Humble Time Freakin Festival

from The Swindles:

Hey everybody! Uncle Mitchy and the Swindles here to let you know that yes, you HAVE been missing us and YES, you are in need of a Swindles fix! We are also displeased to announce that you are sadly behind in your consumption of an old friend. Call him what you will.. booze, canned heat, cocktails, ethanol, firewater, hard stuff, hootch, intoxicant, liquor, methanol, moonshine, oil, palliative, red-eye, rotgut, sauce, spirits, tipple, toddy, that demon alcohol.. just remember he misses you! So bring your little pink liver to the river, order a dialysis machine and pack up the kids for the Humble Time Freakin' Festival. It has been a goal of ours to play a gig where someone would actually be letting their freak flag fly and this might be the day our dreams come to fruition. I hope you get to be there with us this Saturday at the Goodtime Campground, 9300 River Road, New Braunfels, Texas, just down stream from the 3rd River Crossing. If you need to call them: 830-964-3790.

The Swindlesat Humble Time Festival

New Record On The Horizon!

RAM Ayala of Taco LandWe are currently working on a few albums and hope to have them out soon. One is a live Taco Land show which will also feature a DVD from various evenings. If you have any footage you want included please contact us. Also on the horizon is a new studio album that we have been working with Ronnie Morales on for the last 6 months. Release date should be around early 2008. It features all our favorite San Antonio-Soul-Country Swindle material that we don't always get to play live. We are also going into the 3rd pressing of "Drunk For Your Amusement" which means we have lost, given away, and sold over 4000 copies of that cd. Not bad for a little bitty band from San Antonio with no nothing about nothing going for them. Also available soon will be an official version of the "Live New Years Day" bootleg cd. You won't have to wait for Uncle Mitchy to burn a cd for you any more.

Alter Ego at The Trap and Hooligans

from Alter Ego:

Greetings to all our ALTER EGO-maniacs!
OK, let me tell you, I am seriously JONESING to get out and play again! As much as we enjoyed the weekend off, I get kinda antsy if I don't play at least once a week! I did have the opportunity to catch the My Chemical Romance concert last week, and I was extremely impressed by this up-and-coming band. One of the best live shows I've seen in years!
But I'm not writing to you to give you a concert review!
ALTER EGO is back on the scene this weekend at two of our favorite places to play. On FRIDAY, Sept. 30, we hit the Southsi-i-i-ide to play at THE TRAP, 4711 PECAN VALLEY (just off E. Southcross), beginning at 9:30 p.m. If you attended our last show there, you knew we had some technical problems that forced us to end the show early. We intend on making up for that, and then some, by ripping the roof off that place this week!
On SATURDAY, OCT. 1, we're up on the Northeast Side at HOOLIGAN'S, 13920 I-35N, next to the Live Oak Cinema, just off Pat Booker Road and Loop 1604. We had a GREAT time last time we were there, and we're booked for that location and the I-10 location throughout October and November. Both locations are a great place to hang out, get some excellent food, great drinks and party to some great music! We start at 9:30 p.m.
We're continiously picking up new gigs, like Click's Billiard, the Q Bar and Wise Guys, and are already booking into December. It's thanks to YOU, our friends and extended family, that we are able to enjoy continuing success. Thank you, one and all, on behalf of Bruce, Paul, Tony and myself, for supporting ALTER EGO and the San Antonio music scene.

Interview with the Booker

Steve from Alter Ego was kind enough to send this my way. It's from the Musician's Cooler newsletter. By Dave Jackson, author of the book "Get Your Band out of the basement (And keep them out of the asylum)"

Interview with the Booker Part II

I interviewed some booking agents for clubs for my Book Get Your Band Out of the Basement (and keep them out of the asylum available at www.musicianlibrary.com ) Recently I was at a club called Wilberts in Cleveland (www.wilbertsmusic.com ) and I got to talking with the owner (who also books the bands). He has been booking local and national acts for more than 23 years (he started when he was in high school). As I have said before, most club owners think alike. Mike Miller was very cool. Here is a summary of the conversation:

Dave: I always tell people to work WITH a club owner not FOR them.
Mike: Its a joint effort. If it doesnt work out for either of us, there is no point. When I book a club I give them a list of press contacts because I expect them to work just as hard as I do. The writers and radio people dont want to hear from me all the time. They like to hear from the artists themselves.

