From the “It's about time” department comes the debut CD from The Lesti Huff Band. Singer, songwriter and guitarist Huff, a fixture on the acoustic/Americana/etc. scene, and her band got the “Where Was the Love?” disc out just under the '08 wire but will celebrate its release at 7 p.m. Thursday at Tycoon Flats.
Huff and her crew — Jim Bard (lead guitar, pedal steel, harmony vocals), Ray Symczyk (accordion, mandolin, keys, bass), Gil Polanco (drums, percussion) and Kelly Hoppers (bass) — have put together an organic, soulful 11-song collection. Produced by Huff and Symczyk, “Where Was the Love?” was recorded and mixed just right to showcase Huff's lived-in voice, as well as her songs and songs by Bard and a couple of covers.
By performing in venues from restaurants to biker bars, Huff has developed the ability to get songs across with confidence. She's also an accomplished wordsmith who eschews cheap tricks in favor of getting to the point and making things rhyme while she's getting there. Songs such as the title track, “Dead Man's Bluff” and “The Liar” ring true. Bard, a longtime Huff collaborator, also knows his way around penning tunes. Give a listen to “Neon Lights” for proof. There should be more than a little love generated by and for “Where Was the Love?”
