness picked up a phone to call an ambulance, but Luis Trevino pointed the gun at him and threatened to fire if he made the call, according to the affidavit. Luis Trevino, who weighs 330 pounds, picked up a metal chair and struck Countryman with it in the head at least five times, the witness said in the document.
Questioned by police Dec. 19, Luis Trevino told a different story.
At least one murder had occurred in his apartment, he told investigators, but two unknown men had committed it. They had arrived at the party with a third man and beat him to death, he said.
When Countryman emerged from the bathroom, one of the men hit her on the head with a beer bottle, he told police. Luis Trevino then left to buy shovels, lights and a trash bag to dispose of the man's body, according to his story.
"Trevino claimed that when he returned, (Countryman) was no longer in the apartment, and he made a vague reference to her being placed in some unknown car with some unknown person to watch her," an affidavit for a search warrant said.
Carrera said she suspected her daughter was in trouble when Countryman didn't call her grandmother on Christmas. She recalled her daughter as a former Navy seaman who gave birth to a daughter in Italy and could sing classical opera in five different languages.
"She used to do an Ave Maria that would make (former) Archbishop (Patrick) Flores weep," Carrera said.
Why someone would kill her daughter mattered little to Carrera, she said.
"My job as a mother is to find my daughter, give her a proper burial and start the healing process," said Carrera, struggling not to weep herself. "Knowing why is not going to make it any better."

This Particular Band
There is a band that is notorious in SA for stealing other bands' gigs. The first time I had to deal with this, a fairly big name in town asked me not to list their gigs and I said that my job is to do the listings, not judge the way the bands get their gigs.
Now it seems that this same band is under fire once again on this blog for what I understand is begging for gigs to the point of having another band bumped last minute.
So I put the question to you...what should my policy be toward this band? Should I penalize them for what other bands see as "Screwing"? Or should I list every band I'm aware of that is playing, no matter what their strategy?
I think that my job is listing all the gigs that I am aware of and that my responsibility is towards the fans who are looking to go out to hear a band. At the same time, I don't really want to promote a band who comes by their gigs by screwing other bands...I would love to hear some input on this...

Big Drag reunites to salute the late Taco Land founder Ram Ayala as the headliners of Ram Jam II.

Every year in March, Taco Land would host a birthday party for the club’s owner, Ram Ayala. True to Ayala’s personality, the events were informal, irreverent excuses for bacchanalian celebration.
“They weren’t really a whole lot different than any other night of the week, other than there was usually a whole lot of bottles sitting on the bar that people would bring him,” recalled Jeff Smith, legendary punk frontman (The Hickoids, Bang Gang, etc.) and Saustex Media impresario. “Normally there would be one bottle that he or a regular brought in, but on his birthday there would be seven or eight bottles sitting on the bar.”
Ayala was shot and killed in his own bar in June, 2005, a shocking tragedy that brutally slammed the door on an era for the the SA underground music scene. Immediately after Ayala’s death, various events solemnly celebrated his life. But when the time came to celebrate Ayala’s birthday in 2006, his friend Jerry Clayworth knew that the best way to honor Ayala’s memory was to push all grief aside. So he and Smith created Ram Jam, an all-day festival featuring several of Ayala’s favorite local bands. This year, they’re back with Ram Jam 2, which takes center stage at Sam’s Burger Joint on Saturday, April 14, with most of the proceeds benefiting KSYM 90.1-FM.
“Ram Jam was the first real opportunity [after Ayala’s death] to have a party,” says Clayworth, music promoter for Sam’s Burger Joint. “His birthday weekend was always famous for that, and bands loved to play it for that reason. This was purely a party — no talking about the sad stuff. We saw so many people from the earlier days at Taco Land, who we hadn’t seen in a long time, come out of the woodwork.”
After his death, many Taco Land patrons credited Ayala with bringing together the city’s creative outsiders, by providing a safe haven where they could hear and perform music unencumbered by commercial calculation. Taco Land opened its doors to punk rock in 1981, at a time when other local clubs wanted no part of it. From that point on, Taco Land was the home base for local punk, and Ayala was its beloved patriarch.
The power of Taco Land’s appeal was such that many bands never wanted to play anywhere else. Smith puts himself in that category, but suggests that Ayala’s death — while an incalculable personal loss — might have motivated local underground musicians to work harder.
“This is sad to say, and not meaning any disrespect, but I think it’s actually had a positive effect on the music scene,” he says. “Maybe the bands have aspired to a little more, rather than just playing there. It seems that a lot of venues cropped up after that point. And certainly more venues means more opportunites for more bands.
“It did alter the landscape quite a bit. Maybe it’s a classic tale of regeneration through violence, in a way. Maybe it made people more aware of seizing the opportunity to play wherever they could find it instead of taking it for granted: ‘Well, we can go play at Taco Land any fucking time.’ That sort of mentality.”
A major highlight of this year’s Ram Jam will be a rare appearance by Big Drag, one of San Antonio’s defining bands of the ’90s. According to Smith, they’ll be playing for only the second time in the last 10 years (the other occasion, not so coincidentally, was last year’s Ram Jam). At its best, Big Drag’s fuzzed-out dance-punk suggested the Ramones with a Texas accent, and the trio was a mainstay of Taco Land during some of the club’s best years.
In fact, the group’s affiliation with Taco Land enabled it to make inroads into the Austin club scene, where they quickly attained considerable popularity. Big Drag connected with various Austin groups eager to play in San Antonio, and set them up with gigs at Taco Land. In return, those bands set up Big Drag with shows in Austin.
Ram Jam 2 will also bring together the Mescaleros and local singer Suzy Bravo, and feature sets from veteran bands such as Sons of Hercules and Los #3 Dinners, in addition to Saustex Media recording artists Snowbyrd.
“We just want to carry it on in [Ram’s] spirit, and not have anything too uptight or over-the-top in terms of pretension,” Smith says. “Just have some of the bands down there that he loved and have some fun.
“I don’t think there’s too many people that ever met him that don’t carry him around with them. But I think it’s important that we remind people every once in a while, because he was a very important part of whatever music was happening in this town for a long time — when things weren’t quite as open as they are now.”

