Johnny Drama: Working for the Weekend

from Johnny Drama's newsletter:

Here we are Monday morning getting ready to start a new week. Along with that, you need to be gearing up for one hell of a weekend coming up. This week we have both SOHO Lounge and Pat O'Brien's on the party schedule. However, I'm getting ahead of myself.

This past weekend proved to be an exciting one. Friday night we were at Sky Lounge for what appears to have been the last time we play there. If you weren't there you missed a crazy send off. It seems that Sky Lounge will probably do away with live music for a while as they make some changes. So we really want to thank those of you that were there who helped make it a success on Friday night.

Saturday night we were at Bar Fly for the first time. It's a very cool place with some very nice wait staff. We really give a big thanks to you who came out both Friday and Saturday.

Getting back to the news for this coming week. Friday night, we're back at what is becoming a true hot spot in SA, SOHO Lounge. If you weren't there when we played last month, you definitely need to be there on Friday. I'm telling you this is a very cool and hip place to hang out at. The crowd is lovely and the staff is great. So we'll see you there.

Saturday we're taking the DRAMA downtown folks. We'll be partying out on the patio at Pat O'Brien's. This is our first time there and we know that it won't be our last. I'm telling you now, If you want a good spot, you're going to have to get down there early. We'll be getting started around 9:45PM but that place is going to be filling up quick cause it's going to be one HELLUVA party!

I'm Baaaack!

Ah, just what I needed! Some sun, surf and siesta!

Well, ok, there wasn't much surf. There was, however, a buttload of that nasty black seaweed. I braved the seaweed and attempted to do some body surfing. The waves were too small and choppy to get a decent ride, but it was still fun!

And this is where we stayed, so it was all good!

Last Show for Double Clutch

Came across this on the SA_LiveMusic Yahoo Group, posted by Satantonio:

We've got a FREE show coming up on August 5th. It's gonna be at Jigger$ and we are going to share the stage with Valley of Kings and the LAST performance of Double Clutch. Spider Mike and the boys are calling it quits after this show. Now with that, combined with the energy of Valley of Kings, is enough to get most people, including me, out to the show.

But wait, there's more!!!

You also get us, SATANTONIO, SA's own Hellbilly Rock band. We will be performing some new material from our upcoming cd "Cool Arrow Fiesta", which we hope to have completed and ready for release sometime in September. We will also have some free stickers and other goodies to give out at the show.

Come on out and hang with Steve, Joe and myself. Grab a beer, buy one for us and sit back and enjoy the music.

A Little R&R

Ok, so as of Friday afternoon, I'll be MIA at a condo on Padre Island

Ok, so it's not the Caribbean, but what the hell?

The point being that the weekend listings will not be put up on sarocks.com because I won't be here to do that. However, my Yahoo Calendar should be complete and accurate.

If you have anything you need posted, get it to me before noon Friday and hopefully I can get it put up before I leave. Otherwise, if you have something important you want posted, there are two other people who can put it up for you, if they have time. Kel...you can contact her through the SA Rocks Yahoo Group (but she has friends in from out-of-town, so I dunno if she'll have time or not - you can try). The other is Alfonso - you can contact him through MySpace - look in my top friends on the SA Rocks MySpace page.

Que Pasa??

A quick run down of this past weekend. We played a couple of shows this past Saturday that were really good for us. Our good friend Al Berlanga helped us out with these two shows, since Alex was out of town. Big thanks to Al for his help and willingness to learn about 20 songs in 1 week...WOW!!

The 99.5 KISS Hooptie Car Show was hot but a great time and they really seemed to like us. We should be doing some more KISS events in the future. Thanks to Jennifer and Laura at KISS for all your help. Then that same night we partied really hard at the Cross-Eyed Seagull as we opened up for San Antonio's own Skunkweed. The place was packed, the crowd was great and we even had a few people show up that evening that were at the car show in the morning. Both shows came off great and we're ready to get back to it. The pictures, from both nights, are up on the website. Speaking of which, I have to give JJ some props for getting the photo page all put together. Check it out...now it's easy to see all the pics from our different shows.

www.SADRAMA.com

Man oh man, it's so good to finally get back to rockin' out on the weekends like we do. It always seems like forever, when we don't play a full show in more than week. Now we're ready to get to partying with you. Alex is back from his two week sabbatical to who knows where and we're gonna rock you the way only JD can. Our first stop is tomorrow night at Sky Lounge @ 5500 Babcock. This is a really good place to check out live bands and we really want you to be there. You should really try and come out there with us because this might be the last show for any top SA band there in a while. The management is thinking about doing away with regular live music there as they try to figure out a direction to go with the place. So let's show them that we really know how to have a great time and that JD should definitely be back there when they bring bands back.

Saturday, we're hitting up a new NW side spot for us. Bar Fly, located @ 7460 Callaghan Rd, is a cool little spot. The crowd there is a very nice one and we want to make sure to make a great impression as you always do. We love the support all of you give us...especially when we hit up new places. I'm sure you'll want this to be a regular venue for us so come on out and help us impress the management out there. Man it's great to be back!!!

Sexto Sol CD Release party this Saturday

Our CD release is coming up this Saturday, July 29th at Ruta Maya Riverwalk in San Antonio, TX. The whole show starts at 10pm with Snowbyrd kicking it off, a great rock band w/ lap steel guitar and psychedelic overtones. As written on their myspace, "The band draws on elements of Brit-Pop, Glam, Roots, and Electronica to create a sound very much their own. You can hear the Big Star, the Hoople, and the Clash--but you can't guess what's coming next. " After, Fred Himes and Roland de la Cruz from Los Mescaleros will perform their usual brand of all original blues rock. Incidentally, Roland co-produced our newest CD and does fantastic work. Sexto Sol will take the stage sometime after midnight.

