Remember the Alamo concert DVD release

Remember The Alamo, a limited-edition DVD featuring headlining musical performances filmed at The Alamo, available NOW…exclusively in San Antonio to benefit The Alamo

Limited-edition DVD made available in the San Antonio market before it hits theaters and national DVD release; portion of proceeds from DVD sales benefit The Alamo Wow Music Group, through its Wonders of the World music series, announces the release of Remember The Alamo—an exclusive, limited-edition DVD featuring the groundbreaking May 2005 concert filmed at The Alamo with performances by Lyle Lovett, the Gipsy Kings, Los Lobos, the Arc Angels, and Paul Rodriguez. Only 5000 of these limited edition DVDs are available for sale exclusively in the San Antonio market—1500 at The Alamo gift shop, and 3500 online at www.wowmg.com or by phone at 1-800-WOW-5033. Remember The Alamo retails for $19.95 at The Alamo and $24.95 online or by phone.

Later this year, plans call for the Remember The Alamo concert to air in its entirety in movie theaters across the country and on a national television broadcast, as well as for Remember The Alamo DVDs—minus the bonus features on this limited edition version—to be released for sale nationwide through major retailers.

The Alamo will receive a portion of sales proceeds from all DVDs sold, both through the limited edition available exclusively in the San Antonio market now, as well as from every DVD sold through its nationwide release.

The Remember The Alamo concert was designed to pay tribute to the Alamo and the City of San Antonio through an entertaining, made-for-history musical event. The DVD, via performances by some of the world’s best-known artists and light-hearted comedic entertainment by Paul Rodriguez, retells the story of the 13-day battle that took place in 1836, thus solidifying the Alamo shrine as an historical wonder of early American culture.

The 90-plus minute DVD includes a documentary about the Alamo and an historical tour of the shrine led by Alamo Director David Stewart.

“We are thrilled with the end result of this DVD and are excited about the exposure that the Alamo and San Antonio will receive as a result of this product,” said Virginia Van Cleave, Chairman of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Alamo Committee. “Merging musical entertainment of this caliber with the history of the Alamo provides us with an innovative way to reach existing and new audiences to share the message of courage and sacrifice for the cause of Liberty that the Alamo Defenders so bravely represented.”

The spirit, sights, and sounds of San Antonio also were captured during the DVD’s filming and are interspersed throughout the broadcast through shots and commentary about sites and events such as the Riverwalk, the Menger Hotel, and Fiesta.

Bonus features available only on the limited-edition DVD include interview footage with Lyle Lovett, the Gipsy Kings, Los Lobos, the Arc Angels, and Paul Rodriguez.

Remember The Alamo was filmed in San Antonio on May 2, 2005 as part of WOW Music Group’s Wonders of the World Music Series—a collection of concerts that unites performances by distinguished musical artists with the world’s most storied historical sites. Produced and filmed in High Definition (HD) and 5.1 Surround Sound, the Wonders of The World Music series also includes a concert at the Great Wall of China, with future concerts planned at sites that include the Grand Canyon, Eiffel Tower, Tiananmen Square, Gorky Park, Egypt’s Pyramids, and Mt. Rushmore.

To purchase the limited-edition Remember The Alamo DVD, visit the Alamo’s gift shop at 300 Alamo Plaza, log onto www.wowmg.com, or call 1-800-WOW-5033.

Download Of Montreal's Jan 21 SA show

copied from a forum post:

This will definitely interest those who were lucky enough to see Of Montreal's Jan 21 show at the White Rabbit, and Of Montreal fans (or just fans of good new music) who didn't get a chance to see it can hear it in all its glory, if you are willing to spend a minute of your time with a game...

From Funeral Pudding (http://funeralpudding.blogspot.com):

The Game Of Of Montreal will begin Feb. 1st. It will be an online Of Montreal scavenger hunt with clues allowing you to download parts of their entire recent San Antonio performance, recorded strait off the soundboard (with permission), including their incredible cover of David Bowie's "Moonage Daydream", which can also be found at Funeral Pudding right now and which (along with "Bunny...") you are more than welcome to download and host on your own site (or link to my post). Preceding the Game an interview with Kevin Barnes, BP and Jamey from Of Montreal will be posted. Feel free to mention The Game Of Of Montreal on your site (and realize I am ad and paid-link free, doing this for fun) or simply play along in the comfort of your own home.

Best regards,
Funeralpudding

RIP Darrell Shipp of Celebrate Tuesday

from mysa.com:

Army Pfc. Darrell Wayne Shipp, 25, had high octane in his blood and was the proud parent of one baby — his car.

He drag raced at the San Antonio Speedway and on public roads, most recently in his beloved 2000 black Ford Mustang. He played bass guitar in a punk band at Sam's Burger Joint and the White Rabbit.

