Papawood this weekend!

Solitude at Billy D's

Reasons to support local bands

(From newsgroups)

Local Music vs. “Bigtime”
1. A typical rock concert costs $40. For $40 you can see 5-8 local shows or probably two very cool outdoor festivals for that price
2. You can see the bands and stage better at a bar than at a concert
3. You usually don't pay for parking, and sometimes there's no cover either. If you do decide to leave, it'll make you no never mind anyhow.
4. Probably no traffic jams to deal with
5. Food is better and cheaper
6. Dance floor
7. You'll make more friends locally.
8. You can meet the band and talk with them a little bit. They don't mind that you have a camera, and they certainly don't mind if you want to buy them a drink. You can tell them what you thought of their music, too, and be heard. For what that's worth.
9. You can sometimes buy a very cool cd that no one else has and it costs a lot less than at a store.
10. You can sometimes get a cool t-shirt for half the price

If you like having parties, going to see local bands at the clubs and bars is the way to go. You get to hear four hours of music, and you'll find a band that fits right in with what you and your friends enjoy hearing.
1. Go to see a local band whose style appeals to your musical tastes. Check these websites for schedules and decriptions of bands of various musical genres.
2. While you are at the show, if you have a good time, buy a CD from the band that you liked and proceed to step 2. If you don't have a good time, go back to step 1.
3. Say hello to the band members, tell them it was a good show if you thought so. If you're like me, you'll wait 'til you're asked, and if you didn't think it was that great, you can tell them so in a nice way. Safest is to say nothing if you didn't like it, they get the hint.
4. If you like the CD, tell your friends to go see the band to buy one, or order one from their website.
5. If your friends liked the CD, get your friends out to see the bands
6. Don't be obnoxious
7. Book them, promote them if you have a website, follow them around, and let them know you luv 'em. If you want to keep them playing locally, that is. Tell anyone who is looking for a band to play, you got just the bunch.

Image is everything - press kits and merch

Music shouldn't be about image. It should be about the quality of the music and performance. Unfortunately, that is not the reality.

In the music industry, image plays a key role to each bands success. If you want to be successful, then every single aspect of the band has to portray that image. You should know your target market and the type of image that you want to portray and put that forth in all your performances, merchandising and press releases.

This is especially important in putting together your press kits and artist merchandising. The Artist Press Kit (Demo Package) Press Kits are used a lot in the music industry. Not only are they sent to record labels in hopes of getting signed but they are also used when trying to get on a tour, pick up a manager, or let the media know who you are. It's the first impression people in the music industry will get of your band.

Things your Press Kit should include:
  1. Band Biography - Keep it short. Who you are and what's going on with the band. No more then one page. Preferably have an English major write it up for you.
  2. Band Photography - 8" x 10" is Standard. The picture should be professional looking. Your promo shot should also encompass the essence of the band and the image you're going for. If you're short on money talk to photography majors at your local art institute.
  3. Press Clips/Achievements - This should include all notable achievements. This includes chart positions, number of CDs sold, big bands you have opened for, number of downloads, City and States you have toured in etc. No more then one page.
  4. CD - Should be as professional looking and sounding as possible. You only get one chance to make a good impression and you don't want to blow it with a studio demo in a paper sleeve. Again if you need help with this I am sure you can get some help from an Art Student.

Merchandising

Band Merchandise is part of the image you give to your fans, and in a lot of cases where the band will make most of its money. Many popular bands on labels actually make more money from merchandise sales then they do from CD sales.

You should try and get a wide range of items to sell. Stickers and buttons with your bands logo and at least 3 different shirt designs. Change your shirt designs with each new album release and every few months if you are actively touring. Shirt designs should also be along the same lines of the bands image.

For some ideas on shirt designs you can browse some of the label stores.

Sell your merchandise at all your shows, bands website and online stores like www.smartpunk.com and www.interpunk.com.

Johnny Drama takes over Revolution Room

WOW!!! That's the word that I can use to describe all that we went through this past weekend. I tell you what, whomever scheduled three nights in a row for us should be SHOT!! Oh wait that was me ... scratch that. Despite running ragged on Sunday, we had a great time all three nights. We were really glad to see so many of you come out and join us all three nights. Thanks so much for that. The Falls, Broadway Bar and Wise Guys were rockin' this weekend to the tunes of Johnny Drama.