Dave: So what kind of press list?
Mike: College emails, newspapers, stuff like that. We are all in it together. The artist is as much an employee as the waitress or bartender. We all want to make it work, and have fun doing it. Its all rock and roll, but youve got have the business sense to it as well. Youve got to cover the bottom line.

Dave: When a band contacts you and they want to play your club, what are some of the things they do that drive you nuts?
Mike: When I get a press kit in the mail and there is no return phone number.
Dave: People do that!?
Mike. Oh yeah, or they dont put the phone number on their disc. I usually listen to these in the car, and it might get mixed in with 50 other discs. If that number is not on the disc, I wont remember it. I listen to too many. Right now I really like EPKs (electronic Press Kits). If I can go and download something, then if I like what I hear I will do whatever I can to make it work out. The first thing I do in the morning is check my messages, and I check my emails. The LAST thing I do is check the mail. Thats where all the bills come from. Sonicbids.com seems to be a good thing and well organized. If I go there and I like it then I might ask for a press kit. That should include a bio, a CD, and posters. These days I dont need pictures cause I go to their website and download them. I guess you need a website as well. You need those things. It makes it easier to get press.

Dave: How many strikes does a band get before they are not asked back?
Mike: (thinks) one. Twenty if I like them. It depends on if we get along. If I think theyre musically really good, Ill get behind them. I have a band Ive booked for 23 years.
Dave: Thats cool a lot of club owners its all about the bottom line.
Mike: Dont get me wrong IT IS. But I think you have to love music to be in this business. You would get burned out.

Dave: What are some of the stupid things bands do at a gig?
Mike: Trying to run a tab and walking out on it.
Dave: Thats pretty stupid.
Mike: Be rude to my customers, or employees.
Dave: Like a Rock star kind of trip?
Mike: Sometimes. Its just taking advantage of a situation. Some bands come in hear and think they should have access to everything I own. That irritates me. Another one is not following through. What irritates me is when a band books a club and expects the club to do all the work, and they just come in and play.

New Band in Town: Rok Candy

There's a new rock cover band in town and they're called Rok Candy. Some of the artists they cover are Three Days Grace, Foo Fighters, 3 Doors Down, Tonic, Stone Temple Pilots, Gary Moore, Audioslave, The Cult and ZZ Top. They don't have a web site yet, but you can check them out this Saturday (October 1st) at The Phoenix Room at 3935 Eisenhauer.

Checkin in on SpitFire

So, Friday night came around and we were looking for something to do. My nephew, who was evacuated from Corpus Christi earlier in the week before Rita changed course, had been cooped up in my house for a few days and we decided to take him out, show him some SA fun! I knew SpitFire was back at BoozeHounds, where we caught their very first gig about a month and a half ago, so we decided to go check up on them, see how they were coming along.

FYI, they're coming along great! Despite being plagued by some sound problems (things coming unplugged, some infernal feedback that took the sound guys a while to sort out), they sounded even better than last time! I was especially pleased to see that Anthony is starting to loosen up and get crazy with that guitar!! My only complaint last time was that I wanted to hear more guitarwork from him because I know he's good, but I also know that when everyone is dancing you can't really stop and break into a guitar solo. I think now he's found just the right balance, throwing some great riffs into the songs without breaking the rhythm. (Still bet you could throw some Satch into the first set when no one's drunk enough to dance yet!)

Speaking of everyone dancing, these guys really know how to keep that dance floor packed! I had a difficult time getting pictures - I had to be ready at the beginning of a song and try to snap one before all the dancers got in my way! Unfortunately this time I couldn't get out there myself because I hurt my back and I knew I'd regret it in the morning if I danced. It was really hard to stay in my seat when they played "Killing in the Name Of" - that one always gets me!

The singer (I really need to write down everyone's name next time - or they could get that bio page up on their web site!) is great fun to watch. He's so full of energy, all over the room, jumping up on chairs, talking to people between songs, like the guys who had just gotten in after a 17-hour trek from Houston to escape Rita (I think those guys got a bunch of free beers!). And waving this HUGE bra around - don't know where it came from but I'm happy to not be the chick who has to wear that thing! And here I'm complaining about my back! I don't know if you can really fathom the dimensions of it from this picture, but that's the mic stand it's hanging on:

Sorry to hear that Xavier will not be playing with them for a while, but you gotta do what you gotta do, I guess. I understand that Pete Perez, who has played for Riot and Halford, will be filling in for a while, so I might have to go check that out. But can he sing The Romantics?!