When heavy rain turned the Iraqi ground to mud, he relished pounding through the rough terrain in a Bradley Fighting Vehicle, and when it was broken down, a Humvee.

Shipp was in a Humvee when a roadside bomb killed him Wednesday in Baghdad, casting a pall of grief and short bouts of anger among friends and relatives in San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley.

His mother, Regina, who works at a Kmart, said from the family's home here that she blamed President Bush for his death and "for everybody that has been killed."

"He needs to show up at our son's funeral service and everyone else's so he would know how he is hurting families," said his father, Doyle, a mechanic.

Shipp was their only son. His experiences and interests were on display around their home, including a racing trophy and a clock beside the computer in the living room that had a little sign next to it: "Iraq Time."

His parents frequently corresponded with him by Internet and Webcam.

"I was on the computer every night talking to him. I'd be up until 4," his mother said. "If he wasn't online, I'd be waiting for him to be online."

Shipp grew up in and around the Alamo City, attending school in Marion and at Roosevelt High School before finishing in Harlingen in 2000.

After graduation, he moved back to San Antonio and was a used-car salesman and manager of the meat department at an Albertson's grocery. Before he joined the Army in 2005, he was a waiter at an Olive Garden restaurant off U.S. 281.

"He thrived under stress. He would laugh at it and had fun," said Jimmy Smith, 24, one of Shipp's best friends in San Antonio and a fellow band member of the group Celebrate Tuesday.

It's unclear why he signed up for the military, but one of his four sisters, Donna Rosales, who is in the Army Reserve and may go overseas soon, said it changed him for the better.

"I think it did him some good," said Rosales, 23. "He grew up a lot, thinking about his life, thinking about his future."

Apparently he had plans to continue racing. A high-performance clutch that he'd ordered off the Internet from Iraq had arrived in the mail earlier this week and was in a box on the living room floor of his parents' home. Scheduled for leave in a couple of months, he wanted to supercharge the engine.

"He thought there was nothing better than scaring the crap out of someone," said Smith, who trusted Shipp as a driver and described him as "one in a million, not because he was my best friend, but because he was."

The two used to race the turnaround at Loop 1604 and Nacogdoches. Family and friends said he rarely lost, except for one race with the Harlingen police shortly before he deployed in October.

Smith, who was in the car that night, said a Trans Am pulled up beside them and the driver wanted to run. They screamed to repeated starts and stops for about eight traffic lights.

"The brakes were smoking, and the clutch was smoking, but we won," he said.

When a patrol car emerged, "we thought we got away from them, but they radioed to someone else," Smith said.

Shipp spent the night in jail. Shortly after, on his birthday, he was hugging his family goodbye as he left for Iraq.

His father recalled that moment, standing near his kitchen counter covered with photographs and a brief casualty report that gave few details about the death.

"I just remember him right here," he said, reflecting on that last hug, eyes welling. "I didn't think he was ever gonna turn loose. He just kept hugging and hugging and crying, and then I started to cry."

Bombasta Performs at Luna

BOMBASTA PERFORMS at LUNA FINE MUSIC CLUB

Saturday, January 20th
Special Birthday Bash Performance For
Bombasta Frontman: EL ROBOTICO 2012
With Guest Performance by AZUL

Local Spanglish mix masters, Bombasta, will be performing for the first time at the critically acclaimed Luna Fine Music Club on Saturday January 20th for a special performance celebrating the birthday of Bombasta frontman: El Robotico 2012. Bombasta's performance at Luna marks a broadening of format at the traditional jazz club and illustrates Bombasta's wide appeal among the local community. Joining El Robotico 2012 and Bombasta on stage, will be special performances by songstress Azul and her recently formed backing band. The night's festivities will begin around 9PM with alternating sets between Azul and Bombasta, as well as the addition of guest performers throughout the night.

Bombasta's loyal fanbase has been invited to join El Robotico in "celebrating another year in this game of life" in attempts to further dissolve the barrier between performer and audience. In a recent interview, El Robotico stated, "I think of all of mi gente that have supported my past efforts as mi familia. Each person that attends a Bombasta show gives me the drive in my life to continue attempting to do the most with this small gift of music that I've received. I can't think of a better way to start off my new year, than to be surrounded by my family, my friends and this community of positive people. This is why I am a musician."

Through Bombasta's continued travels, performing their unique and intelligent mix of Spanglish reggae and conscious cumbia/hip hop, they have formed close relationships with many in the music, art and activist communities. Saturday's performance will serve as an opportunity for these communities to come together to help celebrate one of San Antonio's unique, outspoken and creative individuals, El Robotico 2012. Visit the band's websites at www.bombasta.com or www.myspace.com/bombasta; for band bios, press clippings, fan postings, images, etc. or at Luna's website at www.lunalive.com.

