2014 PERFORMING ARTS SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION (Charline McCombs Empire Theatre)



SAN ANTONIO, TX   ̶   For the first time, KLRN will air the annual Las Casas Performing Arts Scholarship Competition In this 90-minute program airing on Friday, July 11th at 9pm, and again on Sunday, July 13th at 1:30pm local high school seniors sing, dance and act in the hopes of winning part of the $100,000 in scholarship money provided by the Las Casas Foundation.

The competition was recorded on Sunday, May 18, 2014 at the Charline McCombs Empire Theater in San Antonio.  Finalists competed in four categories—Vocal Solo, Acting Solo, Acting Duet and Dance Solo--- with each judged independently by theater professionals.  New this year was a fifth category called “The Jimmy Awards” where two winners were selected to compete in the prestigious National High School Musical Theatre Awards. This is the first time the San Antonio region has been invited to send students to this national competition named in honor of legendary Broadway producer/theatre owner James M. Nederlander.

“At KLRN, we have a long history of supporting children and the arts, so when the opportunity came along to spotlight the next generation of local artists, we thought it was  a perfect fit with our mission,” said Julie Coan, KLRN Chief Operating Officer.
In addition to the airdates, the program will also be available online at KLRN after the July 11 broadcast.