So, we got some STP, Creed, Jet, Modern English, Puddle of Mudd, Korn, Weezer...and the room was really pumping when they whipped out some Drowning Pool (Let the Bodies Hit the Floor - can't hold still for that one!). Billy from the band Seven took over for Xavier for "Killing in the Name Of" and Chris from 10Stick got up there and did a great job singing Radiohead's "Creep". There were so many musicians there from other local bands, it was cool. A guy from Craving Amy...some others, I can't even remember all of them now! Great to see bands supporting each other like that.

We had a really good time, drank too much beer, had fun talking to everyone. And bless you, Anthony, for pointing out that there's a button on here where people can help support SA Rocks by donating through PayPal!! It's over there on the sidebar, it says "Support SA Rocks" (Hint, hint).

If you haven't seen SpitFire yet, they usually play a couple shows a week, so make sure to catch them! They'll be at The Trap this Thursday, and at Galaxy Billiards Saturday. Check their calendar for more dates.

Added Note: According to an e-mail I just got, the singer's name is Dan Escamilla.

Preying Mantis at Wise Guys

Daniel, a friend of mine on MySpace, sent me this:

I saw preying mantis at wise guys last night, and it was bad assssss!!!!! I never saw them before but they were freakin awesome. Best metal cover band I've ever seen by far.

When I was walking up I heard "B.Y.O.B." by System of a Down and I thought "that can't be live." It was awesome. They played alot of Pantera, Megadeth, Metallica, stuff like that, and they took requests. During the breaks they would come down and have some drinks with the audience and they're really cool guys. I'll definitely be checking out another show.

The group is so high energy it's awesome and all the members are awesome on their instruments the drummer was crazy the bassist was awesome and the guitar was freakin insane. He nailed all the solos to every song perfect...definitely a band worth checking out.

Talent

Voicing My Opinion here, nobody throw anything at me it's just that I had a couple of experiences lately with just how damn difficult it is to play guitar, or any instrument or art.

When I hear someone being slammed, and unless they're godawful like me, or they aren't 'good' people all around, I think of these times.

Recently at a show a very capable, temporary (props to that already) drummer missed a beat on a song. Someone freaked the hell out and said, "Oh no he butchered the song! What a jerk!" No, it wasn't audibly butchered, I didn't even notice. No one is perfect.

Hindsight 20/20 tells me I should have told mgmt. OK UP WITH THE LIGHTS, CUT THE SOUND - and told this person to get their ass on stage and finish the set.

Anyway I also have the great, if not impossible, opportunity to see what it's like to play guitar with my b/f's extensive guitar collection and amp at my disposal.

When he leaves, he'll lay a beautiful Fender Strat in my lap, and just recently I got to use a sustainer ;)...his poor neighbors.

After having watched him play like the devil himself, I figure I can put something out, but my hands are small. (So are D'Arcy's, I think, so that's no excuse). I learned a power chord, and that is it.

Sureee flip to another power chord, the verse of all metal, do a solo, do a melody - eeesh!

...next time someone wants to diss a good musician that does not play themselves, you try :)

from Papa Wood:

We've had a great couple of shows at Q Bar, so hopefully we'll be back there again...possibly in November.

Also, special thanks to everyone involved in the Katrina Benefit show that we played at Tripp's in Universal City on Saturday. A very healthy sum of money was raised that will be given directly to those evacuees being housed in San Antonio.

The next full Papa Wood show will be on Friday, October 7th, at Wiseguys on Embassy Row off of Bitters. However, there is also a 4/5 Papa Wood gig this Friday the 23rd, at Tiffany Billiards. I (Nathan, singer) will be unable to join the group due to a scheduling conflict. Don't worry, there will be another singer filling in, and the guys in the band will still deliver a cool show.

Also, I'm happy to announce that between the two United We Jam benefits held at Jack's here in San Antonio and at Lucy's in San Marcos, over $5,000 was raised for the American Red Cross. Way to go guys!!

Sintense Interview by Alfonso

Sintense are going places. Really, there's no other way to put it. This quartet of San Antonio music scene veterans has forgone the safety net of being just another covers band and have worked really hard within the past year to develop their own orignals and show. What do they sound like? Imagine a mix of the Stone Temple Pilots, Creed, and Alice in Chains (among others), with lyrics that cover relationships, friendships, good times and the zest for life with amazing accuracy.