Also, don't forget that J.J. Lopez (A.K.A. DJ Deepfeel) will be performing in between bands...spinning funk and soul 45's. Some of the groups J.J. spins were local to the area back in the day...always a unique experience and an education listening to J.J. and we're lucky to have him play with us!

If you need more information regarding the show, you can check out the web site or call Ruta Maya Riverwalk @ 210.223.6292.

Thank you so much for your continued support of Sexto Sol. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday and can't wait for you guys to hear the album!

Resource for Texas Musicians

Someone, realizing that bands sometimes get screwed by clubs, pointed out to me that financial troubles are often the cause, and that there is an online source that might be useful to bands. Which clubs are delinquent on their liquor licenses is public information, and there is a daily-updated list at:

Review: Maidens of Metal

Review of "Maidens of Metal"
by Darren

Girl power rocked Sam's Burger Joint on Saturday night. The four-band onslaught was the "Maidens of Metal," an event featuring rock bands with at least one female member. The experimental and versatile trio Monkeysoop threw the first punch at 9:05. Monkeysoop is comprised of a guitarist, his bassist/girlfriend (who can also play trumpet and French horn) and a drummer.

The Monkeysoop blend includes furious, polyrhythmic, progressive metal and a more appetizing version of "new age." Their apparent influences are Rush, Jeff Beck, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Mahavishnu Orchestra, sci-fi--and maybe adult--film scores, fusion, classical, death metal and funk. Their set included Hole's "Celebrity Skin" and their own "Monkeysoop" and "Jacob's Ladder." The former is what you might imagine people passing a bong around and vegetating to, and parts of the latter have waltz-like drum beats and dissonance reminiscent of heavy metal circus music. For a better description of Monkeysoop's music, listen for yourself: www.monkeysoop.com

Act II was the all-girl Austin band Adrian & The Sickness. The band's opening number sounded like a crossbreeding of Led Zeppelin, Ten Years After and punk rock. The guitarist/lead singer often bounced around like AC-DC guitarist Angus Young, and the band even did an AC-DC song. Their set also included punkabilly, a cover of Ozzy Osbourne's "Bark At The Moon," and a guitar rendition of Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of The Bumblebee" introducing one of their songs. Now, is that sick or what?

One of Sixx followed with speed/thrash metal displaying neo-classical metal guitar and bass virtuoso, Iron Maiden (How appropriate), Judas Priest, Queensryche and, possibly, Overkill influences. The six-piece band contained a husband and wife vocal team, two guitarists, a bassist and a drummer. Their set included a cover of Iron Maiden's "Trooper" with this band's maiden singing lead. Sorry, fellas, as her other half reminded you on stage, she's spoken for.

The final act was the four-piece Austin band Shelly Knight & The Livin' Dead. They rocked in classic fashion and gave new life to Deep Purple's "Space Trucking" and Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart.” They have one of the stranger logos around: a little-girl skulls head with short pigtails. It looks like something from a demented Day of The Dead art exhibit. I thought their front woman/second guitarist slightly resembled Gwen Stefani.

No doubt, girl power certainly rocked the joint on Saturday night.

The Weekend: 4-Fifteen, Texas Special (and some Jay & Silent Bob, hell yeah!)

Friday I had planned to go see two cover bands who were playing near my house. I was going to check out 4-Fifteen at BoozeHounds, then hop over to 321 Max to see Red Sauce Rules. However, Thursday night Staci (remember her?) called and said she was coming in town from Houston for the weekend and did I want to go see Clerks II with her Friday night. So I weighed the decision...good music vs Jay and Silent Bob...hmmmmmmm

So let me just tell you that Clerks II is freakin’ hilarious. My ass is probably still over there at the Quarry, because I think I laughed it off. Pretty much anything offensive you can think of...it’s in there. Racial epithets, bestiality, full frontal nudity...loved it!

Anyway, back to the subject. So after the movie, I talked Staci into going to check out some music with me and gave her a choice of BoozeHounds or 321 Max. She chose BoozeHounds, so we went to see 4-Fifteen. Sorry, Red Sauce Rules! I’ll have to catch you guys another time.

I had wondered about the name 4-Fifteen and thought maybe when they were coming up with a band name, somebody said, “Damn, it’s already 4:15,” and...well, you know, after hours of trying to think of a cool name, everything starts to sound like a possible band name. Fortunately, they have a better reason for the name. It’s the police code for a loud music violation (or they were 5 minutes early for 420).

4-Fifteen

We really only got to catch one set, but from what I heard, good job! Scotty has a good gritty voice, perfect for songs like The Doors’ “Roadhouse Blues” (excellent job on that one!), Gin Blossoms’ “Hey Jealousy,” Tommy Tutone’s “Jenny (867-5309) and The Commodores’ “Brick House.” (Maybe not for “Easy Like Sunday Morning.”)

4-Fifteen

Oh, and you know how there’s one song that a lot of bands play that I can never remember the name of and thus always refer to it as “that damn 80's song”? It’s The Cure “Just Like Heaven.” So next time I say “that damn 80's song” (because I’ll forget the name of it again, I promise), that’s the song I’m referring to.

Saturday night I went up to BoozeHounds again, this time to see Texas Special. I didn’t get to see much of them before, at the Elbow Room. I had heard that they wouldn’t be doing many shows for a while because they were going to be working on originals. So I figured, catch ‘em while you can.

It was nice to get a chance to hang out and talk to the guys a little. Got to say we ended up on some weird subjects...theremin bras, how it sucks when in you’re riding in one of those horse-and-cart things and the horse farts, whether or not Ted Nugent really does drugs...

