Punkfest No. 30
It's once more into the breach for promoter Tony Chainsaw and his crew because it's time for the 30th edition of the annual New Year's Day Punkfest. This time around, the gathering of the punk crowd, Punkfest 2012, is set for Sunday at The Korova, 107 E. Martin St., the annual punk blowout's 16th or 17th location. Doors open at 5 p.m. Cover charge is $8. It's an all-ages show.
Chainsaw, who started booking Punkfest in its sixth or seventh year, has rounded up more than a dozen bands, some grizzled Punkfest veterans, some newcomers; some locals, some touring outfits. Chainsaw said he wants to give the NY Eve fireworks some competition. So here's the lineup: Sudden Attack, Oi! Dollz, Thieves and Liars, FATMD, The Dispicables, Indiana-based horror punk purveyors Grave Robber, U.Y.U.S., So Unloved, The Perturbed, Scum Allegiance,Nuklear Fishsticks, Esé, Squid Row, Semi-Automatics, NTFTOIO and, perhaps, a guest band or two.
“Every year I say, ‘This is it.' But starting about in August, people start asking me about it and keep asking me about it,” Chainsaw said.
And, like George Prado with Holiday Saxophones and Ray Grim with TubaMeisters Christmas, Tony Chainsaw presses on to keep the holiday tradition going.
“Sometimes it's a headache, but it's always fun watching everybody enjoy the show. I'm not burned out on the music yet,” Chainsaw added. “I'm already thinking of things to do for next year.”
Whatever he chooses to do next year, it's a cinch Chainsaw won't do it quietly.
