From The Current Magazine

"While speaking at a safety forum at Toronto’s York University in January of 2011, Constable Michael Sanguinetti stated that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized” and unwittingly sparked SlutWalk, a response to victim blaming, slut shaming, and sexual profiling.

Co-founded by Heather Jarvis and Sonya Barnett, SlutWalk has opened a global dialogue with a fast-growing number of rallies and marches taking place in Canada, the U.S., Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia.

While some participants at these gatherings dress conservatively, others comment on freedom of expression by donning provocative attire, taking one of the movement’s objectives to heart and reclaiming the word “slut.”

“Encouraging Survivors. Advocating Rights. Empowering Community” is the tagline of SlutWalk San Antonio, which will team up with the Cove on Saturday in an attempt to raise the funds necessary to make a March 24 rally, march, and post-walk celebration a reality.

The event features food, raffles, and live performances by Puzzlebox, Star of an Empty Orchestra, Hillbilly Jane, Mrs. Howl, and Vic & Ash."