Oh, and M’Lissa, I was bummed you weren’t there! I was hoping you would be!

One of the things I really like about Texas Special is that, even playing covers, they’re original. James Ponder makes each song his own, with his deep gruff bluesy voice and scorching guitar solos. Their choice of songs reflects their musical passions, not what they think people want to hear. Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Cream, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Black Sabbath, The Beatles (or really Aerosmith, I think, since to me their cover of “Come Together” sounded more like the Aerosmith version than The Beatles’ version, which is fine with me).

I’m convinced there was some mix-up at birth, because I’m pretty sure James Ponder was meant to be a large black man. I swear, if you couldn’t see him and heard him singing, that is what you would picture...someone who looked like BB King or Louis Armstrong. Seriously, he’s a big black guy in a white boy’s body.

I’m going to shut up now and let the music speak for itself. If you have broadband, check out this video of “Stormy Monday” - which, by the way, I looked to see who actually wrote that song and turns out it was T Bone Walker, in case anyone is interested and didn’t already know that. If you don’t have broadband, you’re missing out. Sorry. Ok, I’ll really shut up now. Check it out.

Swindles at Limelight Friday

from Mitch Webb and the Swindles' newsletter:

This Friday night at the Limelight!
Stage diving is not my bag. Stage falling is.

Friday night at Limelight is where we will be. Evidently, I had a lot of fun out there the last time! Anywhoo.. That's all behind us now and we can move on to higher level of consciousness or at least crawl back up to zero.

You only got one chance to see us this weekend and it's at the Limelight. Never been there? It's the old Wackys.. you know, down near Huey's! Whoops, If you don't know Wacky's you sure as hell don't remember Huey's. Are you tired of me using the same old writing techniques? Down near where the old Tycoon Flatt's used to be? Nope. How about south of Doza's old location? Someone shoot me please. I'm digging a hole am I not? Crap. How about.. down the street from Krazy Kat Music! They are still around, right?

Fiasco begins at 10:00 and ends at 2:00.

This is a rare inside shot of from the belly of that beast the Limelight. I plucked this Gem right from their MySpace site. Notice the writhing crowd forced into submission by the intense power of music.

The Limelight has reached new heights in creature comforts by pampering their clientele with such amenities as a full bar and even air conditioning! Casey really struts his stuff by turning on the huge $50,000 neon sign which let's the neighbors and all of San Antonio know that he has landed on St.Mary's strip and plans to stay! Now honestly. I really suggest that you make the scene this Friday at Limelight because it is a great place to instill yourself with what many call the "live music experience." But if you're not up for that experience, you can always sit outside on the patio and watch the horny ladies as they enter the land of Hardbodies!

Ozzfest 2006 Review and Pics

Thanks to JJ for this review of Ozzfest 2006!! Wish I'd been there!

Ok let me start out by saying that I really underestimated this year’s Ozzfest cause of the line up of the main stage but…. By the end of the night it turned out to be in my opinion one of the best Ozzfests yet.

Ozzfest Signing ScheduleOzzfest Signing Schedule

I planned on getting there around 9:30 but of course my alarm clock ruined that idea, so I woke up around 11 and to make a long story short I arrived while Atreyu was playing. I didn’t really stick around to see them. I walked around the Village of the Damned and then checked out the main stage during Atreyu’s set and most of BLS’s set but the little I heard of BLS was just phenomenal. Zakk Wylde is a hell of a guitarist. I can’t even describe the words for that man.

On to Ozzy. He came out there smiling and left smiling. He was in great shape and sounded great. He looked as if he were 20 years younger, he hit all the notes and remembered all the words. He just was running around on stage pouring buckets of water and shooting the water cannons. There isn’t much I can say but wow, not to mention his band which is made of Zakk Wylde (guitarist of BLS), Blasko (bass of Rob Zombie) and Mike Borden (drummer of Faith No More) just made the performance perfect. With a new album in the works the Prince of Darkness is back and better than ever…

Dragonforce at Ozzfest 2006 in San AntonioDragonforce

On to the main stage, the first act was Dragonforce. They have a vintage sound but nonetheless they still kick major ass. With an awesome line up of guitarists and a singer that reminds me so much (vocally) of Bruce Dickinson . . . you have to check these guys out, not to mention they have a “key-tar.” All in all Dragonforce is a great band that had little fan support at Ozzfest, so if you have a chance check out some of their music…

Dragonforce at Ozzfest the key-tarDragonforce - The "Key-tar"

Lacuna Coil at Ozzfest 2006 in San AntonioLacuna Coil

Next is Lacuna Coil which is a band I got screwed out of seeing due to the hailstorm at the Zombie show, but damn did they make up for lost time. From Italy this band really knows how to rock. They have a unique sound that no one can ever remake. With two sets of vocals, one being male and the other female the sound that they produce is almost hypnotic. I really see this band opening the doors for other foreign rock bands. By the time this band was halfway through their set the crowd couldn’t help but to sing along and rock out to this band.

Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil at OzzfestLacuna Coil - Cristina

Hatebreed at Ozzfest 2006 in San AntonioHatebreed

The hardcore ones out of the bunch: Hatebreed. This band really “brought it” to Ozzfest. They got the crowd moshing and having the first crowd surfers of the night. This band’s roaring vocals got everyone intense and out of their seats. This was only the 8th time that the band had performed with their new guitarist and he hit every punishing riff to perfection. By the time “I Will Be Heard” played you couldn’t help but to… get mad.