Show starts at 9PM; 21+; $6 Cover

El Robotico 2012 Bio:

Bombasta frontman, El Robotico 2012, is a San Antonio native, born and raised on the Southside. His musical career spans over 15 years of songwriting and innovation. A graduate of Southwest High School, he spent most of his formative years playing the night clubs of Austin while attending Texas State University in San Marcos, where he was an active member of M.E.Ch.A. (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán) an experience that would later impact much of his political lyrical content. He returned to his home town of San Antonio in 2003 and formed the group Bombasta, a hybrid mixture of many influences, including Hip Hop, Reggae, Cumbias and Latino Funk. As a guitarist, he has held his own performing alongside musicians in Austin, New York's Greenwich Village and the Southside blues bars of Chicago. Beyond playing guitar, El Robotico is a talented lyricist and singer, tackling themes of social justice, Chicano politics and varied calls for peace and unity. He is also a multi-instrumentalist, known to lead Bombasta on accordion, turntables, guitar and vocals, continuously striving for mixing the traditional with the innovative- creating a fresh new sound in the process.

In addition to being one of San Antonio's most promising musicians, El Robotico has spearheaded efforts to unify San Antonio's musical community through his critically acclaimed series of events entitled Barrio Massive, a collaborative effort between Bombasta, other regional Latino musical acts, poets, dancers, activists and vendors, an act which left San Antonio with some of the most memorable performances of 2006. He is also a DJ, who previously released an EP of cumbia/hip hop mashups entitled "El Nuevo Chicano" and has DJ'd various nightclubs and parties throughout San Antonio and Austin. In addition to being a band leader, musician, DJ and promoter, El Robotico is also a dedicated husband and father, gaining a reputation as being one of the hardest working people in the local music community.

"A Fusion of Acoustic Sounds Night with Azul":
Throughout the night, the band and I will take the listeners through the basis of my roots, my musical and cultural roots not only as Mexican but as an international listener: Latin American sounds, Blues, African sounds, hints of Jazz, songs from Cuba, Peru, Argentina, Spain, Mexico, etc., all of this as a mixture between original material and traditional songs that sustain the fusion of acoustic sounds from the world. Each part of the night has its own “vibe” with various guest musicians contributing to the night. Most of the night the core of the band and I will be on stage, although I will perform certain songs on my own.

Ruben, E Muzeki and Enchiladas

Back in July, I had a major craving for some super-greasy super-tasty enchiladas, and asked for enchilada advice on the forum. Saturday I finally got a chance to take some of the advice I received. Thank you, David C, for recommending Casbeers. Awesome enchiladas! I could only eat two. The enchiladas are so smothered in chili and cheese, you can barely find the damn things. Just what I was looking for!

As a bonus, I got to hang out with Kel, Carlos, Denise, Michael and another lady whose name escapes me at the moment (sorry!). Good company!

As an added bonus, I got to once again experience a little Ruben V. Can't get too much of that! I've already reviewed Ruben on here before, so I won't say much. Great blues rock guitarist and singer. They did an awesome cover of The Beatles' "Golden Slumbers." I really enjoyed that!

I also got to talk with Ruben a little and learn a bit about what brought him from the heavy metal dude I remember from Corpus to the bluesman he is today. Interesting story, but I won't tell it. Not my story to tell. I couldn't tell it like he did anyway.

One little beef with Casbeers, though. It's kinda messed up, when people have been there for an hour eating and drinking, to suddenly come up and charge them a cover charge. We paid it, because we figured the money went to Ruben, but we thought it was a little tacky. Also, the guy ripped me off. The cover was supposed to be six dollars; I gave him a ten and he only gave me 2 dollars back. But that's ok! Whatever, man.

I had planned to go with Denise and Michael up to the Lion and Rose for the Ren gathering they had going on up there. So, after a while, I headed over there. E Muzeki was playing. I have also reviewed them before, so I won't say much about them either. Just that if you enjoy world music, like Celtic, Greek, etc., you should really check them out. It's beautiful music. My favorite song they do is a version of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir," but if they did it Saturday night, it was after I left and I didn't get to hear it. Ah well...

I'd never been to the Lion and Rose before. Very nice British pub atmosphere, very crowded...I swear I saw Elvis at the bar, lol!

I didn't take my camera with me, as the batteries were dead, but my friends did send me some of E Muzeki, so here you go:

One last thing, in case E Muzeki reads this: I AM going to do a review of your CD (and others that I have), I PROMISE!! I just need to get caught up first! And I will, one of these days!! I swear! (Anyone have a cloning machine?)
