Rowan and I were asked to introduce the opening act for Ian Moore @ Sam's on March 13, Cory Branan. (From Austin)
The skinny - Cory has an underground, cult-like fan base. The folks do know him know that he's one of the best songwriters and solo performers around. They also know that he can write and record a country song as easy as he can a folk/Americana song or a punk rock song…a ethereal sex beat song…basically he is not loyal to any aesthetic.
The rest of the short background – Cory was once on Letterman and plastered all over the mainstream music press (see below), but with no real help and no real desire to be a star, he disappeared for awhile, 'disappearing' meaning that while he has not found or desired the mainstream, he plays 75-85 shows a year to a loyal fan base and on occasion, and to prove the versatility of his live act (and recorded work), we've successfully opened for acts as diverse as Frank Black, Against Me!, Lucero, The Avett Brothers, Todd Snider, Alejandro Escovedo, Richard Buckner and Steve Earle, to name a few. I think he's closer to anything like a younger Tom Waits or a John Prine and perhaps he's a fusion of the two with some Jerry Lee thrown in for good measure.