Chris Beattie with Hatebreed at OzzfestHatebreed - Chris Beattie

Avenged Sevenfold at Ozzfest 2006 in San AntonioAvenged Sevenfold

Next up is the “mystery band” Avenged Sevenfold. To tell you the truth, I wasn’t looking forward to seeing this band. To me they seem more of a “Warped Tour” type, but by God did they prove me wrong. All around a good performance, but the thing that really got me going is they played “Walk” as a tribute to Dime and not only did they do that but they also used the same background similar to Pantera’s a few years back when they played Ozzfest, not to mention they brought out the Confederate Flag guitars. But it was just an awesome cover. Avenged Sevenfold also has a very talented guitarist who did about a 5 minute solo which also blew me away. After watching their performance they proved to everyone that they do belong right here on Ozzfest.

Disturbed at Ozzfest 2006 in San AntonioDisturbed

After that it was time for David Draiman and the boys of Disturbed. Disturbed hands down stole the show. Through their entire set there wasn’t one ass sitting down (except for wheelchairs). Which reminds me that I saw Disturbed do one of the nicest things I have ever seen a band do. There was a wheelchair-bound fan in the crowd at the very front row, who didn’t let his “Sickness” stop him from enjoying Ozzfest. The people around him lifted him and the wheelchair up for a once in a lifetime crowd surfing experience and when they did that, it caught the eye of David, so he invited that man on stage by saying “Any man brave enough to be crowd surfing in a wheelchair can share our stage anytime.” So the security lifted up the man and David greeted him and rolled him right by the drum set and continued rocking. Disturbed had the most energy and crowd interaction you could ever ask for. They literally were perfect, everyone hit their notes, but most of all everyone was having a great time.

Disturbed at OzzfestDisturbed - John Moyer?

Sytem of a Down at Ozzfest 2006 in San AntonioSystem of a Down

Last but not least the headliners of Ozzfest 2006, the band who is taking a hiatus when this tour is over: System of a Down. I guess it would be hard trying to top Disturbed’s performance but musically System of a Down was great. I mean BYOB was perfect, they were hitting all their notes most of the night but the only thing that really bummed me out about their performance was that they really seemed bored. It didn’t look like they were having any fun at all out there, but I guess everyone gets tired. I just wish they would be the System of a Down that I have seen in the past with a bunch of energy and just nonstop fun. But on a good note they played everything really well so I guess I was expecting too much out of them. They closed with Sugar and by then everyone was also singing along.

Shavo Odadjian of SOAD at OzzfestSOAD - Shavo Odadjian

In closing Ozzfest 2006 was an awesome concert and an awesome experience. The only thing I regret is not being able to see the second stage, but oh well I bought a new alarm clock today. Hope to see you next year….

A Little Late: Johnny Drama at Soho

Ok, so I'm little behind. I went to see Johnny Drama LAST Friday night. July 7th. I should have had this up a week ago. Sorry!

Anyway, yeah, so last Friday I had planned to stop in at Hooligan’s to check out Harmsway at the tattoo expo. I’d read it would be their last show with cover tunes and that from here on out, they will be doing only originals. I enjoyed their originals very much during the Battle of the Bands at Rock City Bar, and was curious to hear them do some covers. Unfortunately, I found out last minute that their gig at the expo had been cancelled. Oh well, I bet they did a good job with covers, too.

I had planned, after Hooligan’s, to go to the new Soho Lounge on Nacogdoches (the old Lucky’s). I saw some pictures on Soho’s MySpace page of the new decor and wanted to go check it out (looks nice!). Also, I caught a few songs by Johnny Drama one night at Charlie Brown’s but couldn’t stay. I wanted to hear them some more. So I headed over to Soho to see Johnny Drama.

Cesar of Johnny DramaCesar

When I arrived, the bar was not very crowded yet. And if you’ve been in there, you know that there are high, mostly blank walls all around, the stage facing a wall probably only about 25 feet away, with another wall right behind the stage. So the sound tends to bounce around a lot, especially when it’s fairly empty in there. Thus the first set didn’t sound too good. There was a lot of echo, especially from the drums. They were often so loud that I could barely hear the vocals or guitar.

Alex of Johnny DramaAlex

However, as the night went on and the sound man made adjustments and the place started filling up, the sound got much better. I guess more bodies help muffle the sound, cutting down on the echo. By the third and fourth set, they sounded great! (And no, it wasn’t just the beer.)

I can’t tell you everything they played. I started to write down songs during the first set, but then I bummed a copy of their set list so I could plan which songs I wanted to catch on video, so I stopped writing the songs down. Of course I accidentally left the set list there, so...

I know they played Hashpipe, Sex and Candy (hadn’t heard that one in a while!), Mudshovel, Remedy and Stupid Girl. I remember some Bush, Black Sabbath (excellent), Nickelback, STP...

And I always love some Sublime! They did..wait...not Santeria or What I Got...but...Caress Me Down! Love that song and I’ve never heard anyone else do that one. Excellent job. I got it on video:

There are also videos of Johnny Drama doing the Beastie Boys “Fight for Your Right” and the Toadies “Possum Kingdom” over on my YouTube. So check 'em out...rate 'em, leave a comment, whatever.

I had a great time and I think everyone else there did too!

Girls just wanna have funGirls Having Fun!

Thanks to the friends of Johnny Drama who let me sit with them so I had a place to leave my stuff while I took the videos. Hope I wasn’t too much of an intrusion!

You can check out Johnny Drama for yourself July 28th at Sky Lounge, the 29th at BarFly and back at Soho August 4th. Check www.sadrama.com or www.myspace.com/sadrama for more dates and information.