When I talked with them last Friday before their show at the Rock City Bar, everyone was joking with each other, and several times throughout the interview Bernabe (Drums), Dexter (Vocals), Ike(Bass), and Paul (Guitar) were quick to praise each other's talents and talk excitedly about their future together.

alfonso: So why don’t you guys tell me about how the band started?

Paul: Just making a little bit of guitar here and there. Got my cousin to help me out with bass. Later on, got a singer to join us, a drummer. I’ve known all these guys for a while, of course my cousin forever, just got them together. It’s been working out great since we started.

Dexter: Paul, I’ve known him since high school. This guy used to play with a cover band and jam in his garage all the time. And I had never sung before, and I went and started singing with him, doing covers—I had never done it before—and it was great. He stopped playing because he wanted to focus on getting his own music down.

So, years passed, the next time we talked, and him and Ike had something going, they were trying to put something together, and I swung by one day and Paul gave me a CD of their music already recorded and it was great. I started writing on it. We had a practice with a different drummer at the time, and it felt good. Paul asked me to come back. The other drummer didn’t work out, but then Bernabe showed up. Paul had said “I got a drummer” within a day. So went over and as soon as he started playing we all meshed together.

Ike and Paul already had some songs down and ready to go, all we had to do was add the drums and vocals and lyrics to it. It took off really fast and its been fun ever since.

alfonso: Was it time to get serious?

Paul: I’ve always been serious, I just didn’t have the people to take me seriously. Everybody always wanted to do covers. I said “I want to do original music, I want to get the right people.” It took a little bit of time, but we got the right people right now.

Ike: It’s been a work in progress that’s paid off these these three or four years we’ve been playing, me and my cousin Paul. And now we got a great chemistry and a good balance to see where it can go.

alfonso: And Bernabe, you played for other bands as well?

Bernabe: I’ve been playing since high school in all kinds of bands back when St. Mary’s strip was up.

Paul: I was a fan of this guy a long time ago. So I knew him already. I just had to look for him.

Bernabe: Years passed from the time I lost contact with Paul and the band I was playing in at the time stopped gigging, and I was not doing anything. And he went looking for me at my old address, and talked to my wife, not knowing she was my wife at the time. He said, “Do you know Bernabe, he lives in this house.” And she said “Yeah, he’s my husband.” And Paul said, “I have this band that I want him to come play drums for if he’s interested.” I went out there it was something I had been looking for, for years, and I finally found it. We’ve progressed so much in one year.

alfonso: So the band didn’t just come together overnight…

Ike: Oh, no. This is serious. And I think all our fans they come out and expect to hear us every week and we’ll give it to them. Wherever, whenever.

alfonso: You guys also have a song that’s coming out on a new The Edge Magazine compilation. How did that happen?

Dexter: It was a surprise to me, because I still don’t know who submitted it. Tamara[points her out], she does all our graphic design work—she’s awesome, she’s great—we have to give a shout out to her, she obviously sent in a CD to The Edge Magazine. To be honest, I was surprised; I walked into a show at Bonds 007 two weeks ago and everybody is going “congratulations, congratulations” and I was like, “What’s going on?” The Edge Magazine’s having a compilation. They had, I don’t know, about 700 bands between Austin, San Marcos, and San Antonio send in music and they picked 30. So we’ve got two shows to do for them in Austin and two in San Antonio.

alfonso: one of the things I really liked about the demo is the variety of topics you guys cover, from partying to the more meaningful stuff. How do the songs and lyrics come together?

Dexter: I’m a big Beatles fan which I think is the best band ever; their music, their lyrics were really good and what they talked about was awesome. When I write I try to capture the mood of the song and make someone able to understand the words. What I mean by that is, I want everyone to feel a different emotion. If I can do a whole set of eight songs and have one talk about partying and one talk helping out this world and one talk about relationships and one talk about young kids in high school going to California, or trying to make it, then I think I can at least touch someone with every song. These guys provide the music for me to write on.

It comes from wanting to write good lyrics. I could easily write “Roses are red, violets are blue,” But I want to be able to capture and Intrigue an audience. With the music these guys put out, I think I can do that.

alfonso: So the music starts with the riffs?

Paul: I write all the riffs. Sometimes the inspiration is just the moment. A lot of it was done when I was visiting my mom in Indiana. I had a lot of free time by myself. I made about six songs out there, just music. That’s the stuff we recorded and are playing. Now we’re just adding songs as a band together, making new songs. The chemistry is just perfect now. The sky’s the limit.

alfonso: So you guys have more songs than what’s on the demo?

