“Making Movies appears to pull-off both [indie rock and Latin music] traditions flawlessly, and blend them in a way that you hardly notice they’re doing anything unusual at all, let alone something extraordinary.” – MTV Iggy
“ … the young band Making Movies (and its producer, Steve Berlin of Los Lobos) shows us how deeply thought-out lyrics sound next to a rhythm track that somehow both propels and floats without violating the laws of physics.”- NPR’s Alt Latino
Berlin was first turned on to Making Movies when the guys opened up for Los Lobos at their Kansas City show. “I was struck by the effortless way they moved between musical styles, all the while managing to make each one completely their own,” Berlin explains.
“A La Deriva” is a concept album telling the story of a family falling apart. Its lyrics explore an abusive relationship and how it effects multiple generations. Enrique explains one song, entitled “Te Estaba Buscando.”
“It tells the story of a young girl that – it’s written from the perspective of a father, and it’s telling the story of him saying ‘I was looking for you and I can’t anymore,’ you know, ‘I can’t find you anymore.’ And kind of disconnected touch with his daughter. And it tells the story of her growing up in a not-so- desirable part of town and leaving home at 14. Getting pregnant. Becoming a single mother. And falling through kind of a similar cycle that his family had. And him feeling like, like unfortunately that’s a cycle that doesn’t seem to end. And that’s the concept of the record is that there’s these cycles that exist in our society. And I don’t think we pose an answer to the question, but it just poses the question: What do you do? How do you break that cycle? How do you grab a 14-year-old girl that’s already gotten pregnant and has already set those courses in her life, sometime due to things that were out of her control when she was two or three years old, set those things in motion. What’s next? You know, how do you amend that?”
Together since '09, Making Movies is turning out music that is appealing to a wide and diverse audience. Their do-it-yourself ethos and striking live show has taken the band across the United States opening for respected artists including Ozomatli, Los Lobos, Neon Indian, Cursive, Mariachi el Bronx and Delta Spirit.
Their music is indie rock. Alt Latino. Soulful. Indie. Classic in sound. New wave. Afro-Caribbean in rhythm and percussion. It's distinctly American, yet global.
Led by brothers Enrique and Diego Chi (singer/songwriter/guitarist and bassist respectively) - and made complete by percussionist Juan Carlos Chaurand, and drummer Brendan Culp - Making Movies has been hailed as “a rare crossover band…that embraces its heritage without being wholly defined by it” (The Pitch).
MTV Iggy says, "... the band synthesizes what’s happening in indie rock and in Latin music better than anyone else out there today."
Just as Los Lobos are tex-mex, cumbia, folk, blues, corrido but above all ROCK, Making Movies are a mixture of Latin music with a predominant American rock sound."

"Making Movies makes music that matters now: rhythmically adventurous, lyrically substantive, and melodically sensuous—the progressive Latino sound." - 100%Rock Magazine

“I think Enrique’s a master orchestrator. I’ve very, very, very, very rarely encountered any musician who – I pretty much never had to touch his amp or his guitar,” said Berlin. “It was like, he had completely dialed in a sound that was just breathtakingly beautiful and complex, and kind of perfect. It almost never happens.”-- Steve Berlin on Making Movies, KCUR Radio