Things were starting to look good for us after Steve Elliott's review of our CD for The Edge Magazine. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. Deon Clark, drummer/lead singer for the band has decided today to move back to his hometown in New Mexico to look over his mom and dad. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his dad, who has been showing signs of Alzheimer's Disease for the last several years. Family always comes first for Amplifyd. Thank you to all who have supported us thru out the years. A BIG THANK YOU to Steve Elliott from The Edge Magazine/Alter Ego, Rowan from sarocks, Kelly and Carlos for being big supporters of Amplifyd. So come on out to our last show and have a few beers with us and get a free CD.
THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS!

Deja Vu at Fiasco's Saturday

The Swindles at Scenic Loop Cafe

from Mitch Webb and the Swindles (from their newsletter):

This Friday night at Scenic Loop!

You can take your earplugs out for this one!

This Friday night out near Leon Springs at a place called Scenic Loop Cafe we will pitch camp and dish out some songs in a fashion you don't get to hear very often. We will be sitting down playing pretty quietly. It still grooves but it's not the rollicking, stage diving, beer-drenched fiasco that seems to follow us everywhere we go. Did I say that? Don't get me wrong, I still love debauchery, but I really enjoy hearing the band every once in a while and this place is great for doing just that. Performing at Scenic Loop reminds me of the old Niles Wine Bar and all the good times we had out there.

Come on out and witness the "circle of death" that Joe and I love to see evolve as people are forced to get closer and closer to the band. They have great food and Christy (the owner) has the best wait staff I've ever encountered. Nice bar inside, good food and a great patio! Thank The Lord Of Texas that big misting fans are there to keep you cool.

From 8:00-11:00 under the stars!

They have a full playground and I promise not to curse. Hmmmmmm.. I guess Fatherhood is growing on me. Well.. take a look at why!

I have heard from a reliable source that the Scenic Loop actually gets "pretty durn busy" on Fridays, so I'm expecting to have a good time. If you sit up close to the stage I'll buy your first round! By the way, I am the judge of how close is close enough.

Swindle truck can be yours!

It's true, The Swindle truck can be yours for 1199 big ones! Just put it in drive and close your eyes and it will autopilot straight for Taco Land leaving a trail of smoke the whole way! I will trade it for the right guitar or whatever you got if its fair! Good farm truck!

Syd Barrett

Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
You were caught on the crossfire of childhood and stardom,
blown on the steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter,
come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!
You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision,
rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions,
come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!

Tool and Isis

Ok, so I've been waiting to hear this, and though I have been able to confirm it on either bands' website or the venue's website...pretty sure it's correct...

Tool and Isis will be coming to San Antonio Tuesday, September 12th at the AT&T Center!

Well, that's all the info I have so far, but it's pretty exciting to me, cuz I've been wanting to see Tool for a long time! (Damn, I'd better start scraping up some cash!)

What's All the Fuss About?

Or maybe that should be what’s The Fuss all about? I recently received a copy of the new CD “One Hot Night” by The Fuss (a.k.a. Chris Boss and The Fuss). And I would say The Fuss is all about making good fun music. This would be a great CD to pop in at a party. Instead of spending a large amount of time picking out party music and painstakingly mixing it onto a disc, just throw in “One Hot Night.” It has it all. You’ve got pop punk tunes like “Punk and Disorderly Part I & II,” “The End of Innocence” and “It’s All About Me.” You’ve got glam rock numbers like “Shake It Up Baby!” and “Rise Up.” And for good measure (and, I think, my favorite) a more Southern rock/bluesy tune called “Earthquake Rock.” And much more.

Chris Boss has been making music around San Antonio for a long time and I think this CD is a culmination of that. You can definitely hear his musical influences in this album: a little bit of Green Day, The Ramones, KISS, etc., but brought together by his unique voice and style. In “Rise Up” you get a good taste of his vocal range, and in “Shake It Up Baby!” and “Earthquake Rock” you get a taste of his fantastic guitar-playing ability.

Now, anyone who’s been following along knows that I appreciate the hell out of some kickass guitar, so it probably goes without saying that when listening to the works of a guitarist who I know has a great appreciation for the “guitar gods” and the ability to follow suit, I naturally was expecting to hear some great guitar work on this album. And there is some, but I was a little disappointed to find that, well...not so much. But, hey, that’s just me, and I can’t expect a musician to tailor his music to my specifications.

All in all, definitely a CD worth picking up, which you can do online at www.cdbaby.com/cd/chrisbossfuss. For more information go to www.chrisboss.com or www.myspace.com/thefussrocks.

Another Deja Vu Fan Review

These girls really love Deja Vu. Got another rave review in my email:

What can I say? My girl Trish turned me on to the BEST band I have heard, ever. Even though the sexy lead singer was from another band...they still rocked. Did a fantastic job on getting me excited anyway. Xavier, not only a HOTTIE but what a set of pipes!!!

Bam Bam....you know how to bang baby!!!!! I'm only sorry I didn't get to meet the other two members in the band, maybe next time! Your variety of songs ranged from hard rock to cool 80's. I have never heard of a band doing it all, but now I have seen it! Your seether "remedy" song hooked me forever. Now I am a huge fan of the band, of course, without Patrizia , you would have been one less groupie..lol now I am gonna make every attempt to see you every chance I get, I loved the Tommy Tutone song, Thank you so much for the welcome! Thank u Trish for making them sing it! Xavier, what a great voice! Too bad I left too soon...wink*

All in all....DejaVu is the ultimate S.A. band that I truly enjoyed ! You all so ROCK! Thanx for the blast at Hemingways tonight guys. Seriously, you rock hard and look so damn good doing it.....yum! I drool at the thought! Great Night Guys!
Blessings Genny

Thank you Steve Elliott

from Amplifyd:

