Alter Ego is putting the wraps on June in great style this weekend, after the HUGE wild blowout our friend Tiny had at Helotes Sportsplex last Saturday.
On Friday, June 29, we head back up to Universal City to TRIPP'S HUMOUR BAR, located at 210 E. Aviation, just off of Pat Booker Road, just before the Randolph AFB gate.
It's been a few months since we've played there and we're looking forward to the hospitality and friendly surroundings Tripp's is known for. Music begins at 9:30 p.m. and there's never a cover! There ARE always some cool drink specials going on and plenty of room and parking!
Then on Saturday, June 30, we head back up to Helotes for another fun evening at one of our favorite places, the HELOTES SPORTSPLEX, 17200 Bandera Road. Located just a few miles outside Loop 1604, come check out this hot new Northwest Side club.

Produced by Live Nation and partnered with Major League Baseball, “Halo 3” for Xbox 360, Monster Energy Drink, etnies, and Nowwhat.com, Projekt Revolution is a unique tour experience that merges a variety of music styles personally selected by platinum recording artists, and tour creators, Linkin Park. Joining Linkin Park will be Warner Brothers recording artists and label mates, My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday, HIM, Placebo, and more.

Everyone involved has been working hard at making this event an environmentally conscious effort. Rock n Rescue returns Wednesday, June 27th at Sam's Burger Joint at 330 E Grayson under Hwy 281. RnR will begin at 6pm and run until 8pm. There will be 3 bands competing including:

6:55 - EDEN BURNING

A 3rd band is currently being booked.

For those of you who have yet to make it to a Rock n Rescue. Come on. It's a lot of fun and it's a great opportunity to learn more about Animal Care Services' plan to become a no-kill animal shelter (there will even be pets at the Rock n Rescue).

If you've been to one, well, you know what's going to happen.

The live music is always great as the bands compete for the opportunity to open for the Classic Rock All Stars and Mark Farner at the AT&T Summer Concert Series July 21st at the Sunken Gardens Theater.

Here's hoping the judges have a tough time deciding which band is best.. that means we'll be in for a great night!

Comment on the Hot Tin Roof

Jinx would like to sincerely apologize whom we sent flyers and emails to and to my peeps whom I talked to about our show at "The Hot Tin Roof Bar & Grill" this past Saturday. Due to circumstances beyond our control our show was canceled due for reasons being as follows:

They preferred to book another band over us the night before we were supposed to play there. Now I know for a fact that we are not the only band whom fell victim to this B.S, I know of three bands whom also got canceled out for the same reason. Sure, Blanco road at mid-town is being upturned and Casbeers is right in the middle of it! So what old man! Look at it as a one sided game of capture the flag with sweet sweet beer being the flag and the city workers being your old elementary school nemesis!

You will be held at bay by San Antonio's finest. They have been busy building a moat directly in front of Casbeers which has rendered a frontal assault almost impossible without some sort of Amphicar.

This Saturday night at Casbeers is gonna be good! We start at 9:30 and remember, that extra good feeling you'll have will be from supporting Casbeer's and the Swindles during this mid- town makeover madness. Not that they are hurting, but I can't imagine this has helped business! As for the Swindles... we always need your help. (except in the art of the drinking of the beer, taking of the pills...)

Honestly, the city is doing a bang up job on the restoration of this section of Blanco and when they are done it's really going to be one of the coolest areas to visit. Right now however, it's kinda like downtown Baghdad.

The night is being dedicated to the late Wilbert "Quinia" Gonzales Jr., who passed away recently. Quinia was the son of renowned San Antonio bandleader, Ponty Guitar. Gonzales, who learned to be a well-rounded musician & performer from his famous father, would become one of the area's finest blues and R&B drummers. He played stints with the likes of The Ike & Tina Turner Revue, The Gap Band, Curtis Mayfield & The Impressions, Earth, Wind & Fire, and The Mighty Clouds Of Joy. Quinia was also a fixture in various formations of Spot Barnett's bands & orchestras throughout the last 40+ years. Of Gonzales, Barnett says "He was one of the very best! There was no instrument (Quinia) couldn't play, and his skills never diminished in his entire career!"

Alter Ego rocks to the BITTER END, and gets the SPORTSPLEX effects

The AE boys are on like Donkey Kong this weekend as we head to a brand new club for us, and then return to one of our old favorites. Come on out and celebrate another beautiful San Antonio weekend with friends and your favorite rock and alternative tunes played by ALTER EGO.

On Friday, June 8, ALTER EGO heads over to the BITTER END, located just off Hwy 281 at 903 E. Bitters. We heard nothing but good things about this Northside club, and we're honored and excited to bring Rock Done Right to this cool location with some amazing bartenders! Music starts at 10 p.m. and don't stop until 1:45 a.m.

Then on Saturday, June 9, the band heads up Bandera Road to the HELOTES SPORTSPLEX, located four miles outside of Loop 1604, on the right, across from San Antonio Ranch. Just look for all the ton of cars and the big outside patio and volleyball courts. John and company have done an outstanding job turning this place into a first-class club on the far north side of town, with a staff that will make you feel right at home.