We met some new friends along the way and we want to welcome them to the JD family. Of course we can't forget the party people in the front table at Wise Guys on Saturday night. They have come to us all the way from New York, via Iraq. They are members of the US Army and they just got back from their tour in Iraq and are now stationed at Ft. Sam Houston. They were great people and awesome to hang out with. Can't wait to see them out with us again this Saturday night. Speaking of which ...

This coming Saturday is our only show this week as we try and rest and recoup. We've all been sick the last few weeks so this rest will do us some good, yet I digress. We're going to be breaking in a new place for Johnny Drama this Saturday night, March 31st, and that would be The Revolution Room or Rev Room as some call it. It's located at 8123 Broadway. It's right in the heart of the Broadway Strip inside loop 410. We hope that you can all come out and see what this place is all about. It's a party central, so to speak, because of all that they have going on in there. Come check it out and help us show them how we like to party in the JD nation.

Preparing A Professional Promotional Package... Part 2

By Les Vogt
Part 2: The Contents

Always Remember... you never get a second chance to make a first impression. You owe it to yourself to assemble a promotional package that tells them you're a professional!
A promotional package, or press kit, is generally designed to provide the recipient with enough material to make an assessment of your abilities. Different versions of your promo package will include materials suited for different recipients such as agents, producers, promoters, venue operators, newspaper columnists, radio programmers, or record company representatives, etc. A typical promo/press kit contains the following components:
* An Artist Biography
* Fact Sheet
* Promotional Photo
* Reprints of Press "Clippings"
In addition, it's not unusual to include a song list, lyric sheet, gig sheet, and reports of any successful performances or special events. These items should always be accompanied by a CD "demo" and/or a performance video packaged in protective wrap, along with a personalized cover letter. Tribute and celebrity lookalike artists should always include a video sample. After all, if you are emulating a famous artist, you must show that you can deliver the essence of the character on stage.
The goal of a promo/press kit is twofold: The factual information within must be sufficient for journalists to base an article or review upon, while the editorial content of the artist's biography leaves enough room for a certain element of hype. Above all, the end result of any promotional package is to generate interest for the artist. This package serves as your personal salesman pitching "the performer of the day"... you!
For a more established act, a promo package is a compilation of existing reviews, write-ups, interviews, and such... basically, a representation of the overall history of the performer. In this case, its purpose is more likely to promote a new show, a new tour, or perhaps to put a new spin on the artist's public image... maybe even an attempt to completely overhaul an image. For the yet-to-be discovered act, the promo package is much different... rather than compiling reviews and interview clippings, the mission is to generate some of those write-ups. It is more of a promotional tool that is used to get bookings, radio air-play, reviews, and to "shop" for the big prize every hungry artist is looking for... that elusive recording contract.
Let's assume you are still trying to get established, and the reviews from the "Eagles Club Valentines Party" don't exactly look awe-inspiring on the printed page. How can you possibly hype yourself in the same manner as bigger acts with a bag full of glowing reviews and media support?
Forget the concept of hype for a moment. Like every other aspect of your career, there is plenty of room in your promotional presentation for sheer, unadulterated hype... and, believe me, we'll cover that in the future. However, in the first stages of your professional life, the simple task of getting out the raw information is absolutely crucial. This may be an entirely new way of thinking, compared to the "must be on stage all the time... must be a master showman" mentality. But, you'll be better served to think of yourself more as a newscaster than a talk-show host when trying to launch a career or initiate a new project that steps out of your usual environment.
Yes, the general public responds to hype... cheap gimmicks, fads, huckster-style imagery, and relentless horn blowing. For a lot of performers, these are the key components of a successful rise to the top (musical talent be damned). I'm all for it... bring on the sideshow... rock me baby! Unfortunately, the general public isn't your target just yet. It is more often the jaded, "seen-it-all" music business professionals you need to attract at this stage. That's not to say that everyone who receives your promo package is entirely immune to hype tactics, but you won't be able to fool the professionals into believing you're "the next big thing" based on your biographical skills alone.
Nearly everyone at every level of the music business is constantly bombarded with press releases, gimmicks, or the latest "hot new act" bulletins crafted by some of the best advertising specialists in the country. That sort of hype is unstoppable, unbeatable, and totally numbing. How many glowing magazine reviews, radio and television profiles, or internet messages, etc. have you seen and heard lately? Now, put yourself in the position of someone who is immersed in this hype machine for a living... like an agent, promoter, journalist, disc jockey, or even the local club operator. It'll be very difficult to get noticed amidst all the noise from the big money promotional machines out there! The good news is... they're all hoping to find a new, super talent just waiting to be discovered. It'll be your job to create a package that catches their eye without going over the top. You need to get them to choose your package from the pile... if nobody looks inside, you don't stand a chance.
At the end of it all... you'll need to blow somebody away with your ability in order to get any substantial results. Always be the best that you can be and understand where you belong in the overall scheme of things. Don't expect a large casino entertainment director to jump at the chance to book an act more suited for the Eagles Club circuit.
The ideal promotional package contains just a few professionally printed pages (as suggested at the beginning of this article) with an actual 8x10 glossy photo (or two) tucked into a glossy custom folder with your simple embossed logo on the front. Absolutely avoid the use of any re-cycled promo folders or laser printed photo duplicates from the Quick Print shop on the corner. This is, indeed, the music business, and that's exactly how you need to approach the preparation of your press kit or promotional package. You're not selling CD's or tee-shirts to music industry contacts... you're hoping to enter into a professional arrangement with them. You should try to look as professional as possible. Your promotional package must tell them you're a "class act" that cares about your image. Pay attention to professionalism... you'll be rewarded down the road.