Amplifyd would like to thank Steve Elliott from The Edge Magazine/Alter Ego for the great CD review he gave us. After years of trying to get this CD to the masses, it finally has happened. After passing out 100's of free CD's at our shows, things are starting to look good for us. Rick Sanford (former lead singer of Legs Diamond) got one of our CD's, he liked it and he asked us to play with him on July 15 at Papa Ray's Sports Bar. Not only do we wanna thank Steve Elliott, we also would like to thank Rowan / Sarocks for having this kick ass web-site, and for letting bands post reviews and thoughts. The San Antonio music scene needs more people like Steve, Rowan and Kelly. THANK YOU!!! By the way, if you see the flier for the Rick Sanford show that's us on the flier. The promoter misspelled our name, they put Amplifiied instead of Amplifyd. So come by and say hi and get a free CD. Thanks again.....

AMPLIFYD – Rhythms

Thanks to Steve Elliott for this review of Amplifyd's CD Rhythms!

AMPLIFYD – Rhythms

By Steve Elliott

Okay, somebody answer this for me. With San Antonio home to such great blues artists like Ruben V and Jimmy Spacek, WHY isn’t blues music more popular here? It seems there’s only a few select clubs that will feature blues artists and band, and those are, sadly, few and far between.

Let me tell you, if you love the blues, especially tinged with a bit of rock, you are going to love Amplifyd! I met this band through MySpace, and after meeting them in person and listening to the “Rhythms” CD, I was hooked! This is a seriously kick-ass release and hard to believe it’s a three-piece band putting out such a big sound! The 10 tracks on this release will have you bopping your head throughout and hitting the repeat button over and over.

From the opening notes of the white-hot “No More Pain” to the closing chords of the beautiful instrumental “Peruvian Sunset,” Amplifyd take you on a blues-rock journey you’re really going to enjoy. Lead vocalist/drummer Deon Clark’s voice has that real bluesy Robert Cray sound that is pure butta! Clark and bassist Warren Hammond are one of the tightest rhythm sections I’ve ever heard and lock in perfectly behind guitarist John Bracy’s soaring guitar lines. Hammond and Bracy also provide excellent backing vocals throughout.

The third track here, entitled “Better Man,” features an infectious repeating bass and guitar line that set a perfect counterpoint to Clark’s impassioned vocals and percussion. “Waitin’ For You” starts off with a big drumbeat, with Bracy and Hammond launching into a brutal bass and slide guitar assault. “Missin’ Her” is classic blues, with the bass and guitar interweaving behind Clark’s vocals. “Loneliness” is a jazzier blues tune, and features great harmony vocals. “Dance Maria” is a Spanish-flavored rocker that tells the tale of meeting a beauty from south of the border. “My Sweet Lolita” is a burning blues number that shows off how tight this band is. "Flat Lands and Blue Skies” features some great acoustic guitar and is very upbeat.

The CD wraps up with the instrumental “Peruvian Sunset” which sounds like it could have come off an early Allman Brothers release. A driving bass and drums backbeat starts the song, with layered acoustics coming next, then electric guitar weaving in and out to create a beautiful sonic masterpiece. This last song is great driving music, as I found myself tapping my steering wheel along with the song, and throughout this entire CD.

You can find out more about Amplifyd at www.myspace.com/AmplifydRocks.

KRTU's "Music for Marines" Drive

During the month of July, KRTU is making a special commitment to support American soldiers abroad. In collaboration with the 1st Marine Logistics Group, KRTU is collecting jazz CD donations for use at the newly established Taste of Jazz Cafe on the Al Taqaddum military base 35 miles West of Baghdad. They are encouraging jazz fans in San Antonio to show their support by donating new or used jazz CDs to this effort to provide these soldiers in the field with a taste of home.

Donated CDs can be brought to the KRTU offices on the campus of Trinity University during regular business hours, or they may be brought to select live venues in San Antonio where KRTU will be holding donation drives. The entire project will culminate with the special send off party on July 20th at Blue Cactus Cafe, featuring a special performance from the well-known jazz band Small World from 8- 11pm. Johnny Drama at Soho & Charlie Brown's

from Johnny Drama:

I hope that you all enjoyed your 4th of July holiday and that all your fingers are intact after lighting your illegal fireworks. Now that the smoke has settled along with the 20 lbs of brisket, chicken, sausage, hot dogs and whatever else you ate and drank (or was that just me?), we want to help you work off some of the extra weight with us. We're inviting all of you, and your friends, to the event that we, Johnny Drama, have been waiting for for a long time. It's SOHO Lounge TIME!!! That's right, this Friday night we're showing the NE side of SA and it's newest bar just how we do it, but we can't do it with out you. Two days from today, we're going to be tearing it up at this beautiful new bar in town and we know that you all want to be there. You should do everything possible to make it out there. We have some new material that we're gonna be throwing out there for you so don't miss it.

In case you can't make it on Friday, then you can make up your absence by joining us at Charlie Brown's Neighborhood Grill on Saturday. This show has been on our schedule for a few months and we really can't wait to get back there. Even if you do make it out on Friday, you need to come out on Saturday as well because after this weekend we're gone for two more weeks. We'll be using the two following weeks to vacation with our families or just finish the honey-do lists we have been pilling up...ain't that right JJ? :-) So make your plans to be out with us the entire weekend and party it up JD style. Here's the complete low down for this weekend:

Friday July 07, 2006 @ 9:45 PM
SOHO Lounge
12889 Nacogdoches @ Thousand Oaks

Saturday July 08, 2006 @ 9:30 PM
Charlie Brown's

Joeless Swindles

from Mitch Webb and The Swindles:

Joeless Swindles find old age, treachery and whimsical youth to fill his shoes!