Floore's Country Store Up For National Award
The store is a local landmark that has hosted some of the biggest names in country music, including Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, and Willie Nelson, since its opening in the '40s.
Store employees said part of the charm of Floore's is its longevity and consistency.
"It hasn't changed much since then," Becca Payne, a Floore's store employee, said. "Its only had four different owners and it's still down home country. It's still what everybody expects to see when they come to Floore's. Nothing has changed."
Floore's already has a spot in the national registry of historic places.
The winner of the national award will be announced on May 15.

Rock n Rescue: Starchild Wins
Rock n Rescue is not only a music competition leading to the AT&T Summer Concert Series this summer, but it's also an awareness and fundraising effort for the City's Animal Care Services. In that regard, many people made needed donations to benefit the cats and dogs; one person donated $100 alone!
These four outstanding bands gave great performances and all deserved to win the first competition. When it was all tallied up, Starchild won the night.
The good news is, there are 12 Rock n Rescue's left and with the exception of Starchild, which is now in the running to open for a national act and receive some international exposure from AT&T, Chris Boss, M.O.B and Rev can compete again at some of the other clubs. I hope they choose to do so as they were very impressive and the crowd loved all of them!
The next Rock n Rescue is Wednesday, April 18 at Revolution Room.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE FROM ROWAN: They are still looking for more bands to play the remaining Rock n Rescue dates. E-mail me for contact information.

ALWAYS BE THE BEST THAT YOU CAN BE!
By Les Vogt
In a perfect world of justice and fairness, a poor performance by an artist could be forgotten and forgiven. But ours is not a perfect world. If it were, Arnold Schwarzenegger would never have made millions on his acting ability. In the entertainment business the reality is perception... and what people think of you counts most when it comes to success. Our world is especially fickle when it comes to entertainers.
The issue, then, isn't quite as easy as writing a "stinker" off as only one bad performance. The problem is that every weakness or questionable quality of a performer can be raised with vengeance and passed through the rumor mill like Janet Jackson's garment malfunction. And, a performer may have to go about answering those questions for a long, long time. Getting positive attention is a difficult task... so, you must always do your very best to make every performance opportunity count.
It is a mistake to take any performance for granted. Whenever you stroll out on stage and primp for pictures you leave yourself wide-open to have your posterior punted. There has been more than one headline attraction shown up big time by a lesser skilled opening act performing with sheer determination. Being gifted doesn't always win all the points when it comes to performer acceptance. An otherwise ordinary performer can develop charisma, humor and showmanship through hard work, determination and persistence. Average singers can excel by developing skills in these extended areas. An unusual vocal "style" can sometimes bring great success. Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson established superstar status with very average vocal abilities. Becoming a "stylist" in the music business can often be the core asset required to set us apart from the rest and become the catalyst that leads to a very successful career.
There are essentially no rules when it comes to the entertainment business. But, almost everything anyone could advise for or against is often disproved or reversed by superstar performers. For example, a bad stutter was turned into an asset for Mel Tillis and Don Knotts while countless other household names overcame similar obstacles to find their success. The bottom line here is that the God-given element in some of us is hidden below the surface in the heart. And, when your heart and soul get together on the same stage, anything can happen.
No matter what, don't give up. That's the first thing every successful performer tells us... so it must be true. (Ok, it's obvious if you give up, your odds go way down) What they're really saying is leave no stone unturned and continue to work, work, work at your craft.

