Échale! Latino Music Estyles with Ozomatli and Sergio Mendoza y La Orkesta at The Park at Pearl, Sunday March 17th

All Ages Event, No Cover

"Échale Latino Music Estyles, this spring. Sponsored by Corona Extra and Red Bull Panamerika, the free concert series is scheduled at Pearl with three spring dates: Sunday, March 17 at 4:00pm, Friday, April 5 at 7:00pm and Friday, May 10 at 7:00pm

Launched in March 2011, Echale! has featured the musical talents of Ozomatli, Bomba Estereo, Girl in a Coma, Ana Tijoux, Brownout, Antibalas and many more.  This celebration of Latin music combines the best of Pearl and its commitment to the preservation of Latin American arts and culture that is so prevalent in the San Antonio community. Original artwork, created specifically for Echale from famed San Antonio artist Cruz Ortiz, will also be on site and available for purchase.

“We are excited to kick off our 3rd year of Echale with the help of our creative sponsors Red Bull Panamerika and Corona,” said Elizabeth Fauerso, Chief Marketing Officer at Pearl.  “Pearl is happy to be home to such an eclectic music series that lets the people of San Antonio, and beyond, enjoy this free celebration.”

"Échale! Latino Music Estyles kicks off on March 17 with headliner Sergio Mendoza y La Orkesta. Named after the Aztec god of dance, fire and music, Ozomatli is an seven-member American band whose music is described as a collision of hip hop and salsa, dancehall and cumbia, samba and funk, merengue and comparsa, East LA R&B and New Orleans second line, Jamaican reggae and Indian raga. Sergio Mendoza y La Orkesta offer an indie-mambo influenced by 1940’s and 1950’s Jazz and the fevered complexities of Mambo infused with modern rock.

Columbian rising stars Bomba Estéreo headline and M.A.K.U. Soundsystem open at the Pearl stage on April 5. Founded in Bogotá, Colombia, Bomba Estéreo intertwines traditional Colombian cumbia music with “electro” and an onstage DJ to produce the lively “Electro Vacilón” or “Electro tropical.” M.A.K.U. Soundsystem inflects their sound with decidedly modern synthesizers and musical influences to generate a sound that is futuristic but traditional Colombia at its core.

Échale! spring series closes with Sweet and Tender Hooligans and Mariachi Mystery Tour on May 10.  Since 1992, Sweet and Tender Hooligans, a tribute band to Morrissey and The Smiths, performs to sold out audiences around the world with lead singer Jose “The Mexican Morrissey” Maldonado. Made up of the finest young Mariachis from New Mexico, Mariachi Mystery Tour offers a musical experience that can only be described as a tour-de-force artistic and cultural collision by blending the unlikely pair of The Beatles songbook and Mariachi.

The Pearl amphitheater seats roughly 1,000 and Pearl invites latecomers to bring lawn chairs and blankets if seating is scarce.   Pearl is located at 200 E. Grayson St. in San Antonio, Texas. Parking will be available onsite, and please make sure to remember the Kohler garage, which has more than 300 parking spaces.