Everyone: Oh yeah, yeah.

Ike: We’ve got about 20 songs that we’re working on and a few more added pretty soon. Our shows are consisting of about 18-20 songs now.

Paul: We like playing the long sets.

alfonso: where else have you guys played outside of San Antonio?

Everyone: Laredo!

Dexter:That's the only place we've played out of town, because it's been a short while. Now we're going to get to play in Austin because of The Edge compilation deal, and hopefully we'll meet some artists who''ll like what we're doing, and maybe we can get some more gigs out there.

Paul: The exposure is coming around. We just came out on 99.5 KISS, Texas Tracks on Monday night, so that's a big deal for us.

Dexter: They were playing 4 O'Clock Rush which a faster, more agressive song.

alfonso: Do you guys ever play outside the clubs, like backyard parties?

Paul: We do backyard parties and we like it; Free beer, keg beer y'know?[laughs]

Dexter: Everyone's there to have a good time regardless, so it's fun.

alfonso: So location doesn't matter?

Ike: Oh, no. We've got songs that we can play for kids, we can play acoustic, we can change it around where we got a little bit of versatility. We got soft songs, hard songs, whatever you want.

alfonso: we then talked about their influences which could pretty much fill up its own article.

alfonso: Which is your favorite club to play in?

Dexter: I like Rock City. The guys here have been really good to us. The sound is good, and we really appreciate each other here. Bond's is always good, good sound. And Broadway Brewhaus has been good to us, so we like playing there.

Robert: It's the same for me.

Bernabe: I like Bond's. It gives you the real feel of a live concert: big stage, lights, smoke, big area to have the guys move around. We've played the White Rabbit a couple of times and that's another place that gives you that live feel. Of course Rock City, we enjoy playing here, and the Broadway Brewhaus is another spot we like. It's nice and cozy and you can really know the people that come out to see you.

Ike: Definitely Rock City, we're ready to do this. But Bond's 007 is my number one pick for rock club of the year.

Be sure to catch Sintense at Bond's 007 and everywhere else thoughout the months of September and October where you can pick up a copy of their demo. The Myspace page has downloads as well as a complete list of show dates and messages from the band.

Sintense, Open Chapter and El Sancho

Friday night we headed out once again to Rock City Bar, this time to catch Sintense, Open Chapter and El Sancho. I hadn't heard much about El Sancho, so I had no idea what to expect. We walked in about halfway through their set and I wish we had gotten there a little earlier to catch the whole thing.

El Sancho
Put together the reggae rock of Sublime and the funk rock of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and you'll get something like El Sancho. They really mix it up - every song sounds different, and I love that. I was talking to some of the guys after their set, and they told me that they're always writing new songs and that they play a different setlist at every show. That's cool - keep it fresh - you never know what to expect! You also never know what instrument they're going to pull out. They had bongos, maraccas, a tambourine, a vibraslap and something else that I missed.

I tried to buy one of their CD's, but I took too long to get over to the table and when I got there, the CD's were gone. They promised to send me some mp3's e-mail, and when I get them, you'll be able to hear one of their songs on the jukebox. In the meantime, you can listen to two of their songs on MySpace at http://www.myspace.com/elsanchomusic.

I did get a CD from the next band, Open Chapter, and as soon as I decide which song I like best, they'll be on the jukebox, too. You can also hear their music on MySpace at http://www.myspace.com/openchapter.

Open Chapter
The guys in Open Chapter are very young and have a lot of potential. The singer has a great gritty voice and a good range. Some really cool-sounding harmonies with the guitarist. The bass player is way hyper - I kept waiting for him to knock out the singer with his bass! My only complaint is that I'd like to hear a little more variety within and between songs. Change it up a little...different rhythms, more complicated riffs, etc. It's things like that which make a song catchy, memorable, make it stick in your head, make you want to hear it again. Other than that, good modern alternative rock sound. Definitely a band to keep an eye on.

Next up, Sintense. These guys sent me a CD a while back, and I've been trying to get out to see them ever since, and I finally made it. I'm so glad I did. It was a great show!