Fear not, he's still with the band! Just gone for the weekend!

Esquire on Friday night and Riley's on Saturday night!

This Friday night in Downtown San Antonio we will be at the best bar on the River, The Esquire. This is the last real San Antonio owned and run bar on the river and you owe it to yourself to get your butt down there and support them before the whole downtown scene becomes a big tasteless corporate turd. Seriously, the riverwalk is changing and I believe that change can be good, but things are really beginning to snowball down there.

Let's live in the moment however and enjoy what we've got while we still have it. Don't be one of the countless folks that come up to me and ask me if I ever played at Taco Land how you always wanted to go there but never had the nut sack to make it happen. The oyster of experience awaits you this Friday at the Esquire.

Home to downtown good times! We start at 9:30!

You know the skinny on the Esquire: the longest, most notorious, liquor slinging establishment South Texas has ever seen. Come down and visit Earl on Friday night and step into a big part of the historical nightlife the real river city has to offer!

Senor Reyes is out of town this weekend, so that gives us a chance to call up a few of our old friends and have them stand in his formidable worn out boots or Chuck Taylors.

Hey, speaking of Joe, he just heard 4th of July on XM's X Country! He's obviously unhappy with his guitar work and questioning why his inner source did not allow him to channel Speedy West!

"Ah the pity youth is wasted on the young" George Bernard Shaw

First the whimsical youth! This is a photo of Will Owen Gage. He is going to join us this Friday at the Esquire. Will is a really great guitarist and has played a few fill-ins for Joe already. He is the primary guitar player for Jay Boy Adams and as such has added a pocketful of fancy country licks to his already bountiful blues repertoire. He is young and I'm not gonna say how young, but let's just say he doesn't remember the Tower being erected. Okay... that won't work, how about he doesn't remember the Judge John Wood assassination by Woody Harrelson's dad... Still not gonna work. He can't remember Handy Dan's? Ah crap.. I give up!

Watching Will play reminds me of when I saw Charlie Sexton down at the Friendly Spot. Youth on the verge of greatness. But enough about this Mensa guitar master's age and more about the man himself. I can sum it up in describing this photo. Good eyewear and bad guitar strap. If you could hear a photo: this one would sound great.

Swindles on MySpace!

Yes it's true. We are on myspace. Click on the logo and you will be zoomed off to the land of sexual predators, half assed bands and lonely folks.

Old age and treachery arrive at Riley's on Saturday!

Here's Rileys! Ouch, I just bumped my head on that rafter. This is where you can find us on Saturday night. Somebody up there is having his birthday party and requested that the club hire us for that evening! Thank you sir and happy birthday, you have obviously grown an incredible taste in fine music for your age, whatever that may be. By the way, this is not a private party so that means free cake for everybody, right?

Here's the real treachery!

Hey birthday boy, RELAX, here's who I'm talking about when I say old age and treachery! That's Casper Rawls and he's gonna be sitting in for Joe on Saturday night! Don't know who Casper is?

This Helotes, Texas native has been around the world with his guitar, and along the way has recorded or performed with his friends The LeRoi Brothers, Toni Price, Buck Owens, James Burton, Albert Lee, The Derailers, Doug Sahm, Champ Hood and Webb Wilder. Just look at that smug confident smirk on his face. Musical influences include James Burton, Clarence White, Buck Owens, Don Rich and the Buckaroos, and Freddie King. If you need to know more just google his name, hook up the catheter and start reading.

To quote Big Dave Wasson, "It's gonna be a guitar slingin' chicken pickin' motha fucka!" I just want to watch the 6'5" Rawls play stooped over for 3 hours under Riley's low stage ceiling!

It was nice visiting with you. You seem like nice people. See you this weekend,

Mitchell Justice Webb and The Swindles

Bombasta Headlines Sam's Saturday

BOMBASTA HEADLINES
AT SAM'S BURGER JOINT

FOR THE FIRST TIME- JULY 8th

With Special Guests MOMBASA CODE

Bombasta and Mombasa Code

On Saturday, July 8th, local musical visionaries, Bombasta, will be returning to the stage at Sam's Burger Joint, in what is remarkably their first official headlining position at the venue. After spearheading the local phenomenon, Barrio Massive (which has been put on hold over the summer) and traveling throughout the state performing at some of the choicest venues in the region, the self described Ritmo Mixologists are set to spark a movement at the local venue with special guests Mombasa Code.

Though Bombasta has hosted various bands in the past during their multiple Barrio Massive events at Sam's, this Saturday's performance will be the first time that Bombasta will be closing the night out unaccompanied. The band has been experiencing great success in their travels throughout the region and has developed a strong cartel of friends and collaborators. Local world beat fussionists, Mombasa Code, will be performing first, as well as DJ sets throughout the night by Bombasta frontman, El Robotico 2012.

Bombasta has continually developed their unique mix of Spanglish politics and roots passion into a high energy show, with musical influences ranging from Cumbia Colombianas to Hip Hop Soul to Rocksteady Reggae. Proceeds from all summer Bombasta shows are being directed towards the recording process, with a full length CD due for release in the Fall. Visit band websites at www.bombasta.com or www.myspace.com/bombasta and www.mombasacode.com for band bios, press clippings, fan postings, images, etc.

Doors open at 9 PM; Music continues until 2 AM; $6 Cover; 18+

Warped Tour Journal

Came across Greeley Estates' Warped Tour Journal on MySpace (the San Antonio entry was the most-read MySpace blog today). Kinda interesting and funny, if you want to check it out. Their MySpace page is http://www.myspace.com/greeleyestates.