The new tunes the band has rolled out by Buckcherry, Nickelback, the Killers and others have gone over very well, and have given the band a truly diverse songlist. You've asked for these songs, and we've delivered! Please keep the suggestions coming, as this is how we choose what to learn next! The MOB Rules at Rock n Rescue

The Mark Odom Band is a finalist for the chance to open for the Classic Rock All Stars, part of the AT&T Summer Concert Series at the Sunken Gardens Theater at Brackenridge Park.

Wednesday night, the M.O.B. won the Rock n Rescue music competition at Wise Guys in Embassy Plaza. Two more Rock n Rescue competitions will be held prior to the Classic Rock All Stars Concert on July 21st. The band with the largest point total will open for Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad, Mike Pinera of Iron Butterfly and Blues Image, Jerry Corbetta of Sugarloaf and Peter Rivera of Rare Earth. These musicians have teamed up to form the "Classic Rock All Stars" and will headline the AT&T Summer Concert Series July 21st at the Sunken Gardens Theater. Tickets go on sale soon for $5 with a $1 added surcharge which goes to the restoration of the historic theater.

Rock n Rescue is dedicated to raising funds and awareness for the City of San Antonio's Animal Care Services which is in the process of transitioning into a "no-kill" animal shelter.

As we move onto this week, we invite you to celebrate a Spurs game 1 victory with us on Friday night. That's right, I'm calling it a victory already. As a matter of fact, I'll give you my series prediction right here and now...SPURS in 5!! As much as I would love for the Spurs to close it out here in SA in game 6, I think that the Cavs will only win one in their house and they will go down in their own gym in game 5...I hope :)

Before I jinx them, I'll get back to the business at hand. This Friday, June 8 we're at Broadway Bar @ 8800 Broadway. The last time we played there, they had a record sales night. We'd like to have all of you come out and help us shatter that record and show them how much you all love to party. This is our only show this week, as we have a prior engagement to attend on Saturday. So get all your buddies together and let's have a blast together. We'll be throwing out some new material for you, if all goes well at rehearsal tonight. HOT DAMN!!

Rock n Rescue renews

The next Rock n Rescue will be Wednesday, June 6th at Wiseguys in the Embassy Shopping Center.  The participating bands include Matt Barker, Rick Miller Band, Mark Odom Band, and the Nico Adams Band.

 
The next three Rock n Rescues will determine who will open July 21st at the Sunken Gardens Theater for the Classic Rock All Stars with Mark Farner.
 
Starchild did a great 45 minute set in opening for Rose Royce last Saturday.  over 2,000 fans got a chance to hear this great band.

Dogmen and Spurs Thursday Night!

Throw down with the Dog Men Poets at Hooligan's Thursday June 7, which just happens to be the first night of the NBA Finals with YOUR San Antonio Spurs taking on the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Hooligan's is located at 13920 IH-35N, just off Pat Booker Road and Loop 1604, in Live Oak.

This is a great spot for live music with two levels to see the stage from, plenty of BIG screen TVs everywhere, pool tables, good food and more.

The Dogmen will be hitting it early with a 10 p.m. start time and 3 sets of funk/poetic music. It's also Game 1 of the NBA Finals with our Spurs, so come watch the game and stay for the music :-)

Texas Rocks Shakespeare

My friend and I went down to the Botanical Gardens Friday night to see the Shakespeare in the Park production of "The Taming of the Shrew." This is one of my favorites of the Bard's plays. Very funny, as long as you're temporarily willing to put up with the idea that women should be subservient to their men (ha!).

Now, I know, I know, you're asking yourself, "Why is Rowan writing a review of a Shakespearean play on a music blog?" I'll get to that. Just roll with it.

One of the coolest things about this production was that, although it was in Shakespearean English, instead of taking place in Padua, it takes place in San Antonio, and the people come from the Valley and Eagle Pass and Austin. The characters also wore modern clothing, in styles you are likely to see here in SA, such as a guayabera.

Another cool thing about the play was that, in between songs, they played contemporary music, in a variety of styles. Several times, I thought to myself, "This is a pretty cool song. I wonder who it's by."

Well, as it turns out, there is a reason these songs were so cool! When I got home and looked over my program, I found this:

The music used in this production is the work of local and Texas artists including...: Jon Dee Graham, Claude Morgan and the Blast, Flaco Jimenez, True Stories, Buttercup, Patricia Vonne, Los #3 Dinners, Rosie Flores, Mingo Fishtrap, Aztex, Eric Hisaw, The Lavens, Big Melvis and the Tonedaddies, Kelli King and the Fritters, and the Earfood Orchestra. You may catch these talented folks live in San Antonio at a variety of venues. Support Live Music in San Antonio!

The backdrops for the play were also Texas-flavored, featuring "El Sol" and "La Guitarra" and "Pollo" with pictures of each (sun, guitar, chicken), and original artwork by local artist Chris Boneta was being auctioned off near the front of the park.

I really enjoyed the way they added local flavor to this production. Very novel and well-done. And I enjoyed the music immensely.

I give it five habaneros!

Five habaneros also to Papa Wood, who was playing at BoozeHounds, where we went afterwards. You guys rocked as usual!! And Hi to Jerry, who said he reads SA Rocks every day, and to Lee from Ulterior Motive, whom I finally got to meet in person!