Sintense
Sintense has a great alternative rock sound, mixing heavy driving songs like "Probandt" (my fave) and "4 O'Clock Rush" with a bit more mellow tunes like the rock ballad "Define Happy" and the almost classical-sounding "Julias Tune". The singer, Dex, is extremely energetic, damn near moshing on stage. That boy needs a much larger stage! Here I kept waiting for him to take out the bass player! Great guitar and bass riffs from Paul and Ike. Bernabe jammed on the drums. I think, if given the chance, these guys could make it far.

They also have a pretty large following. I've never seen Rock City so packed. About mid-set, I looked over at the far wall and realized that it had become standing room only in there. They definitely have a loyal (and violent) fan base...one guy kept threatening to kick their asses if they didn't play one more song. They ended up doing several encores!

You can listen to "Probandt" on the Flash jukebox above. They also have 4 other songs up on MySpace at http://www.myspace.com/sintense. "Define Happy" will be on the upcoming Edge Magazine compilation CD. Also, they're now playing "4 O'Clock Rush" on KISS, so call up and request it!

Guest blogger Alfonso was also at the show and did an interview with the guys from Sintense, which should be up on here sometime tonight, so watch for that.

When to catch 'em:

Sintense will be at Broadway Brew Haus September 22nd, at Bonds 007 Rock Bar September 30th and again on October 7th, then back at Rock City Bar on October 28.

Open Chapter will be doing a Hurricane Katrina benefit at Sam's Burger Joint September 24th with The Naos Project and Hazik. They'll be at Sam's again on October 21st. You can also catch them at Nightmare on Grayson October 14th and 29th.

I don't have any future dates right for El Sancho, but I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for them so I can go catch a full set!

Alter Ego at Main Street, Guadalupe, More...

from Alter Ego:

Greetings to all our ALTER EGO-Maniacs!!
Wow, it has been a great week! We had a couple of great gigs last week at Tripp's and especially at Boozehound's! What an incredibly charged-up crowd we had there ... no wonder we enjoy playing there so much!
Coming up this weekend we have an all new show and one we haven't played at for a while. On FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, we'll be at MAIN STREET, 13477 WETMORE ROAD, just off Thousand Oaks. We've heard a lot of good things about this place since new management took over, so we're looking forward to playing in a part of town we don't play in too often. Main Street is very comfortable, has an outdoor area, pool tables, and there isn't a bad seat in the house! The show begins at 9:30 p.m.
On SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, we head up to the Hill Country for a long-awaited return gig at the GUADALUPE RIVER CLUB 1483 JUNCTION HIGHWAY, KERRVILLE (take the SECOND Kerrville exit off I-10 and take a right on Junction). This is an outdoor gig on the back patio and a really nice place to play and to hang out. We haven't played there since February, so we're hoping for a great turnout!
Coming up, we have a TON of gigs at both Hooligan's locations, a gig at Click's Billiards on West and Babcock, at the Q Bar (where the old Mama's on I-10 was) and back to the Falls at the end of October. Your support has made our success possible and we apreciate it from the bottom of our little rock and roll hearts!
Thank you for all the kindness you've shown the band ... we're coming up on our fourth anniversary! Hard to believe! But playing for our extended family of ALTER EGO-maniacs makes it all worthwhile! See you on the scene!

Amplifyd and TKF at Rock City

As you probably know, last Monday was my birthday, as well as Kel's. Also Friday was DJTazz's birthday. So Monday we Virgo chicks had a Birthday/Labor Day bash at my house. The Killing Floor was kind enough to come over and jam for us (and various friends and neighbors who dropped by to hear some music). A great time was had by all.

Anyway, my friends were very impressed by The Killing Floor and some had not seen them with full setup (they used minimal equipment for the party). So I had to take them out to see them last night at Rock City Bar. Also, I had heard good things about Amplifyd, who also played, and I wanted to check them out. All I heard was true.

Amplifyd at Rock CityAmplifyd

Amplifyd plays a combination of hard rock and blues. A lot of great originals plus an interesting mix of covers, from ZZ Top to KISS, blending seamlessly from Robin Trower into Jimi Hendrix. They have a very full sound for a 3-piece band, all doing double-duty, trading off on vocals as well as playing their instruments. Deon Clark has an awesome voice and he just looks like he's having a great time back there behind his drum kit! Rich Zielin also has a very good voice and I was really impressed with his guitarwork. Warren Hammonds kicked ass on bass and also stepped up to do the lead vocals on "Deuce". The crowd loved them, and they collected $180 in their tip jar, which will be donated to The Red Cross. They promised to match the amount and The Killing Floor said they would too, so The Red Cross should be getting a pretty good donation!

