With just 56 days until Fiesta 2008, the City Council on Thursday finalized the Fiesta Carnival's move to the Alamodome parking lot and renewed a contract with the Fiesta San Antonio Commission that could keep it there for the next 10 years.
“Putting it in the Alamodome is the best and the safest option,” District 2 Councilwoman Sheila McNeil said about the carnival's move to her district.
Still, a few residents were not convinced, pleading with the council to reconsider the move.
“It's not going to cost you much, but it will dearly cost the residents,” Dignowity Hill resident Nettie Hinton said. The city has been negotiating with neighborhood groups and the two schools nearby to develop plans to lessen the impact of the carnival on the neighborhood such as stepping up parking enforcement, increasing police presence in the area and reducing carnival hours.
The nine council members present unanimously approved three Fiesta-related measures. District 5 Councilwoman Lourdes Galvan was absent from Thursday's meeting.