Get Better Results With A Distinctive Promo Package

(Some interesting advice from the professionals)

By Les Vogt

Developing A Logo

You need to alert people that you're a professional that cares about your image. That's what good publicity materials will do. All your promotional materials should be professionally printed and reflect an instantly recognizable logo...

A logo is a symbol, a graphic message that tells people at a glance that they are reading about you. A logo may be as simple as your initial set in distinctive typeface, or it may be a more complex design incorporating a photo, silhouette or elements of your music, your name or personality, or even a distinctive slogan.

The logo is a shorthand way of identifying yourself... just as, at a glance, you recognize PBS, ABC, CBS, or NBC from their corporate symbols. Since this logo will be used on all your publicity materials, and, hopefully you'll be using it for years, spend enough time and money to be sure it represents you as well as possible.

A good logo is simple. The simpler your logo is, the more memorable it will be and the more it will stand apart from all the others. Here are some guidelines...

1. Your goal is to devise an emblem - a symbol that will be recognized at a glance on your envelopes, business cards, perhaps even T-shirts and stickers for instrument cases. Resist the temptation to add busy details, elaborate curlicues, or complex designs. Stay away from typefaces that are hard to read, no matter how "creative" they appear. People won't take the time to figure out an illegible script or slogan.

Use a pad and pencil and your imagination to brainstorm the idea of a symbol for you and your image. Does, your name give you ideas? Think about the parts of your name. Would just a first, or last, name do? It worked for Elvis, Cher, and Pavarotti. Johns or Susans, however, should probably look a little further than this.

What about using just your initials? That's certainly simple, and, with the right graphic touch, it might provide a memorable logo. It worked for CCR, BTO and ELO... even one letter with a curlicue underneath might be effective.

2. If you already have an established name, you still need to work on developing a logo. A rock artist will probably want to be more energetic, hip and trendy... perhaps even with an icon-style approach. Use your image idea sheet and consult with others to come up with the logo. Bands should brainstorm as a group to devise an appropriate logo. An identity can sometimes be difficult to pin down. Work on this until you're satisfied that your logo design represents the spirit of your personality or group. Don't rush this task no matter what... or you'll regret it later.

3. Show business is filled with strong graphic elements, and if you can find one that accurately reflects your own performance, make it part of your logo. Consider the graphic possibilities of a black & white keyboard, the music staff, and the shapes of most instruments... perhaps the gentle curved lines of a guitar, stand-up bass, or saxophone will trigger an idea for your logo. A close-up view of a microphone, spotlight, or almost any tools of the trade can bring interesting graphic possibilities.