TKF at Rock CityThe Killing Floor

Up next was The Killing Floor, kicking blues rock butt as always. It was great to see Jack back in action on drums for a few songs, after surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome. Filling in for him on the rest of the songs was Jacob. Great job! I won't go on about The Killing Floor, as they've already been reviewed on here by me, Darren and DJTazz! But it's always an amazing experience to watch JCM on guitar, and last night was no different.

The highlight of the evening was when the members of both bands gathered onstage and graced us with an ass-kicking blues rock jam! It was interesting watching JCM and Rich go back and forth with their different styles on guitar. Great jam!!

Jam SessionThe Jam

Watch for The Killing Floor back at Rock City on October 15th. I don't have any dates on Amplifyd at this time, but I'll let you know when I find out so you can go check them out. In the meantime, you will be able to hear one of their originals on the mp3 "jukebox" as soon as I figure out which song I like the best off their demo...tough decision!!

Jim Beal: Benefits need to be practical

from MySanAntonio.com:

by Jim Beal:

The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina is dominating every part of the news from the front page to the entertainment section, and that will continue.

On the local music scene there are mad scrambles to organize everything from benefits to entertainment for hurricane survivors who now call various shelters in the Alamo City home. So far, people from venue owners and operators to musicians and fans are working together. That's essential.

Friday's edition of the Weekender will spotlight hurricane relief benefits. When it comes to staging benefits, almost everyone involved has a heart that's in the right place; however, there are things that must be kept in mind.

We, and that means the entire nation, are going to have to be in this relief effort for the long haul. There are bands and fans in this town still reeling from the deaths of Taco Land's Ram Ayala and Gypsy Doug Morgan. While they'll step up, they're not superhuman.

There are local and area relief organizations that help the poor, homeless and disadvantaged on a daily basis. Their work will go on despite the very real possibility of donations being diverted to hurricane relief causes. They must not be overlooked.

The most effective benefits are the ones that are smart and compact, the ones that feature a handful of acts doing their best work in a time frame that won't tax players or patrons. While there's a temptation to stage marathon concerts, the reality is few people on the planet will show up at 10 in the morning and hold out until 2 the next morning. Three or four successful benefits stretched out over a few weeks will do some good. A massive gathering that flops won't.

Musicians are among the first to jump in to offer their talents to help worthy causes, but musicians also can suffer compassion fatigue and burnout. Musicians have families to feed and bills to pay and need to juggle benefits and paying gigs without feeling guilty.

The more venues that get involved the better. The worst part about playing for free is not playing for free — that's generally a blessing, even if the cause is daunting. The worst part of playing for free is hauling gear and wrangling sound systems. If venues step up and take care of procuring sound systems and stage gear, then artists will likely be more willing to play for the cause. It also never hurts to know that venue owners are kicking in on the monetary and publicity fronts.

Those working to find ways to entertain the evacuees could do worse than to view the shelter situations as they'd view wedding receptions. The happiness and joy factors are certainly different, the demographics aren't. There are a lot of different kinds of people, a wide range of age groups, living together under massive roofs. New Orleans is the birthplace of jazz as well as the home of rappers, so having bands and DJ's team to swap sets can cover a lot of entertainment ground quickly.

If mobile stages, with sound systems and stage gear, can be set up at shelters, getting bands, singers, rappers and DJ's to work those stages will be no difficult task.

As guitarist Steve James said years ago prior to a benefit, "The gigs you do for free are the ones you should do the best."

Running Late

Labor Day listings will be late cuz it's my birthday (officially since midnight) and I got Zelda for the Game Cube so I've been goofing off...plus I'm sick (cough, cough, sniff). But I promise I'll get on them first thing when I wake up in the morning! They should be up by noon. (What, can't a girl sleep in on her birthday?!)

Also, Happy Birthday to Kel! (We share the day.) And DJTazz, whose birthday is Friday! And Darren, also a Virgo, coming up the 17th (?) or something like that. Hell...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALL VIRGOS!!!

How's that?

On FRIDAY, SEPT. 2, we're back at BILLY D'S, 1805 PAT BOOKER ROAD, UNIVERSAL CITY, just two miles outsie Loop 1604. Always a fun place to play and hang out, we're looking forward to making regular stops at the great Northeast Side bar.