Band Review GTB
I stepped out a few weeks ago looking for something new and came across this 3 piece band playing at Martini Ranch on West Avenue. The name of the band is GTB, Get The Belt, I was pleasantly surprised in the depth of this small band. We had Leo on electric, great guy, on bass we had Pete Perez who actually had played with, and from what I understand still makes an appearance with RIOT every once in a while. Rene was on drums, you animal, I love people who just live for the moment, enjoy life and and are not affraid to laugh out loud. They also had a special guest, her name was Natalie Bowen, this young lady got the dance floor warmed up for the rest of us.There were a few technical difficulties but they handled it like pros and kept the show rolling.
This band is very entertaining, so when they come to a place near you take the time to go and check them out, you will not be disappointed. ROCK ON GUYS!

Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes
You can now add your gigs to the calendar yourself. Just go to sarocks.com and click on the Schedules tab. There, underneath the nightly schedule (you may have to scroll down), click on "Add Item to Schedule."
You will be taken to a page with a simple form on it. Just enter the band(s) that will be playing, the URL of your band's web site or MySpace page (only one URL can be entered), the name of the club/venue you will be playing at, the address of the venue, the date, time and any additional info. (I believe all fields are optional, but you need to at least list the band, venue and date for the entry to be valid. Any less and I'll have to delete it for not making sense.)
THIS IS IMPORTANT: At least for now, the format for the date is yyyymmdd, so today, April 2nd, would be 20070402. And the format for the time is military with seconds, hhmmss, so 9:30pm would be 213000. Just remember, if it's PM, add 12. Like 1:00 pm would be 1+12=13, so it would be 130000.
Also, you can't edit your listings. Only I can. So if you make a mistake or if a change is needed, you'll just need to shoot me an email and I'll change it for you.
Please list ONLY shows taking place in San Antonio and nearby areas, like San Marcos or Helotes, but not Austin or Corpus, etc. Listings for other cities will be removed.
I'm hoping this will help make the calendar more complete and make it easier for bands to make sure their shows get listed. The more input sarocks gets from the local music community, the more successful the site will be in doing its job, I think, which is to promote local music.

Also, I should have done this earlier, but I want to welcome a new member to the blog: SA Rocker!! I whined recently on the forum about needing some help with this thing, and SA Rocker stepped up and offered to help out. It's great to have someone else helping me keep up with what's going on around here!
Thanks and welcome, SA Rocker!! You rock!

---------------------------------
Also, just want to mention that, while I was taking a break from the schedule, I kinda took a break on most other things around here. (Ok, the new expansion pack for The Sims 2 came out...it's Seasons, and it's cool...they can get struck by lightning and make snowmen and turn into PlantSims and shit...but I digress.)
Anyway, a short break was nice, but I'm back in business now and will get back to updating the band list and venue list and writing that review from weeks ago that I never got done, and maybe even the CD reviews that I was supposed to do a long time ago...well, I'm gonna try to do all that, anyhow!
Rock & Rescue: AT&T and Local Music to Aid the City's Animal Care Services
Rock & Rescue features three to four local bands each night, competing for a grand prize to be awarded by AT&T. The San Antonio-based communications giant is also the title sponsor of a summer concert series which will feature national music acts. Details on where the concert series will be held and what acts will appear will be announced after Fiesta. Meanwhile, the top four bands from the Rock & Rescue competitions will appear during the AT&T Summer Concert Series.
All of this music will help to raise awareness and money for Animal Care Services as it begins a five year program to transition it’s facility into a no-kill shelter.
Today, for the first time, the local media was given the opportunity to see the progress that’s been made. The new 38,000 square foot, campus-style ACS facility is located on the southwest side of San Antonio. When its completed later this summer, the ten buildings will include increased kennel capacity for dogs and adoption space; a cattery adoption area with space for 210 felines; a 45-square foot cat condo in the administration building lobby; a medical clinic for onsite spay/neuter procedures; ‘get acquainted’ yard and other assets.
Rock & Rescue is dedicated to saving the lives of dogs and cats one song at a time. The music competitions will see donations being collected for Animal Care Services while the AT&T Summer Concert Series should result in thousands of dollars added to the City’s coffers.
The first Rock & Rescue is scheduled for Thursday, April 5th at Karma at 8123 Broadway, the second Rock & Rescue will be held at the Revolution Room, also at 8123 Broadway, on April 18th. Additional live music clubs are being added each day.
That was the official press release. Here's some more info for bands:
The top four local bands will open for the national acts at the Sunken Gardens Theater. The top band out of the final four will receive international exposure through AT&T and it's Blue Room.
Bands that are interested in playing, contact me (Rowan) and I'll put you in touch (I don't like posting people's email addresses on here...don't want to contribute to their email spambox.) It doesn't cost anything except to play a 15 to 20 minute set for the judges and the audience. A plug and play audio system will be provided.