4. Every printer has a supply of standard symbols and may suggest using one of them on your printing for a small fee... possibly even for free. If you let them talk you into that out-dated, mediocre keyboard on your business card, you'll look just as mediocre as the thousands of other piano players who've used the same symbol. Don't take the quick and easy way when you're working on your logo. Spend whatever time and money it takes to professionally reflect your image and your talents.

Work on you logo design until you're really pleased with it. Then put it aside. Come back in a week or two and take a fresh look. If you still like it... go ahead and produce it. If it just doesn't look or feel right, go back to the drawing board. You are special and your talent is unique. Your logo should reflect your uniqueness. Work on it until it is perfect... you'll be pleased that you did!

Alter Ego: Brett's Birthday at Helotes Sports Plex (aka "Brett Fest")

Azul: Sor Juana Preview at Carmens

Local artist Azul was recently honored by an invitation from Jorge Valdivia, Director of Performing Arts from the National Museum of Mexican Art, Chicago, to share the stage with Lila Downs (2007 Grammy Winner) and Magos Herrera and to open the National Sor Juana Festival that takes place in Houston on March 25th.

“The National Sor Juana Festival: A Tribute to Mexican Women” is a multidisciplinary festival which honors one of Mexico’s greatest writers, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, an exceptional 17th Century Mexican nun who valued the education of women. Sor Juana was a celebrated playwright and poet in her own time and considered to be the first feminist of the Americas. Through this unique festival, we celebrate the legacy of Sor Juana and pay tribute to the rich artistic accomplishments of Mexican women from Mexico and the United States. The festival events include film, music, dance, theatre and literature.

Azul's Participation:

The core of the band is comprised of Carlos Treviño n(lead acoustic and electric guitars), James Moody (drums), Brandon Rivas (upright bass) and Azul (lead vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, jarana). Guests include Maya Guirao (acoustic guitar, jarana) and Jai Lopez (on cajon and percussions).

NOTE OF INTEREST: The jarana is a small 8-string guitar Azul is showcasing from the Gulf Coast of Mexico. (She will be teaching this instrument at the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center in San Antonio in the near future).

There will be a presentation of this show here in San Antonio on Saturday the 17th of March at Carmen's de la Calle.

Heaven and Hell Live in SA

According to Pollstar, Heaven and Hell, the Black Sabbath offshoot made up of Ronnie James Dio, Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi and Vinny Appice, is playing here in San Antonio at Verizon Wireless on May 1st. So all you Sabbath and Dio fans better get your tickets! Hell, buy me one while you're at it! (Just kidding...sorta.)

N'Somnia at 321 Max & Charlie Brown's This Weekend Plus Fundraiser for Rick Info

from N'Somnia:

N'SOMNIA is back to working both nights this coming weekend.

Friday night, March 9th we'll be at 321 MAX

and

Saturday night, March 10th, we'll be at Charlie Brown's

if you have never eaten at Charlie Brown's then you're really missing out. They offer a tenderloin that will melt in your mouth, it's so tender and tasty. Their nachos are really good too - I usually have both before the evening is over. I understand their hamburgers are pretty good as well. Wish all the clubs did this. I love live music and great food!

Jeff got to go and visit with Rick for awhile last night and came home saying he really looks good. Rick was happy for the company and he even played a little keyboard while Jeff played one of his string instruments. Rick is anxious to get back to the band but we have told him all in due time. His health is much more important to us right now. He still needs all our prayers as he continues to recover. We just can't wait for him to get better and get back on stage. I, for one, could use a Jethro Tull fix. We are holding a benefit for him on April 15th (Sunday) from 8 to midnight...lots of prizes are to be auctioned off. We could also use gifts, donations so if you have anything please let us know. Please be sure and mark your calendars to attend.

Suzi & Toni's Birthday at Tiffany's

Suzi sent me a flyer to post about this, but it came out all messed up cuz evidently she used some fonts I don't have and Photoshop didn't like it. But here is the email she sent me so you can get the gist of it:

Just wanted to remind you that next Friday is my BD party with The Edge Magazine( Toni's BD is 2/25) and it is also the 100th edition party of The Edge. We are having it at Tiffanys Sports Bar. The best part is that I put together a fashion show which has been sponosred by Shades of Love and the models will be the women of SA rock.

Erica Vigilante of Desdemona, Twin Productions
Colleen of Dirty Deeds
Jennifer Broich of The Edge/ The Scene