On SATURDAY, SEPT. 3, we're over on the Northwest Side at THE ROXY, 3249 WURZBACH, across from the Ingram Park Mall. Easily one of our favorite places to play, come enjoy great drink specials and a great staff that will leave you wondering why you haven't checked out this club before!

Iris at BoozeHounds

from Iris:

Our last gig (at the Trap) did not disappoint. We bought out three new songs (Pour some sugar on me, You shook me all night long, and Vindicated). Judging by the response the songs went over well. As soon as we played the first chords we got a vociferous response of approval. Judging by the amount of people dancing we’ll assume everyone was having a great time.

Tomorrow night (September 2nd) we’re playing at a new club called Booze Hounds. It’s located at the corner of 410 and Perrin Beitel (8531 Perrin-Beitel 210.590.3223). Don’t start the Labor Day weekend without partying with IRIS. Whenever we play a new club it’s always exciting but we also like to see some familiar faces. To celebrate this new gig we’re giving away some “gifts” to encourage everyone to come out and show Booze Hounds how to rock the IRIS way. It’s a three day weekend so be prepared to party hard. From what we’ve heard the stage is huge and there’s plenty of room to dance your butt off.

If you have a chance, grab this month’s edition of the Edge and check out our ad. Also, if you get a chance tell the EDGE magazine that your an IRIS fan and you want to see more of IRIS in their magazine.

Upcoming shows:
September 2nd – Booze Hounds (new club)
September 9th – GRC (Kerrville)
September 17th – The Firehouse
September 23rd – The Trap.
October 29th – Major Halloween party at the GRC.

Hope to see everyone tomorrow night. Make sure you wear your IRIS t-shirt. If you don’t have one make sure you enlist in the IRIS Army and get your t-shirt!!

On Saturday, September 3rd....we need Sexto Sol fans to come out and represent at Luna Fine Music Club (6740 San Pedro Ave.) for a live recording for the upcoming "Live at Luna" CD compilation. We need your energy on Saturday and here's a chance for you to be immortalized on celluloid (or in this case....in 1's and 0's on a computer :)). from Steve of Alter Ego...

...who is also Public Relations Manager for the San Antonio Food Bank. As you know, Hurricane Katrina has devastated the Southeastern United States. Refugees from the storm are evacuating into Texas, as well as other states. We are looking forward to at least 25,000 evacuees coming into San Antonio over the next few days.

This storm damaged or closed ten sister Food Banks in the Gulf States. The San Antonio Food Bank, along with other members of America’s Second Harvest, is collecting food for them. The San Antonio Food Bank is sending food where it is needed most. Our Member Agencies (370+ emergency aid centers in Southwest Texas) are dealing with the influx of refugees needing food. Consequently, they are requesting additional food from the San Antonio Food Bank in order to meet this need. America’s Second Harvest is coordinating a major disaster relief effort, and the San Antonio Food Bank, along with others, is collecting food for the ten sister food banks damaged by Katrina.

You can help. Please support the San Antonio Food Bank’s disaster relief efforts either by giving on-line (http://www.safoodbank.org/hurricane_katrina_assistance.html) or mailing a check to San Antonio Food Bank, 4311 Director Drive, San Antonio, TX 78219-3203.

You can also donate the following items, by bringing them to the Food Bank at 4311 Director Drive, San Antonio, TX 78219, or you can check our website,
http://www.safoodbank.org/, for other drop-off locations.

Items that ARE needed:

* Paper goods: plates, cups, diapers, tissue.
* Cleaning supplies: Bleach, Top Job, Mr. Clean type products.
* Water: Bottled drinking water. (NO glass containers)

* Heat & eat foods: chili, stew, canned pasta with sauce, canned vegetables, etc.
* Lunchables or other single serving foods that do not require refrigeration.

from 99.5 KISS:

You can still help by contributing to the Salvation Army Disaster Relief Fund. Find out how. Your donations are greatly appreciated!

from Electric Ocean:

Hello to all our friends in South Texas. We will be volunteering for search and rescue missions in Louisiana and on the way back we will be traveling to Houston to adopt several families and provide them with shelter in our homes and help them find employment locally. I am sure there will be no place to live and no decent jobs for quite some time in the local areas affected. If you have a few days and want to be involved in Search and Rescue or just want to volunteer and help in any way possible then call these numbers in Baton Rouge LA. The volunteer people there are exhausted and desperate for help.
