San Antonio, March 25, 2013 – ARTS
San Antonio and the Majestic Theatre welcome Luka Sulic and Stjepan
Hauser of 2CELLOS, a passionate dueling cellos duo which blends
classical music with pop and rock, to perform at the Majestic Theatre on
Sunday, April 14, 2013 at 7:30 p.m.
2CELLOS perform their own unaccompanied take on pop and rock artists that range from
U2, Michael Jackson, Sting, Coldplay to Nirvana.
These Croatian cellists go beyond their classical roots and evoke any
number of effects from their cellos including rapid-fire bowing,
pizzicato and percussive slaps
like flamenco guitar. They bounce melodies back and forth like a
musical badminton match, seamlessly picking up lines
from each other.
The
meteoric success of 2CELLOS started when former cello rivals Luka Sulic
and Stjepan Hauser decided to join forces. In January 2011, they
uploaded a unique cello version of
“Smooth Criminal” by Michael Jackson onto YouTube. Within just a few weeks, their video became a huge viral sensation, receiving
over 5 million views. This led to a record deal and an invitation to join
Elton John on his worldwide tour.
2CELLOS appeared as the special musical guests on
Fox’s hit TV series Glee
where they performed “Smooth Criminal” in the Michael Jackson tribute
episode. This was the first time that an instrumental duo had performed
as guests on the show. The duo has also appeared
on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and
The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Sulic
and Hauser are accomplished musicians who have been playing the cello
since childhood. Both recently completed their studies at the acclaimed
Royal Academy in London. Sulic
has performed all over the world at renowned venues such as London’s
Wigmore Hall, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw and Vienna’s Musikverein. He has
won a series of international prizes including first prize at the VII
Lutoslawski International
Cello Competition in Warsaw in 2009.
Hauser
is also a talented cellist and has performed around the world in most
European countries, South Africa, New Zealand and the USA, with debuts
in London’s Wigmore Hall, Royal
Albert Hall, South Bank Centre and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw. In his
short career, he has won twenty-one first prizes in national and
international competitions including the prestigious Adam Cello
Competition in New Zealand in 2009 and VTB Capital Prize for
Young Cellists in London in 2009.