Includes a sorta gross section where Dallas "managed to snag my toe on a jagged piece of fence, which ripped my toenail in twain and tore out a couple good-sized chunks of my precious toe skin. (HEY! I NEED THAT! GIVE IT BACK, DEVIL-FENCE!!!)." In twain, lol...feel like I'm back in medieval lit!

We Watched the Headlights, We Watched the Stars

Why do I put off doing these cd reviews for so long? I think they intimidate me for some reason. I received a copy of We Watched the Headlights, We Watched the Stars from Archer Avenue several months ago and am just now getting around to doing a review. Sorry, guys! I promise I’ll get more on the ball with these reviews. Here we go...

Archer Avenue We Watched the Headlights, We Watched the StarsYou know that great time in your life where you’re young, it’s summer, you have no worries and life is all about cruising around listening to the radio, hanging out and having a few beers, and of course, thinking about members of the opposite sex? We Watched the Headlights, We Watched the Stars really transported me back to that time.

Archer Avenue’s latest effort is straight-up rock-n-roll about the simple things in life, and girls in particular. With gritty vocals, tight uncomplicated guitar solos, nice backing harmonies and a slightly Southern tinge, Archer Avenue has created a very refreshing and distinctive sound.

The tracks that caught my attention in particular were:

1) “Cop’s Don’t Care”

I was thinking about the fourth of July
When I was so happy, so happy I could die.
We sat on the hood of your father’s car.
We watched the headlights; we watched the stars.

Really takes me back...

2) “Breakdown on N. St. Mary’s”

Yep, good ol’ St. Mary’s strip...it even mentions a certain place we all know:

He’s drinking whiskey at the Rabbit on another Thursday night.

This song is about as SanAnto as it gets. It has a very Texas sound...actually it’s the closest they come to country music.

3) The cover of “You’re Gonna Miss Me,” originally by Roxy Erickson and the 13th Floor Elevators.

Very cool old sixties tune and great job covering it!

If you’re not familiar with this song and would like to hear the original, there are several videos of it on YouTube. Just get on there and search for 13th Floor Elevators.

4) “She is America”

These lyrics cracked me up:

She is America; she is a shooting star.
I’m gonna see her just as soon as I can buy a car.
A Grand National, I’m saving all my cash;
I know they’re ugly but who cares ‘cause they go really fast.

So, there you go. Great job. A very enjoyable listen.

We Watched the Headlights, We Watched the Stars is available online at Archer Avenue's Record Store for only $10. You can also pick up a copy at Hogwild Records. Or if you're like me and usually download your music, it's available on iTunes and several other download services (I know I found some on Napster). Check out archeravenuemusic.com for more information on the album and Archer Avenue.

There, that wasn’t so hard...

The Battle is Over, Vast Update & stuff

Well, the Battle of the Bands at Rock City Bar is over. So hard the last night...all the bands were so awesome! The winner was Remember This. They deserved it...and as far as I'm concerned, all the finalists deserved $1000, and if I had it, I would give it to them. I caught some more video clips and I will have them put together soon. Unfortunately, I didn't get one of Quartershackle, who closed out the night. Actually, I had one, but I didn't like it, so I erased it to get another one...turned out that was their last song. But they are very good, so check them out...they'll be back in SA soon at The White Rabbit.

I've just received an email that the Vast concert has been moved from Club Kristal to The Sanctuary, so tomorrow night: Vast, Beyond Hope, Gravity Euphonic and Bombs Over Berlin at the Sanctuary.

vast

The schedule for tomorrow will be up a little late (sometime tomorrow afternoon, cuz I'm tired). Sorry.

Tonight I was out and about and stopped in for a short time at BoozeHounds to get a short glimpse of the Mark Odom Band (aka the M.O.B.). Couldn't stay for long, but I had heard a lot about them, so I stayed and caught a few songs. From what I heard, definitely a band I need to go check out longer. Really good guitar and vocals. Two things: 1) I realized that Seven Nation Army when turned into a jam must get damned boring for the bass player, lol! and 2) one gripe: if you're gonna play Voodoo Chile, the solo should be more BLUESY...that didn't work for me. Other than that, I thought they were awesome and plan to catch them again when I can stay all night! From what I saw, Mark Odom can take any song and make it into his own sound, and I think that's very cool.

Also, today I learned how to put videos onto a disc so you can watch them on a TV (I know, so simple, yet I've never done it, so it's a new thing to me), so if any band wants a video I've taken put onto a DVD, I just need them to donate a DVD-RW and I'll put it on there for them. Thanks to Suzi (from Suzi's Rock Page)'s son for telling me how. You rock!

Lastly, two more personal things. To the guy from New Orleans I was talking to at BoozeHounds: I know you'll probably never read this, but I think it sucks that your family is all messed up due to the hurricane and no help from local or national government, but glad you have decided that SA is a better place to live. (Though I've been to New Orleans and thought it was a beautiful place and I'm sorry that it's so fucked up and doesn't seem to be getting fixed!).

And to the "friends" of the guy who was convulsing outside of a certain bar the other night: YOU SUCK!!! You were so much more worried about whether your friend might get busted for coke than whether he might have died for doing too much. You risked his life trying to stand him up and get him out of there when he was in convulsions. All you were worried about was getting busted. As the cliche goes...with friends like you, who needs enemies? All you had to do was get all the shit off him and all that might have happened to him was rehab. And seeing as one of you said he had done this before, put down your straw for a second and consider if rehab might not be a good thing.

And to that guy, I don't know if you read this site or not, but I know that my hand is bruised from you grasping it because you were so scared. Please seriously consider giving up that habit. No good can come from it.
