KEY PLAYERS
Since its inception, Jazz’SAlive has featured a healthy mixture of jazz from traditional to smooth, from be-bop to Basie played by area and touring groups. The 28th annual edition continues that mix.
Patrons can catch the repertoire of Alto Madness with vocalist Jacqueline Sotelo; Latin sounds from marimba player/guitarist Alfredo Flores and Hot Sauce Jazz; violinist/vocalist Jonathan Raveneau; sax man Stan Killian; Miles Davis-inspired trumpeter Jeff Lofton; and Red Young and Black Red Black, an organ trio featuring Young (Hammond B-3 organ), Ephraim Owens (trumpet) and Brannen Temple (drums).
Here’s the lowdown on main stage headliners:
• David Benoit (6:30 p.m. Sunday) Pianist/composer Benoit has made his mark as a writer, an accompanist and a leader. Benoit’s latest CD, “Earthglow” (Concord), explores world rhythms, from “Botswana Bossa Nova” to the playful “Sneak as a Cat.”• Spanish Harlem Orchestra (8:30 p.m. Sunday) Led by pianist Oscar Hernandez, the band comes from New York behind the punch of its Grammy-winning CD, “Viva La Tradicion” (Concord Picante). Hernandez and the band are known for mixing tradition and progression in salsa/Latin jazz.
• URBAN-15 Drum/dance troupe will perform both nights between main stage groups.
