This Weekend's Shows by Jim Beal, Jr.

"Fiesta 2013 is all over us, and info about Fiesta 2013 is all over mySA. Here's a look at live, local, not-Fiesta action.

Dinners, Pelicans, more
Boneshakers, the soulful nightspot in the old building next to the Hays Street Bridge, has an eclectic booking policy that ranges from outside alt-rock to jazz. Saturday, Boneshakers will feature the San Antonio rock of Los #3 Dinners and King Pelican, plus Nick Gaitan & the Umbrella Man, guests from Houston who have S.A. experience.

The venerable Dinners did not invent garage rock, but they perfected garage rock, Alamo City-style, by coming at their songs with grass-roots passion and an understanding of the irrepressible spirit of fun that makes rock 'n' roll worth it. Be ready to sing along to songs such as “South Presa Man,” “Can't Stop ... Gotta Rock” and “Livin' Inside the Loop.” When the Dinners advise “No resta 'til after Fiesta,” believe it.

After opening for surf-guitar legend Dick Dale last week, King Pelican will be ready to let the surf/instro tunes fly with abandon. Bassist, singer and songwriter Gaitan and his Umbrella Man crew worked frequently at Saluté, where their Gulf Coast gumbo — a mix of roots rock, swamp pop, blues and Tex-Mex conjunto — went over well. It's a cinch it'll fly at Boneshakers.

Punks on parade
Tony Chainsaw, a godfather of the local punk scene, is choosing to kick off Fiesta on Friday at the Ten Eleven with a show called “Punk Parade” featuring a strong lineup of veteran S.A. punk bands working with fledgling S.A. punk bands: Nuklear Fishsticks, No!, True Till Death, Scum Allegiance, Inner City Scum and The Arrogant Teens. Doors open at 8 p.m. Cover for the all-ages show costs $5.
Chainsaw messages that Evil Come Evil Go will work the San Antonio Rampage hockey game Saturday then head to the Ten Eleven for an afterparty to rock with Shadow of Redemption, Mourning Sky and Heaven's Rose.

4/20 shows
The date “4/20” signals two things this year — the traditional “something to do with marijuana day” (Google it), and Record Store Day, the day musicians and record labels release special product to celebrate the continued existence and continuing efforts of brick-and-mortar record stores.
Roland the Nightrocker will stage his annual, long-running 4/20 party at Nightrocker Live on Saturday with two stages of music at 4 p.m. The outdoor stage will be home for Slug, Above My Enemy, Mega Metal and Prototype. The music moves indoors at 7 p.m. with Fumar, Chankla, Las Cruces, Maligno, Destruction Evolution and Well of Souls.

Cumbia/tropical bass, hip-hop and more will take over Hi-Tones on Saturday for a “420 Blowout” featuring Turbomex, DJ Sonora, Chisme, Ill Prospekt and PBLC.

At Imagine Books & Records on Saturday, there's a Record Store Day party starting at 7 p.m. The Rosedale Highs, a band that rocks and rolls with a fusion of roots, power pop and alternative rock, will do the live-music honors. Admission is free.

Reyes & friends
Guitar ace, songwriter and singer Joe Reyes will showcase his instrumental chops Wednesday at Olmos Bharmacy when he teams with keyboard player/vocalist Paul Fauerso, a San Antonio resident who's a veteran of the '60s San Francisco soul, rock and psychedelic band the Loading Zone.
The Reyes/Fauerso tandem will close the evening with drummer Darren Kuper (the Jazz Protagonists, King Pelican, The Saarinens) joining in to play organ-trio soul jazz."

Jim Beal Jr. is host of the “Third Coast Music Network” show from 3-7 p.m. Thursdays on KSYM, 90.1 FM. Check the Music Beat blog at mySA.com and @jimbealjr on Twitter.
